France is dying beneath plague, war, and fear. As villages empty and faith fractures, a disgraced knight is given one last chance at escort a young orphaned girl across a country being consumed by violence, disease, and forces far darker than either of them understands. Their journey carries them through ruined towns, abandoned roads, forests where the dead do not always remain dead, and a medieval world in which the boundary between the earthly and the infernal is collapsing. The knight must protect the girl while confronting his own failures, even as supernatural evil closes in around them. Blending medieval historical fiction, occult horror, and dark fantasy, Between Two Fires is a grim, atmospheric tale of survival, faith, guilt, and redemption set against an apocalyptic vision of fourteenth-century France.
Such a different vibe compared to everything I have read. What starts out as a gritty story of a disgraced knight and an orphaned girl, slowly develops into an epic and grotesque story with some of the wildest imagery I have read. I would love to see a film/TV adaptation of this but I don't think anything other than the human imagination could do it the justice it deserves.
It also has lovely, quiet moments peppered throughout it that I think will really stick with me.
What a beautiful book.

To be honest it may have lost a quarter of a star because it was set in France and I had to keep googling French words I didn't know how to pronounce. 😂
A new all time favorite. Beautifully weaves bits of medieval surrealism into the horror elements making for a constantly dreary and eerie atmosphere. I also really appreciate the inclusion of Christianity as a mythology rather than specifically a religion.
This book was about twice as long as it needed to be. I also totally understand that Divine Intervention should make an appearance in a book like this, it was used entirely too frequently to just skip over entire situations. The horror part of this book was also extremely oversold. The plot was rather nonsensical and overall I just feel frustrated with myself I spent so much time hoping this would get better when it just got worse and worse. Extremely disappointing.

This was definitely different from my normal reads but how could I resist a book set during the 1300s plague era of France. Not to mention angels and demons.
