Running away didn't solve anything ... at least, not the first time.
Intensive care nurse Mackenzie Jones is no stranger to running. As a teenager she fled her family home, leaving tragedy and loss in her wake. Now, after fifteen years alone in Sydney, with the strain of working in a city hospital wearing her thin, she's tempted to run again.
Mackenzie jumps at the chance to work in a mining town in the Western Australian desert – anything to lift her spirits. Though she barely dares to hope, she wonders if she might find the kind of love that can ease her loneliness.
In the outback, Nathan Kennedy is at a loose end. He's been making money in the mines for years, and pressure from his family to return to the east coast, settle down and get married is reaching fever pitch. The problem is, he hasn't met the right woman.
When Mackenzie turns up in town, there's an instant attraction between her and Nathan, maybe even true love. But tragedy's not done with Mackenzie Jones – the past is about to catch up with her in more ways than one.
Can Nathan convince Mackenzie to stop running, or is this just another tragedy in the making?
Nicki Edwards is a city girl with a country heart. Growing up on a small family acreage on the outskirts of Geelong, she spent her formative years riding horses and pretending the neighbour’s farm was her own.
After spending three years in a regional city in New South Wales, her love of small country towns was further developed. One day she plans to escape to the country with her husband Tim and live on land, surrounded by horses, dogs, cows and sheep. Until then she lives vicariously through the lives of the characters in the rural romance novels she loves to read.
In 2006, when Nicki’s youngest child started school, she returned to university, juggling full time study, part time work and raising four small children, to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse. Always a voracious reader, Nicki’s other dream was to be an author. Nicki writes medical rural romance for Momentum and when she isn’t reading, writing or dreaming about rural life and medical emergencies, she can be found working as a Critical Care Nurse in a busy Intensive Care Unit, where many of her stories and characters are imagined.
Nicki and Tim reside in Geelong, Victoria with their four teenage/young adult children. Life is busy, fun and at times exhausting, but Nicki wouldn’t change it for anything.
Her debut novel, “Intensive Care” was released in January 2015 with Momentum, the digital imprint of Pan Macmillan Australia. Her second novel, “Emergency Response” comes out in October 2015. The third and fourth books in the ‘Escape to the Country’ series, “Life Support” and “Critical Condition” will be released in 2016.
Mackenzie Jones was an intensive care nurse in a big Sydney hospital – the trouble was, fifteen years on in the big city and it still didn’t feel like home. So when the opportunity came for her to work in the Pilbara in WA, she plucked up her courage and applied. Within a short period of time she was on her way to Perth from Sydney, where she would then fly to her new home; three months the contract was for, and she was looking forward to her new position very much.
Her introduction as nurse in the Emergency Department was abrupt and severe. The accident which involved all the staff at the little hospital took most of the night to sort out – Mackenzie was exhausted when she finally entered the house she was to call home for the next little while. And when she bumped into her friend’s brother in the local supermarket a week later, things began to sizzle. Nathan Kennedy had been working in the mines for a lot of years – drifting, earning money, not sure what to do with his life. But when he saw Mackenzie he was smitten…
Just short of the three month conclusion to her contract, Mackenzie was seriously considering extending it. She loved the work, had made quite a number of friends who made her feel very welcome, and of course Nathan was in the vicinity. But suddenly she was called home – a dire emergency had her rushing back to her family. What would happen in the future for Mackenzie? Would she and Nathan remain a couple? She didn’t do long distance relationships...
Emergency Response by Aussie author Nicki Edwards is the second by this author. After a slow start, the pace picked up and moved along nicely. I enjoyed the aspects of the Emergency Department and the cases that came through the doors – some days flat out, others quiet. But Mackenzie annoyed me – in fact I felt like shaking her on occasion! She was portrayed as an insecure, self-centred and selfish young woman and just when I would think she was “growing up” she’d have another spasm! Nathan’s character was great, and the country people; the friendliness and “we’ve got your back” attitude was typical Australian. I loved the descriptions of the Australian Outback as well – that was beautiful. Would I recommend Emergency Response? Definitely!

When an opportunity arose to go and work in a mining town in WA intensive care nurse Mackenzie Jones jumped at the chance. Mackenzie had spent the last fifteen years working in a city hospital in Sydney and she was ready for a change. Even though it was just a three-month contract, she felt it was worth a try.
Nathan Kennedy has been working in the mines for years, but lately he’s family have been pressuring him about settling down and having a family of his own. Only problem was Nathan wasn’t seeing anyone and had no interest in anyone that was until he crossed paths with Mackenzie Jones. The pair had an instant attraction, but was Mackenzie’s past about to catch up with her?
Emergency Response is the second book in the Escape to the Country series by Aussie author Nicki Edwards. I am thoroughly enjoying this series with beautiful descriptions throughout the book and characters who’ll you’ll enjoy and some who’ll you’ll find a bit annoying all of which makes a great read. I’m looking forward to reading the next book to see what happens next.

**3.5 stars** Mackenzie Jones at 35 is feeling pressured to be married and have children, trouble is she's never found 'the one'. Nathan Kennedy , living in the mining community of Iron Ridge for the past 10 years and brother to Mackenzie's friend Kate, is in exactly the same position. Meeting at Kate's wedding there is a slight mutual attraction and feeling a bit jaded about working in the Intensive Care Unit at a busy Sydney hospital, he puts the thought into her head about coming up to Iron Ridge to work. That's how six months later she finds herself in the middle of Iron Ridge, a town in the WA Pilbarra filled with heat and dust, ready to work in the local hospital emergency department for a 3 month contract. Since Mackenzie is a trained ICU nurse she shifts into the emergency environment without being too much out of her comfort zone (even as there is rarely a Dr!) and it was interesting to see the cases that came through the door. Mackenzie does have some insecurities with herself and her family which we come to understand as the story progresses but a developing romance with Nathan is cut short with a family emergency. Emergency Response is a good read, sure it's formulaic and we all know where it's going but the fun is in the journey and it's one I enjoyed. I haven't read Nicky Edward's first book 'Intensive Care' but readers of that book can catch up with Kate and Joel and find out what's happening in their life as well.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for a copy to read and review.
Mackenzie Jones meets the handsome Nathan Kennedy at a wedding, then finds herself on the other side of the country, but working in the same tiny rural town as Nathan. They start seeing each other, but the relationship is cut short when Mackenzie is called back home—her estranged father is dying, and as the oldest child, the unattached child, and the nurse in the family, he becomes her unwelcome responsibility.
The writing was very good. There were some intentionally humorous lines (“she’s got a better backside than Pippa Middleton”) and some I found funny even though they weren’t intended to be (“she had a strong New Zealand accent”. Really. Have these Aussies ever listened to themselves?).
And one part of the story was unexpectedly poignant—a visit to the degazettted town of Wittenoom, site of the blue asbestos mine made famous (to me, at least) by Midnight Oil and their song, Blue Sky Mining. That’s not for the faint-hearted.
Although Nicki Edwards is a Christian, Emergency Response isn’t Christian fiction. This means there is some content you wouldn’t normally see in a Christian novel (e.g. consumption of alcohol), but it is still classified as a “clean read”. Well, except for the blood. But I guess a little blood is to be expected with a medical romance set in rural Australia. Recommended. As long as you don’t mind the blood.

This is the first time that I have ever read one of Nicki Edwards books and I was fortunate enough to win an ARC of the book. This is a book that is really hard to put down.
MacKenzie works in an ICU unit as a nurse at a hospital in Sydney, She decides that she needs a change and then takes a couple of days off and attends her best friends (Kate) wedding.
While at the wedding she meets Kate's brother Nathan. Mackenzie thinks he is really nice and thinks how she would love to be his girl. She thinks that could never happen because like us all she doesn't feel that she would be worthy of someone like him. Mackenzie has self esteem and trust issues. She also has issues like some normal people would have with family and friends.
This book is an awesome book written by an amazing author who makes you feel like you are part of the book. The main characters are not better than the rest of us but are like the rest of us. They feel real because they have real problems. The book was written with feeling. I laughed, I cried and then the book ended.
An amazing read that I will recommend to all my friends and family. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read this book and I will be reading others by Nicki Edwards that's for sure.
This is the second book by Nicki Edwards and I enjoyed it even more than the first. I loved the combination of Australian outback, medical, sweet romance. We get a quick glimpse at what Kate and Joel are up to, but this book focusses on Mackenzie (who used to work with Kate) and Nathan (Kate's brother).
There were many interesting characters who presented at the emergency department in a remote locality hospital. I found it interesting to see how these cases were dealt with, and whether the diagnoses I came up with were correct (based on my vast medical training of reading rural medical romance novels).
I loved the dynamic between Mackenzie and Nathan, full of sexual tension but without graphic descriptions in the bedroom. I swooned at the rock pool and got all choked up on Christmas Day.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I'm looking forward to reading more from Nicki.
I didn’t think it possible, but I enjoyed this book even more than the first in Nicki Edwards’ Escape to the Country series. Mackenzie is such a lovable character, I was with her from the very beginning. Genuinely caring, unassuming and down to earth, with realistic doubts, insecurities and hurts from her past, she was easy to care about and relate to. Her relationship with Nathan was beautiful to watch unfold as he broke down each of her barriers with genuine love. Once again, the Australian scenery was portrayed so well I felt as though I was breathing the very air the characters were. Each medical drama Mackenzie faced in her job was fresh and new and each patient had a life and story of their own. I also loved continuing the journey of the characters from Intensive Care. I can’t wait to read more from Nicki Edwards!
I think I enjoyed Emergency Response even more than Intensive Care. I really enjoyed the story of Mackenzie Jones. She has an interesting journey and, even though she gets the guy early in the book, there are still a lot of twists and turns in her happy ever after journey.
I also like the fact that the main character is in her 30s. So many books I've read lately have women finding love in their 20s.
Nicki Edwards also brings us back to Birrangulla, and shares the stunning scenery of the Pilbara in WA.
Emergency Response is book two in the Escape to the Country by Nicki Edwards. Intensive care nurse Mackenzie Jones need a change. Mackenzie saw an opportunity to work in a mining town in Western Australia, and she applied for the position. However, on arrival in the Pilbara, the first person Mackenzie meets is Nathan Kennedy, and this encounter will alter both their lives. The readers of Emergency Response will continue to follow Mackenzie and Nathan to find out what happens.
Emergency Response is a fantastic addition to this excellent series. I enjoyed reading Emergency Response and this book engaged me from the first page. I love Nicki Edwards portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Emergency Response is well written and researched by Nicki Edwards. Nicki Edwards excellently did the description of the settings of Emergency Response in a way that allowed me to imagine being part of the plot of this book.
The readers of Emergency Response will learn about living in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Also, the readers of Emergency Response will understand the role of an emergency nurse in small communities.
If you like medical romances then you should enjoy this one. There’s plenty of medical drama scattered amongst the emotional turmoil, with plenty of terminology thrown about, so if you like that sort of thing then this should be for you. There’s also a slow-burning romance, some personal revelations and a really lovely look at the desert lands of Western Australia – which isn’t nearly as dry or as deserted as you might expect.
I enjoyed this one. Nathan is a nice guy, if a little aimless when it comes to the future, while Mackenzie is likewise rootless and searching for something to ground her. They’re both decent people, and I loved how Mackenzie grew in confidence when it came to her nursing skills. The pair of them together are sweet too, and I enjoyed reading about their developing romance.
However, this book has more endings than Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Just when you think things are winding up to a HEA moment… we’re off again, another few months down the road, or in another location, or life takes another unexpected twist. There were times when the story started to feel a little stretched trying to accommodate the latest development as the characters were dragged on a little further. It’s nice that it’s not all over and done with – lust, love, marriage, babies – in a week, but I got a little fed up of happy feelings turning into a sigh because it wasn’t quite done yet, or rather the year-long time frame wasn’t quite over.
So it’s not perfect pacing-wise, but the characters are nice enough and the story itself is easy and enjoyable. The medical moments offer some a nice change in pace, but for the most part the book drifts along in an undemanding way. Yes, it’s predictable at times and unlikely to change the world, but sometimes that’s all you want. Want a medical romance set in the Outback with a good Aussie vibe and likeable characters – then give this a go. I wonder if a certain ambulance driver will be up next. I do hope so.
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
Mackenzie knows its time to take a look at her life and make some changes. As she is getting older she has decided that maybe love is not in the cards for her and she wonders if it ever was. She has distance her self from her family long ago, but longs for the family she lost and wonders if its to late to get them back. When she finds herself at a point in her life where she thinks she my finally have an answer to all the questions she's been asking herself lately, life and her past sneaks up on her and she finds the secrets that are hiding there may not be what she wants to find now. Nathan is sick of his family bugging him to settle down. He has not found the one and will not settle down till he does. When he gets news from his sister he wonders if going home and settling down is going to happen a lot sooner then he thought. What I love about this book instead of the author giving you the impression these characters are flawless with little wrong in there life, she has given you imperfect characters with a imperfect love story for you to fall in love with.It truly feels like you are catching up with friends more then reading a book. You are completely drawn into the book and you find yourself turning the pages, getting drawn in and getting lost in them. This book is a good clean fun romance and for once a fresh of breath air, compared to other books that are out right now. I can't really say there is anything in this book I did not like even up to the very last page is has you drawn in and it seemed when there is no more to give or surprise you Ms. Edwards has managed to throw that out the window with a surprise, or a twist. If you are truly looking for a really fun book with imperfect but real characters this is the book for you. Disclosure: I received this book free of charge from the publisher, but this review consists of my honest opinions, not influenced in any way by the author or publisher
I was fortunate enough to be given the chance to preview this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book!! This is my first time reading anything by Nicki Edwards. I appreciated the story from a nurses point of view, being a nurse myself, on hiatus.
Mackenzie seems to be a bit of a depressed gal, with low self-esteem. She meets Nathan at her friend's wedding, who also happens to be the friend's brother. After talking with Nathan and hearing of his experience in a small town in western Austrailia, Mackenzie takes a job as a nurse in a very small hospital, without a doctor on hand most of the time. While there, she runs into Nathan at a grocery store, they make plans for dinner and it's all cute and mushy after that. Mackenzie thinks she isn't good enough for Nathan, being a size 14, brunette, short and doesn't think she's got the looks for a man as good looking as he his. But, Nathan is completely infatuated with her. Her insecurities stem back to her pre-adult years, before leaving home after losing her mother. Her father said some pretty awful things to her, leading her not to return for nearly 20 years. Her father's sudden health crisis has forced her to go back home and it's there and then that her father apologizes and Mackenzie starts to look at her life in a more positive way. This was a very clean heartfelt story and I am looking forward to reading more from this author!!
I believe you should always read different books than you usually do. For me this is different. It is a medical romance. The main character Mackenzie Jones is an intensive care nurse. She is 35 and over the years she has had some problems with her family. Mackenzie would like to settle down in life, like her five younger sisters. The book has an easy to read feel. The hospital dramas that accompany the story help give the book some pace, they are well written. Otherwise the story is boy meets girl and they both fall in love. The book revolves around this relationship and keeps the reader wondering can their problems be resolved and can they have a future together. I think the book is light hearted and good if the reader doesn’t want endless passion. The romance is complimented by the medical aspect, which again does not sensationalise and is tastefully done. Both readers of medical stories and romance stories should be happy. A useful present to anyone who you are not sure what they like to read.
This is her second book in the Escape to the country series. You don't need to read the first one, but I would recommend it.
I absolutely loved this story. At times, you will find yourself laughing, crying and it’s also thought provoking. This is a fantastic Australian rural story. I am looking forward to more of Nicki's work.
Emergency Response is a fun medical romance set in Australia. The characters are likeable and the plot is fast paced. The family situations that Mackenzie deals with are familiar, things we've faced ourselves or know someone who has dealt with similar things. This is the second book in a series and did not disappoint.
I loved this book! I loved the main characters and I loved the setting, it was very exciting to read a book that is set in your town. This is the second book of Nicki Edwards that I have read and I can't wait for the next one!
This was an ok book but I was expecting a little more medical in it. It had romance and some drama but mostly misunderstanding that got resolved in the end. I don't think I will be adding to my read again list.
Love love love - Mckenzie and Nathan's story is how true love stories can happen and what can happen in real life and I loved how Kate and Joel where in there to
Omg absolutely loved this book just as much as Intensive Care. Thank You Nicki for being just an amazing author. Now to read Operation White Christmas.
Mackenzie Jones left her family home when she was a teenager and has worked in a Sydney Hospital. The pressure of working in a city hospital has taken a toll. Mackenzie decides for a change and decides to take a job in a mining town in the Western Australian desert.
Nathan Kennedy has been making good money as a FIFO mine worker in the Pilbara region. Nathan runs into Mackenzie whom is a friend of Nathan's sister, Kate, and can't believe his luck. The two spend a lot of time together until Mackenzie gets a call to say that her father has had a stroke. She returns home without Nathan to visit her father and discusses the issues that made her leave all those years ago with her father right before he passes away.
Nathan hears about the death and goes to the funeral to lend support to Mackenzie, and because she is at loose ends having left her job, she moves to Nathan's home town.
To find out what happens you will need to read for yourself. This is a fabulous book and is well worth the read.
Wow. It's amazing. The story between Kenzie and Nath really shows how a strong bond was formed. I loved how the story showed the highs and lows. Fantastically written Nicki.
