His home world is dead; the victim of a supernova, but this does not stop Karm from attempting to save the Brin, his extinct species. Rescued by an alien race from a derelict spacecraft as a vial of DNA, then cloned, Karm must travel back in time, convince a small team of co-conspirators to join him in his quest, and outmaneuver a power hungry monarch and his fanatic brother, leader of The Faith, both absolutely committed to opposing him.
All of Karm’s plans rest on the untested and controversial cloning theories of the young geneticist Dr. Jontar Rocker, and the abilities of his bodyguard, personal assistant, and surrogate niece, Maripa. Will their combined efforts be enough to overcome the power of the monarchy and the planet’s most influential religion? Will Karm’s secrets destroy the trust of his companions and ruin his campaign to save the Brin?

I am a 2021 Book Excellence Award Finalist winner for my book: Aeon Rises! The Book Excellence Awards honor books that have high quality design, writing and market appeal.

I am a retired middle school science teacher, working part-time as an educator at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. I began writing my books as a way to express myself in new and different ways as well as to challenge myself during my retirement from the classroom.

I have been married for forty years to the love of my life. We raised two incredible sons, and now have five amazing grandchildren to spoil rotten.

My science fiction series, The Brin Archives is an epic adventure encompassing an entire galaxy on the verge of destruction. This trilogy, to my amazement and delight, has won critical acclaim and numerous awards. Aeon Rises is my first try at young adult scifi, and has also earned critical acclaim. Who would have ever guessed this old, retired science teacher would become a successfully published author? I hope you enjoy my stories.

This was an excellent science fiction read and not long into the book, I was so in tune with the imaginary world that it became just a story about the characters, their power struggles and a page turning adventure. The author paints an imaginative future world but elements reminded me of the Middle Ages, with brothers fighting over who should be king. There was also plotting and intrigue as the Church fought with the monarchy for control of the people.
Despite the story being futuristic and reminding me of the Middle Ages it also manages to be very topical with the subjects of cloning, big business and the role of science all to the fore; quite an accomplishment by the author!
This is an intriguing and suspenseful read with some good twists. It is an intelligent piece of science fiction with excellent development of the characters. There is even room for some romance.
Highly recommended!

Sometimes a slow start is not a bad thing and I had a couple of tries at this, largely due to my general struggle with the genre rather than the author’s ability to tell a good story. I was glad I stuck to the task for Jim Cronin joins s small band of sci-fi / dystopian story tellers that I can safely say I have enjoyed exploring. The story is complex but avoids the pitfalls of getting lost in itself which is my automatic fear when it comes to sci-fi. A plot constructed around a world that doesn’t depend on me going back and forth to remember what is going on is refreshing in the genre and the author has an eye for the reader in how he tells his tale. Far too often writers lose themselves in their own desire to express themselves rather than to tell the reader a story. Congratulations to Jim Cronin for managing this with his own unique voice, a strong narrative and a book I can recommend not just to sci-fi fans but to all.

The writing style was engaging and the plot kept me entertained throughout. The only thing that detracted was the one explicit sex scene which was eww.... for me. However, I read the entire story in one day because I just needed to see what would happen. Very interesting storyline!

Somewhere, in interstellar space, a doomed ship is undergoing its death throes, as mutiny runs rampant throughout the ship. What has caused this crew to kill each other and destroy their ship? When the Skae discover this ghost ship and download the data on it, they uncover the grisly truth. The ship contains the DNA samples and the last remnants of a dying world, a world whose sun has gone Supernova and destroyed its solar system. They do have a chance to save this species, though, if they can clone the surviving DNA and then send them back, in time, to prevent the problems that led to the mutiny aboard Hegira.

Karm is cloned, raised and sent back, in time, to the planet Dyan’ta to put in place the plan to save an entire species, the Brin, from destruction. He must assemble a powerful, financial empire that will give him the wherewithal to be in a position to stop whatever went wrong on Hegira, but he must do it all without revealing to anyone his true mission. He must not disturb the past too greatly or the future could be irreparably altered. With just his beautiful, feisty, “niece” at his side and the brilliant young scientist Dr Jontar Rocker, the trio must bring the technology of the future to bear on the problems facing Dyan’ta, before the inevitable supernova, whilst always fighting off the secular interests of the Monarchy and the spiritual influence of the Church.

Cronin’s work is my kind of Science Fiction – fantastical, without being too highly technical. Yes, the story is set on another planet, it involves time-travel and interstellar voyaging, but at its heart it is still very much an action mystery and a romance. Cronin has avoided being dragged down by scientific jargon and concepts outside the understanding of most readers. This is a good, old-fashioned, action adventure that just happens to be set in outer space. As a read, Hegira flows beautifully, with simple and easily understood language, a minimum of difficult new words to master and a world touchingly similar to our own. The author explores and allows the four main factions in the story to play off each other: The Faith, The King, The Politicians, and The Industrialist. Each group has its own agenda and is seeking ultimate control, but for Karm, he must always stay one step ahead of the rest and predict their actions the whole way through to ensure the success of his mission.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read and would highly recommend it to any science-fiction, science-fantasy readers, in particular, but to all lovers of a good action/romance, in general. Hegira by Jim Cronin is excellent, with great character development and a rollicking story. As a youngster, growing up, I was addicted to Science Fiction, but one author, in particular, stood out, for me, Robert E. Heinlen. I read every one of Heinlen’s books, because they were first and foremost wonderful stories and didn’t dwell on the technical subjects of space, jargon, and world-building. They were just damn good stories and Hegira by Jim Cronin reminded me of those stories – simple, fun, and a little bit exotic. An excellent book.

Hegira is the name of a starship that is found dead in space by a species known as the Skre who take a DNA sample from it's storage and reanimate it. This clone's name is Karm who must travel back through time to a point in his homeworlds past in order to prepare for what he knows is to come now along the way he employs a genetic scientist named Dr. Rocker who only Karm knows the truth about and whom is responsible for his reanimation thanks to the tech found of the Hegira. Along the way Karm has to deal with backstabbing monarchs and crazy religious fanatics in order to save his species from the dying world that they are on. Everything goes as planned for Karm and the twist ending will leave you wanting more, I sure do and will be reading the next book in this series soon. I highly recommend that you pickup a copy of this opening tale in this series you won't be disappointed

This is an entertaining novel about one alien race’s mission to save another race, the Brin, from certain extinction. The book begins with the discovery of a derelict Brin ship with a dead crew who attempted but failed to save their own kind. To correct their mistakes, a cloned Brin is sent back in time. What follows is a story full of political intrigue and religious fervor where competing powers try to outmaneuver each other. While I enjoyed the characters and the plot, one area in which I found fault was in the author’s attempt to depict the Brin as alien. Other than their having feathered crests and talons, the Brin and their society seemed fully human and Earth-like to me. In fact, the author often refers to them as men and women. My personal solution was to ignore the alien aspect and enjoy the rest.

The story follows the lives of three people: Karm, Maripa and Jontar Rocket. When I say people, they are more like birds in some ways with talons instead of finger nails and feathers instead of hair. Other than that they are basically human, even to the extent of drinking whiskey and going fly fishing. My one complaint is that the characters were far too anthropomorphic. If you are going to write SciFi about a race of alien creatures, please don't give them human attributes and habits.
After getting that off my chest, the positives; this was a well-written story with several good twists along the way. The true test is that I wanted to read it every night, although at times I felt guilty for liking it.

I'd give it 4.5 if I could but I'm going to be generous and round up to 5.

A good read

A very enjoyable book with a good story. Some interesting ideas about cloning. My only criticism would be that I would make the aliens less human.

Hegira by Jim Cronin is a Dystopian, Time-travel, science fiction centring around the protagonists Karm, and his involvement with Maripa and Doctor Jontar Rocket. Karm was sent back in time with a very specific agenda, to prevent the extinction of the Brin, the only hope the universe has to overcome the current threat. Armed with carefully selected information regarding the past he is sent to the planet in order to develop the means to keep his people from extinction, without causing too much damage to the timeline. But his mission is not without obstacles, his allies begin to question him, trust wavers and with the rising or The Faith and their collaboration to control all which is Karm's, if he is to succeed he needs to stay ahead of their schemes.

I have to say I really enjoyed reading this book, it not only expertly executed a time travel science fiction plot, but also approached modern day concerns on topics such as cloning and the viewpoints and discussions on attempting such a thing. Whilst we are reading about an alien race, the author does a fantastic job in ensuring we connect with the characters and their strife on a personal level. It becomes not about the fact these are aliens and different to humans, which in some books steal the focal point, but about the story, the plot, and the danger being faced. I found it very difficult to put down, Karm, the main character, is playing a very involved game of manipulation, trying to outwit those who would oppose him, and I always wanted to know what he had up his sleeve next.

The book itself is nicely written and flows smoothly. There is a great balance between description and leaving things to the reader's imagination, which is something I greatly appreciate in a writing style. It has a very well thought out plot, and clearly the author has spent some time assessing the practical requirements of what was needed in order to make the plot and the plans within a success. All in all, a very good read and deserving of the 5 stars I have awarded it.

I think this book had potential, but there were aspects of the writing style that were confusing and also rather annoying.

Cronin seems to enjoy springing a surprise on the reader; he likes sneaking up on a big reveal. I'm all for this, every so often, but it's also an art form.

It was almost as if, in the author's excitement to reach a "ta da" moment, he'd leave out (sometimes important) details or his craft would briefly suffer, muddling the message. I felt like the book, made up of several of these moments, was perhaps building to one larger moment. Except, there wasn't enough of a solid foundation to carry it.

We know an entire planet and race were destroyed, but we don't know why it matters to humans so much to go to any lengths to change these facts. We don't know the specific missions of the two characters sent back in time. Or why she was introduced so much later than he, and why she was sent as a baby. And after being present for decades, changing absolutely nothing, seeing the end nearing... Well, after over 80 some pages, I lost interest in Karm. The reader was never given a reason to hang in with his supposed purpose.

The bottom line, we have no driving force. No reason to care. No particularly likable characters or characters we can respect or feel an affinity for.

I had high hopes for this. Cloning, religious group, politics, SciFi, what's not to enjoy? But the beginning of a story is just as important as the middle and the end.

Rather than pushing through while receiving very little satisfaction in this journey, I'm moving on.

Of obvious appeal to sci-fi fans but the strong story-line gives this book universal appeal. So I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good, well-written story.
Plot: Karm is sent back in time to save the doomed Brim race from extinction.
Great story, well-drawn characters and tense conflict as different groups try to thwart Karm's plans while saving themselves. I thoroughly enjoyed this read which was both intelligent and full of page-turning suspense.
Following the tradition of quality sci-fi beneath the story is a consideration of abuse of power, political and religious and the ethics and abuse of scientific advances, such as the ability to clone living beings.
What impressed me the most was how accessible this book made the genre and the underlying issues. Often books in this genre are so filled with jargon and fantastical creatures that I find myself distracted and unable to follow the story. Here Cronin has kept things far simpler, the Brin, their culture and their planet are just different enough to register as alien and I was given sufficient technical information to understand what was going on without becoming entangled in magnetic fields and anti-matter. Hard-core sci-fi fans may want more but I thought this was an imaginative fast paced read which kept me engaged throughout.
A suspense-full sci-fi with universal appeal.

I’m not usually a reader of sci-fi or dystopian novels, but I strive to broaden my reading experience when good books are recommended to me, as Jim Cronin’s Hegira recently was.

It was an excellent choice. Time travel, mystery, secrets abound, and the story quickly hooks the reader. I loved that the story was easy to read, and the world building enabled me to visualise the story as it unfolded. I could get my dyslectic eyes to read and mind around easy to pronounce the alien names and places. I found myself engaged and willing for the survival of the Brim race. This is a perfect introduction to science fiction for a reader of any age.

Stories set in other places and time work best for me if I can see the hero dealing with issues not unlike those we face today. It is all there, the dictatorial bigots, the heroic characters bonding together for combined strength, the corrupt politics and evil dynasties, adventure and beauty; it is so easy to get hooked into a fabulous reading experience with Cronin’s writing.

Wow! It's been a long time since I read good science fiction. Cronin's writing is superb and his world building abilities are impressive. At times, I had to slow down and take it all in. But he put the story together nicely. The twists throughout were well-placed and the story itself had a great flow.
Hegira offers so much to readers: mystery, adventure, and even some romance! The main MC, Karm, is so well-developed and easy to connect with, surprisingly. The other characters are richly developed as well. I found myself liking some more than others.
Karm has a lot of responsibility resting on his shoulders. He basically has to save an entire species from extinction. This will involve putting together a strong team of individuals who can help him build a new successful empire and overcome an evil monarchy that threatens to destroy them all.
This is my first book by Cronin and now I'm interested to go find more!! 4.5 STARS!!!

The title, Hegira drew me to this novel by Jim Cronin. Hegira - a journey or travel that is in essence to escape from a dangerous situation. It intrigued me. I downloaded it on KU.
I wasn't sure about the genre though. I didn't need to worry because Jim Cronin has a way of explaining what is going on through dialogue between his well thought-out characters. The author's characters are varied, both in personality and trait, which makes them all interesting. Karm, the main character is believable and flawed.
Many sci -fi books tend to have a hero that is perfect in every way, Cronin is different and I find this refreshing.
I thought the plot and idea in Hegira - making a financially powerful place and cloning - was solid and believable.
Hegira augurs well for Jim Cronin's future books. I look forward to reading more from him.

Science fiction at its best.

Science fiction at its best. A well written and well imagined alien world without being difficult to understand and follow. A race of humanoid bird-like people, the Brin, will become extinct unless two clones, Karm and Maripa, can go back in time and convince the prevailing authority and religion to change direction. Not an easy task with government & religious interests aiming to resist the scientists. The story starts a little slowly but when it takes off, the pace is well matched to the unfolding of events. To keep the story interesting the drama has good elements of science, controversy, some romance, suspense and action, all underpinned with believable and well-drawn characters. It is a complex story, which for me means read more carefully to ensure nothing important is missed. Highly recommended.

I found this story a little slow to get going, but intriguing enough to want to read on, and I’m glad I did. DNA recovered from a dead space-ship has the possibility of averting the extinction of an entire race on a dead planet by travelling back in time. The story unfolds carefully, and much is hidden from both the reader and the characters as three disparate groups seek to gain the upper hand in the fight for survival. Intrigue a plenty and a nice twist at the end which brings the tale satisfyingly full-circle. I enjoyed it very much. http://www.amazon.com/Hegira-Jim-Cron...

A science fiction story with twists throughout are not easy to come by. Hegira, I'm glad to say, breaks the mould a little with its innovating plots and sub plots of economics, politics, power struggles and characters, from soldier to royalty.

The writing was also commendable. It flowed and not once did I feel bogged down by information about future technology, which I struggle with, at times, when reading or watching science fiction.

All in all , I have to give this novel 5 stars for sheer enjoyment value.

INNOVATIVE SCIENCE FICTION

I enjoyed this creative sci-fi tale. The author's descriptions of spacecraft and characters allows the reader to envision the world he has created in Hegira. The story kept my interest enough to finish the book in two days. I appreciated the author's pleasant point of view throughout the novel, even though the plot could be suspenseful and tense. Mr. Cronin's science background was evident as was the care he took crafting an interesting story. Kudos to the author.

I don't normally read sci-fi - thrillers and suspense are my usual genres - but I'm really glad I read Hegira! This book takes the read on an incredible journey that has lots of twists and turns, and leaves you guessing right up to the last page. There are some necessary jumps in time, but they are well done, so you never lose track of where you are in the time-line. Great characters, great plot, and a fantastic ending. Loved this book!

Hi concept Science Fiction like this can often miss the mark, but Hegira is a great example of an author who nails it. The world building is exemplary along with the social construct that underpins it. Because there is so much to take in it does take a little while to get into it but by the third chapter I was in my element and lost in the story. So pleased this is part of a series and looking forward to the next release.

I struggled to get into this book. It’s a complex story that moved a little slowly in the beginning, but once I connected with the story and the characters, it flowed well. The author did an excellent job with the world building and character development, and the plot continued to surprise me. Highly recommended to fans of the genre. I will definitely keep an eye on this author.

Interesting concept but awful execution. Could have used a couple of more passes by the editor. Also, when it comes to world building, it’s best to put in more effort than none at all.
