Chase Reston finally has his life together. He has an NBA career, a house on the beach and a great relationship with his model girlfriend Jamie. Then overnight, a gambling scandal destroys it all. Determined to protect those he loves from being implicated, Chase decides to cut himself off from them until his name is cleared. He embarks on a career saving strategy---playing basketball overseas, and dating a sexy actress to raise his profile. His new life also results in an unexpected benefit: finding love and friendship in the most unexpected places. Meanwhile, a devastated Jamie, seeing only that Chase has coldly and quickly moved on, finds herself falling in love with the heir to a powerful political family. Adam is Jamie's perfect match and talk of an engagement quickly develops. Will Chase regain his reputation in time to explain everything to Jamie? Or will they decide that their relationship is a first love that has run its course?
This was a nice, refreshing read for a Sunday. I love a smart, sexy story and this one had everything I like: mystery, lots of steam and heavy drama! 'Without Chase' hooks you from the very beginning when Chase gets called in to meet with the head honchos of his NBA team. When he said he needed to call his lawyer before he could answer any additional questions, I knew that this was going to be a good one! The tension between Chase and his girlfriend Jamie in the beginning set the stage for some great relationship conflict scenes (can't we all use one more of those to analyze as we get through this thing called life?) in the rest of the novel, giving the story even more layers of complexity than I expected. Just awesome!
I'm so glad I stumbled upon Jo Frances's work. A definite new addition to my roster of authors to keep an eye on.
Without Chase is written in a style that has more in common with contemporary Literature, than traditional romance. The premise goes beyond a simple boy-loses-girl and the build up to the reconcilliation. Instead, the story shows how the main characters are motivated by all the other things besides love (acceptance, ambition, redemption) and how those things affect their relationships.
I loved the characters in the first book and wanted to find out what happens. But this sequel was disappointing for 2 reasons.
****Warning possible spoilers****
In the first book the characters and their thoughts felt realistic. Although their situations were not clearly (becoming a fashion model overnight or a nba player). But this book first of all had a situation that led to the characters being apart for most of the book - and the reason seemed absurd. That the hero would not be able to communicate to the heroine ever why he had to break up with her is hard to believe. Second, the fact that chase was willingly and jubilantly unfaithful throughout, described in great detail by the way in the book, despite the fact that in his mind he always thought they'd get back together, while Jamie was faithful, reminds me of the old harlequins where the woman was always a virgin while the man was always the opposite. I was really weirded out by how much he enjoyed being with other women and how graphically this was described while he expected Jamie to just wait for him and get back together once he'd sorted it all out. I am not sure how him having sex with other women was supposed to rehabilitate his image. And I definitely did not believe that he would stay faithful to Jamie, or that he really had the same feelings for her that he did in the first book. On the other hand she could not stop thinking about him and while she had a boyfriend, he was celibate (!) Very one sided romance.
I really enjoyed this novel. Chase has had a hard upbringing with a mother who wasn't perfect by any means. He finally has everything that he ever wanted and a very strong love with Jamie. Suddenly overnight, it is all taken away. A scandal rocks Chase's life and he is forced to give up what means the most to him. He tries to restart his life and dates a different woman to restart his profile. Jamie also dates another man who is an heir. Things are just not the same for her and she starts to miss Chase. I liked the ending of the book because it was unexpected. It really took me by surprise and I was happy that it wasn't just a typical romance book.
Without Chase is a contemporary romance featuring sexy NBA player, Chase Reston, and his love story with beautiful Jamie Cameron. Chase is unexpectedly torn away the life he enjoys with Jamie when a scandal erupts. His need to protect her from the scandal leads him into a life he never intended while Jamie is left devastated and confused.
I liked that the author convincingly described the points of views of each of the characters. Though I found myself frustrated with Chase at times, I believe that he was doing what he thought was right. Jamie's journey from heartache to healing is equally compelling.
If you love a story in which love does not come easily, this is a fun read for you
I received a copy in return for an honest review. This book was an easy quick read, I finished it in about two days. I enjoyed seeing the story from both points of view. The story begins quickly and continues to grow without becoming boring. I might have rolled my eyes at a few things, but overall a good read.
This book was the best in the series so far. The characters (Jamie and Chase) are from the first book, which I like and the story hooks you quickly with the scandal unfolding from Chapter One. The author spins a great story with characters you can't help but fall in love with.
