Rate this book
When you feel a nudge to pray, what will you do?

Most of us have felt it at one time or another: that unexplained prompting in our hearts to stop and pray for a friend, a loved one, or even a stranger. Sometimes we are even awakened from a deep sleep with an even deeper need to go to God in prayer. Where do those urges come from? Are they truly from God? Or are they merely stray thoughts? And if we respond in prayer, are others’ lives affected at all?

In Called to Pray, Linda Evans Shepherd shares dozens of inspiring true stories of people who have heeded God’s call to pray and the astonishing results of those impromptu prayers. Through accounts of people being protected from harm and rescued from danger, of needs being met and hearts being encouraged, you’ll see that God is involved in an active and dynamic relationship with us—and that we can be part of his plan to bless others.

If you have ever wondered if prayer has any real effect or doubted that God communicates with us personally, this heart-stirring book will amaze, inspire, and equip you to respond to those holy promptings.

My Review:
When we look at it through our earthly eyes, we see that prayer is the only real power that we have. Interceding for someone is so very important. Your prayers for that individual and their situation could mean life or death for them. What would we do if no one wasn't willing to intercede for others. This world is already a terrible place but without the hope of Jesus Christ and of God changing things around we would truly be lost.

The author collected stories that prove just how powerful this prayer thing is and how our Father can turn everything around in an instant just based on faith alone. We have a Father that truly wants the best for all of us and its proven in the stories the author shares. Very inspiring and encouraging for those of us with unanswered prayers.

Uplifting

This book is filled with many instances of answered prayers that are encouraging. While not all prayers are answered with a yes they are answered. This book came to me at the time I needed it most. I highly recommend it.

Awesome stories just wish they showed the “no” to prayers. This makes prayer seem like it is always a yes yes yes and you always get what you want. And it is all flowers and daisies with prayer.

Linda Evans Shepherd in her new book, "Called To Pray" published by Revell gives us Astounding Stories of Answered Prayer.

From the Back Cover: When you feel a nudge to pray, what will you do?

Most of us have felt it at one time or another: that unexplained prompting in our hearts to stop and pray for a friend, a loved one, or even a stranger. Sometimes we are even awakened from a deep sleep with an even deeper need to go to God in prayer. Where do those urges come from? Are they truly from God? Or are they merely stray thoughts? Linda Evans Shepherd knows that all of us have that moment when The Holy Spirit gives us a burden to pray for someone and for a specific period of time. Ms. Shepherd begins the book with the story of Jack who forgot to make a fuel check before he took off from Miami to Fort Pierce. After a short period of time in the air he quickly realized his mistake, he was going down. The problem was there was no safe place to land. However at that moment a parishioner got the burden to pray for Jack. Suddenly a freshly plowed field appeared and Jack was safely able to land the plane with no damage and he walked away. The parishioner prayed at exactly the moment that Jack was in great need. His ordeal lasted a half hour, the parishioner prayed for the same length of time. Ms. Shepherd provides us lots of stories like this and at the end of each story she also provides us a prayer we can pray. The book is divided into ten parts: 1: Called to Pray for Protection, 2: Called To Pray for Rescue, 3: Called To Pray for Needs, 4: Called To Pray for Souls, 5: Called To Pray for Breakthrough, 6: Called To Pray for Guidance, 7: Called To Pray for Miraculous Wonders, 8: Called To Pray for Encouragement, 9: Called To Pray for Trust and Faith and 10: Called To Pray for Others. Prayer works! Sometimes we forget and we don't pray as we should especially when we feel impressed to pray. Ms. Shepherd has given us a book that reminds us of the critical role we play. And she shows us the results of our prayers. This is a book that you will refer back to again and again. It will lift up your spirits when you feel empty or low. A great resource!

Called to Pray: Astounding Stories of Answered Prayer was written by award-winning author and popular speaker Linda Evans Shepherd, and published by Revell in the later portion of 2015. As the title suggests, this book is filled to overflowing with examples of dynamic, unexpected, and miraculous answers to prayer in the lives of ordinary people. What did all these people have in common? They simply had the faith to heed God’s call to pray, and witnessed extraordinary events in their lives as a result.

Without question, this book is an inspiration and an invitation to pray more often, for more people, and in every situation that we find ourselves. Conveniently divided into ten sections with titles such as “Called to Pray for Protection”, “Called to Pray for Needs”, “Called to Pray for Encouragement”, etc., the book holds dozens of stories that bring the power of prayer to life in vivid detail. My personal favorites were the divine appointments that could clearly only be orchestrated by God. As an added benefit, a suggested personal prayer relating to the topic closes each story, and allows readers to incorporate that topic into their own lives.

With the first few stories of this book, I felt uplifted and inspired. As I continued farther through the pages, however, something began to bother me... Yes, many of the anecdotes still continued to leave me in awe of God’s perfect plan. But story after happy story closed with a picture-perfect ending. Although there were exceptions to this pattern, for the most part the pray-ers ended up receiving the answer they expected immediately - or else an even better option than they had hoped for. Hurricanes calmed until a family could escape. Cancer-filled bodies healed. Broken marriages were restored. As someone who is going through a very difficult portion of life, I know that this isn’t always the way God works. What about the faithful men and women who pray without fail, waiting day after day, month after month, and year after year for their prayers to be answered and their dreams to be fulfilled? And even then, sometimes the hurricane kills, the cancer patient dies, and the marriage falls apart. Are those people doing something wrong? Is that why God doesn’t answer their prayers the way he does the people in the stories of Called to Pray? I don’t believe so, but these are the questions that arose in my mind as I read through the book. Of course I understand this was unlikely the intent of Linda Evans Shepherd, and perhaps my questions would take another entire book to answer. Or perhaps only God himself truly knows the answer. In any case, while this was definitely not a bad book, it did not quite serve its purpose in my personal life and situation. You will have to decide whether or not it will in yours.

There are many non-fiction prayer books written and published. "Called to Pray" by Linda Evans Shepherd is one of the special ones. This book is extremely inspiring. In each chapter are personal experiences about someone in some sort of struggle. For example, there is a coughing and choking incident, a weather catastrophe, money problems, wedding problems and accidents. In these stories, there is a person who has this strong urge to pray for the one in trouble. It is like God or God's Holy Spirit personally taps them on the shoulder and says "pray now!"

I liked these personal examples. I also liked the petitions at the end of the chapters. The prayers seem like ones I have needed in the past or might need in the future. The prayers are short. Although not lengthy, these prayers are also examples of praises to God, and they also point to our weaknesses, places in our lives that still need pruning. In one prayer, the person asks for God to use them in the lives of other people. Since I am one who likes many tiny bits of scriptural references in my book, this book is perfect. There are scripture references at the beginning of the chapter and throughout the chapter.

Since I liked the Bible translation used in Call to Pray, I wanted to know which Bible Linda Evans Shepherd used while writing the book. It took a while to find the translation. I wish the Bible translation had been easier to find and not in such small print. However, the Bible translation chosen made old scriptures look new and were far more easier to understand than the ones written in my present Bible. I am reminded of Romans 9:27-28. It is in the chapter entitled Name Tag Prayer.

I am left thinking of the Introduction. In Colossians 4:2, I spotted my idea of a three step plan: devotion, watchfulness and thankfulness. I am grateful to have been given this wonderful book of prayer with so many exciting examples of answered prayer. It has been a special gift during the Advent season. www.Call2Pray.com,

The power of prayer has such a far reaching influence, yet it is one of the most overlooked resources in a Christian’s life. How many times have you felt the prompting to pray for a person or situation and ignore it? What blessing or need went unfulfilled because you didn’t? This book will certainly make you think about those times and being obedient to urging of the Holy Spirit.
I found this book very encouraging, as it reminded me once again of how God is always watching over and caring for us. I found it inspiring and exciting to see how He uses our prayers to bring about wonderful and amazing events. These are true stories of how the Lord guided others to pray unbeknownst to them how important that prayer was to the care and protection of the person He brought to mind.
I am remembered of one such time in my life. My husband was 37 and had suffered a heart attack. They were bypassing 3 bypasses he had done at 25. The surgery was long and a large number of people were in the waiting room with me. Everyone was visiting. Suddenly I had a powerful need to pray for him. I asked everyone to join me. I looked at the clock to see what time it was. Finally the doctor came out and told me my husband was fine and the outcome was far better than he had expected. Then he said, “Oh, there was one thing. When we took him off of the heart lung machine and shocked his heart, it wouldn’t start. We tried 3 times and were very worried, then the 3rd time it started.” I asked him what time that happened. And the time he shared was the exact time I had been felt the overpowering need to pray for him.
This book is such a blessing. It made me happy to read the stories of God’s miraculous provision, and to always remember He does the same for me.

“Many of us often are asleep to the idea that God wants to communicate with us personally, and as a result, we sometimes ignore what seem to be stray thoughts or concerns about friends, family, or situations. When worries arise, we often believe they are nothing more than the random musings of our imaginations, never awakening to the possibility that God is actually calling us to pray.”
(Linda Evans Shepherd)

This is our wake-up call.

There are times when each of us have needs pressing on our hearts. We are called to pray and know specifically how to pray.

Then there are those times, we feel urged to pray without certainty of the need, or knowing why.

In her book, Called to Pray: Astounding Stories of Answered Prayer, Linda Evans Shepherd explores these very times. How are we to respond when urged to pray? Do we pray without hesitancy, with the assurance God will be active and quick to respond?

Called to Pray is a collection of stories about circumstances in which prayer was a dire need. Each story shares the astonishing outcome as a result of prayer.

The book is set up in chapters by which prayers can be found for specific situations including:

call to pray for protection
call to pray for needs
call to pray for guidance
call to pray for encouragement

Each section includes true and inspiring stories of miraculous answers to prayer. This book will impact in two ways:

While in a season of waiting, you will find hope as you remember the ways God has answered prayers.
You will find yourself encouraged to pray as you take notice of the prompting of God.

This book is a wonderful read for when we encounter a season of doubt. It will infuse your heart with faith to keep on praying. Each story will encourage us all to pay heed to those times we find ourselves awakened to pray.

Called to Pray by Linda Evans Shepherd could also be called Inspired to Pray. This book is about answered prayers. Reading and hearing about God answering another person's prayer is a powerful testimony and motivator for the rest of us.

After reading this book, you will remember to "trust in the Lord with all your heart" like it says in Proverbs 3:5. The author wants us to pay attention to the promptings of God to pray for ourselves and others. She created chapters to show us that we are called to pray for protection, rescue, needs, souls, breakthrough, guidance, miraculous wonders, encouragement, trust & faith and others.

You pray and trust God to handle the rest. He does not always answer in the way you expect, but His answer is perfect. I like the story of Todd, the college student who had a loan payment of $300 due soon. He remembered the testimonies of others who received money in the mailbox just in time to meet the need. So he thought God would do the same for him. Did God provide for him? Yes! He gave him a paint job that paid the exact amount he needed. It would have been easier to just receive in it his mailbox like others, but God answered his prayer. The story was an example of asking for something and expecting to receive it a certain way. Then God throws a curve ball to answer your need differently than you expected.. His ways are not our ways.

You can read this book straight through in order like you would a fiction book. You can also read any prayer story out of order for just a few minutes. It is a great way to start or end your day. I recommend this book for yourself and as a gift to someone else.

Linda Evans Shepherd brings us a book of stories about answered prayers. This is a wonderful book that tells the story of how individuals were called to pray for something or someone specifically and the miracle of those answered prayers. She includes scripture passages and thoughts that might help when you are called to pray.

This is book is 199 pages in length and not something that has to be read at one setting, but can be. She has written ten chapters:

Called to Pray for Protection

Called to Pray for Rescue

Called to Pray for Needs

Called to Pray for Souls

Called to Pray for Breakthrough

Called to Pray for Guidance

Called to Pray for Miraculous Wonders

Called to Pray for Encouragement

Called to Pray for Truth and Faith

Called to Pray for Others.

Each chapter gives us a several stories where a person had an overwhelming need to pray for someone or something and each story shows how the prayer was answered. It points out that you don't always know why get the urge or even what's going on just that you need to pray. This is God intervening on behalf of someone else. These stories show that prayer will strengthen you lives and draw you closer to God.

Max Lucado reminds us, "when you speak, Jesus hears. And when Jesus hears, the world is changed. All because someone prayed." What a powerful and true statement that is. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. It will draw you in and give you areas to reflect on.

Christian sometimes don’t see the changes when they pray about particular situation or about person, and when God wakes them to pray, they wonder how it’s going to affect specific prayer request. Because they don’t see what happens when they pray on God’s request, they often refuse, ignoring the call and back to their lives and their tasks.

Linda Evans collected encouraging yet risky and dangerous stories about pray in actions. With His mighty prayer warrior, God saves the lives and changes the grave outcomes into the miracle of the day, giving life and hope for those who is in grave danger.

God gives a nudge to pray in the hearts of His people, and if they obedient enough to pray for what ever reason and whatever situation, He moves on the behave of that prayer and fulfills of what have been asked.

Those stories encourage people of God to pray when they are waken up to pray.

Stories of answered prayers about protection, rescue, needs, salvation, breakthrough, guidance, miracles and wonders, encouragement, trust and faith, others.

I gave this a 5 because I really loved this book. It is a quick inspiring read about the power of prayer. Each of these uplifting stories will build your faith a little more as they show you how heeding to the voice of God can change people's hearts and situations. If you are in ministry and you don't know where you fit this book is a must read. Maybe you can't be on the praise team because you can't carry a tune. Or you are can't join the dance ministry because you have no rhythm. Or maybe you thought about the nursery or teaching but you really have no patience for little ones. Well this book will tell you where you can fit in perfectly. Praying for others. Why? Because we are all called to pray. It doesn't matter if you are young or old. If you are new to ministry or not. Praying is universal. So if you have ever wondered if my prayers are effective, read on. Let this book inspire you to read more, talk to God more, Pray more.

Do you think you're ever called to pray? Is praying difficult for you? Do you ever wonder if there's any use in praying? Well, this book will let you know the answer.

I am drawn to the many stories of faith in this book. I love how each story begins with a biblical verse and ends with a wonderful prayer, a prayer that you, yourself can use as well. As I was reading through, I prayed those very words because I longed to be in communication with God. When I cam across "Empty Arms", it hit home for me in many ways. The desires of my heart are known by God, and only when He abides in me and I in Him that I will feel peace in submitting them to Him.

A great book for yourself or as a gift. I truly believe this book is a blessing and I thank God for it.

I have always been a fan of books that had several stories in so that you could read one or two every once in a while and go back to it without having to remember what had happened as in a continuous story. And when the stories are true, as they are in this book; that makes it all the more interesting.

This book is set up into ten different kinds of prayer that people have been called to. Some have been for certain situations, for certain people, or even for oneself. Each story is followed by a short prayer that has something to do with the theme of the story.

The book is interesting and very encouraging. It is very encouraging to read so many stories from one book of answered prayers and also of how God moved people to pray for needs, sometimes that they knew nothing of. Although this isn't a devotional, it could be used as one since they all have a Scripture verse and prayer with each story. I highly recommend it.

This is such an amazing and inspiring book! It will encourage you to pray more often and in all circumstances!

This book is filled with beautiful stories of extraordinary situations where prayer made a huge difference. Each one is so amazing and you'll be enthralled by them. What's really wonderful is that they will inspire you to pray!

Each one starts off with a Scripture that corresponds with the story. You can see how God's Word is full of promises for each of the circumstances we find ourselves. At the end of the story, the author provides prayers for us. They are really well done and will give you the beginning point of praying your own prayers as an extension of them.

I loved this book! It has made such a difference in my prayer life and my belief. I highly recommend this book and know you will enjoy it. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a must read book for anyone. I couldn't put it down and in it has an answer to a question I have had for 44 years. What a blessing it has been to read all these answered prayers and the ability to pray for the same things in your own life once each story is complete. Linda Evans Shepherd has become one of my most beloved Authors. Now I am interested in reading all her other books. This would be a beautiful gift to anyone you love. I already knew prayer is a powerful tool and becomes a miraculous way to live your life but it was so much more powerful to see others have the same results and confirm all I know about prayer and the gift it truly is that God has given to us to use without ceasing. Let us be encouraged to become more faithful prayer warriors and we shall see the hand of God move in our lives and others everywhere. Thank you for writing this awesome book. My heart is now calmed and no longer burdened because of it.

Linda Evans Shepherd is well known for her books When You Don't Know What to Pray and Experiencing God's Presence. Both of these books reached me at a spiritual depth. This book, Called to Pray, is filled with true stories of those who have listened when God has told them to pray and what happeded as a result. These may have been prayers for protection, guidance, need or for encouragement, but each of them has been answered.

This is the book to turn to when in doubt of whether God hears or answers our prayers. The answer is Yes He does!

I found this book to be very inspirational. The book is filled with stories of how people were saved because of prayer. There is one story where a woman was going to kill herself, but heard a voice telling her not to at the same time her mother had felt the need to pray for her and did so. I really enjoyed reading this book as it taught me the power of prayer. This would be a good book for non-believers as it could teach them about the power of God and prayer.

My overall opinion on this book is I really love the inspirational stories and the results from prayer. I think this book is great for anyone because I think we all need to pray more and trust god and know that the outcome of our prayer will workout the way good intended for them to work out. This book makes you want to pray more because prayer is so important and shows that you are trusting in god that your problems will workout. The author did a awesome job writing this book and this book is a must have in your home, and a great gift for family.

I love reading books about how God answers prayers. These wonderful stories ranged from people who felt a nudge to pray for someone they knew who was in danger to the story of the woman embarrassed by her bathrobe, who didn't want anyone to see it. The bathrobe is a case of God using us in unimaginable ways. Because of that ratty robe, many people were led to the Lord!

Some days we all need something to smile about. These stories are very uplifting, and will be treasured again and again. If you've ever had the experience of being an answer to someone's prayer, you can't help but marvel at what happened, and smile at how God worked it all out.

This is an extremely inspirational book filled with short stories and scriptural promises about the power of prayer. Many of the stories thrilled my soul. How I wish for responses to some of my prayers in the fashion portrayed. But, alas, that doesn't seem to happen.

Nevertheless, it was most inspirational and worthwhile reading. It has helped to strengthen my faith and to resolve to document more of the prayer successes that I do achieve by laying issues before God.

It was wonderful collection of stories of how to pray and how prayer works. It would go well with the writings of Dutch Sheets - Intercessory Prayer. I read them faster than I should because each story has memory verse and concept behind it and prayer to go with it. The book encouraged me.
