I'm rather intimately acquainted with this book as I proofread the fourth edition. It gives a great overview of Christianity in Japan. Other books go into more depth on each of the topics dealt with in this book, but I'm not aware of any book that brings them all together in one volume.

It begins by giving brief overviews of the history of Japan and Japanese society before looking at the relationship between Christianity and Japan. It describes the history of Christianity in Japan and examines the evidence (which I find rather unconvincing) for the possibility of a much earlier arrival of Christianity in Japan than is generally accepted. It then looks at the interaction between Christianity and Japanese society.

Overall, this is an excellent book for anyone who is interested about Christianity in Japan.
