Rain Oxford is a teacher who has been writing stories since she was twelve. She attended Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. Some of her interests include magic, psychology, and ancient history. When she’s not creating worlds, she enjoys reading, playing the piano, or photographing exotic wildlife.
I recommend this series to everyone because it is captivating and once you start reading it, it is impossible to stop! The world building is stellar, the characters deep, emotional, and above all realistic. What makes it perfect is how fast I got hooked and how fast I finished the book. Once started, I could not put it down. Once finished though, I wanted more! This is a book that will leave you hungry for other works penned by this author. This was a great read, and I look forward to the next book Rain Oxford puts out.
***Listened to as an audiobook*** *** I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review***
Book 2: Hungry Earth (Elemental #2) I absolutely LOVED this book! And I loved the narrator's voice. It is exactly like what you think Harry Potter & his friends might have to deal with if they had Wizard school in their mid-20's & 30's!
There's danger, intrigue, strong friendships, paranoia, vampires, Wizards, fae, shape shifters, familiars, elements, magic and more! There's a struggle between different magic races, school fights, danger and scary monsters attacking people out of who-knows-where - it's fantastic!!
I highly, highly recommend this series to friends. I haven't read the Dresden series BUT I did watch the tv show - and this makes me think a lot of Dresden.
Book two is just as good as book one. The characters are becoming deeper and more of the world is revealed, including more of the big-picture conflict between different supernatural sects. It's a lot of fun, a little dark, and a little creepy. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next in the series. I've really enjoyed listening to this series, and I'm bummed that only the first two are available on Audible right now. I'll get to the third book in the series eventually, but it would be a heck of a lot faster if it were available on Audible.
The narrator of the audiobook edition ruins what might have been a fairly good book. His ridiculous voice characterizations, accents and mispronunciations were so distracting, I lost track of the plot and minor characters. I couldn't tell you if this was a book worth reading, but I won't be reading any more in this series.
I really love this series. The world building (especially the treatment of magic) is interesting and Devon is a great main character. I'm looking forward to continuing the series and dabbling in the Guardian series....
I listened to the Audible Audiobook. The story was an ok "light read" if you like the paranormal world. Magicians, shape shifters and vampires. I do not feel the main character Devon Sanders, a private investigator and a college student at the age of 30, fit in very well with the other college students, but in the end this is not a deep read. Rain Oxford's writing style contains a lot of dialog as he describes the action and he has a tendency to shift between calling the characters by their first name and their last name - It is annoying. However, the worst part by far is the Narration. Had I read this book I might have given it three stars, but Todd Menesses employs a serious stern voice for all his characters throughout the entire book, even when conveying a humorous passage. Bottom line, I came close to giving up on this story because of the narration several times, and I will not continue with the series. Sorry, not for me.
Very imaginative and entertaining story! Although I own the Audiobook I decided to read the actual book due to the narrator’s exaggerated baritone cadence that reminds me of “This is CNN” just ruins the main character for me BUT yet his accents of the other books characters are very well done?!?
A solid 3.5 stars, this book is sure quite a bit of fun. It might be just one of thousands of books just like it and the characters, the setting, and everything about it are just like in those other books, but still an entertaining and fun diversion. I think I will even get the next book in these series too.
I've read two books in this series. The only reason is that I like the plots and the characters. The writing is maybe high-school level, the editing (if any) is terrible. I'd love to see the author develop a more mature style; I like her imagination.
Really good sequel / follow up to the first book in this series. Definitely going on to book 3 and I hope for a long list of following books after that one. Narrator is EXCELLENT.
