Pack by Jeaniene Frost
Werewolf shifter romantic suspense novella. Stand-alone.
Previously published in the Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance and Under Her Skin anthology. Updated and expanded for the separate publication.
Marlee Peters is disappointed when her friends cancelled on their vacation. She decides to go hiking on her own in the Yellowstone National Park. And unfortunately, a single hiker can be prey for the unwary. Marlee is followed and terrorized by a group of biting wolves. She finds a savior in Daniel but finds herself being held prisoner. He says she might turn into a wolf with the full moon.

Marlee falls a little for Daniel but doesn’t know why. Stockholm syndrome? Or fated mates?
Pretty good for a novella length werewolf romance.

This was a nice short story. Every once in a while a short story is exactly what I want. I picked up this short story on a day that I knew that I would be able to fit in a couple of hours of listening time and I wanted experience a story from beginning to end. I somehow missed this Jeaniene Frost short story when it was originally published in a couple of previous anthologies, Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance and Under Her Skin. I really enjoyed listening to this story.

Marlee is on a hiking trip with a couple of friends. When they have to leave, she decides to finish her trip by herself. She is hunted by a pack of wolves and eventually attacked. Things would have been even worse for Marlee if Daniel wasn't there to stop the attack. He protects Marlee and makes sure she gets the care that she needs.

I liked both Marlee and David. I liked that Marlee doesn't just accept things as they are. David was incredibly protective of Marlee and extremely patient as well. They do have a lot of chemistry together and I really liked watching the pair with each other. It was a bit of insta love that I usually don't enjoy but it seems to work in a werewolf story because they are wolves and it is just different.

I liked the idea of werewolves living in a community like this one. An entire village hidden and yet so close to normal civilization. The supporting characters that were in the story really make me want to see more of this world. I liked the way the community took care of things and including maintaining order withing the wolves through swift punishment.

I enjoyed the narration of this audiobook. Tavia Gilbert was able to use different voices for each character making the story flow really well. The story is told from Marlee's perspective and I thought she was able to capture Marlee's range of emotions very well. I think that I actually enjoyed the story as much as I did largely because of the narration.

I would recommend this short story to others. I would really like to see this idea expanded into a full length novel set in this world. This story is short but it tells a entertaining and complete story. I have read many of Jeaniene Frost's books and look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

I received a review copy of this book from Blackstone Audio via Audiobook Jukebox for the purpose of providing an honest review.

Initial Thoughts
This was a pretty good short story - nothing mind blowing but good nonetheless. I liked the narration quite a bit for this piece. I actually would like to see more of this wolf pack.

I’ve had a love affair with Jeaniene Frost’s vamps for years, and the titles in her NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD Paranormal Romance series provide some stiff competition for her Urban Fantasy novels, so adding werewolves to her writing cocktail was the next logical step. PACK previously appeared in two anthologies, but the addition of 20% more material, and of Tavia Gilbert’s voice were the deciding factors in it moving to the top of my to-be-read pile.

The author covers a lot of ground in this novelette from Marlee’s turning, to her coping with her new reality, to accepting Daniel as her mate. All of this made for a fully-loaded story which is hard to believe considering that the audio’s total run time is only one and a half hours. I really felt for the heroine for having the courage to chase after a lifelong dream, and for the pack’s enforcer for knowing when to push and when to hold steady.

Tavia Gilbert has narrated all of Frost’s books, so I knew that listeners were in extremely capable hands with this latest addition to her repertoire. This adventure is told from Peters’ perspective, and the reader smoothly captured the wide range of emotions that the protagonist experiences. The voices and inflections that she used for the other characters were equally stunning. And, of course, one mustn’t forget the bonus sex scene!

PACK was (hopefully) Jeaniene Frost’s way of opening the door to a world of shifter possibilities.

Novella/Short Story Review:

This is a book that I found through my Libby. I had no clue that this book even existed and I was more than delighted to try it out. Jeaniene Frost trying out shifter romance?? Sign Me Up. The only downside to this book was how short it was. I would have loved to see her do more shifter romance as I was highly impressed with this short story. I think what impressed me the most was how well she developed the pack dynamics within such a short period.

The premise of the story was quite interesting. I really had a blast seeing how this romance developed. We basically have a story where our heroine gets attacked, she is kidnapped in a way but the pack can't let anyone know they exist. She and our hero are fated mates, but she is struggling facing with reality and wants to run away from the hero.

It has some fun bantering, great interesting dynamics for a shifter pack and really enjoyed the way in which the romance developed. The forced proximity aspects were fun and Tavia Gilbert really elevated the suspense elements. I always appreciate how she narrates a story and she really brought this one to life.

Overall I had a blast with this one and very intrigued to see if the author plans on writing anymore shifter romance in the future.

Although simple, I enjoyed this short story and I would love to read either this same story, or another within this world, as a full length novel. After all, I am interested, and since I love Jeaniene Frost because her writing has proven to be consistently entertaining, I can only expect it to be great.

UPDATE: When I spotted this in audible plus I didn’t even realise I’d already read it, I just downloaded it because I love the author. I’m glad I have it another chance because I enjoyed it more than my previous review implies.

Yes it’s a novella so things happen fast but if that’s what you go in expecting then it’s not a negative. This was a fun little story for when you’re in the mood for something quick to read or listen to. I’ve changed my rating from 3 to 4 stars.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Pack is a short story that was originally published in the Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance (back in 2009) and has apparently been updated and added to before it was re-released as a stand alone ebook. I can't confirm how much has changed because I never read the original but I have to admit that this isn't Jeaniene Frost's best work.

It's not a terrible story but it's only around 50 pages long so there isn't much time for character development, especially considering this isn't set in a world we're familiar with and is actually the author's first attempt at writing about werewolves. I didn't dislike the story but I can't say it was particularly memorable, there is definitely potential here and if the author said she was going to write more books in this world then I'd happily buy them but I think we needed a longer story to give us time to connect with the characters.

I'm not sure whether to recommend this or not, if you just want something quick to read then it isn't a bad way to spend 20 minutes but if you're looking for something with a bit more depth then there are plenty of other options available.

I bought the 'extended' version on Kindle. Sorry to say I liked it even less. The new material is simply a sex scene at the end. But the story still doesn't appeal much to me, drowning angst in an unbeatable mate bond isn't a plot. It's a deus ex machina, something external on the author say-so.

june 2015

The story started very strong, but probably needed a much longer format to avoid being watered down this strongly. Pity, I loved the first 50%.

What a cute story! It really had depth. I was disappointed to find out it was just a short story with no future novel scheduled for release in the near future.

I loved Marlee. She was headstrong when it was called for, but could still see reason when she was out of options. Her life wasn't going to well because of all of the impossible expectations she's set for herself. So when she gets lost on a hike and is attacked, to her, that's the all time worst possible thing that could happen to her period.

Daniel was a cutie pie -teehee-. He was the not so typical alpha male. I said "not so typical" because he actually showed an emotion other than anger and lust. He showed that he actually cared for the well being of Marlee aside from the bedroom (which never happened in this novel - Update: In the updated version of the story it does happen.).

I would love a follow up novel to this short story. The author did post an explanation as to why she wouldn't consider writing a sequel to this, but she did express interest in writing about wolves in another world in a future novel. I guess that'll have to be enough!

Favorite Quotes:

"We'll kill for it was left unsaid, but I heard that loud and clear in the subtext."

"Now I knew what a piece of meat felt when it was dangled above a crocodile pit."

"The wolf was me stripped of all my pretense, and it knew, unequivocally, that Daniel was mine."

The world the author created had promise, and the beginning wasn't bad, but the rest of this novella was almost unbearable for me. The heroine was incredibly dense and stubborn. The hero had no personality, beyond being hot. There was absolutely no chemistry between them. The main characters didn't even get to know each other at all for the whole book, but then at the end they were suddenly happily ever after together.

Pack

I Picked Up This Book Because: Needed a quick listen while finishing up some errands.

The Characters:

Marlee Peters:
Daniel:
Christopher, Jack, Mel, David, Mike, Liz, Rick, Brie

The Story:

A quick story of a woman suddenly being thrust into a new world only to find that it’s right where she belongs. After getting lost camping in the woods alone Marlee is attacked and turned into a wolf. She is forced to stay with the pack anticipating her first turn and learning to adjust to her new life when she learns that the pack enforcer, Daniel, is her mate. This story moves quick and steams up pretty fast. I enjoyed it.

This is a very short 1.5 hrs audiobook that is free with their plus catalog. Marley is on a vacation in Yellowstone when she’s attacked and bitten by werewolves. She’s rescued by Daniel, an enforcer, but left with two options. If she doesn’t turn into a were at the next full moon she can stay in the pack as a skinwalker or die.

I made it 30 min. This is very short, and I needed the plot to move along. We’re seven chapters in, and Marley continues to be prickly, abrasive, and calling them all monsters… which frustrates me. 1- they saved her, but she calls them her kidnappers. And 2- if you’re worried that you’re going to be killed- be smart, and friendly- it just makes sense.

Could be used as a Public Service Announcement for how not to begin one's wolfy novel. Ejaculated so much nonsense that I irrationally shouted nonsense back as some dim defense against this irrational input, "Herpity-derpity-doo!"

Book party fouls: starts in flashback, floating talking head, first person POV fail, victim mentality, convenient, explaining emotions, mixed metaphor. I'm not going to list them all, but only someone who has lead a very sheltered life would buy any of this.

Cute, and short but I was hoping for more. I think there were some interesting premises here that Frost could develop into a full length novel/series. Unfortunately, with such a low page count, there was a lot lost for me. Specifically, any real connection to the characters.

(audible review) This was a really good short novella story. I enjoyed every bit of it. I liked Maddy and Daniel together. I enjoyed the werewolf story line. Seems like a new series might come out of this. Never know.

As for the narration, it was good. I like Tavia Gilbert. She does read very fast, however to me that is better than real slow drawn out dull robotic reader. Tavia is not that.

I like the concept of this book but I don’t know if I like the story.
I get that Marlee would be out of sorts with everything that went on but she was pretty whinny.

I hope that if this becomes a series we get a more put together Marlee someone who isn’t as she was in this book. What I like about Jeaniene Frost books are that her Heroines are always strong and know who they are and what they are. So that is my hope.

Again I loved Tavia’s performance.

"Pack" by Jeaniene Frost was a good novelette. It is about Marlee going hiking by herself because everyone who was supposed to go with her backed out. She is walking when she comes upon a pack of wolves, and one of them has a grudge against humans and bites her. She is then taken to their town and is under observation by Daniel to see if she is going to change on the 1st full moon. I really enjoyed this story, and I am a big fan of Shifters.

SUPER quick audio.

Pack was a random audio I found on the romance package. It's a werewolf shifter book, obviously. In it, you will meet Marlee. She was an okay character but she whined a lot. I totally get that she didn't want to become a werewolf but she was pushing away Daniel - who was a damn sweet heart!

Daniel found his mate in Marlee but couldn't force himself on her or anything. Mostly because that's what a man shouldn't do. He was her protector and tried to calmly show her what the werewolf life could be like and what it is. At least in his pack.

Their chemistry was cute and their bantering was cuter. It was definitely a predictable romance because you knew that these two had instant attraction. Overall, I wish it was longer.

I grabbed this one when it popped up on my library site. After looking at it I had read the book when it came out in an anthology years ago, but didn't remember it all that well. After listening to this one I realized why, this one is very blah. Reading it once was more than enough.

Marlee is enjoying a hike in Yellowstone when she is attacked by a pack of wolf shifters and her world is turned on its axis. Daniel, the pack enforcer is tasked with keeping her safe and contained until they know her fate. Marlee and Daniel have incredible chemistry and when they finally get together it is hot. Pack is a short novella. Although the story it told was compete, I would have loved to read more about Daniel and Marlee after the HEA. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did not resonate with me. I think I would have enjoyed the print version more. I recommend this book to people looking for a quick paranormal romance.

No spoilers. Listened to via Libby.

I needed a short spicy read, and this met that, but the spice was too short along with this novelette. I would have loved a little bit more longer to have more “plot”. It had great potential to be a good quick paranormal romance novella.

Would I recommend? Maybe, if you want to get a book done real quick, take a listen or read.

This was... this is hard to write. I listened to the audio book while doing chores, and I didn't like the narrator's voice. And that is coloring my view of the story. I think the bones of something enjoyable is there. There were elements I liked or found interesting enough to give this a second chance by actually reading it.

I just love anything written by Jeaniene Frost. Her "Cat and Bones" series is one of my all time favorites. So, when I received email notification that she was offering a free reading of her short novella, "Pack" for a short time only, I jumped at the chance of reading this werewolf love story.

Marlee and her two friends are out enjoying a camping trip when Brandy twists her ankle. Instead of leaving with them, Marlee decides to continue the trip alone After becoming lost for several days, Marlee comes face to face with danger when she is hunted down and attacked by a huge wolf. She refuses to die easily and gouges out one of the wolves eye. However, suddenly another wolf appears rescuing her. Then, he does the unbelievable and turns into a naked man, Daniel.

Marlee is brought to the pack where the wolf who attacked her is being held for attacking her. If she turns into a were, he will be killed. If not, losing his eye is considered punishment enough. No matter what though, Marlee will not be allowed to go home and potentially reveal the secrets of the pack. As the reality of this situation sinks in, Marlee discovers she is in fact going to transform into a wolf when all of her injuries mysteriously heal. If that is not enough, she also discovers that she an Daniel are mates.

This story is definitely a good, quick, read. However, it is lacking the normal "hot" sex scenes Jeaniene Frost is known for. Don't get me wrong, it is good but it would have been awesome with a little nookie!!
