12:07 The Sleeping is a psychological horror novel, based on personal experience of Sleep Paralysis. This was my first L Sydney Abel book. Horrors are not my usual genre but I have an open mind and like to venture out of my box on occasion.

This book offers a whole new meaning to “sleep paralysis” and his explanation for it. It is a terrifying concept…unable to move…being held down, and you can do nothing. You are aware of your atmosphere but you can make no movement or response. Scary feeling and definitely frightening.

“This book contains moments of a sexual nature, religious associations and paranormal happenings. Don’t read it if you are easily offended. This work of fiction has very real persons’ lives entwined within it. Don’t expect spooky – Sleep paralysis isn’t in any way spooky. It’s frightening and sometimes, more often than not, terrifying. And I should know – I suffer from it.”

This is the story of Lance, a schizophrenic character who suffers nightmares that are very real to him. Lance is afraid of “falling asleep” and The Sleeping coming for him. And it's always happens at 12:07 as shown on his bedside digital clock. There is always the fight between good and evil.

I must say that I liked the concept of the plot but found it difficult to follow and the characters very strange. I would recommend this story to fans of thrillers/horrors. Thank you to L Sydney Abel for the copy.

Great book. The Sleeping are horrendous. Best way to find out why, read the book. I don’t do spoilers just hints and seriously do not wanna see that time on my clock if I wake up!
Creepy and dark. An unusual way to send the story which I thought was great.
A very good horror

12:07 The Sleeping is basically a horror novel though there are moments of erotica as well.

Lance has always suffered nightmares since the age of 5, he doesn't know why he does, he just does. He plods along in his moderately dull life along with his wife Katherine. His only highlights of his day is when he is at his office and his secretary, Imogen, bends over to do the filing. When Lance happens by chance to start talking to his elderly neighbour Mr Green, the reasoning behind his nightmares soon becomes apparent.

Lance is actually quite a weak man and to be honest I felt quite sorry for his wife Katherine. Overall though I can't say I was drawn to any of the characters as none of them were overly likeable. They all have their own baggage that they have to carry but to a certain extent a lot of that is down to their own actions.

I did find the whole Sleepers bit very interesting. It has a certain biblical feel to it with good versus evil, God and Satan etc. It is very much a story of having faith and putting your trust in to strangers.

12:07 The Sleeping is an enjoyable read, it isn't one of the scariest books I've ever read but it is still good none the less.

I received a kindle version of this novel by the author in return of an honest review so here it is!

The story features a very fascinating character called James, who is described in great detail by the author which adds depth to the story and makes the character a lot more realistic. The other element of the novel is 'The Sleeping', these are guardians of the underworld who feed in the souls that have been sent there.
I found that the story drew me in straight away and I found myself reading it every spare second I had. It keeps you coming back to it and wanting to read more, find out what happens and also find out more about the characters. It is very well written and flows throughout the novel, which means I didn't find a dull part to read! I would recommend this story to fans of thrillers/horrors. The author is extremely talented and destined for big things!

I have never read anything by this author before and found that I do like them, though this book could have been a little shorter. While I appreciate the attention to detail from character development to the nuance of the plot, it could have been toned down to make the thriller aspects a bit more thrilling. The supernatural was well represented as was the religious aspects but I never felt any true sense of urgency while reading. That's not to say that I did not enjoy it because I did, it just never fully engulfed me.

The Sleeping collect the Unwanted, a child not created/born from want. They are the guardians of the underworld who feed on tormented souls. When they enter our world they are the ones who haunt those they believe belong in Hell. The Sleeping are relentless and employ whatever means are needed to obtain the souls of those they have laid claim to.

James has seen The Sleeping since he was five years old and has been fighting them since that time. They continue coming for him and he hides as best he can from them, but the things he does keep him firmly on their radar.

No real action to speak of, not scary, just not. As I have said it has a decent story with some characters that will make you hate them or love them but you will feel something about them. I just wish there had been more going on besides all the explaining about what this is and what that is. But someone will enjoy it.

I liked the idea of this book. However I found it confusing at times. Some of the characters didn't make sense in my opinion. I also found it difficult to get into and like some of the characters. I did however finish the book which was ok but just not to my liking.

12:07 The Sleeping
By: L. Sydney Abel
5 out of 5 stars

The story 12:07 The Sleeping by L. Sydney Abel is an occult/horror book. This is one of the most unique and interesting story I have read in a long time. It tells the story of James and his fight against an enemy called “The Sleeping.” They always come at the same time, however not every night. Terror is what they bring. Join James on a journey of self-discovery and find out if he can hold back the hordes of evil that are trying to capture him.

Once I read the last page of this story I had to step back and say “WoW!” The storyline starts off with a bang and doesn’t let up until the final page. Strange creatures are everywhere and those that would help the man who is known as “The Unwanted” all are being gathered together. I love the horror genre and I can’t say I have read another book quite like this. I love the accounts given in the story that explain what is happening, it is detailed and easy to follow. The book smoothly flows from one scene to another and I found myself at the end very quickly. Grab this book to take a walk into a world that you will remember long after you finish reading. This book does have scenes that some may find disturbing and would recommend for a mature audience only. I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.

I have to admit that it took me a few starts to get into 12:07., I think because I was reading it before bedtime!!
If you already have trouble sleeping then read it in the morning.
A strange book about souls that shouldn't have been given, creatures that want the souls back and come to get it whilst you're sleeping.
If you enjoy the paranormal then give this a read.

to start with I would not recommend reading this at night or before you go to sleep as it is definitely aa horror book akin to Stephen King of old. the story follows a man called James/lance who had a hard upbringing and an even harder adulthood. the story follows James after his wife has had a miscarriage and when he meets Mr Green who helps the sleeping. the sorry flowed really well and the characters developed nicely throughout the story. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Stephen King and James Herbert books.

This was my first L Sydney Abel book. Horrors are not my usual genre but I have read one or two Stephen King novels and this book reminded me of those books. The characters were strange but I liked the way in which Katherine wanted to do anything to protect her husband. This story was surreal to me but definitely a book that I will revisit at a later stage.
This book is also about how the author experiences sleep paralysis and his explanation for it, something that I do not know anything about.
Thank you to L Sydney Abel and TBConFB for the copy.

Is this real life, or is it just fantasy? The Sleeping 12:07 is the point at which the two realms cross-over to create the stuff of nightmares.

It’s a play on psychological fantasy with an element of terror, incorporating a certain character regularly bending over at a filing cabinet in a highly suggestive manner. There’s also the deep and meaningful question of God vs Satan throughout, with a surreal battle of paranormal rivalry on the cards.

The characters include an elderly, sardonic soulless man who just keeps coming back, a enigmatic nun with more than a few odd habits (excuse the pun), two ladies, who I can’t recall whether they were ever fully clothed during the entire episode, then there’s Lance, Mr Night-Terror himself, enjoying himself quite regularly outside bouts of trippy torment. He’s aided by his poor, long suffering wife, who seems to have acquired a firearm during her role in this story. If I were her, I’d have used it to good effect on my cheating husband’s alter ego (James) long before I’d been dragged into his very own personal hell.

Anyway, the thread of it is: this unfortunate chap called Lance Lewisham, despite practicing psychiatry and trying to help other people with their ordeals, is finding he’s got major issues of his own. He’s been waking in a sweat at 12:07 a.m. after being visited by something terrifying called The Sleeping. He’s felt their presence since childhood, namely recalling an early visit by the mysterious Mr Green, who creepily has just moved next door to him and his wife.

Still with me? Good!

It appears that Mr Green’s role is primarily one of mediator between lance and The Sleeping because baby Lance was unwanted and subsequently given away. One of the roles of The Sleeping is to claim ‘the unwanted’. But Lance mustn’t give in no matter how bleak life seems, or he won’t be long for this world. A spectacular meeting of good vs very, very bad will aim to release him from his miserable existence one way or another.

In principle the story was intriguing and I was curious to know how it all panned out. It involved a continual build-up to a crescendo of a finale. To get to that point, however, I found I was trawling through moments of erotic content that would occur at any given moment. While content of that nature is usually attributed to stories of this genre, personally I’d have liked to have seen the disturbing horror element being expanded upon much, much more.

All-in-all I’m honoured to have been given the opportunity by the author to read his work and I can appreciate the incredibly hard toil that was clearly poured into writing it, particularly as he has suffered from episodes of sleep paralysis himself – all credit to him for having the courage to write this book, as that itself takes some guts.

While it wasn’t quite as horrific as the cover had suggested, if you’re an fan of the ‘strange and unusual’ then it’s certainly worth a look.

(My thank to the author for generously providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

HOLY HELL! This was creeeeeeeepy!

JAMES

...James has trouble sleeping, every time he falls asleep, he gets a visit from The Sleeping. It seems that he will never again get a good night's rest...
He's in trouble...
The Sleeping want him but he doesn't know why...

Is someone coming up my stairs?

The door handle to his bedroom turned, hardly making any sound...
He wished and wished for his limbs to move, but they didn't...
James felt defeated, he was dying in his own claustrophobia...

LANCE

Coldness overcomes Lance, he can't seem to move. Terror awakens all of his senses. He calls out to his wife, Katherine. No answer. There's a presence in the room...Shuffling noises like the dragging of feet on the floorboards...

Lance and James have one thing in common. The Sleeping want them both.

The question is WHY....

Great title & cover.
Brilliant novel, well-developed characters.
Loads of "what the hell just happened" moments! This one will keep you awake!

I highly recommend this for all horror readers!

This is my first novel by L. Sydney Abel and not the last.

Left confused

Working in a school you teach the children that a story consists of 5 parts. INTRODUCTION; this story started well the characters seemed likable. BUILD-UP; I soon got my head around the connections between the characters and their different roles. DILEMMA; the story gathered pace more things were falling into place. RESOLUTION; you are rooting for the characters ,there WILL be a happy ending. CONCLUSION; will Katherine find Lance? Will the Sleeping get what they came for ? This is where the story end . No answers only more questions. Will there be a sequel I don't know. The ending left me frustrated .

I have looked forward to reading this book for a while as I generally enjoy the horror/thriller genre. Overall I thought that the book was ok, but found the plot a little confusing and hard to follow. I didn’t particularly like the characters and for me this is quite an important factor to enjoying a book. This book did however give a good insight into sleep paralysis, which I found quite interesting as I had no prior knowledge of this subject.

12:07 The Sleeping is truly horrifying. Lawrence Abel has created a story that will not let you down. The Sleeping are coming for Lance. They are terrorizing his sleep. They have been trying to claim him since he was a child. What are the Sleeping and why do they want him. Mr Green, the old man next door, claims he has the answers and can help. Will Lance find a way to escape The Sleeping or will he finally lose the battle and forfeit his very soul. This is a fast paced rollcoaster ride from beginning to end. It has all the elements of a my favorite horror. A supernatural thriller with a religious twist. If you are looking for a great read pick this book up, you won't regret it.

Fantastic read

Very realistic for a supernatural story. I had great sympathy for both Lance and Mr Green so wasn't sure how they could both win the fight. Yet somehow they did. Fantastic storyline and very relatable characters. Looking forward to reading more from this author

For some life is unfair and secrets can become deadly! James Walker was an unwanted child passed around until a kindly nun took great care in placing him with a loving family. Lance suffered from nightmares since the age of five. Katherine, Lance’s wife, suffers in near silence over her fear of his cheating and the loss of their first child who was stillborn. Mr. Green longs for release and return of his soul. Their lives are intertwined in deadly and secretive ways leaving everyone’s soul in jeopardy because The Sleeping wants souls, pain and suffering.

James suffers from sleep paralysis in which he is unable to move upon waking from a deep sleep. He knows The Sleeping are coming for him, he feels them crawling up his body as he lays there helpless.

"He tried hard to turn and face his intruder. Sweat began to cover his body, as the corner of the bed sank when something sat down. He wished and wished for his limbs to move, but they didn’t. It was in those moments that all became still. Nothing could be heard apart from his own rapid breathing, which was loud enough to wake the dead. …and whatever moved was now rested on top of him, lifelessly heavy.”

Lance only suffered from nightmares until … “There were others too; all lost in the darkness, crying, screaming and shouting. The writhing sound was held together by nightmare memories … something was now towering over him. The assailing figure lowered itself on top of him; he felt he was being submerged into death.”

The connections of these people must bring about a catalytic event to bring an end to everyone’s suffering to an end thus a ritual must take place with The Unwanted; The Protector; The Custodian, The Messenger/The Key and two Pretty Things. Faith and Trust is what everyone must have, but will it be enough to free everyone from the growing darkness and evilness of The Sleeping?

L. Sydney Abel has taken something that is already frightening – sleep paralysis and turns it into something darker and more frightening! A syndrome that a good deal of the earth’s population suffers from usually briefly but can be brushed away once the paralysis is gone. Abel plants seeds and encourages their growth until closing one’s eyes for sleep can be terrifying as the fear continues to nurture within.

Abel uses vivid imagery to describe The Sleeping: “There were about him like a thick fog – they were the walls, the ceiling, and the floor.” His use of imagery projects how terrifying and immobilizing this condition can be when described in this manner.

Abel connects all the dots of a well-planned story line leaving readers gasping at some twists and turns. His characters are well-developed and strategic as is the dialog.

At the end of a book, one must decide whether or not the book met its potential – depending on the genre – was it romantic enough or funny enough or in this case scary enough. Abel successfully took an occurrence that anyone can experience and turned it into a horrifying blood draining terror!

Was 12:07 The Sleeping scary? OMG YES!

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a book that is terrifying well past the end of the book.

WordsAPlenty gives this book a well-deserved 5 star rating.

Mr. Lance Lewisham (gender psychiatrist) & Mrs. Katherine Lewisham (25+)
both had their respective job.
Ms. Imogen Swan was Lance’s receptionist.

Katherine had a tough time of her delivery & Claire Lewisham (Lance/Katherine’s daughter) was stillborn.
She then engulfed her self in her job.
James Walker had an appointment with Lance.
He suffered from insomnia.
Ms. Drummond was next.
Imogen Swan & Stephanie “Stef” Duke were flatmates.

Mr. Green (neighbor, messenger/key) came to visit Katherine.
Mr. Micheal Green (154, Miriam’s Great grandfather) explained to Lance about The Sleeping (guardians of the underworld).
Margeret Walker had 2 children but she was having extramarital affairs.
James Walker (aka The Unwanted) was her baby son.
Margeret gave it to Sister Miriam Drake (Sisters of the Hope Convent).
The Room of Truth is below the St. Thomas Church.
Sister Miriam is the custodian of sins.
Who was Perry Parkinson (aka Pee Wee) killed by?

Sister Miriam Drake had to make 6 sacrements:
Miriam Drake, The Custodian;
Ambrose Green, The Messenger;
Lance Lewinham, The Key;
Katherine Lewinham, The Protector;
The Pretty Things, Imogen Swan;
The Pretty Things, Stephanie “Stef” Duke (fashion designer).
Katherine Lewinham had invited Stephanie Duke & Sylvie Verlaine to Black Mass.
The Reason (?)

Warning: This book contains extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive to some readers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A failry well written paranormal/horror (historical fiction, erotic) book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great Paranormal/Horror movie, animated cartoon, or better yet a mini TV series. Kind of kinky erotic also. I truly hate to say it but I’m not real sure I understood the whole story content. I did research this subject matter; fascinating. I changed my mind I will rate it at 4 stars.

Thank you for the free Goodreads; Making Connections; Author; Speaking Volumes LLC; PDF book.

This book was a decent read and filled a few hours on a Saturday. I can imagine sleep paralysis is terrifying and I'm glad it's not something I suffer from. The description of these occurrences was very suffocating. There was a little too much description in parts and I didn't gel with any character in particular.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks.

Imagine falling asleep and being consumed by the most vivid nightmares. You feel a presence that you can't see yet you know it is there, and it is an ominous one. They're out to get you, and you're powerless to stop it.

Night after night, Lance is haunted. In fear of sleep, he'd rather force himself to stay awake than face the stuff of his nightmares. When an old man comes calling, Mr. Green, with an explanation for his nightmares he initially refuses to believe him. A man who claims to be over 100 years old and unable to die?! Who would?!

However, as the nightmares become more vivid Lance finds himself willing to listen to any kind of explanation, and as Mr. Green's story unravels he finds himself accepting what the old man has to say, and more importantly what he has to do to make it stop.

I'm not going to give too much away as it would be very easy just to write down the whole plot of the novel, and people like to read things for themselves. In my personal opinion, the story had some interesting twists with vivid accounts of sleep paralysis taken from the author's own experience. The mix of different characters and the way they all played their roles was interesting when it came to the penultimate scene, as the events leading upto it made you doubt whether they could all truly do what was asked of them.

In terms of the horror element, well, to be honest, I didn't find it that scary. Having said that there aren't many horror books that truly terrify me. In fact, at the moment I can only think of one horror book that has really terrified me and it's out of print! However, that doesn't mean that others are going to have the same experience, the premise has a lot of potential and promise and for other readers it may have the desired effect, just not this reader.

Worth a read if you want a book with an interesting mix of characters and the stuff of nightmares gives you nightmares!

This is a story that has evolved from the author’s real experience of Sleep Paralysis. The Sleeping are guardians of the underworld who come for the Unwanted and enter this world through a soulless incarnation.
I have previously enjoyed books by this author, but I can’t say I liked this one. Maybe it was the genre, I’m not a real horror fan, maybe it touched on a lot of my personal dislikes; a weirdly kind of ‘Christian’ theme (words like ‘Amen’, good/evil, devil, nuns etc), vomit, lecherous, boring men and stupid women who find that appealing, bland lesbian sex from a stereotypical male viewpoint and two-dimensional characters. The story takes place in a dreamlike/nightmarish atmosphere but I found the lack of reference to time and space confusing. The narrative seemed disjointed and I found it hard to follow at times. I didn’t like any of the protagonists and therefore failed to get involved with them on any meaningful level. I couldn’t empathise with any of the characters because I didn’t like them and I often didn’t understand why they did what they did.
I can imagine this might be better as a film and could appeal to those who enjoy horror with a supernatural, good versus evil, surreal twist.

In 12:07 The Sleeping by L. Sydney Abel, Lance has a perfectly normal life. Both he and his wife have good jobs and despite the fact that they had lost a baby years earlier, they were still relatively happy. Lance goes to work each day, eyes up his beautiful secretary but does not touch and returns home each night to his wife Katherine.

The only thing that causes him problems are the nightmares he had been having since he was a child.
In enters Mr Green, the man without a soul. He tells Lance that Lance was one of the ‘Unwanted’ and that these nightmares are real. They are ‘the sleeping’ and they are coming for Lance's soul.
It is hard for Lance to believe until strange things start happening.
I really enjoyed the book and it kept me turning page after page to see what could happen next.

12:07 The Sleeping draws on the author’s own experience of sleep paralysis, a terrifying condition in itself, and against this background a horror story unfolds in which the main character’s very soul is at risk. It builds to a terrifying climax and is basically an easy and engaging read in a gossippy writing style (with an occasional odd turn of phrase). There are a few things I was less happy with. For me, the sex scenes read as though the author was embarrassed or intellectualizing and so they unfortunately came off as comedy - especially the lesbian scenes - and in that context I found it hard to believe the protagonist was a gender psychiatrist. Having said that, this story has the potential to be a very creepy read late at night. I received my copy free from the author as part of the Goodreads Giveaway programme.

This book is extremely unique and different from anything I have read to date. It is a complete new twist on the good and evil. I am honestly not sure if I have fully grasped the entire story. The author only lets you know, what he thinks you should at any given time. This allows him to weave this tight web around you, making you want to read on to find out what is next, whilst slowly unravelling the web. This book definitely keeps you wondering.

Lance is quite the character who would not be able to carry this story without his wife Katherin, Miriam and Mr Green. There is no true hero or heroine, but more well orchestrated plot giving all of them their moment to carry the story.

I have received this book from the author for an honest review. (LoP, Lovers of Paranormal)

A book with hardly any proofreading errors makes this a unique reading experience these days. This book deals with adult themes, death and sex, but then if you are interested in the paranormal that will be no surprise. At first some of the sex scenes appear to be gratuitous but as you get to understand the story you realise the role they play. It is not a comfortable read, nor is it meant to be, don't take it to the beach for an easy read. I can genuinely say the central idea was one I hadn't come across, an increasingly unusual thing these days. So if you're looking for something different this is your book.

Hi, having read The Boy Who Climbed Marzipan Mountain by the same author and really enjoyed it, I was keen to read this book which is more my genre of read. I loved the characters Mr Green and Sister Miriam the best, especially Mr Green who was very creepy but likeable and whom I also felt sympathy for. I did enjoy the book greatly at time where I could not put it down and also I had moments of being unclear on what happening and a little less interested. I think overall it was a good read, however, for me the ending was a little disappointing and left me wondering what had happened. I will certainly be keeping an eye out for more by this author.
