Detective James S. Peckman opens his Casebook and takes us into the dark underbelly of a world where true evil exists. Peckman and his partners take the cases that cannot be explained in the mundane world he knew before evil took his wife and daughter from him. Their deaths, “under suspicious circumstances,” caused him to leave police work forever. Now, his cases bring him face to face with the demons and monsters most believe exist only in nightmares.
Excellent choice for readers who appreciate both horror and mystery, especially of the hard-boiled type. I liked the short-story format. Each case is a separate story that can be read on its own, though they are best read in sequence because you learn more about the main characters as you go through the stories. This book is a unique take on noir that I enjoyed. (Full disclosure: This book has the same publisher as my recent work, but the publisher did not ask me for this review. I've reviewed it independently.)
