Disclaimer, I know the author and I am happy to see her on this path of self publishing.
I wasn't fully drawn into this book. It started off slow and just didn't hook me in. But, the main character was interesting and the world had a lot of thought put into it. I could see the potential of the story.
I liked the story most of the time. There was a bit of an issue with spelling and grammar throughout the book, though, and the main character kept on breaking down into tears which was really annoying I have to admit, but most of the other stuff was pretty good I think. You might like it. There's elementals and a dragon and stuff.
Opening disclaimer: The author is a friend of mine, though our friendship has in no way influenced this review (I even bought the book myself without her knowledge!)
It took me a while to get into this one. I would go so far as to say the beginning struggled to keep my attention, but once things got going, I found it quite enjoyable. Definitely a unique (to me, at least) spin on a story I’ve seen before (though I hate to call it a story I’ve seen before, as it seems a little harsh – I’m mostly at a loss for an alternate phrasing, so please don’t take that too deep to heart). This does need some work and an edit or two, but it’s not so terrible that things get lost within the errors. Nothing was so bad as to pull me out of the world or give me reason to pause and re-read to decipher, in any case. The characters are distinct and likeable. They feel like people I could encounter while walking down the street (well, assuming I lived in the same world as they do, that is), and thus are very real. My only complaint is that there’s a couple scenes that are a bit character introduction heavy, and I quickly lost track of who was who. Though it was a tad distracting at the time, when these characters appear later, it didn’t feel as if I’d ever forgotten them, so it was a problem well remedied. Overall, I look forward to seeing how this progresses in the rest of the series!
