Christian Romance: The Ultimate Path [Contemporary Christian Romance]
Reba McKinley is facing the job that will set the path of her career. As a realtor, she has been hired to work with Davidson Development Incorporated (DDI) to acquire a strip of land in Port Johnson for DDI to develop into a set of specialty shops that will cater to the large tourist population that Port Johnson attracts with their Blackberry Trail festival. No one in town is excited for this new development, but Reba just knows it will help the town thrive.
Nash Roberts, a fisherman and hard-working owner of a charter boat company, scoffs at the thought of selling his home. It’s been in his family for generations and the fact that his neighbors are selling out like flies drop dead in the summer frustrates him even more. He just wants to live and work in piece.
When the two meet for the first time, it has nothing to do with DDI. They both have an addiction to Cuppa Joe’s home-roasted coffee beans and an affinity to the town’s well-known blackberry queen, Mona Smith.
When Reba discovers that Nash, her coffee-house-crush, is the only one who won’t sell his home, she sets to work to convince him. Nash is just as stubborn, if not more so, than Reba and won’t give in.
Faced with failure, which isn’t acceptable in her book, Reba goes behind Nash’s back and discovers that he is behind on his payments for his charter service. In an act of conniving (for which she feels terrible about later) she calls the city inspector and he demands that Nash make a bunch of repairs and changes to his home in order to come up to code. With his financial situation he won’t be able to make the payments.
Only after she forces him into this corner does she learn that he was a foster child at a young age when his parents (who had been estranged from his grandparents) died. Only when he turned 16 did his grandparents find him and ask him to come live with him. They owned the home and he spent many years living with them after they put him through college where he got a masters degree in business. He fell in love with the home he’d never really known.
Reba feels awful and is also finding out that Nash (who she initially just liked to bicker with in a flirtatious way) is actually a kind, caring, and intelligent man with a lot to offer, more so than his fishing charter career shows.
Nash is beyond angry, wishing he’d never fallen for Reba, but he sees that maybe it was God who was telling him to move on. Still, the thought of being forced out of his house—his grandparents pride and joy—makes him sick. Though, at the end of the day, he’s realizing it’s not about things, it’s about God’s will.
Reba, convicted of how terrible she’d acted just to get ahead in her career, throws it all away to save Nash’s place. She finds out (through extensive research and a best friend) that Nash’s house qualifies for a special Repair Grant. She fills out the paper work for him and assures him the repair cost.
Then, on a chance Nash and Reba end up at the same pier – the day before Nash has decided to leave town – and Reba tells him she was wrong. He’s already forgiven her, though he was going to leave without telling her. He’s shocked she went to so much trouble to fix things. She explains to him that she’d lost sight of what was really important, family.
