Thirty six year old Alexandra Angelo was just beginning a new job at the office of Doctor Rachel Benson. It wasn't long before an attraction between the two women became evident. Both women refused to acknowledge the attraction because Alex was Rachel's employee and Rachel was Alex's boss. If the relationship did not work out, it would become awkward in the office. The harder the women tried to ignore their feelings, the deeper the feelings became. Add to the mix a mother who does not want her daughter dating "the help" Can two women from different backgrounds have a relationship that can stand the test of time?
Lydia has been a New Jersey resident her entire life. She now lives with her wife at the Jersey Shore and writing full time after years in the business industry. Years of writing stories for as long as she could remember, she decided to put her first book out in June of 2014.
Alexandra Angelo is a down-on-her-luck office employee on her first day of work. She's snagged the plum job of secretary in the office of attractive doctor Rachel Benson - alas. I say "alas" because their romance is fought by both of them - Benson's family and their relative social positions militate against making a move.
This book is formatted for Kindle Unlimited. I say that because it is actually a problem. Amazon is beginning to factor in how long a book is, and how many pages are read before it is returned, in the amount of money given to an author for checking out the book. This particular book has responded by instituting extremely wide margins and double-spacing. It comes across like a student desperately trying to make a page limit, padding out its meager length. Or like a man stuffing socks down his pants. This mirrors a growing number of similarly very short works I have read off Kindle Unlimited lately. (Kindle Unlimited in the past encouraged multiple short ficlets of 10,000 words or less, as it paid-per-book. I suspect they will have to institute formatting rules at some point as well.)
In common with other self-published books offered through Kindle Unlimited, the writing is fairly clunky. The fine polish that authors gain through the editorial process is missing. While some authors manage to produce content of astonishing quality despite this, often the work of less experienced authors (like the ones who would be highly tempted to self-publish roughly turned-out stories through Kindle Unlimited) visibly suffers. I am sorry to report that this is one of those stories which suffer.
In the end the whiplashing moods, dull characterization, and difficult prose affected my ability to continue reading the book. I never finished. I am surprised that so many others rate the book so highly, and I must question them; I can level specific criticisms at stiff dialogue, clumsy world-building, and an over-reliance on "telling" the reader rather than showing. Even the blurb of this very Goodreads page hints at those problems, which continue throughout the novel. It required an editor, and to be honest with its formatting - which was irritating at best, and fraud to Amazon at worst.
I actually quite liked this book. I had never read the author before and got pleasantly surprised. The book var very fast paced for a romance, almost a bit too fast, but an enjoyable read.
Lydia Rose has another hit on her hands. I just loved this book. I loved the way she had Alex and Rachel fall in love. It goes to show that true love can survive all problem that occur. It is a must read novel. You won't be disappointed.
Very nice story and beautifully described characters. I really like the way Lydia Rose writes thus I am planning to read more of her books. Romantic story with a nice end
I love reading this book from Lydia Rose.. I'm getting spoiled cause all the books I've read so far are very good. Alex and Rachel are both professionals, down to earth and honest. I was so glad Rachel mother accepted the relationship at last, after saving Alex. Charming sweet, not a rush lust romance, its.. Simply wonderful.. Definitely recommend it.. .
Loved this book. If you're looking for a light read then this is for you. Excellent read and funny in places serious in others. Had trouble putting it down.
