Coco Pinchard #5

Coco Pinchard's Must-Have Toy Story

Rate this book
Coco Pinchard's Must-Have Toy Story is the second, stand-alone prequel novella to Robert Bryndza's smash-hit Coco Pinchard series. A sparkling feel-good Christmas comedy, which asks the question - how far would you go to get your child the must-have Christmas toy?

It's December 1992, and children are going crazy for the Tracy Island toy - almost as crazy as the parents! Christmas day is fast approaching and Coco Pinchard is desperately trying to track one down for her four-year-old son Rosencrantz.

Throw into the mix a horrible boss, a lazy husband, and the prospect of her in-laws arriving for the festivities, and Coco wishes she could cancel Christmas and sail off to a desert island somewhere - preferably with the gorgeous-yet-unattainable Tom from work.

But retail therapy is at hand! Coco's faithful friends Chris and Marika rally round, and even her mother-in-law Ethel tries to help in her own eccentric way.

From dodgy dealings in a motorway lay-by, to extreme shopping in Hamley's with a Sylvanian Families fanatic, to having a go at the Blue Peter make-your-own Tracy Island, Coco tries everything in the hope that Rosencrantz will open his must-have toy on Christmas morning.

Now normally when I pick up a book by Crime author Robert Bryndza I’m bouncing off the ceiling with excitement and can’t wait to get stuck in, but I’m the first to admit I’m not a fan of Rom Com, I much prefer the grit, blood and gore you find in crime thrillers, rather than hearts, flowers and laughs you often find in Rom Com. “So why read something you don’t like”? I can hear you mutter, but as the saying goes “the proof is in the pudding” if you don’t try it how can you not like it? As I’m such a fan of Robert Bryndza’s I was interested to see if he writes comedy as well as he does crime thrillers.

Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story struck a chord it left me feeling old and very nostalgic I can actually remember my husband and myself traipsing around every damn toy shop in the UK (or that’s what it felt like at the time) trying to find the elusive Tracy Island for our son, and yes we even attempted the Blue Peter make your own model. I’m sure every parent up and down the country can relate to Coco Pinchard’s dilemma to track down that must-have toy of the year. What follows is a frantic search that involves some very hilarious scenes, every time Coco is within reach of getting her hands on Tracy Island, it’s snatched away from her, and it’s these scenes that had me crying with laughter.

The characters are all mad as a box of frogs, but how I loved them from Ethel, Coco’s mother-in-law, (who provides a wealth of comic moments) to Coco herself, the dialogue between her and Ethel alone makes for a hilarious read. There is much to love about this novella, the characters, the dialogue and the comedy of errors make Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story a brilliant and very funny festive read, one that makes for that “feel good” feeling. I must mention what a versatile and talented author Robert Bryndza is, his crime thrillers are one of my favourite series ever, but do you want to know something? I’m definitely going to buy the box set of Coco Pinchard, as although crime thrillers will always be my first go to reads, I truly enjoyed every minute of my foray into Rom Com and the wacky world of Coco Pinchard.

P.S. I loved the fact that all though this novella is considered to be a Rom Com there wasn’t any heart and flowers or sickly sweet moments, it’s more Com than Rom which suited me just fine

Another fun read from author Robert Bryndza featuring Coco Pinchard. This is a fun series and a light relief to much of the more serious subjects I enjoy reading. Good characters, lots of laughs and fun plots.

Another Christmas read in March, oh well. The year is 1992 and the must have toy is the Thunderbirds Tracy Island. The children want them but not quite as much as their parents who are eager to please. Although the popularity has made the toy scarce Coco Pinchard is desperate to obtain the Tracy Island toy and nothing will stand in her way. With day’s running out it is getting more and more difficult to track one down for her four-year-old son Rosencrantz. Lots of fun and games make this a very entertaining read with plenty of laugh out loud moments.

I never cease to be amazed by the versatility of author Robert Bryndza, he not only writes top class thrillers but also a funny series like Coco Pinchard.

Although this is book 5 in the Coco Pinchard series it’s actually a prequel and so can be read as a standalone Christmas novella. Even if you’ve not read any of the series you will appreciate the humour of the situation here as Coco attempts to make sure her son has the best Christmas ever!

Now every parent dreads it being the year that their child really, REALLY wants the must have toy that Christmas. I have fond memories (NOT!) of dashing to Argos late one Christmas Eve as they had had a Barbie VW Beetle returned that day and my child had told everyone it was the only gift she wanted from Santa that year. And don’t even start me with the must have toy this year (Hatchimals anyone? ANYONE?!?!) because doesn’t every parent want their child to explode with joy on Christmas morning?

So back in good old 1992 the UK went mad for the Thunderbirds Tracy Island and I will always remember Blue Peter for trying to come to the rescue of parents up and down the country with a plan to “build your own”. And it looks like that may be the only option available to Coco after her many near misses with a real life Tracy Island. Some of the funniest scenes in this novella are of Coco desperately trying to find her son his perfect gift, only for it to be snatched away at the very last minute. Honestly, I was giggling constantly throughout this extremely funny lead up to Christmas Day for poor Coco.  Most of the best lines go to Ethel, her mother-in-law, but a few other snippets that had me practically crying with laughter were the encounter with the Sylvanian families lady (my daughter still thinks she had a deprived childhood as she was the only one of her friends not to have a little cottage full of miniature woodland creatures!) and the ashtray comment!!

I love the fact that Robert Bryndza can turn his hand to both crime thrillers and comedy, his writing style adapts perfectly to fit whichever voice he is using. I adore the Coco series of books and often recommend them to friends looking for a hilarious feel good series to follow especially if they are fans of the Shopaholic series or Bridget Jones. This Christmas prequel is quirky, very funny and highly entertaining. I loved it so much that I downloaded his other Christmas novella, A Very Coco Christmas, as soon as I had finished it. These books will definitely make you forget all your Christmas holiday stresses! And if you haven’t discovered Coco Pinchard yet then this is the perfect introduction and I guarantee you will love her and her madcap life as much as I do.

I am a huge Coco Pinchard fan and have read the whole series. If you haven’t read them then all I can say is that you are really missing out. Fear not if you haven’t read the others as even though this is the fifth book in the series it easily reads as a stand alone, just be prepared that once read, you will be racing off to buy the rest as they really are that good.

What a brilliant story line. As a parent you will totally be able to relate to Coco in this novella. Every year there is a new must have toy that all the children seem to go mad over. As a parent at Christmas time, we are under some major pressure to full fill our little cherubs Santa list.

Poor Coco no matter how many times she is within reach of full filling her sons wish, it is snatched away from her. The pressure is really piling up and not only does she have the toy to worry about she also has Christmas to arrange in readiness for her family and friends coming round.

The star as always in these books is Ethel the mother in law. She will have you howling with laughter. I love Coco but Ethel never fails to put a huge grin on my face. The author certainly knows how to create much loved characters that us readers can not get enough of.

Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story is a brilliantly funny festive read. It takes a humorous look at the pressures of shopping and family that Christmas always seems to bestow on us. If you want a realistic laugh out loud read with the most wonderful characters, then this an absolute must read.

Another fun read from Robert Bryndza!

Coco is back! It’s just before Christmas in 1992 and four year old Rosencrantz only wants one thing, Tracy Island. The problem is so does every other kid, but Coco is determined to make it happen for her son. With a less than helpful husband, an overbearing mother-in-law, and a series of wacky events, she’s got her work cut out for her.

Coco Princhard’s Must-Have Toy Story is a fun festive novella with lots of Bryndza-antics. A perfect light and easy read for the stressful holidays, complete with the timeless message on the importance of family and friends (and Tracy Island, of course).

After reading Miss Wrong and Mr Right, I was more than thrilled to bump Coco Princhard’s Must-Have Toy Story to the top of my TBR. Robert has a way of creating larger than life characters that are totally believable and putting them in over the top situations that are equally believable to create laugh out loud stories. I challenge you to read his books with a straight face :)

This is the fifth Coco book and although you don’t need to read the other’s first, I would suggest at least grabbing the first book before reading Must-Have Toy Story. You won’t get lost, but being such a short read, you may find it more humourous if you build a relationship with Coco and her friends first.

A great big thank you to Robert Bryndza for offering me an ARC of Coco Princhard’s Must-Have Toy Story in exchange for my honest review!

This is a short novella that introduces us to Coco (AKA Karen). I knew Bryndza wrote crime thrillers (which I plan to read at some point!) but did not know he also wrote some chick-lit/romantic comedies! Needless to say I jumped at the chance to read it. This is my first Bryndza novel and I really enjoyed it!

A Very Coco Christmas is a great introduction to Coco or would be a great ‘look back’ at her earlier life if you already know her. I personally want to read the whole series now! I can tell Coco will be a character I will enjoy reading with the crazy adventures she is bound to go on!

This short story takes place in 1985 and she has just finished her first semester of college and goes back home for Christmas…. Christmas can be a crazy time of year for everyone and chaos ensues for Coco: She can really find herself in some ‘interesting’ situations! You will need to read this one to know what I mean! There is even a turkey in this story…. And he has a NAME!

If you are a fan of chick lit and fun yet crazy in a good way stories, give Coco a try! You will be sure to enjoy it!

As with Robert Bryndza’s FANTASTIC Christmas novella from last year, A Very Coco Christmas, we are once again whizzing back in time to get a snippet of life for Coco and family, this time during the Christmas of 1992.
When we become reacquainted with the marvellous Coco, things aren’t going exactly to plan. She is having a tough time settling in to her teaching role at St Dukes, especially once the head teacher (otherwise known as ‘The Ripper’) starts to make life difficult.
Coco’s home life isn’t much better either. Her husband Daniel doesn’t seem to want to do anything (well, except watch Sons and Daughters) and her troublesome mother-in-law, Ethel, is permanently round their house.
Then there’s Coco’s biggest problem of all. The impossible mission to somehow acquire this years must-have Christmas toy, Tracy Island, for her four year old son Rosencrantz. Coco is determined not to let Rosencrantz down…After all, it’s only a toy – surely it can’t be that difficult to get hold of? Right? Right….?
Bribery, tears, fights and 6am queuing outside Hamley’s follow as Coco and her family attempt to do ANYTHING in order to get hold of the elusive Tracy Island…

Coco Pinchard is one of my own personal heroes so when I found out that Robert Bryndza (who happens to be my official favourite-author-in-the-whole-world-ever) was releasing a Coco Pinchard novella it really did feel as though Christmas had come early.
There’s always a certain amount of expectation when I read one of Robert Bryndza’s novels and I love that he never lets me down. Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story lived up to all of my expectations and more (And it made me chortle with laughter numerous times.) It was perfect – warm, hilarious, exciting and more festive than a sack full of mince pies.

As expected I love becoming reacquainted with Coco and her wonderful family. They are as bonkers and dysfunctional as ever and an absolute joy to read about. Four year old Rosencrantz was adorable (I especially loved his wise man song), Coco’s friend Chris was as flamboyant as ever (I LOVED the whole Disney thing with his new boyfriend Benji!) and of course, the legendary Ethel was still just as…erm…legendary (I’m talking showing her pants on the central reservation.) I love this woman so much. I’d even go so far as to say she is one of my favourite fictional characters ever. Her one-liners are just pure gold. It was also great to meet Marika and the extremely handsome-sounding Tom Wednesday.

Robert Bryndza has this magical way of making his characters so very real and believable (whilst being completely crazy at the same time). His writing is a dream to read and his novels are just so much fun. If I was told I could only read one set of books for the rest of my life then I would choose Coco’s hilarious tales. (Can I have two? I’d have to sneak Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic books in too, of course) But that truly is a testament to just how much I love Robert’s books.

Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story will undoubtedly resonate with frazzled parents everywhere who are desperately trying to get hold of this years ‘must-have’ present. Therefore, it’s the perfect antidote to Christmas madness. Kick off your shoes, grab a mug (or four in Ethel’s case) of mulled wine and laugh your festive socks off with this brilliant addition to the Coco Pinchard series.

Plus HOW gorgeous is that cover? Robert’s covers always look amazing but this one is especially perfect. It compliments the whole story so well.

Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story is probably one of the best Christmas presents you could ever give (who needs a Tracy Island!?)

Very humorous new ebook in the Coco Pinchard collection. I stumbled across Coco as a new ebook reader and quickly fell in love with the humour, and actions of Coco and the other characters. These are well written by the Author and easy to get gripped into. I would happily read Dozens of more. This book tells the tale of Coco trying to juggle life and getting the most wanted Christmas toy for a 4 year old Rosencrantz. This book serves to explain the beginning of her friendship with Marika. A fabulous Christmas tale that people can enjoy, laugh at and identify with. With all the fantastic characters such as Ethel making this laugh out loud funny ebook a must read for any fan of chick lits or humorous books. I advise everyone to start your coco journey today awaiting the general release of this new boom. And to the author keep them coming I would love to know more about the antics of this bunch of characters.

Another laugh out loud offering from the fabulous Robert Bryndza. This is a prequel to the Coco Pinchard series and once again, Rob has nailed it with a huge amount of humour and a fantastic story! For a novella, this is packed full of fun and Rob has fitted in a lot of story! We meet Coco when her son is 4 years old and wanting the must-have toy of the year for Christmas. We find out how she meets her friend,Marika - a key character in the other Coco books. We also see just how far Coco will go to get what she wants!!
I absolutely loved it! Takes me back to Christmas's gone by.....Rob certainly writes extremely good books, but not only that, he puts you right there in the moment!
I have totally enjoyed the Coco books, and this one is brilliant! If you are not yet a reader of these, please, please do! You will definitely have a smile on your face and a place in your heart for Coco when you have finished!

Absolutely loved this book! Read it in one sitting. As usual Robert Bryndza delivers a witty, well researched novel, matching fiction with real life events which can stir up forgotten memories. Roberts characters are funny, desperate, annoying and lovable all in one go. Being an avid Coco Pinchard fan already, by the end of the first page I was drawn back into her family and all the mad capers they get up to. It brings together the relationships between the characters we have come to know and love in his other novels (which I also highly recommend!). This heart warming, fun novel fulfills all you have come to expect from the author and glad to say, yet again, he doesn't disappoint. Don't be worried if you have not been introduced to Coco and her family yet, this will capture your imagination and leave you wanting to know more.

Step back in time once more to find out how Coco and Marika first met. And then join Coco in the seasonal, parental nightmare of trying to get your child the latest must have toy on the market, along with every other parent on the planet.

Fans of Coco will be delighted with Robert Bryndza's latest addition to the the Coco Pinchard series. His consistent writing style, vivid characters and comedic delivery are a real Christmas treat.

Robert Bryndza does it yet again. I'd just about managed to get over the withdrawal symptoms I had after finishing the last 'Coco' novel and he produces another 'fix'. And what a brilliant high it was. Laugh out loud right from the start to the very end and, as always, unputdownable! It was wonderful to spend a few hours in the company of 'old friends', especially in the run up to their family Christmas.

If you haven't read any of the adventures of Coco Pinchard, then do yourself a favour; buy them all, put your feet up and be prepared to be tickled pink. Robert Bryndza has a wicked sense of humour, a truly amazing talent for writing comedy and creates over-the-top (but totally believable) characters that will have you in stitches. Great work Robert - more please!

Belly laughing within the first few pages of any book tells you that, whether you're a dedicated fan or a newbie to the author, you're certainly in for one hell of ride...

Love, laughter, disasters, family, arguments.....this is what everyone's Christmas's are about..... Not only has Rob had me relating to similar scenarios in my own 'christmas time' life but has left me wanting more. More. MORE!

From the fabulously timed one liners, to the hilariously written situations CoCo seems to get herself into all over the must have kids toy this next installment of the CoCo series is another reason rob is fast becoming one of my fave authors....

I stumbled across Coco by accident in one of those ebook offers emails, and I'm so glad I did. I love all the Coco Pinchard books and the other books that Robert has written. They are so easy to read and he makes the characters so real, you just fall in love with them all. I have been asked on numerous occasions on my lunch break at work "what am I laughing at" and I usually reply oh it's just another of Ethel's witty one liners.

I can't wait for more adventures with Cokes

Coco is back! A fabulous Christmas tale with loads of laugh out loud moments. The characters are well developed and as hysterical as ever. The story follows Coco's plight to get a gift for her son Rosencrantz and the places and people they meet to try and do it. It also explains how Marika and Coco first became friends. Rob's writing is fantastic and this is a really warm hearted story that will put you in the mood for Christmas......unless you want a Tracy island!

Understanding my mother at Christmas

Not until reading this sweet, funny and touching book, did I understand the things my mother did and they way she acted at Christmas. My mother was a war bride from the UK and times were hard for my parents after the war was over. She's been gone for 20 +years, but I remember her doing many crazy things to see that we kids had that must have toy. Thanks Mr. Brendza for teaching a 67yr old boy why mothers do what they do at Christmas.

I loved this book the minute I started reading it, Coco is one of my all time favourite characters. Nothing in this new (old) chapter of her life disappointed. All the familiar characters were there. As much as I love Coco, Ethel is a close second. Robert has a brilliant way with words and I look forward to the next book.

This was a refreshing read from what I’ve been reading lately. Usually a bit to early for my Christmas reads I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Coco is a hard working mum. When her four year old son Rosencrantz requests a Tracy Island toy for Christmas her and her family must do everything they can to get the little boy his Santa toy.

This story was written for 1992. I had to remind myself that mobile phones and internet was not as popular as it is now.

This story reminded me of when my daughter was little. My mum, sister and brother queued up from the early hours to get some newly released character toys for my daughter for Christmas. Reading this brought so many memories back to me.

This truly is a feel good refreshing fun read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will be reading more from this author in the future.

Oh my goodness this book was funny and like a flashback to my younger years!

I remember my mum and dad having to get Tracy Island for my brother and my neighbours sneaking one round in a black bag as they had got two!! And I remember watching the Blue Peter episode too where Anthea Turner made her version - just fabulous!

I have read all of the Coco Pinchard books and she has to be one of my favourite comedy characters - the writing style in this one was spot on as always and I loved every page - 5 stars from me!!

What can I say?! I absolutely loved it!

“Coco Pinchard’s Must-Have Toy Story” is the second title I have read by author Robert Bryndza but my first adventure with Coco. And what a fun ride this was!!

In this instalment, Coco who is the cool teacher that headmasters love to hate, takes you with her on her quest to get THE Christmas present of the year for her son Rosencrantz (Yes, I know…interesting name :), there must be quite a story behind it.) , the one and only “Tracy Island” playset!! All Thunderbirds fans will know what I am talking about here.

You would think that The Thunderbirds being so popular, finding a playset would be doddle.

Well, not quite!!

From blackmail to Black Friday-like mayhem, and Disney Christmas cruises to nativity play fiasco, you’ll see what length Coco is prepared to go to, to get the perfect present for her son.

All this happening in a somewhat nostalgic UK, pre-Eurostar, pre-Internet setting, where things were just done the old fashioned way, however not that fast in the past.

I highly recommend this witty and hilarious lovely Christmas tale.

In 2021, I read 3 of the Coco Pinchard series by Robert Bryndza, and enjoyed them very much. So yesterday on an impulse I bought the only one that was still missing. I thought it would be a nice way to bring the year and the series to a close.

What is it about Nativity plays that makes them so unforgettable in books (and even television) when they go off-script? Remember that scene from A Prayer for Owen Meany where Owen embodies the Christ Child? Or that episode of "The Vicar of Dibley" where Alice Tinker Horton plays an actually pregnant Virgin Mary? Or the Charlie Brown Christmas special where Sally, playing an announcing angel, embarrasses herself by saying "Hockey stick" instead of "Hark!"? Well, this book has a scene which puts them all in the shade!

But in spite of that, this was a short, pleasant read and a nice way to finish off the year.

Happy 2022 to one and all!

I know what I will be gifting all my friends for Christmas this year! I can’t remember the last time I laughed this much reading a story! (It must have been the last Coco story I read)! It was so much fun to go back in time and read about the whole family together and to find out how Coco and Marika became friends. Rosencrantz is a little boy and he has sent a letter to Santa telling him that he wants a certain toy. As a parent, we all understand the need to fulfill our child’s Christmas wish. As usual Coco tries her hardest but continually fails. You will have so much fun reading about her escapades. This is a novella and you can easily read it in one afternoon (I did). You can read this as your first Coco book or at any point in between. I don’t feel that it is necessary to read this book in the order of publication as it is a look back in time and it doesn’t have any spoilers contained in it. I can’t wait for the next Coco adventure!

This book was another good Coco Pinchard story. It's short and sweet and shows you how far Coco and her loved ones go to get Rosencrantz that toy. Little Rosencrantz is adorable and sings the best songs lol. I really liked this book. I loved getting back to these characters (Ethel my #1) and I can't wait for the next installment in this series.

So I do not know just yet about getting the must-have toy, but after this, I am dreading it! lol. This novella reminded me of Arnie’s film Jingle all the way! I could perfect envisage the pandemonium in the shops. It is brutal!!! It is also quite nostalgic, especially as I may never know the “thrill” of this, with internet shopping, it just is not the same!

The escapades that Coco gets up to, all to get a Tracy Island is hilarious! To be honest I would want a Tracy Island too!

Aside from the manic tribulations, we meet Marika for the first time, and the start of the trio being friends!

Another book where Ethel steals the show…and the front cover of the newspaper! In a layby on the way to Dover, I wish I knew which one as a current resident of Dover I want to go and find it! So two books and my hometown and my new hometown are mentioned!

Like all books in this series, I have chuckled a lot! All these books are on point and written beautifully and the dialogue is spot on. I really can not believe that my time on this tour is over! I have a serious hangover from Coco, but the saving grace is around the rumour mill is that might be another Coco book in the works OMG!!!!

If you have not read any of these books in the series, you really do need to change this straight away and check out these books. You need Coco in your life, you need her friends and family, and most importantly you need Ethel in your life! This series is full of trial and tribulations, a LOT of laughter, love and Coco! But they are most definitely a feel-good book and will provide so much joy in your life.
