SPECTR Series 2 #1

Mocker of Ravens

Rate this book
Caleb has spent the last six months adjusting to life possessed by the vampire spirit Gray. Unfortunately, after the events of Fort Sumter, the other agents of SPECTR view him more as a ticking time bomb than a co-worker.

The one bright spot is Caleb and Gray’s boyfriend, federal exorcist John Starkweather. But John has problems of his own. A supernatural killer is on the loose in Charleston, stealing the hearts of its victims to extend its own unnatural life.

With the help of a rookie agent, John, Caleb, and Gray must find the killer before it strikes again…or before they become the demon’s next victims.

Oh SPECTR series, how do I love thee. I binged shamelessly on every installment of the first arc, and it looks like I'm going to do the same thing for the next, except that I came to SPECTR 1 with the first four already published so I could devour them in a sitting, whereas now I have to wait for them to be written, and frankly, screw you. /glowers/

I love the John/Gray/Caleb setup (Gray is one of the very few vampires I tolerate), love the way the world's developing, and this is a great monster as well. Fabby.

No one was happier than I was when Jordan L. Hawk announced the continuing adventures of Gray, Caleb and John. It was like a sip of drinking chocolate on a cold, icy day and I didn’t have to go anywhere. ‘Course reading it was like swishing that sip around my mouth with a shot of Jack Daniels’ Tennessee Fire but that is SO not a bad thing.

Hawk delivers. This story is fast paced and with the changes in their lives—like everything changing—John and Caleb and their drakul, Grey are placed between a rock and a hard place no matter where they turn. Enter a new partner, an actual agent partner, named Zahira as well as a boss who makes no bones about how he feels about the pair/trio in his employ and then stir in a hunt more deliciously crafted than I’ve seen in years and you’ve got Jordan’s latest offering.

I love reading Gray’s adaptive methods and the tug of war he and Caleb have over the frailties and perplexities of human nature are some of the best parts of the book.
The inclusion of a raven mocker just takes it over the top. Really, fantastic inclusion of that mythos. So great.

I highly recommend this book, this series, this author. Seriously, absolutely fantastic read.

Another good addition to an excellent series. Things have changed a lot in this next part of the series. Gray is a permanent part of the trio now, and things at the office have really changed since the events of the last book. They have a new boss, who is a real jerk, and people keep leaving funny little "pranks" for Caleb/Gray, proving that people never really outgrow being a high school bully.

There are, of course, some more growing pains, as Caleb feels guilty about possibly tanking John's career, but I get the feeling John doesn't regret anything. Excited to go on with the series, but based on reviews for the most recent book, I think I might wait until this arc is complete, as I don't have patience for cliffhangers.

An absolutely brilliant start to the second, of what has to be one of the most entertaining, kick ass, action packed urban paranormal m/m series out there! If you've followed the adventures of Jordan Hawk's SPECTR guys from the beginning, then you'll know exactly what I mean; if you haven't, then what are you waiting for? GO GO GO, and download Hunter of Demons: Book 1— which as I'm writing this, is still—amazingly---a free download…or treat yourself to the complete series one set…but be warned! Once started, this series is extremely hard to put down. An urban paranormal universe, that over the course of the first six novellas will have you totally gripped by its ingenious, seriously addictive story lines, that just get more exciting and hair raising as they motor along.

Fast paced and never losing momentum, Jordan Hawk has created a compelling mix of preternatural action and adventure, with an intriguingly unusual threeway relationship between a trio of deliciously diverse characters who have developed into one of my favourite 'ménage's'. Two flesh and blood men: SPECTR Special Agent John Starkweather and, as he starts out in the beginning, minor telekinetic Caleb Jansen and Gray, a powerful Drakul entity who posses him (think vampire of sorts). A complicated relationship that over the first season has grown from a shaky, convoluted love triangle into a strong, united in love and trust trinity, that has developed slowly over the six books but finally cemented itself in the series' explosive (and literally) stormy finale. Omg! I had a catch up session to refresh my memories of series one and I'd forgotten how fabulous the whole set up was, but especially the heart thumping, nail biting ending that was just sooo good!...

Audiobook review

This series starts out about six months after the first ended. I would recommend starting from the beginning to really understand what’s going on and all the nuances of this series.

When we catch up with our guys, John, Caleb and Gray are working for SPECTR. But it’s an uneasy partnership (from the agency’s side). Many of them are afraid of Gray and fearing him getting out of control, and the open hostility is wearing the trio down. Added to it is their new boss really doesn’t like John and goes out of his way to make life difficult. The trio and their new partner, rookie agent Zahira are tasked with stopping a demon from its killing spree, but things get a bit dicey seeing as said demon could fly.

Mocker of Ravens was another good addition. I can’t get enough of these characters. I loved how our trio’s relationship felt more real than it had (to me) before. Yes they are solid, but they also have issues that they need to work through. There have been many changes for all of them and they need to learn to accept those changes and figure out a way to live with them long term – and not only surviving in the moment.

Brad Langer once again did a stellar performance and sucked the listener into the story from the start. We lived in the story beginning to end. We felt the thunder and storms, the love between the men. We saw the rubber duckies flying in battle and felt the intensity of the hunts. I also loved Gray’s jealousy when John was hit on – it was funny – not that he thought so, but for the listener it was fun to watch this five thousand year old drakul be jealous - of a woman no less. Genders and pronouns is just mortal nonsense to this drakul and the concept of what gay means is not something he's grasped yet.

I’m looking forward to see what else this series will bring.

I enjoyed this new series segment. Not too sure about the narrator to start with, but it was easy to get used to it after a couple of minutes. The new partner is a nice addition too. I still love Gray. <3

I like the simpler one case plot line and the idea of the raven mocker. Definitely going to read/listen to the rest in the series.

Sometimes saving the world just isn’t enough. After the events of the finale in series two, you’d think these guys would won some respect. But nope, it’s more of a tentative acceptance it seems. Struggling to cope under a new dickhead boss and co-worker with attitudes aren't, the guys are given a case that puts them up against an NHE with a seriously freaky power.

The chemistry between all three partners in this unusual triad is palpable, vividly drawn, and sexy hot. They still have many things to work through, and we see some of them coming out nicely in this book.

I'd not noticed in the prior books that Gray’s parts are written in present tense and the rest of the POVs are in past tense. That might be because while I read Hunter of Demons as a freebie ebook, the rest I listened to on audio. Noticing that point of view tense shift in this book threw threw me a bit, but at the same time I do understand why its used. Gray is a creature that lives in the present rather than dwelling in the past or living in the future as humans do. Really rather cool when considered in that way.

Nicely paced with just the right amount of sexy times, action, and angst. The guys get a new partner, Zahira, and I absolutely adored her. Hope we will get to know more about her.

Oh dear, I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy this book as much as the previous ones but I found myself skipping at times and rushing to the end. It's a shame as I thoroughly enjoyed the first series of SPECTR and I adore Gray, John and Caleb and their solid relationship. Hopefully I'll enjoy Dancer of Death more.

Jordan Hawk delivers another entertaining read with Mocker of Ravens. I love the SPECTR series and revisiting with John, Caleb, and Gray. I am fully sold on their relationship and enjoy watching it further develop. I'm intrigued by their new partner, Zahira; she's a hoot! I continue to loathe SPECTR staff, including and most especially their new boss, Barillo. What. An. Ass.

Bottom line: I am THRILLED J.H. has continued this series! Moving on to Dancer of Death.

Another good installment in this series. It's a few months down the road from the end of the first serial. John, Caleb and Gray are still working for Spectr but neither human is completely happy. Their co-workers treat them horribly and their new boss in the worst (I'm hoping Gray will get to kill him at some point). They get a new partner in this and I like her a lot. The story was fast paced and entertaining as usual and of course smoking hot.

The narrator for this series is Super good. I love the way he goes back and forth between Caleb and Gray. And let me tell you......Gray on audio, hot, hot, hot!

Oh, thank you, Jordan L. Hawk. I was so worried that this series would end after the sixth book, 'Summoner of Storms', and I honestly didn't know what to do with myself if that happened. Luckily for me, the author must have listened to all of the SPECTR fans because she started a second series with the same characters. Personally, I think it's a great idea. SPECTR One dealt with how Caleb came to be possessed by Gray, how they started working together with John, an agent of SPECTR, how the three of them fell in love, and how they managed to root out the evils the higher-ups in the organization were up to. Now SPECTR Two can continue. To say I'm jumping for joy is putting it mildly.

"John’s mouth went cotton-dry. He tried to swallow, but his throat felt sticky. How could this have happened? He’d laid his life on the line to stop Forsyth, and this was the thanks he got? And Caleb. Goddess, he’d thrown away his last chance at a normal life, refused exorcism. He’d sacrificed everything, and this was how people looked at him, how SPECTR saw him…"

Sometimes Caleb wonders why he didn't tell SPECTR to kiss off after the events at Fort Sumter last summer. Hell, he knows why. John and Gray enjoy the work too much. But ever since the events of last summer, all the rest of the agents ignore Caleb/Gray, are outwardly frightened of them, or pull stupid pranks like garlic oil on their office doorknob. Sigh. John swears it'll get stopped eventually; he just has to keep filing his complaints. Yeah, he's still Boy Scout Agent John. But, I think it's safe to say, John is getting a little tired of wearing the badges and getting no respect, especially since if it wasn't for Caleb/Gray and John, almost all of the agents would be dead, and demons would be running loose on the eastern seaboard.

I loved the plot revolving around the mocker of ravens. Another intriguing demon that keeps Caleb/Gray and John, plus their new partner, Zahira, on their toes. Apparently Zahira, fresh out of the academy, is the only agent who is willing to work with them. That's okay; she turns out to be pretty amazing herself.

It's so incredibly easy to get caught up in this world. The author's writing is, as always, phenomenal - sharp, clean, witty, and sexy. Lucky for me, the next book in the series releases in just a few weeks so I can feed my addiction. Of course, then I'll be sad because who knows how long after that until the third book? Thank you, Jordan, I'm crazy about these guys and this world.

This is one review for all 5 novellas in the SPECTR Series 2, posted on each novella in this series, because I am wiped out.

I waited 3 years for this second series of SPECTR stories to be finished and they were completely worth the wait. And here I am, already waiting for Series 3. *sigh*

A lot happens with John, Caleb and Gray, and some of it is damn hard to read. All of them are hurt in this series, and worse, they hurt each other. For a while, it seemed like they might actually lose against the bad guy, who seemed, unbelievably, to be much stronger than Gray. There were times when I thought Gray and Caleb were actually done, it was pretty freaking scary. But the thing that hurt most was John losing faith in Caleb and Gray, .

The love and the bond between the three of them isn't something that's easily destroyed, though JLH made us suffer for it this time. I loved the additions to the series, namely Kurt & Zahira, though Barillo can GTFO as far as I'm concerned.*I'd be ok with Gray eating him* And I'm super excited about the direction SPECTR 3 seems to be going. I CANNOT WAIT!!! *sigh* *sits down to wait*

Reading this was like the best film in my head ever.

I am a huge fan of Jordan L Hawk, but I can not say enough things about this series in particular. SPECTR has already had six wonderful stories with an arc that completed in book 6. This new book is book 1 in a new series (but there is no cliffhanger). Wonderful characterisation and such passion it leaps off the pages. I recommend this series so much.

Re-listen 5.29.19: Still a great listen and a great refresher to get me on to read the rest of SPECTR 2 and 3!!

Original review 5.20.17:
4 Stars!

Loved seeing Caleb, Grey and John back in action!

They now have a new boss who doesn't trust them, coworkers who harass them, and a starstruck, shiny new partner.

They are chasing after a hard-to-catch NHE and getting into all sorts of trouble.

You should really read the SPECTR 1 series before tackling his one.

3.5 stars for this one - really enjoy these three and the situations they find themselves in ! The start of this new series didn't quite have the "grab" for me but I'm sure it will warm up. How can you not love time with John, Caleb & Gray

I finally managed to finish this after 6 years, 😅.
-I quite like Zahira
-John’s naivety/ dogged loyalty, with, and making excuses for Specter is really getting annoying
-I absolutely hate their new boss (like to such a degree that I’m not sure I will continue with the series)

Caleb, John and Gray are back! YESSSS!!! And it was wonderful!

Mocker Of Ravens is the first book in the second series of the SPECTR series… Let me explain this a bit better. The first SPECTR series is the first six books. With Mocker of Ravens we start a new bunch of adventures next to our favorite exorcist (John), our favorite paranormal (Caleb) and our favorite demon that is not a demon because he is a drakul (Gray). Please, don’t go on reading this thinking that is a sort of spin off that can be read separately from the first series. It is not. You totally need all the knowledge that came from the first six books. Do not fret, though – If you haven’t read any of the books, I promise that you won’t regret reading them. Especially not if you like PNR. The story is exciting, and the chracters are original and tremendously fun to read. There is also lots of hot everywhere! Ha!

Ok. About this book…

In this new installment our heroes are set for a new adventure, a new mystery to solve. Turns out that there is a demon in town; this demon is a Raven Mocker. What Raven Mockers do is that they take the hearts of people and eat them, this way they take the years that these people have left to live, and add them to their own demon lifespan. (I always feel like I make no sense when I’m trying to explain these books… Geez). Anyhow. The thing is that our heroes need to find out who was the person who summoned the demon into their body.

The book flows well. There are new characters that take place for the ones that left in the past book. One of the new additions is Zahira, who is the new partner in the Caleb/Gray/John partnership. I swear that her enthusiasm was hilarious. Like, really, you can’t find a person more excited to work with the Drakul. She was absolutely fascinated by Gray. There are many things that make Zahira interesting, one of them is that she’s a diverse secondary character, and I really can’t wait to read more about her.

Besides the demon hunting and new partner, there are other things that happen in the book. Some of these things have to do with the trio trying to adapt to the new life they have. There are changes. The drakul is here to stay and it’s no secret. People distrust Caleb and Gray, and they can be mean and judgemental… Not to mention the wave of homophobic assholeness they have to deal with. We finally get to see Caleb losing control a bit, not in the i’m-powerful-and-want-more sense, but in the emotional sense. I think that in the first series he really managed to keep it together (considering the I have a drakul living inside me who eats demons and enjoys sexual intercourse innuendo), but because here they have to deal with fear of people, now constant, and pretty much irreversible, and they also have to face lots of ingratitude from those who they saved (pretty much the whole town, to be honest), Caleb starts to break down, and to some extent, so does John. Fantastic, amazing, caring, loving, John.

I have to say that this series is one of my favorite PNR I’ve read in a long time. The characters go really well together, and it’s always a joy to read them. The stories are entertaining and the gore element is wonderful – Good enough to freak you out a bit without leaving you sleepless for a week, which is pretty great, if you ask me. I’m still to find out why this work as a sort of separate series, maybe I missed it?

Anyway, to wrap this up – I totally recommend this for PNR lovers, and those who are looking something fun and entertaining to read.

****Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance®****

I love this series and am so glad that it is continuing! It is the perfect blend of paranormal/horror and romance with a dash of humor thrown in.

Some of my favourite parts are Caleb and Gray’s internal conversations. They are as insightful as they are funny. They bring a much needed lightness to the otherwise grim background of the story. The boys are being treated horribly, after saving everyone in the previous series, and a new NHE threat is on the loose.

I also liked the introduction of their new partner and look forward to seeing more of Zahira. I think she will bring great things to the team.
The sex, as always, is hot. I loved the scene in the storm. I love how the ménage is managed with only two bodies.

The energy of the book was fast paced and kept me riveted. I am looking forward to the next installment already!

We are back with John, Caleb, and Gray and I couldn't be happier! I loved the previous SPECTR series and MOCKER OF RAVENS starts off series 2 with a bang. John and Caleb are back with SPECTR but the other agents are reluctant to trust Caleb and Gray after everything that happened at Fort Sumter. One thing I loved in this one now that John and Caleb have established their relationship is how supportive they are of each other. Their relationship, with Gray included, was just so sweet and sexy. I also loved the addition of Zahira, their new partner, and I hope she sticks around for a while.

Very good read - another enjoyable sequel! Maybe it was good to have some time gap between the last one and this most recent one.

So the story felt new and interesting, although it is not so much different from the others in the series.

Caleb/Gray and John are in an established relationship for some time now and the murder mystery was in focus.

It was a very enjoyable and fast paced read with a solid plot.

I loved the SPECTR 1 series and this first installment of the SPECTR 2 series is just as great!
John, Caleb and Gray are again hot together, the chemistry between them and the dynamics of their relationship awesome.
The current assignment, hunting down another dangerous NHE, a raven mocker, is entertaining to follow.
Their new partner Zahira Noorzai seems pretty cool, but I really hate their new boss Barillo!

I'm looking forward to reading the next books in this series!

These are fun, quick stories. I do wish they were longer, but they manage to cram a good amount of action and romance and conflict into a small space.

And I love the new partner! I can't wait to see what she gets into next.

I went into this season two with mild expectations and they were met but it also left me kinda meh.

John has turned out into a full blown damsel in distress bottom and Caleb is...why is caleb still here? He's basically non existant until its time to be offended by something/someone.

I liked the mistery tho so the book was enjoyable, Im just not liking the main couple. I like Gray but I'm so over John and poor Caleb might as well been absorbed by his NHE because he's really faded to the backdrop.

Maybe ill give book 2 a try but if nothing changes I guess its the end of the series for me because its a little boring in the romance aspect.
