A Brief History of Cuba - From Columbus to the 21st Century

Rate this book
With this brief look at the main events, divided into three periods --colonial, neocolonial and revolutionary-- we shall attempt to familiarize our reader in a very general way with the long process of the formation of our nationality.

Here, too, you will find the main geographical characteristics of the island, its 14 provinces, and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

This was fine. With an emphasis on "brief", this history book does a good job on quickly catching the reader up to speed so that they can learn more in-depth about the Cuban Revolution and its revolutionary figures. It provides a very quick overview of many events in a very limited number of pages, which may serve as jumping off points for more in-depth learning. The other reviews on Goodreads have written this off as entirely propaganda, which may have some truth to it. However, many American or Western texts on Cuba also read as propaganda. It's very difficult to find unbiased accounts of such a polarizing history. This is a good text to read in conjuction with others, to help give a more well-rounded account of the different sides of history.

While I was fairly interested in learning a general history of the peoples and culture of Cuba, the translation of this material is a strain to read.

It's very redundant and excessively wordy, with some odd misuses of grammar.

It's a shame because, as I said, I am interested in learning this information, but reading this was more work than it should have been!
