Promises to Keep

Rate this book

For three years, Michael O’Shea has been forced to act as a personal assassin for Livingston Shaw, the cold-blooded puppet master who controls the remote bioweapon implanted in Michael’s back. When Shaw offers to release him if he can recover a kidnapped child, Michael works with every ounce of his being to put the pieces together before all the witnesses are murdered.

Meanwhile, police Inspector Sabrina Vaughn—the woman Michael passionately loves but has been kept from seeing—discovers the body of a little boy that bears a striking resemblance to the missing child. Against all his instincts, Michael must draw Sabrina into his life as one of the world’s most notorious assassins if he’s to overcome the legacy of his bloodthirsty past.

As she has a knack for doing - Maegan Beaumont sucked me into the third installment of her Sabrina Vaughn series straight away and I basically didn't move until I'd devoured it!

All of my favorites characters are back to help - and sometimes hinder - Sabrina and Michael as they again face off against a common enemy. The perfect blend of suspense, mystery, romance and thrilling action came together in Promises to Keep, taking me on an exhilarating ride that had me hanging on to my nerves by a thread!

And that ending - oh boy! I don't want to give anything away but man, I simply could not contain my joy, excitement, torment; my poor overworked heart simply could not take all the feels!!

Maegan Beaumont's smooth and evocative writing is on point, I have been left satisfied and yet I'm so darn hungry for more - I am desperate for more Sabrina and Michael.

I'm emotionally drained but buzzing from the thrill of it - Promises to Keep is a 5 star read.

Easy reading thriller

It is sometimes difficult to pinpoint which ingredients make for a good thriller. Certainly there has to be an interesting plot which develops smoothly. The characters also need to be well formed and three dimensional and finally it is important that the reader becomes involved, is drawn into the story and cares about what happens to the protagonists.

This novel succeeds reasonably well in the first two areas but fails in the third. At no time did I feel any concern as to whether the main characters would succeed or would die painfully at the hands of the bad guys. The recovery of the kidnapped child also felt secondary to the plot as very little is heard about him until towards the end of the book. He was therefore just a name and apparently a device around which to hang an action story.

The constant flashbacks to previous events and times were confusing and irritating. Additionally, it was annoying to constantly wonder how serving police officers could spend so much time following their own agendas without being reported AWOL and that stretched credulity. However perhaps these are minor details. The story romped along and takes the reader with it. By and large the writing is fluid and professional so it’s a good yarn of its type and there are far worse examples on the bookshelves.

Good holiday reading without being spectacular.

There were so many bad guys in this story that you just couldn't keep up with them. Nor could you tell who was working for whom. I think that was the best part about the whole book. Was Michael hired for a good ending or a bad ending? And why was Sabrina brought into all of this? Just exactly who is the puppet master? This book had my flying through the action packed pages trying to figure out who was behind the abduction of children. Sick subject, yes, but unfortunately it does happen.

I highly recommend this book as it was definitely an entertaining thriller. You seriously could not tell who was on who's team. It was pretty wild and engaging.

I want to thank Midnight Ink and Net Galley for providing me with this free e-galley in exchange for an honest review. I'm certainly glad I chose it!

I have not read the first two books in the series, but I followed along pretty well. I wish I had read them, but it was interesting coming in without knowing the backstory. The story is good, though. Michael is an assassin and he's in so deep he knows he can never get out. He wants nothing more than to be with the woman he loves, but he has to stay away from her for her safety. Sabrina is a police officer who can take care of herself. I thought the characters were interesting and the story kept me guessing. A great read with plenty of twists. Kept me turning pages until the very end. Now I'll have to go back and read the first two books.

Just too unbelievable... the characters are not realistic at all to me. I DO like fantasy books - but this is supposed to be a realistic book.
But everyone else seems to really enjoy it - so it must just be "me" :)
If you like characters who face death over and over again - can out maneuver everyone - killing multiple bad guys at a time... then this is the book for you

Another excellent book in series. This is fast becoming one of my favorites. May be a little graphic for some. 4 stars

The story line for this book is interesting. It had so much potential however, I can’t help but give it two starts because in my eyes it fell very short of that. The storyline just kept dragging along and I read one person say that they really didn’t even care about the characters and I felt the same way. Another main reason I didn’t like this book is that it’s very moody. The main characters are very hot then cold... it just gets exhausting. I didn’t even finish it. I got maybe 65% done with it before I just couldn’t take it anymore.

When I first picked up Promises to Keep I didn’t know it was a part of a series. Maybe that’s part of the reason why I didn’t like it. I didn’t have all of the back story.

Awesome

I downloaded this book because i've read the others and I wish this book came before the one before this one but it didn't so it was like going back and coming center again to move forward to wonder where do our characters go from here? I am certainly ready to downloaded the next book and find out!

Loved this book! Loaned the series from the library and they accidentally sent me this instead of the second book in the series. Because of that there was some context I was clueless on, but I still loved reading it. The ending was a perfect and neat bow to the series.

I am not someone who generally enjoys series... but I love this series and I am actually sad that I am now on the last book. It has so many twists and turns that you want to keep reading. New adventure every time you pick it up. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Decisions on Life

The suspense is crazy good! Michael comes to the rescue, will Sabrina be safe? The betrayals, the rescue, the double life and what's next? On to the next book...

I loved the first one, "Carved in Darkness" from 2013 and this one was equally good although this 2015 book says it is #3 and "Sacrificial Muse" from 2014 is #2.

Awesome assassin, Michael O'Shea has been trying his best to keep his secret love, policewoman Sabrina Vaughn, out of his cold-blooded employer's hands and when he finds out that his friend, partner and boss's son, Ben Shaw, handed her over to his sociopath father to be one of his sleeper agents, Michael is really pissed. But when a young boy's body is dumped on her turf, Ben and Michael are sent to find out if it impacts one of their clients. The twists, turns and double crosses are excellently developed and so convoluted and it is far into the book before the pieces start to come together. It kept me guessing all the way to the end as to who Michael and Sabrina could really trust.

There is a lot of violence, gore and body parts here so if you are squeamish, be prepared. Sabrina is definitely not a damsel-in-distress and being unable to keep her safe is driving Michael even more distraught. They both have darkness in them, scars upon their bodies and their pasts were equally gruesome and painful to contemplate, so they really do deserve some happiness; but you have to wonder, with these characters happy there might be no more sequels. So I can go either way on that, I want more, but I want them happy too and it doesn't look like I'm going to get both.

Beaumont lives in Phoenix which is only a short jaunt away from Prescott so maybe I will send her a note (in a totally librarian, not stalker-y way) that says I love these, keep writing them and I will keep reading and recommending them to everyone I know.

4/5 (Very Good)
*I received a copy of this book from Book Chatter Cath in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

Overall, this was a good story. It was thrilling and kept you guessing at every turn. It was one of those stories that left you on the edge of your seat, thinking you knew what was going to happen, when you really had no clue. There were an insane amount of details that the author did a great job of providing, making the story line even more exciting to read and follow. I can’t say that there was a lack of detail or lack of explanation in the story at all.
One complaint I have is that at times it was hard to associate between Michael and Ben as they were talking or as certain things were happening within a scene where they were both present. I found myself having to re-read certain parts because I thought it was one character that was speaking but it was another. This made it hard to read and keep a steady pace going. As this affected my reading of the story, that’s the reason it is a 4 star instead of a 5 star.
I would recommend this story to you to read, absolutely. I’d give yourself a little more time to read the story in case there are parts with the dialogue that confuse you so you can go back and re-read it. It really does make all the difference and makes the story that much better. This author has the ability to write a story that will give you goosebumps and tingles as you read.

Michael is an assassin and his next job is finding a missing child. He has enemies on every side and nobody he can trust. He can't even trust himself. He hasn't been the same since he met Sabrina. When a dead child is found in San Francisco, they will have to work together again. Michael is hoping that they make it out alive.
This is the first book I have read from this author. I found it interesting and fast paced. Every time you turn around there is another enemy. I wish I had read the first two books first. This can be read as a standalone but I think I am missing some keynotes. Interesting story.

High-octane stuff. This book (the third in the series) is about Michael as much as Sabrina and puts a lot of his actions in context as it explains a bit more of his backstory. But this is no due history lesson. The whole story is fraught with danger and tension, offset by little pearls of humour.

Michael and his crew are engaged to rescue the kidnapped grandson of a powerful senator. Somehow Sabrina gets tangled up in this as well because it goes waaaay beyond a simple kidnapping, but rather the whole business is about revenge - the very serious kind. An excellent thriller - 4.5 stars.

LOVED this book! I do think the 1st book Carved in Darkness was the best one so far. I just saw the 4th book is coming out in a few months. Not to sure how to feel about that. I don't know what else could possibly go wrong with the characters in this series. Hopefully, the 4th wont be a big disappointment. I think all 3 of these are great. Likeable characters and a great story. All of them so far have deserved 4 stars.
