Florence Love #2

In the Name of Love

Rate this book
In the Name of Love by Louise Lee marks the return of 'flawed, feisty and funny as hell' (Mel Giedroyc) heroine Florence Love. With its rapidfire, irreverent sense of humour and sass that will appeal to fans of Marian Keyes and Mhairi McFarlane, this book actively encourages laugh-snorts - and maybe a little sob on the side.

Retired, technically, Florence Love is a long way from her London Private Investigator glory days. But her latest target is achingly personal.

A ration of Montepulciano in her water pouch, Flo finds herself racing around Italy on a borrowed Vespa in the name of love. Bambi Love, specifically. Her mum - missing for twenty-five years. The one case that's still unsolved.

To find Bambi, maintaining focus will be critical. Florence must not be distracted.

Not even by a beautiful, goosebump-inducing Italian stranger with mafiosi friends and a habit of suddenly disappearing himself, who knows far more than he's letting on...

Louise Lee was once a Geography teacher. When oxbow lakes no longer floated her boat, she took the next, natural step in her career progression and became a Private Investigator. Memorable cases include a high-functioning bigamist with three wives and six children, who was set to marry a fourth; and losing a target because George Clooney started chatting her up in a bar.

Louise undertook an MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck, and has had work commissioned by BBC Radio Four. The Florence Love series follows the life of an irreverent, thoroughly ‘modern’ PI who specialises in entrapment, and Louise would love to hear from fellow Florences.

If Louise’s mum is reading this, the books are in no way based on her true experiences. Honest.

Florence Love is back, and this time she has put her PI life behind her (well sort of).

Her first ever-case was a personal one, one that she has never manged to solve, and now she is ready to resume her search for answers.

Her personal investigation will see her travelling through Italy, coming face to face with the mafia, and even end up with a very real threat of death – well there was a gun in her mouth!

Has her intuition lead her on the right path, or is she following a trail destined to fail?

In 2015 I had the pleasure of reading ‘The Last Honeytrap‘, the first book in the Florence Love series. It has since been renamed ‘A Girl Called Love’. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and rated it four stars.

The last Honeytrap/A Girl Called Love, was a highly-amusing, intriguing book, one that I read in a couple of days. I loved Florence. She was one feisty character, so when I heard book two was out I was eager to read it, and continue the Florence Love story.

Personally for me, I felt that book two was far more superior than book one. Whilst book one was brilliant, book two is superb.

The whole scenario had me hooked. The Italian settings were divine, and the characters, especially Tomassco were adorable. They had you wanting to get to know them more, and be involved in their lives.

Florence’s brother Micheal is also back for book two. Louise Lee broke the norm of characters in books when she added Michael, as Michael has learning difficulties. I feel that Louise must have done a lot of research to perfect his mannerisms and the way that he viewed the world. I also love how much Florence adores her little brother.

This is one of those books, that you hope to grab the odd five minutes break, just so you can pick it up and dive into it again, though you will find yourself not wanting to put it back down again.

The opening scene sets the book perfectly, and I waited patiently all the way through to see if Florence finally solved her case. Now I can’t wait for book three.

A first-rate book that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I can’t wait to meet Florence again.

Something I didn't realise when I requested this book on Netgalley is that it's actually the follow-up to A Girl Called Love which I haven't read. This made me a little nervous that I wouldn't be able to follow the storyline. I have to admit there were moments that left me confused, I could make a guess about what the characters were referring to but I felt like I was missing too much of the back story.

The first pages were all action - there was a church, a priest and a gun but I couldn't figure out how they were all connected. It wasn't until later on in the storyline that this part made sense.

It took me a little while to find my feet with this story but when I did, I was enthralled by the quirky style of writing. I enjoyed piecing together bits of Flo's life as I progressed through the book, she was an interesting character who had a very logical way of thinking. Her quest to find her mum was certainly entertaining - I had no idea what was coming next!

I was taken on quite a journey from Italy to the UK and back again. Throughout it all, my favourite part was the connection between Flo and her brother Michael, the two of them together were pretty much guaranteed to put a smile on my face,

The ending left me on such a teasing cliffhanger. It was one of those moments that leaves you staring at the page for a few minutes while you try to comprehend what just happened.

This was a bizarrely addictive read. There were some confusing moments and some laugh-out-loud moments so all I can say is be prepared for a crazy ride!

Louise Lee's latest Florence Love instalment is Fun with a capital 'F'. Her Entrapment career having come to an abrupt end due to excess media attention, Florence turns her attention to Case 0001, her first ever case, still unsolved- that of the disappearance (possible suicide) of Bambi Love, her mother.

And so the adventure begins, we have priests wielding guns, a road trip (or two) to Italy, and a sexy crime lord (in training), on top of that, it's fast paced, has snappy dialogue, is a laugh a minute with nicely developed characters. I would term this 'quirky with heart', I loved it.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Keep 'em coming Ms Lee, can't wait for the next one.

I found this book quite confusing to start with. I didn't read the first book in this series and I'm assuming things would have made more sense if I had.

We were thrown straight into the story with Florence about to be killed by a priest, which totally threw me as I had no idea why she was there or what on earth was happening! Then we jump back in time to a week before and find that Florence is actually in Rome to look for her Mother. This is her Mum who supposedly is dead (committed suicide) and her Father / the police / the rest of the world believes she is dead.

There was an awful going on with Florence dashing all over Rome looking for her Mother, or anyone who knew her, then back in the UK, then back in Italy, and I did find it quite hard to keep up with everything as it jumped around a lot and there were quite a few characters in both countries. Although things did become a bit clearer later in the book and we do eventually find out about her Mother.

I read the first book in this series and really enjoyed it, being left with a bit of a cliffhanger from the first book I was very happy to get my hands on an ARC of this, the second book, in the series. Sadly although I did enjoy reading this one, it just wasn't quite as good as the first one, there is a lot of jumping backwards and forwards between Italy and the UK and in places it was a little hard to follow. The book is a direct continuation from the first one and tells the story of Florence searching for the whereabouts of her mother.

I did not like this book at all. It was boring and quite confusing. I was hoping that it would pick up but it didn’t at all. I also thought it would be a cute romance story but it’s the opposite. I would not recommend.

This book is a follow up which is something I didn't realise at first and so at the start of the book I was somewhat confused by what was going on - why was there a gun pointing at her! - although things were explained later in the book I would recommend that you read A Girl Called Love first

The story takes place in Italy with Florence Love trying to find her mother who was supposed to be dead and it is definitely a roller coaster of a book involving priests, guns mafia the lot but when you do realise what is going on it is a definitely a good fun read. I particularly loved the relationship between Florence and her brother Michael who has special needs and is a great character

This is such a fun book with the perfect mix of ingredients; a sassy heroine, a gorgeous Italian love interest, a priest with mafiosi connections, and a lot of fun along the way.

In the Name of Love is the second book in the Florence Love series, the previous book being The HoneyTrap.  I have not read the previous book and this did not effect my enjoyment of the book or the understanding of the plot.  Louise Lee does include important points from the previous books plot for background information.  As I was reading this book I really wanted to be Florence Love,  She is sassy, fun, intelligent, confident, fiesty and ultimately flawed.  Florence's relationship with her brother, Michael, who has Asperger's was very endearing.  She was both protective of him and encouraged him to live his life, and was never apologetic about his condition or behaviour.  As for the other characters, you can't have a book set in Italy without some mention of the mafiosi.  Louise Lee has a gun wielding priest who is in hiding after taking on the mafia; and the handsome love interest, Tommasso, whose is next in line to be in charge of the family business, the heat of a mafia family.  Along the way, in her search for her mother Florence meets many other memorable characters, both in Italy and England to pique your interest.

I think that for all the fun and humour of the book at its heart is a family that have been torn apart by the dissappeance of a mother and wife.  Believed dead, Florence discovers evidence that her Italian mother is alive and living under an assumed name after being involved in something that links to the mafia.  Her search for her mother causes friction within her family has her father wants her to leave all alone and her brother doesn't like her being away.

There are so many memorable moments in this novel; you will laugh, cry and ultimately fall in love with Florence Love.  In the Name of Love is exciting, entertaining and additictive; be prepared to loose yourself in the pages of this book.
