125 books170 followersDale was born in West Virginia in 1968, and grew up in a town called Princeton, just north of the Virginia line. His stories have appeared in lots of places—The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Asimov’s Science Fiction, Amazing Stories, Sci-Fiction, Lightspeed Magazine, and various anthologies. Several of them have been nominated for awards, and “Death and Suffrage,” later filmed as part of Showtime’s television anthology series Masters of Horror, won the International Horror Guild Award.
In 2003, Golden Gryphon Press collected his stories as The Resurrection Man’s Legacy and Other Stories. Two novels, The Fallen and House of Bones, came out from Signet books around the same time. A third novel—Sleeping Policemen, written with with his friend Jack Slay, Jr.—came out in 2006. He has also written a study of haunted-house fiction called American Nightmares.
He lives in North Carolina with his wife and daughter.

Între 1347 şi 1450, ciuma bubonică a devastat Europa, ucigând jur de 75 de milioane de oameni. Boala, numită şi Moartea Neagră din cauza pustulelor negre care erupeau pe pielea celor contaminaţi, a fost provocată de o bacterie cunoscută sub denumirea de Yersinia pestis. Locuitorii de atunci ai Europei, neavând la dispoziţie microscoape sau cunoştinţe despre factorii bolii, şi‑au pus nenorocirea pe seama unui Dumnezeu înfuriat. Oamenii rătăceau pe pământ autoflagelându‑se, în speranţa că-I vor domoli mânia. „Au murit cu sutele, şi ziua, şi noaptea, ne povesteşte Agnolo di Tura. Mi‑am îngropat cinci copii cu mâinile mele… atât de mulţi au murit, încât toţi credeau că a venit sfârşitul lumii.” Astăzi, Europa numără aproape 729 de milioane de locuitori.
Când se lasă seara, lui Wyndham îi place să se aşeze pe verandă şi să bea. Preferă ginul, dar bea orice. Nu ţine neapărat la el. În ultima vreme, a urmărit cum se lasă întunericul ― a urmărit atent, vreau să spun, nu a stat pur şi simplu şi a privit ― şi a ajuns la concluzia că clişeul e greşit. Noaptea nu se lasă. Fenomenul e mult mai complex.
Deşi nu era perfect convins de precizia observaţiilor lui.
Vara e în toi şi deseori se apucă de băut pe la două sau trei, aşa că până la apusul soarelui, în jurul lui nouă, de obicei e beat criţă. Totuşi, i se pare, dacă i se mai pare ceva, că noaptea se ridică, mai întâi se adună în bazine de cerneală pe sub copaci, ieşite parcă din nişte rezervoare subterane, apoi se extinde în exterior, către marginea curţii, şi în sus, către cerul încă luminat. Numai spre sfârşit se lasă ceva ― bezna spaţiului infinit, bănuieşte el, care alunecă de sus, de deasupra pământului. Cele două suprafeţe întunecate se întâlnesc undeva la mijloc, şi asta înseamnă, de fapt, noaptea.
Cel puţin asta‑i teoria lui.
Nu veranda e de vină, în paranteză fie spus, dar nici ginul ― cu excepţia faptului că, din câte poate spune Wyndham, totul îi aparţine lui acum.
Povestirile‑despre‑sfârşitul‑lumii se împart în două categorii.
În prima, lumea se sfârşeşte din cauza unui dezastru natural, fie necunoscut, fie cunoscut, dar de proporţii fără precedent. Potopul e pe primul loc ― Dumnezeu însuşi, ni se spune, îl apreciază foarte mult ―, cu toate că şi molimele au susţinătorii lor. O nouă eră glaciară e şi ea foarte populară. La fel şi seceta.
În a doua, fiinţe umane iresponsabile provoacă singure sfârşitul lumii. Savanţi nebuni sau birocraţi corupţi, de obicei. Metoda clasică e schimbul de rachete balistice intercontinentale, deşi scenariul e inspirat de mediul geopolitic actual.
Vă invit să combinaţi şi să potriviţi:
Virus gripal modificat genetic ― se oferă cineva? Calote polare în curs de topire?

Read as part of “Wastelands” anthology. Copied from my review on that:
[The story is] not bad, has some funny moments. But sort of pointless. It’s more of author’s stream of consciousness than a story, because the “lead” character is presented in the third person, but the narration itself is in the first person. I thought there would be an explanation, but there wasn’t, so I’m assuming it was from the author’s POV. Which doesn’t make sense in the context of the story, but is there because he didn’t bother coming up with a cleverer/more interesting way of presenting his views on the subject of apocalypse and apocalyptic stories. Several of those views rubbed me the wrong way too - e.g. the false equivalence drawn between the misogynistic view of women or their sexuality and the general assumption that all men are potential rapists. Those are not in the same category - while not all men would probably turn to rape in extreme circumstances, I’d wager most of them would - based on the historical accounts of men’s behaviour. Also, the scene with “the woman” trying to talk the lead character into having sex (after dolling up, of course) in order to “repopulate the Earth” - are you kidding me? Sounds like male wishful thinking to me… (yes, he was satirizing the trope; I’m specifically talking about how unrealistic it is for a woman to present the idea, only about a month into the apocalypse, since she would be the one doing most of the repopulation)

A twenty minute read that was more about how it wasn't the stereotypical end of the world scenario, and maybe a little too close to reality for good fiction.
