First Case of Beers

Rate this book
James Alfred Biersovich, former sportswriter, now head of security at the upscale La Scala department store in Minneapolis, is ready for the Christmas shopping season to begin. He thinks. It's also 1999 and when "Beers" gets called to scenes of mischief and mayhem around the store, he realizes there's more than a little Y2K craziness going on. Doing double-duty as the store's Santa doesn't help. But with a little help from his "friends"--and the Scalabrino clan--can he solve his first case and tie it up in a big red bow?

First let me say I read at least 2 to 3 books a week and not a huge fan of this genre. usually it is all blow stuff up, killing, drugs etc...first case of beers had intruge coupled with humor and not all alpha male. All i can say is WOW. I may have to add this genre into my reading list and definitely will put Mr. Larose in the authors to follow.
I was intrigued and thought for sure i knew the "who dun it" in the first 5 chapters. Well PM Larose had me second guessing throughout the book. One moment i felt, " i got this" the next I was "maybe not." in the end I was surprised. Which is always great to give you just enough twist but still in the realm of possible.(I hate the "Bobby Ewing in the shower" kind of twist.) The honest humor coupled with the intrigue kept me from putting the book down.
I would love to hear it in Auble format with all of the diverse accents. Great lighter read that made me search for more from Mr. Larose. I did find the"yat" accent slowed me down a bit but in the end I give the book a 5. Keep them coming P.M. Larose. Looking forward to the next Beers adventure.
* One of the best lines in the book - "She had that come-hither look, and I didn't know where hither was, but everyone wanted to go there" awesome. still chuckling over it.

The only reason I gave this book two stars (and not one) is because I actually finished it - much to my eventual dismay. I kept wanting to put it down but it was, for some reason and in some odd way, just entertaining enough to keep me reading. Quirky characters or something--I don't know. But in the end I found myself wishing that I had put it aside when I first had the notion. Oh well! -JS

"There’s a lot of action in LaRose’s debut novel, some laughs and only a few false notes, such as Beers’ behavior after his girlfriend tells him she’s been threatened. But LaRose appears to be onto something with Beers and his crew."

A fun romp through Minneapolis during the holidays. Really enjoyed the story line, especially the local landmarks. Looking forward to his next book.

Only reason I picked this up was because the author is from Louisiana. Just a very light mystery. Not much substance. Set in "Minny Sota" so you understand.
