This has 神率 of 50.3% on Chil-Chil!
Overall 4 ⭐️
A collection of short stories, the 1st story 月影 The Moonlight and 5th story 逃げ水 Mirage are easily the best work from Shoowa-sensei. Set in the early Showa era, the story transcended the BL realm and covered deep topics of social class, racism, war and peace, different kinds of love… It made big waves when it was published in the 麗人 magazine. I personally feel so-so about the three other stories in the middle, non-sense comedy, hence the overall rating.

This story is told through the lens of the seme 医師, a doctor who’s watched the uke 清人 grow up. The uke is a foreign baby with light colored hair and blue eyes, 清美 a girl from the brothel picked him up and a few of them begged the owner to let them raise him.
Due to his different appearance, the uke was always bullied by other kids, the seme would bring him to the traditional candy shop and buy him different colored Konpeitō as treat. Also kept on giving him encouragement to not give up on life, leave this small down and go to Tokyo, study hard and pursue his dream of becoming a doctor…
The girl who raised the uke passed away when he was 5, and the other girls also left one by one… As the uke reached 14, the brothel owner decided to train him to be a male prostitute to repay the years of raising him.
The seme can only provide mental support to the uke but cannot buy his life or change his fate, since he’s already married with kids, the brother owner told him not to bother borrowing money to buy out uke.
When the uke reached 16, he’s giving into the reality of life and started accepting customers without fighting back. One day the uke invited the seme to come over for a night for drinks overlooking the courtyard. The uke begged the seme to have sex just one time with the man he loved. The seme has also liked the uke for a long time but kept on suppressing his longing and desires. The next morning they bid farewell, little did the seme know it’s gonna be bye forever.
A older gentleman bought out the uke from the brothel, plan to bring him to Tokyo to study, just to accompany him until he die. The uke left a letter for the seme, thanking him for the encouragement and support he’s given over the years…

This story is told through the lens of uke, when he’s on the death bed remembering his younger days, blurring reality and dream, with fragments of pain and suffering.
The rich man who adopted the uke, 伊藤一成 passed away on July 28, 1941, however his overseas assets (US, Holland) are frozen, as the war is coming to Japan.
The step-dad used to be a professor of philosophy at the University of Kyoto, the uke followed him to Tokyo at the age of 16, about to turn 17 in Jan. The step-dad told uke to disguise his age as 15, since he’s self-studied to elementary level of literacy, he shall learn from the teacher and be able to enter middle school in April.
The step-dad lived between the times, underaged for the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, didn’t pass the enlistment review for Siege of Tsingtao in 1014. He had a weak body and has always been interested in academics. When the two met in the small town brothel, he liked the uke and recognized his talent, wanted to groom him as Japan’s future generation.
The uke has Caucasian and he’s an abandoned baby who’s never met his parents. Even in Tokyo he continues to be bullied by classmates and strangers. What kept him going is the dream of becoming a doctor. He studied really hard day and night, and was looking forward to the newly constructed 北里柴三郎 medical library in the university. One day the uke came home and had a sharp long cut on his left chin, the step-dad told him that will make him look even more courageous.
After the step-dad passed away, the uke and his classmate (seme) 山口素臣 always studied in the university library together. Coming from a military home, the seme is the 4th kid, while his older bothers all entered military academy, he insisted on studying medicine at private university.
Due to the lack of soldiers, even the students had reduced lecture schedule and had to do military training. The seme’s repeated grade and lazed around for 3 years. On the 8th year of the uke arriving in Tokyo, at age 24 he’s fallen in love with someone for the second time.
In August, Tmthe uke invited the seme to take a trip to Nasu village, they enjoyed catching fish in the clear river and cooked dinner at night. The uke got together with the seme before his step-dad’s 49th day of death and spent 3 days together.
However, Pearl Harbor Attach happened in Dec 1941 and the seme need to be enlisted, he went though enlistment review in May the previous year. His older brother died so he had to go as he turned 25 in Nov. Four years passed and the seme didn’t come back, in 1945 the US air raid has already reach Japan mainland, the uke found a new purpose which is to save others lives.
In 1946, the uke got transferred to Chiba and continued to take care of patients from Tokyo. In 1948 the uke got married with the maid who support him through the war, and his kid was born two years later.
The uke keeps on learning new kinds of love in his life, whether from the brothel ladies who raised him since he was a baby, the doctor who encouraged him to live, the step-dad who taught him about philosophy, the classmate who he dated and loved, the wife that went through the worst times and the offsprings that he had…
