Through the Ages #2

Monsters and Men

Rate this book
The sequel to Time and Tide, by E.M. Lindsey

"Sometimes the war created monsters out of men, and sometimes men from the monsters. Sometimes that line between the two was blurry and difficult to tell which was which, but no matter how it turned out, there was always hope."

August Owens was born as the world recovered from the First World War. Labeled strange and inclined to the immoral, he suffers at the hands of vicious prejudice against the men who raised his father. By four he learned the meaning of the word abomination, and by ten he knew because of his differences, he would never have unconditional love from his mother.

When things come crumbling down, August is whisked across the United States by his father, Noah, to live with his grandfathers where he can truly feel at home. But that peace and love comes with a price. Heavy loss and injury plagues his young teenage life, and he's forced to navigate the world with a violent scar across his face, and never-ending looks of pity.

Then comes the Second World War, and everything changes. Half-blind and left for dead on the shores of Omaha Beach, August is taken in by Frenchman with a past full of shadows. As he's nursed back to health, August learns to accept that he deserves to be seen for who he is, and not for the scars he bears.

Well I liked this one a lot too. Sequel to Time and Tide centers around August, Noah's son and grandchild to Teddy and William from Time and Tide.
This book is set in the time period of WWII so be warned there is a large amount of tragedy in this book. It is the journey of August's life which is plagued by misfortune.
This book like the other is all the journey. Yes there is a love story, August meets Fredo at war and their love is very sweet and worth the wait. It is not the main focus of the book though.
August learns from an early age life can suck and people can be mean even those who are supposed to love you.
August has his dad and his grandparents Will and Teddy and they love him through everything. Together these men really illustrate what family is all about. This is all about unconditional love, finding it in others and also learning to love yourself when life has dealt you some rough cards.
Good book, really enjoyed it.
Not high on steam, romance only occurs late into the book, but getting there was worth it. There are some very emotional times in the book and dealing with disfigurement and death.

Wow, that was astonishingly very complex and well written story plot. Whole story is a bomb of emotions so be prepared.

For me that book is one of those works you don't know what to write about because its to good to actually find the right words for it.

Author "E.M. Lindsey" done marvelous work with that book and I do recommend it to all those who actually looking for complex story plots.

Beautiful

I loved time and Elizabeth's was a fitting sequel. William and Teddy are back and we are introduced to their grandson August. I was cheering for him to get his HEA and wow he is one that deserved it. I know that I need just one more book from this period perhaps adopted son to bring it modern times?

This was an epic love story and I adored it.

This was a heartwrenching story spanning decades in the lives of several interesting, well-developed characters during an era of innocence and world turmoil. I took a deep interest in each of the characters, which is quite unusual as often times characters are written to flesh out a storyline or add humor/drama to the telling of the tale. Not in this book. Each person was unique and well-crafted with their own idiosyncrasies and flaws. I truly loved this book. However, I had a couple issues with the author's writing. First, a better proofreader was needed as there were many typos (not an enormous amount, but when author has written as many books as this one has, there should be very, very few - if any - issues with grammar, spelling, and punctuation.) Secondly, and more importantly. I found it very frustrating and highly unlikely that the main character, August, would use some of the vocabulary he was given. Here is a boy that is very bright, highly intelligent, artistic and educated. He has been raised by two intelligent, well-bred parents. Yet the author has him often speaking like he was raised in a rural backwater community. "Ain't", "You wasn't", calling his mother "Ma" - these vocabulary choices don't fit with the upbringing of a middle-class kid raised in a fairly affluent community with well-cultured parents. Other than my pickiness at these minor faults, I found this to be one of the best books I've read in a long time. My heart was profoundly touched by this story.

Have you ever tried to read a book through bleary eyes? No, really, I bawled my way through this. It was beautiful and tragic. And really, all I can manage is ‘wow’! When people say they have a book hangover, they are referring to this book!

Monsters and Men is book 2. It’s more of a duet than a series. Book One focused on Will and Teddy who had a son, Noah. Book 2 is about August, Noah’s son. From the single POV of August, this isn’t just a romance of two men. It’s a love story of father and son, and grandfathers and grandson. Even more, it’s a love story of oneself.

It’s not your usual romance, this is really the life of August and how it leads to him finding love in so many ways, but ultimately forever love in the arms of another.

Set in a period that leads to the Second World War. One surrounded by tragedy and fear. With the ghost of the first world war still hovering over them. A time that was even less accepting of gay men. Yet still, love and happiness can be found.

I loved every generation of this family of loving and accepting men. They were beautiful and led us on an amazing journey.

The writing style is lovely, the Story is wonderful, and the characters just absolutely adorable....but, well, but, the Story is really sad. That is not necessarily a bad Thing, i like sad stories. But right now I cant read stuff like that, I wanted to escape reality with a fluffy romance and this Story is many things but definetely no fluffy romance. Still, I really did like it, even though I only read about 75 percent of it. And I will definetely reread and finish it sometime later. Oh, and the love Story starts really late, but I loved both the characters. It just became so sad then and I just couldnt continue reading. I know thats life and that life can be really hard sometimes, I just dont want to be reminded of that fact and Forget about it for a couple of hours :)

What a story this was. I fell in love with this family in book one and was sucked into August story. My heart broke for him for a terrible mother and siblings he had. His father Noah, is one heck of a man but we should have known that already with who raised him.

I have cried so many tears in this book and I will say it is one that will stay with me. My heart is with all of these characters.

August has been through so much and heaven he keeps being thrown challenges but nothing breaks this sweet kid/man. He finds the perfect man when he needs help the most.

These two books all about unconditional love. Even when the world seems against them.

A sequel to Tide and Time, Will and Teddy's grandson's story. August's story just did not flow well, clunky passages of time, awkward dialogue, odd plot lines. What kept me reading was Will and Teddy, so tender and Noah finally getting some happiness! I think these two stories would have been better served as one truly lovely love story.

This is a beautiful book. It’s not a quick fun simple romance. It has a lot of emotion and sadly has real life elements that make your heart ache. But it’s worth reading for those reasons. It makes you feel and makes you happy you read it when you reach the end.

Heartbreaker

So much just heartbreaking emotions. Wasn’t sure I could deal for awhile but was more than worth the gorgeous writing and span of emotions this story brought on. Thank you for writing so beautifully of not perfect men we adore.

Four stars given for what I read which was the first few and last few chapters. Really well written with characters fleshed out. However, I know the middle to be really angsty and full of feelings and bad things happening and this is not the right time for me to read this.

Wonderful

A great sequel/companion novel to Tides. I actually read this one prior to Tides, but recently read them back to back, and it does make this story much richer.

This book is beautifully written, but there's so much loss here, almost from the first page. Wonderful descriptions, even when the subjects are war and brutality. Need to go read something light and fluffy now!

Every word in this book felt like a precious gift from the author. Such a powerful story, told in an elegant, quiet way. Not one word was wasted and the character development was the best I've ever read. This is a true mind movie. Think it's going to be in my head for a long while. There is a lot of romance on varying levels between different characters and the tenderness and fragility makes me ache. Not a lot of sex and it's not needed to tell this story.

The first book in the duo should be read first to get the full story and it's so worth it. Auto buy author for me now.

This story is from an emotion point, beautiful. Storyline is drawn around young August, his path is very well written and pulling. I couldn't put it away till the end. GREAT work.
"August last chat with his mom was epic, his word were strong and deep."
