Watchers and Angels are at war. Which side will Ember choose?

Humankind is on the precipice of the apocalypse.

As the Demons grow bolder and the walls between the planes of existence weaken, Ember is forced to develop her powers as quickly as possible, and she seeks out a powerful earth Watcher to continue her supernatural lessons. But her new mentor has his own agenda, making her question everyone and everything she ever trusted.

When Ember is thrust into the world of the Watchers, she learns of their plans—ones that defy the scripture and make them enemies of the Celestial Host. Ridding the world of evil gets complicated when it becomes impossible to take sides.

"I loved joining Rose and Noah during their journey in the Temptation series by Karen Hopkins."-Katie McGarry, acclaimed YA author

Karen Ann Hopkins resides in northern Kentucky with her family on a farm that boasts a menagerie of horses, goats, sheep, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigs, dogs, and cats. Karen rescues and fosters a variety of pets and farm animals, but she also finds time to give riding lessons, coach a youth equestrian drill team, and of course, write. She was inspired to create her first book, Temptation, by the Amish community she lives in. The experiential knowledge she gained through her interactions with her neighbors drove her to create the story of the star-crossed lovers, Rose and Noah.

Karen grew up about a mile from Lake Ontario in Upstate New York. She was bitten by the horse bug at the age of five, and after diligently taking riding lessons for several years, she was rewarded with her first horse at the age of eleven. The feisty horse's name was Lady, a Quarter Horse-Thoroughbred cross, who became Karen's steadfast companion. Through the years, the constant force in her life was horses. Eventually, Karen found her place as a riding instructor herself. Before accepting her fate in the barnyard, she worked a short stint as a paralegal, traveled abroad, and guided tourists on horseback riding tours in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Karen is currently working on her two interconnecting mystery/crime fiction series, Serenity's Plain Secrets and Possum Gap, along with several new projects.

I mentioned in my review of Embers that it was one of the best Angel/Demons book that I have ever read and I still stand by that statement. Embers left me wanting for more that's why my hands was itching to hold and read the sequel. Like with every series that I love, I was afraid that Gaia will suffer from Second Book Syndrome. But Gaia did not disappoint, in fact, it even surpassed my expectations.

If you're like me and you admired Ember so much in the first book, you'll love her even more here. She is straight up badass and her character growth is just superbly shown. You will really see her maturity. She was a kid who learned about Angels and Demons and Watchers in EMBERS and she have no idea what to do with all of those information, but here in GAIA, she's a woman with a mission. A mission that she can't afford to fail.

Secondary characters really shined in here too like Sawyer, Ivan and Piper. Sawyer was phenomenal! He's not here to please you and if you think Ember is badass.... then Sawyer is the master of all badasses. This guy knows how to make a girl's heart melt, but he also knows how to make them scream from terror. We already learned that Sawyer is a demon from the first book but I feel like there's still A LOT to know about him. Even Piper and Ivan showed what they're capable of. I love how Hopkins made them more than props. They actually have a part in the whole story and how they helped our main character was just incredible!

Gaia is an explosion! Just when I thought Hopkins couldn't do anything that will caught me off guard, she surprised me with a sequel like this! Truly, Hopkins is one of the best authors in this generation and I'm just incredibly happy that I get to experience her brilliance! Its not too late to catch up, be sure to grab a copy of Embers immediately!

I've been dying to read this book since I finished the last one - about a year ago. The first book of the series, Embers, was phenomenal - and I was so excited to see what was going to happen next. I know that at times the first book in a series can be awesome, only to completely tank in the following installments. I wasn't really afraid of this happening with this series though - I've read several of the author's other books and they were all fantastic. Luckily, I definitely wasn't disappointed - the story went far beyond any hopes I may have had. Ember continues to be a fantastic main character. She's a smart, strong - emotionally and physically - and determined heroine who remains realistic and easy to identify with because of her faults and weaknesses. She's cautious and level-headed, and down to earth. Ember's character grew a lot in the first book after she learned her true identity and fate. She continues to mature and grow as a character in this book as well. We see her rise to the occasion several times throughout the story when she's faced with obstacles and big problems, and I loved watching her character mature and grow more confident and sure of herself.
The plot was unique and riveting - I was hooked from the first few words of the book and didn't stop reading until I had finished the entire novel. It's a wonderful blend of several genres, ranging from paranormal and fantasy to action and adventure and even some romance. The author effortlessly wove these various types of fiction together to create a one of a kind book (and series) that keeps me begging for more. It was easy to relate to Ember, and the author's descriptions throughout the book were vivid and detailed - to the point that I could imagine myself in the story beside Ember while everything is happening. I continued to love learning about the Watchers - their history, purpose, the war between factions, the coming rapture and end times - it gave a deeper level to the story and helps to set it apart from others in the genre. The book was definitely fast paced and had me devouring each page to see what was going to happen next. I very highly recommend this book to fans of paranormal fiction along with those who enjoy fantasy, action, adventure, and apocalyptic fiction. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next book's release to see where things will go next. There's tons of potential for the story line and the series, and paired with an author who has an amazing gift - I can't wait to read the rest!

The End, ba da boom ba da bing! BINGO BANGO!! Talk about CRAZY! Mrs. Hopkins does a marvelous job of not only starting this read with thrilling excitement she uses that very same element to bring it to a close! Is it a cliff hanger ending not per say but it is very much…OH MY Word…Did that just happen? Wow so many questions were answered and yes she has set up the next installment very nicely. This is unlike any other read that has to do with angels, I don’t know how it will end but my heart has high hopes. All of the YA elements are covered and our very amazing lead character overcomes obstacles and impresses left and right. I am highly anticipating the next and what will happen when the show down of all show downs take place!! Eeeeeeeeep!

My Rating

Disclaimer: This review MAY contain spoilers.

This series is so addicting! I thought that the first book was great, but this one was so much better! The first book was intriguing and got me hooked. This book dove deep into the world of Watchers and got me lost in the world.

I loved the introduction of new characters in this book. I loved the characters from the first book, and I continued to adore them throughout this one. Ivan is such a gem of a character. He is the absolute sweetest sidekick and I love him to bits. If anything happens to him in this series I will riot! Seriously though, he's awesome. And Horas is just as noble and lovable as Ivan. He is a demon and yet he helps Ember without question. He is loyal to her and her friends and he doesn't let his demon side overtake his actions. He is not evil. I am looking forward to more of him in this series. I liked Ember's character progression. She has been thrust into a brand new world that she is a part of but knows nothing about. She has to struggle with learning about her powers and where she fits into the puzzle. The Watchers and the Angels are at odds and Ember doesn't know which side is in the right and which is in the wrong. In this book, she faces more heartache, betrayal, and forgiveness. She is a strong and stubborn character and I truly like her. She doesn't blindly follow anyone and she makes her own choices regardless of outside opinions. She always does what she thinks is right. Sawyer is still loyal to Ember. He loves her and he is waiting patiently for her acceptance. My favorite new character is Insepth. He is a very fun character. He is kind of arrogant, but in a playful way. I love his personality. I was leery of his character at the beginning since his intentions weren't really known. Insepth is a tricky character. He does things in this book that are unforgivable, but he didn't do them out of malice. He did them because he felt they were the right thing to do. So that always makes things complicated. Ember's forgiveness is really inspiring. We also get to meet some other Watchers and even some Angels in this book. I look forward to getting to know them more.

The plot becomes so much more clear in this book. Not everything is revealed, obviously, but the reader definitely has a better understanding of the stakes and the struggles ahead. I really love where the story is going. I love how creative Hopkins' take on Angels and Demons is.

The world-building is definitely expanded upon in this book. I loved getting a deeper look at Watchers and I also liked that we get to see Angels in this book.

I am actually liking the romance in this book. It was so tentative throughout this book while Ember decided what her real feelings for Sawyer were. She kept him at arm's length throughout most of the book. Not unkind or unloving, but cautious. She just wanted to make sure that her feelings for him were true and not something brought on by the guardian bond. And she wanted to take things slow since she hadn't had any previous relationships. I like where things are going and I'm curious how they will turn out. I feel like Insepth may be a potential love interest at some point. He definitely gives off the vibe that he is into her. I guess we'll see.

Overall, this was an excellent second-in-series book! The stakes were raised, the conflict was brought to the forefront, and things get real. This book had plenty of action, magic, and great character development. I am excited about the next book and I totally recommend this series to all paranormal fans!

The ending to Embers was explosive and I have been pretty excited to get this second book in my hand ever since November! Even so, I was a little fuzzy on the details, but a peruse of my review and the fact that Gaia starts right where we ended helped out so much.

This book series guys, it is SO good. The writing is well-done, the lore is fascinating and has its own twists and unique spins, and the story is uber-good. I don't know what it is about angel series set in wilderness, but they make me want to be an outdoors person. Which is ironic, because I am the opposite of an outdoors person.

That aside, this book has a LOT of stuff happening. The world is coming to an end, so of course Embers and her rag-tag team have to save it. This book starts off with so much action, and it never really lets up. You are constantly at the edge of your seat, just wondering what is going to happen next. I love the adrenaline pumping that these pages induced.

Embers is a great character and she continues to grow in her personality and her powers throughout this second book. And I loved/hated all the people in the book. I felt like I was giving everyone side-eye, just waiting for them to be untrustworthy. This book is all about the grey in the world of black and white, right and wrong.

I LOVED that two people we only briefly meet in Embers, best friend Piper and Ember's brother are more prominent in this story. Hopkins did a great job of fleshing out these side characters and bringing them into the fold. Sawyer, the other perspective of this story, still has an air of mystery, even though his care for Embers is apparent. Of the two, I definitely loved reading through Embers eyes. She's just a really fun, interesting person.

If you thought (or I guess, if I thought) Embers had a crazy end, this one just kinda blows everything away. It's left me with that "hurry up and wait" feeling... I can't stop reading and I have to hurry through the pages only to have to wait FOR-EV-VER for the next part of the story.

Embers and Gaia's stories match the true beauty of their covers and I absolutely cannot wait for more of this epic series.

Demons are running loose and Ember needs to find a new mentor to help develop and control her powers.
As Ember learns more about Watchers she also finds out more about Angels.
Can Ember trust her new mentor?
What will Ember’s position be in the upcoming battle?

Gaia was an interesting, action-packed read.
Ember was likeable but sometimes her actions contradicted what she was thinking/saying. I liked reading as Ember grew stronger and learned more about her inheritance.
The plot was good with lots of action and a storyline that held my attention but I wasn’t gripped. There were some good twists but there were also some things that I saw coming. It was good to see more of Piper and Ember’s brother.
The romance was put on the backburner which I liked as I wasn’t a fan of the romance in the first book.
I enjoyed Gaia a lot more than the first book.

Overall this was an enjoyable read.

A good sequel

Gaia is a complex and interesting sequel to the first book in the series. The romance between Ember and Sawyer takes a backseat to the introduction of a whole slew of rich characters and a lot of action. A very unique take on Biblical prophecy.

**Review posted at https://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/ **

Gaia, book 2 in The Wings of War series, picks up just moments after Embers ends, with the world as Ember knows it crashing around her head. Her mentor sacrificed her life to save Ember, her guardian barely alive, an epic supernatural event just wiped out the area- and oh yeah, humans arrived on site to annihilate the paranormal predators- which Ember and company are part of. TO say there are obstacles in Ember's way is an understatement.

I thought the action in this sequel was awesome, full of random twists and the plot went in a completely different direction than I would have ever expected from the start of the first book.
I struggled a little with Ember and her fluctuating feelings towards so many different people in this sequel. For example, was Ember's stubbornness when it came to Sawyer. One minute she felt she couldn't live with out him and then next she wanted nothing to do with him and questioned all her decisions where it came to him. Sure he was a soul-sucking (literally) demon but he was not a bad guy, and he would gladly give his life for her- yet she kept pushing him away! I just wanted them to embrace their romantic feelings already and enjoy the time they had together while battling the potential end of the world! Is that too much to ask for? She ran hot and cold with Sawyer, but also with her trainer and the angels and the watchers...It was a little hard to keep up with what she wanted. I mean for example right at the end she is attempting to kill a character, he survives and then she defends him a moment later from someone else killing. It got to be a little exhausting and I guess we can just say that Ember is a fiery impulsive person who may not really know her own mind.

Piper is my favorite new addition to this rag-tag team of supernatural saviors. She was a burst of energy and acceptance, totally game to go into any dangerous situation right along with Ember, no questions asked. Can I just mention here how weird I thought it was that Ember never called or texted Piper, her lifelong bestie (or her brother Tom for that matter) for the entire duration of her move in the first book (which was roughly a month)?

This installment was exciting, stressful, surprising and heart wrenching. I have no idea what will happen to Ember and her hodge-podge group next, let alone who will actually survive, but I already picked up the next two books in the series so I can find out!

If you are a person of faith looking for books about Adonai’s angels, this is not that - at all. I did understand this was a fictional series, I did not understand it would have nothing to do with actual Kingdom Angels. At all.

Did not like any part of the series; series wasn’t at all what I expected it to be. If you are into occult/fantasy, you may appreciate the series; I escaped that, no interest in going back.

Bought the series; realized about half through Book 1 this was not the series I was looking = did not read the series, but Goodreads regularly says I’m reading books I haven’t started & only way to get it off my list is to say I’ve read them.

GOODREADS: PLEASE offer OPTION to CHANGE those books to “Not reading yet, OR just REMOVE them from actively reading - please. OR a setting that doesn’t automatically make it actively reading because you downloaded & took a LOOK at the book; if that setting exists I’ve not found it, but a “Get out of this” option should STILL BE OBVIOUS OPTION when it is accidentally triggered.

The story continues right where book one left off! Absolutely love that. Now Ember finds another Watcher to help her learn how to use her Earth element, I have to say I got bad vibes from the guy right from the start. Ember went back to see her brother and friend Piper that she left behind before moving to live with Ila, she didn't find either of them in good health and helped them. There is also something strange about Piper with her being sick on and off.. I wasn't even sure if she was Human... but knew she had to be, otherwise the others would be able to sense what she was... Was totally shocked when I found out what was different about her omg! I was so pissed at the betrayal at the end, but I knew something had to be coming... Still wish there was a way to bring Piper back... Now the Angels have showed themselves to Ember and she knows what they are going to do soon. I wonder what she is going to plan now..

As with volume 1, I felt this text could have used at least 1 more round of professional edits. Even so, the errors didn't obstruct meaning or interrupt the plot. The book was a satisfying continuation of the first in the series and answered some of the questions presented in book 1.

I received a free copy of this book as part of the Gaia Book Tour in exchange for my honest opinion .

OMG! This series is so freaking fantastic, you guys! I'm having a hard time reviewing this one because I'm so agghh! Why did it have to end there?! I was dreading those last few pages, I didn't want it to end because now the waiting for the next one is going to kill me!

I don't know if this happens to anyone else but me, but I tend to get suspicious when the book covers are too pretty. Like they are too good to be true. And this book covers are freaking gorgeous! But I'm relieved to say that, in this case, the beautiful covers are the perfect complement for the gorgeous story inside...

I know I'm not making much sense, but I'm writing this right after finishing the book and my mind is in pieces... Let me breathe for a while...

Okay, here we go...

Gaia picks up right where Embers left off which is great since I started this book as soon as I finished the first one and the transition was seamless. The big difference between this installment and the one before is the pace. Since the very beginning there's action and honestly just a whole lot of crap going on, which I love. So make sure you're comfortable and don't have to be anywhere else soon, because you won't be able to put this thing down once you pick it up.

I'm not going to go into much detail about the plot, because I stand by what I said in my review of Embers. It's way better if you don't know what you're getting into. The surprises hit you in the face like a brick and it's freaking awesome.

I should not be amazed at the world-building since it was already pretty well done in Embers. But the depth it shows in Gaia was monumental. I've not read the Bible since I was a kid, but I still got most of the references and the way its text found its place in the backstory of the characters and their purpose was superb. Everything was really well put together and I can't wait to see how all the revelations dropped here and there play out in the next book.

Onto the characters now... I loved Horas addition to the gang. His character makes me really happy for some reason, I loved his relentless teasing and how he could be so sarcastic and snarky even in the most dire moments. I just love him to bits.

I also really enjoyed spending time with Piper, since she was often mentioned in the first book but we didn't see much of her all in Embers. Also Timmy! I'm glad they both had a place in this book, because I felt like we should know these characters that meant so much to Ember.

Ember keeps growing as a character throughout this book. Her powers are growing and she's also discovering where her loyalties lie. She struggles a lot to find balance between right and wrong in this book, because everything is mostly different shades of grey and I really enjoyed seeing her trying to make the best decisions in the most impossible situations. She's just overall a great main character.

We finally meet the famous Insepth in this book and he's a handful. He's really powerful and cocky and unbelievably resourceful. But he's also mysterious and has his own agenda. Sawyer also got his mystery back. We know he really cares for Ember, but there's still just something about him though. I think I trust him, but the thing is that every freaking character in this book made me uneasy! I had a really hard time trusting people in this book. When things were nice and quiet I could feel myself just waiting for the other shoe to drop, thinking "I don't trust you Karen! I know you're up to something!". And then bam! Like an nuclear explosion everything went to hell and then there were even more characters and HUGE revelations and my heart could barely take it when it ended.

I can't wait for the next book. This series is one of my favorite angel-themed series of all time. It's very different than what I've read before on angels and I'm enjoying it immensely. I sincerely recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal fantasy, especially people who are looking for more than just a story, because this world is phenomenal and you won't want to get out of it.

When I finished EMBERS, book one of The Wings of War series, I couldn't wait to get the next book. Embers ended with the introduction of a new character who was POWERFUL. I needed to know what role he was going to play in Ember's life. Needless to say, he stirred it up! GAIA started out fast paced with a lot of action. Ember and her friends are placed in even more dangerous situations and have to think quickly and make life-saving decisions. My anxiety levels were high as I read these heart-pounding scenes.

Characters from book one reentered the story and we got to know more about the life that Ember escaped. Many new characters were introduced as Ember's world expands and she realizes that she is just one part of something grander. There were a lot of new characters to keep track of and I was always cautious of who was a friend or a foe. It wasn't always so obvious. Everyone had their own agendas, but her friends always proved to be loyal and I loved how they were all protective of each other.

Like my reaction to Ember and Sawyer's relationship in book one, I wanted more "normal" interactions - if that is even possible - between them. Everything is heightened because of the circumstances of their relationship. I think I just need to accept that the danger and peril is the nature of the story (and stop trying to fit it into the mold of a contemporary young adult romance. That's a different book!) One of my favorite quotes is during a moment as they are about to face danger all around them: "I'd rather die with you than be left behind without you." See! The drama!

I enjoyed reading GAIA just as much as EMBERS. It is a thrilling follow-up. Before finishing it, I found out that there would be a third book in the series so I expected a cliffhanger ending. It did end with one, but it wasn't so major that it left me frustrated. (Honestly I don't mind cliffhangers). And of course it left me wanting to know more. I'm interested to see how Ember embraces her powers and her role in the war between the Angels and Watchers. I can't wait!

Gaia is the second book in the Wings of War series by Karen Ann Hopkins. The book takes off immediately where Embers, the first book, ended and I really liked that. These books are action packed and filled with content. By starting the book off exactly where the other stopped, it allows ou to continue the story without skipping a beat, especially if you're reading the books back to back like I did.

In Embers we discovered the world of watchers and demons but, in Gaia, we're thrown headfirst into the deep end of the watcher world with the introduction of Insepth, Ember's new mentor. Being surrounded by watchers seems the perfect place for Ember but we quickly learn that everyone has their own secrets and that not everyone is who they say - or think - they are.

Aside from Insepth, we meet a lot of new people in Gaia. A mansion full of watchers, angels, demons, growlers, humans. We even get to spend more time with Piper and learn the greater role that she plays in Embers life, something that I had been curious about since the beginning of book one.

This book was filled with a lot of heart and a lot of pain and an insane amount of action. Gaia is full of battle, power, games and struggle. Ember learns a lot more about herself in this book and finally discovers what she is fully capable of. She's being taught a ton of new things by her mentor but she's also forced into a lot more.

Where Embers was about a human girl entering a supernatural world, Gaia was about a powerful supernatural being leaving the world of humanity behind and embracing the things that make her powerful.

Gaia was a great book and I can't wait to see how all hell breaks loose in the next installment.

Angels! Demons! An incredible/strong/smart/etc female main character! Wonderful writing and an interesting plot! Beyond beautiful covers! How can this be bad? (Answer: it can't and it isn't).

I'm always a little nervous about the second book in a series, especially when I loved the first book to pieces. While I enjoyed Embers just a tiny bit more, GAIA is a solid sequel. It has the same intensity and flawlessness present in the first one. It is fast-paced (which I love) and continues to develop one of my favorite main characters EVER. Trust me on this one, Ember is fantastic. A great main character can only carry you so far but luckily GAIA has a lot more to offer. I was hooked from the very first page, which happened with Ambers as well. The story, the way it is written, and the world left me speechless. I couldn't walk away from it until I reached the end...and I wanted to read slower about 90% in because I didn't want it to end. Props to Karen Ann Hopkins for putting together so many incredibly elements in such a magnificent way.

The Wings of War Series is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. These books fall into the "Don't Bother Me, Even If You're On Fire" category so set aside a couple of hours before you start. All I have left to do now is wait for the next one. I'll just sit here until then.

The thrilling second installment in The Wings of War series was as exciting and action packed as the first book, if not more.

Where Embers was full of mystery and suspense regarding Ember and her new found powers, as well as the compound and its inhabitants, this book saw her grow into her abilities as an extremely powerful Watcher. It also shone a light on the history that caused a rift between her kind, and was much darker, showing the devastation that threatened to tear the world apart.

This book was full of adventure, heart ache and even a bit of romance. I enjoyed the references to real life events, and the way Hopkins intertwined them with her characters' lives. I will admit that Ember and Sawyer's relationship still baffled me, because one minute they were all for it and the next it was like Ember couldn't think of being with a demon in that way. And, while I applauded her cautious manner where the reality of the situation was concerned, I really wish she had made up her mind on whether or not she wanted to be with him romantically. Her indecision kind of took away the excitement of their romance.

Readers of all ages will thoroughly enjoy this tale that puts a new spin on angels, demons and the apocalypse.

I loved the cover for Embers and GAIA is just as gorgeous if not more.

It will be a year ago on the 4th of September that I finished the last page of Embers and was left completely blown away and begging for more. It was the best feeling opening my kindle app and seeing this ready for me to start and devour!

From the first page we're swept back into the world of Angel's, Demons & Watchers. A war is brewing and Ember seems to be right in the middle of it being forced to choose a side. Will she choose the right one? You'll have to read to find out. ^_^

I love watching Ember's character grow and learn to weld her powers, she's sharp-witted, strong and so easy to connect with. She's fast becoming one of my fave heroines.

Hopkins has written another brilliant page turner, with twists and turns, vivid details and captivating characters, you'll be sure to get caught up like I did. I can not wait for the next book!

If you haven't started these books yet, then I highly recommend picking up Embers and starting now, you won't regret it. ^_^

This second book in the Wings of War series, is just as entertaining and compelling as the first. Fortunately, I already had books one and two so I continued reading without stopping.

Last night when I finished book two, I immediately downloaded book three. This series is amazing and extremely hard to put down. My only complaint is I haven't got a clue how the Bible scriptures fit the story, but so far, I've been more intrigued by the characters and story line to give the verses more than a passing read.

What an absolutely fabulous, fantastic and addicting read!

Gaia has surpassed my expectations. An absolutely incredible follow-up to Embers! Watchers, demons, angels and elements - this is not to be missed! Truly outstanding read!

This Wing of War series is perfect for paranormal (especially bookish peeps who love reading about angels and demons) romance readers!

Looking forward to reading the next book, Tempest!

A great second book to the series. I just stumbled on the Wings Of War Series through a page on Facebook that gives away free/discounted books. I only started reading them a few days ago, and I just finished reading both! I can't wait for the next one!
