When Keith Skyler, heir to the Lynx alpha, moves with his sister and her son across town to get away from their domineering and bigoted father he never expects that he'll meet his mate. Keith has been fed a lot of misinformation from his father (and tribe) which has him believing a mate is an unattainable dream. Until he meets shy, stuttering, Jason and he knows at first scent he's finally met the one who will complete his soul.
O'Riley creates a very interesting take on the whole paranormal shifters/vampires/humans universe which, for the most part, I enjoyed and, in places, she builds it wonderfully. What I didn't enjoy was about 30% of the story could have been easily cut and would have streamlined the whole flow. I really didn't like that the story is weighed down with the unnecessary duplication of scenes told from a slightly different perspective while there were at least three occasions when there were scenes only mentioned in passing I would have far preferred to read.
I loved the communication between the characters, the camaraderie between Jason and his best friend, Sasha. The sexy times that were on page were really good.
All in all I enjoyed the story and I like that there's enough breadcrumbs left to set up multiple sequels in the universe for other characters (Trace, Vance, Sasha). I definitely wouldn't mind diving back in to read about what happens to them.

Keith is a lynx shifter who suffers under the thumb of his autocratic father, who is also his alpha. In 3 years he will have a chance to stand on his own and challenge him, but for now he must either follow his rules or work around him.
Keith is positive he has no mate, as far as he knows there are no gay shifters, so he’s almost worried when he scents something “mate-like” on the air as he’s moving into his new house. He’s ecstatic to find that it is his mate and his mate is a man!
Jared is a little bit gun-shy in the love department. He’s been burned in the past and has a low self esteem as a result. When he spies his new neighbor moving in next door, he wants to be friendly and introduce himself. He is overwhelmed when he realizes that not only is this hot guy gay, but he’s totally into him!
There are quite a few things these guys have to work through to make it to their HEA. First there’s Keith’s very conservative (and controlling, evil, manipulative) father. There’s the whole “Introducing a human into the world of paranormals” and there is Jared’s resistance to a relationship based on the “mate bond” and his own low self-esteem.
But… love does conquer all and after some fierce fights, some fantastic alliances and some really hot sex… they do get their HEA.

I love shifter romances! The “mine”, that dramatic pull of attraction, the animal-like qualities that get explored, the magic… so much fun and creativity!
This follows a fairly common theme. Meet, mine, how to explain, oh-no not a human, it doesn’t matter, mine, etcetera. I did like the addition of the vampire-friend Sasha. He was fun and loyal and spunky and managed to force these guys into communicating when it looked like they were going to get stuck in the middle of a “Big Misunderstanding”.
The father was super-evil and it was nice that he got beaten down, so that was pretty satisfying. I enjoyed the “uber-skills” Keith ends up having – I love it when authors use the shifter element and actually do something with them as shifters!
I wasn’t super-impressed by anything being new or really unique, but it was a solid, fun, sexy read. I enjoyed it and recommend it to fans of shifter romance.

Craig Beck is PHENOMENAL. He does all the emtion, excitement, smexy times – superbly. He’s absolutely one of my top favorite narrators. I absolutely would choose a book to listen to based on him being the narrator. I know it’s going to be a great story – regardless of the author. He can do women, a variety of accents, kids… He has excellent timing, voice quality and sound quality. All in all. Perfect!

Okay I don't know how many times I say it but I absolutely love it when one of the shifters knows from the start and gets all mine with his new mate. This book you get that and so much more!
I have honestly never read a book with a Lynx shifter and this book was so good.
You get Keith who is a Lynx shifter plus a veterinarian. He is also in line to be the next Alpha of his fathers tribe.
Then you get Jason who owns his own IT business who works from home. When he spots Keith through the window while he is moving in let me say from that point on it was on!
This book had me on the edge of my seat with all the bad people who were determined to break them up. There were also the very sweet moments.. You could definitely feel how much Keith loves Jason and vice versa. Then you find out something about Keith and you are just stunned because I did not see that coming! You also meet a lot of different characters too. You also meet Sasha Jason's best friend, I have to say at first I was unsure about him but by the end of the book I really liked his character.
All together I really loved this book!
I would definitely recommend this book!

This one was a little bit different. There were points in the story that just didn't flow real good for reading, and things jumped a little bit here and there, but overall not a bad read. This story is also set up so that there could be another book as there others that the story could focus around, however with the epilogue, I don't know if the author is planning on another - I would like to read more about Sasha though.

This book is a big NO for me. The synopsis seems decent, but the writing style just does not mesh with me at all. And the characters are so bland and BORING. Basically, I read the first few chapters, where there was complete instalove (along with the "this guy is a stranger to me but we just had the best sex of my life so we are MEANT to be together" trope, which I almost ALWAYS hate, and this book is no exception), said "fuck it," and moved onto another book to read. The end.

I really enjoyed this one. I loved Jason and Keith. I also enjoyed some of their family and friends, I enjoyed the author's take on her shifter world. I really hope this is going to be a series...

I was not overly impressed.
The dialogue was a little fake and some of the transitions were awkward. I did, however, like Keith the lynx shifter. Jason was a little too insecure at first...it took him forever to even believe that Keith liked him.

This is one hot tamale. Wonderful world building, the story flows well and the plot is carefully laid out as the story progresses. Neither man knows what's in store being mated to another man, but they are oh so very happy to figure it, together, as often they can and in as many positions as they can. If you're looking for a well written story that is narrated precisely and perfectly with a whole lot of lovin goin on... step right this way please.

So, let’s start by saying…I’ve read just about every book Tempeste has written. I just love her stories and when this one came about…I knew I had to get in there and read this book. I’m so glad that I did!!
Keith Skylar is the Alpha Heir of his lynx tribe and he is closeted to everyone but his sister. Keith has been raised to believe that there are NO gay shifters, especially lynx shifters. Keith and his sister, Taylor and Taylor’s son, Zeke are moving off the tribe’s land closer to both their jobs and way from their father, Adam. Keith has known he that he was gay since he was young, like 10 years old. Keith held the belief that he would never find a mate as he was gay and shifters couldn’t be gay. Keith is such a strong man and I really liked his character. He was kind, brave, sweet, gentle and had the makings of a really good leader. Imagine his surprise when he moves into his new house and senses his mate.
Jason Grant is this cute geeky guy who has had some relationship issues in the past. He feels like he’s not good enough and that people will cheat on him. So, you can see how Jason would be a bit gun shy when it comes to relationships. Jason has some self esteem issues that come from prior relationships and even then…he comes through. It took him a bit, but Jason came out the other side. . I like that he’s so damn sweet and gentle. I like how even when faced with so many new things, like finding out that there are shifters, vampires, etc…that overall, he handled it ok.
Now, the secondary characters in this book…I really liked them. Taylor and Zeke, Keith’s real family. I loved how Taylor loves her older brother and wants him to be happy and safe, as their dad is a gigantic dillhole!!! Chad, Vance and Kelley are Keith’s friends and those whom he trusts more than anyone to protect his family. Adam…there was really nothing nice to say about this man. He’s just an Asshole and treats not only his kids, but his entire tribe like shit!! I’m surprised that there were people that even liked him. He’s just such an jackhole and every time he was on my kindle…I just wanted to choke him til his eyes bulged. But that is just my personal opinion. Sasha…I LOVED Sasha!! Sasha has been friends with Jason for years and truly loves him. I liked the way that Jason leans on Sasha and how Sasha is always there for him. Sasha is cute and funny and really…he’s a hoot!!! I just loved listening to him banter with everyone.
Now, it you’ve read Tempeste’s books before, you know that she writes some really AMAZING sexy times and this book is no different. I will say that what I’ve always liked about Tempeste’s work is that it’s never PWP, it always is there to move the story along. It’s to show how these characters meet and to let their attraction/lust show and then to show them bonding. I really enjoy a story where the sexy times helps to move along the story and really shows the affection of the characters.
I like that Tempeste’s stories ALWAYS has these wonderful characters and even the bad guys are pretty well developed. I like that her characters aren’t these perfect specimens of manhood. I like that they are REAL and have real problems. I fell into this story and didn’t put it down until the very end. Yuppers, that’s right…ONE SITTING!! It was that Damn Good!!

Story Review:
Despite the narration (see below) I was entertained by Whiskers of a Chance. I love kitty shifters and Lynx are ones I haven’t read about before.
The world was interesting and I quite enjoyed the characters that inhabited it. Brandilyn said most of how I felt. Read her review here.
I would happily read more if this became a series, just not with this narrator.
Narration Review:
The narrator had a pleasant enough voice, however, just as books set in England should be narrated with an English accent, books set in America should be read with an American accent. This was not the case with this book. I didn’t even realize it was set in the states until I double checked the blurb and they finally said so in the narrative. It was very disconcerting.
As well, although the narrator attempted to have different voices, they weren’t distinct enough and some dialog was hard to follow as I didn’t know who was speaking. He also didn’t do a good job of following dialog tags as a character squealing or muttering sounded the same as all the other speech. His attempt at a Russian accent sounded like a deep Scottish one at times and didn’t add anything to the character that giggled and squealed.
On the whole, I did not like this narration at all and if I wasn’t enjoying the story, would have DNF’d it.

Whiskers of a Chance by Tempeste O'Riley

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
I really enjoy O'Riley stories. This was no different. There was a lot going on in this story. From the budding relationship, to the development of a tribe that won't allow intolerance.
I love how Jason and Keith have to communicate constantly. I think they have a great relationship because Keith has to talk Jason in to being with him - to convince him that the "mate" issue still allows for choice. There are insecurities, mainly on Jason's part, which I found to be quite redundant.
Then you have Sasha - who I LOVED. I really hope he gets his own story. His fierce dedication to Jason and anyone associated with Jason is admirable. I love how he was able to shed light on the mate situation, give Jason a reality check on whether or not Jason truly loved Keith and how Sasha was able to divulge the true nature of vampires.
Then you have Keith's family - both blood and chosen. The secondary characters in this story were great. They added depth to both Keith and the story.
I do wish that O'Riley hadn't shown several scenes twice, but from slightly different view points. It seemed to drag on because we had just read the scene and here we were reading it again. However, I didn't necessarily think that it detracted, just made the story feel like there was filler.

Then you have Sasha - who I LOVED. I really hope he gets his own story. His fierce dedication to Jason and anyone associated with Jason is admirable. I love how he was able to shed light on the mate situation, give Jason a reality check on whether or not Jason truly loved Keith and how Sasha was able to divulge the true nature of vampires.
Then you have Keith's family - both blood and chosen. The secondary characters in this story were great. They added depth to both Keith and the story.
I do wish that O'Riley hadn't shown several scenes twice, but from slightly different view points. It seemed to drag on because we had just read the scene and here we were reading it again. However, I didn't necessarily think that it detracted, just made the story feel like there was filler.

This book was not what I expected. Not quite sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing. For some reason, I thought Grant was going to be more Alpha than Keith, but it wasn't so. Keith is the shifter and Grant is human, btw. Maybe I assumed that because even though Grant was human, Keith was the lynx shifter and for some reason in my mind, Keith would be the gentle one. lol I don't know, just not what I was expecting.
This was actually a sweet romance, not fabulous, but a good enough read. Grant was a stuttering mess, but he was adorkable. Keith was charming and he really into Grant. Glad he wasn't the kind of guy who'd abandon his mate just cause his father was all over his case and that Grant was human. There were plot holes here and there, but a good read for a rainy day.
I also like the cover and title. Cute title and cover for a cute story. :)

Vampires and shifter oh my! I enjoyed this book. It was well written and I really enjoyed the character development. I loved Keith and Jason and felt an immediate connection with Jason. I think I fell in love with Jason when he first began to stutter when he became nervous. It took me a little longer to warm up to Keith but after that I couldn’t wait to see were the author would take us with this story.
However, there did seem to be a lot of things missing from the story. There were times the story would just jump to something that was unrelated to what was going on. Overall an enjoyable read and can’t wait for the next installment.

This book was great! I loved the fun take on the vampire/shifter relationship. Plus, the fact that it was a Lynx shifter instead of the normal shifters was nice.
I loved the way Jason treated the shifted side of Keith, although I would've liked to see more of the interactions with the lynx/human dynamic.
There was some drama having to do with Keith's father, not just because he was gay, but because of the fact that he wasn't going to let his father do as he wished any longer, especially when it came to his mate.
Jason was sweet with his stutter and seeing him grow more confident in himself as the story progressed was a nice touch.
Overall a really great, sweet story.

I hope Whiskers of a Chance is the first in paranormal romance series by Tempeste O'Riley. Throughout this story, she created a world that I want to revisit, and she introduced characters who need their happily ever afters. While the story focused mainly on Keith and Jason, the cast of characters charmed their way into my heart, especially Sasha. We can't forget, however, all of Keiths friends and new inner circle.

Shifters and vampires and computer nerds, oh my. What's not to like. (Except the fact the nerd and the lynx-shifter met over a broccoli and cheese casserole--yuck--I hate broccoli) End of book left set up for the saga to continue with a vampire/shifter m/m romance....sigh. One can only hope.
****Enjoyed my second reading of this story; it was good to get a refresher course on all the players---human, shifter, and vampire. Moving right along to book 2 in the series.

I enjoyed this but in some ways not as much as I hoped. The story would hook me, but then go through a lull or a jump that would lose my interest for a bit, leaving me just picking along until it grabbed me again. I felt distanced from the characters and wished for a just a bit more connection.
Everything starts off fast, with Keith moving away from his overbearing alpha father to try to find some freedom in his life. He moves next door to Jason and is immediately attracted to the man. When Jason comes over with a 'welcome to the neighborhood' casserole, Keith realizes Jason is his mate and acts on it. Then we get angst hitting pretty hard; Jason is human and can't feel the mating pull. Also, since Jason is a human male, Keith knows his father and his tribe will not accept him as his mate. But Keith wants to give things a try and starts dating Jason.
Some of the things the characters did would just irk me as the book went along. Jason learns pretty quickly that Keith is a lynx shifter and his big concern? That he wasn't told sooner. He gets angry that Keith and his best friend Sasha have been lying about their paranormal lives. Yet, if Jason knows about the paranormal, he knows that they can't just up and tell him because it is forbidden in their world. So why is he so worked up? Then he gets concerned about the mating bond and pushes away from Keith rather than talking. Eventually talking is what helps things out, which only aggravated me further because couldn't you have done that in the first place dammit! Okay, apparently I was a bit more annoyed than I thought. Keith and Jason each had their respective drama fits that dragged at the story rather than enhancing it, which really disappointed me.
The book jumped at times, moving from one things to another at a mere mention. Sometimes it made sense, after all we don't need to know every little detail of every minute. Other times it felt like O'Riley was skipping over important potential areas for story that left me wanting more.
The relationship has plenty of potential and working it out in the paranormal world was interesting. I enjoyed finding out more about the world as a whole and the oddities of Keith's pack as he gets more exposure. Keith and Jason worked well together and often tried to make certain they were being open and equal with each other. These parts of the book hooked me, but I felt they didn't really come together until the end third of the book. As everything was finally building up the ending came and felt completely anticlimactic as the built up tension was never put to use and then fascinating paranormal things were left completely unexplored. There were interesting points but I wish the story has been better at cohesively keeping my interest and building up to a better ending.

I received a free copy of this audiobook to listen to and review for Wicked Reads.
Having only read one of O’Riley’s short stories prior to this, I count Whiskers of a Chance to be the first full-length novel of the author’s I’ve consumed (as read isn’t the correct term). That’s because my previous experience was a mere taste of the author’s writing, whereas this gave me the opportunity to fall into the world she created – and what a world it was. I must confess that I listened to Whiskers of a Chance completely out of order of my review schedule because the audiobook sample was a steamy scene that was made even sexier by Beck’s beautiful accent. It’s true that Beck’s narration was a big reason as to why I chose the audiobook, but O’Riley’s storytelling made this an extremely enjoyable tale that I cannot wait to listen to again.
I do believe this is the first book I’ve ever read featuring a lynx shifter, so it was nice how information about the animal was peppered throughout as Keith taught Jason about his cat, his tribe, and what the future would mean for them if Jason accepted Keith as his mate. But I’m getting ahead of myself a bit here, kind of. The book opens with Keith telling his father that he and his sister, Taylor, have purchased a house, closer to their jobs, and will be leaving tribe land. To say that daddy dearest was an unhappy alpha would be an understatement. Then again, scowling, grumpy, and controlling seems to be their father’s default setting, and it makes it easy for the reader to understand why the Skyler siblings are ready to be off pack land. What makes the move even more interesting is that Keith scented his mate in their new neighborhood, which both excites him because he never thought he’d find his mate, and terrifies him because he was raised being told that matings are always between a male and a female, so as a homosexual, he has no interest in finding his mate as he cannot envision fulfilling his duty as an alpha to produce an heir. Quite the quandary for Keith. Fortunately for him, Baast has bigger things planned for him and his mate, and their circle of friends, which grows significantly throughout the book.
I would apologize for my vagueness, except that there is so much that occurs in the novel that I don’t want to reveal because I don’t want to ruin the experience for others. O’Riley has created a fascinating world with the lynx shifters and the manner in which she weaves other supernatural beings into Keith and Jason’s world made Whiskers of a Chance an extremely enjoyable book. Although there isn’t a big rehash of Jason’s past, it’s clear from his insecurities and behaviors that he’s had more than one bad boyfriend experience. Watching Keith balance the courtship of his mate with hiding his mate’s existence from his father, all while trying to create a “safe” home for his sister and nephew was very entertaining – and that’s without even considering the steamy scenes. Yowser! But the combination of O’Riley’s story and Beck’s narrative talents made Whiskers of a Chance a truly lovely audiobook that I look forward to listening to again and again.

Worlds change for Jason when his new neighbour moves in. Keith ignites something Jason never imagined he'd have. Keith bought the house to escape from his controlling father. Keith is the heir to the Glacier Rim Tribe of lynx shifters in Seattle. He and his sister want out from under their father's control. Keith never expected that he would find a mate. He's been raised to believe that gay shifters never found mates, so when Jason's scent hits him he’s floored. Not only is Jason a man he's also human. Getting their happy ending takes a lot of effort and some convincing. Jason is at least open to shifters but being a fated mate takes some time. An excellent introduction to the series.

Shifters MM novels are almost all the same and have almost all the same clues and rules. This one had some interesting new issues and could be a very pleasant reading but at a certain point it became repetitive and kind of boring. So, just 3 stars. But it has potential. And look forward to reading the second episode.

****Audio Version**** This a horrible audio I couldn’t make it past 45% this is an absolute DNF. I am giving it one star bc maybe this would be a little bit to read. On that note the narrator was awful, terrible! I’m going to go listen to an audio with a good fave narrator to help my poor ears from such an awful narrator.

Interesting take on a different shifter/paranormal culture. Dragged a bit in places and you could definitely tell where the story was going. Would have liked more characterizations that didn't feel all the same.
