To some, hope is a wish for a better outcome to a present circumstance. In 1932, the citizens of Hope, Alabama, bravely fought despair as the Depression held them in the grips of its bleakness. Fourteen year old Libby Miller has lived in Hope her entire young life. She appreciates the simple niceness of her town and its residents. However, an eccentric neighbor who only speaks in a whispered voice will cause Libby to learn more about her small town of Hope, Alabama than she would ever dream to know. She had always found her next door neighbor Mrs. Imogene Knight annoying and intrusive, even though the woman never left her house. Every few weeks, a mysterious intruder visits Mrs. Knight and peeps in the windows prompting Libby’s father, Owen, to investigate and calm the woman’s nerves. As innocent as this seems, a more sinister crime will be committed to forever change Libby’s view of her upright community. She discovers her hometown’s name is an enigmatic label after her best friend Ellie Andrews is murdered while they were picnicking on the last day of school. Although Libby is with Ellie when she is murdered, she cannot identify the murderer. However, Ellie’s murder is not the only mystery Hope conceals. The Culpeppers, who owned the town’s grocery market, were brutally murdered one night at their store. After Ellie’s murder, citizens wonder if an outsider has come to their town and moved on quietly leaving them with another unsolvable mystery. Libby is forced to mature quickly as she mourns her friend’s death and resolves to find the murderer. While she continues with her ambitions of graduating high school and attending nursing school, Libby searches for any clue to solve Ellie’s murder. Several people prove helpful, including to her surprise, Mrs. Knight, who has her own tragic history with Hope. Libby forms a genuine bond with the older woman and learns valuable information about her community and its secrets. She also learns how true friendships survive any circumstances. However, Hope is not so ready to release its protective grip of Ellie’s killer.
