Dear Author, Just when the clans were beginning to believe that the Monarque des Chevaux had died out, my companion and I were born and marked at birth for this honor. The clans rebelled at the news of our births. We were torn from our families and secreted away in separate locations until we were placed together as a matched/mated pair when we came of age. We hold a position of high honor as leaders of the clans. There hasn’t been a matched/mated pair for generations, and our birth has led to wars between the clans. Although there had been mated pairs of females only, male/female mates have been more common. We are the first pair of mated stallions to rule our clan. Please tell our story.
Photo Description: Two men are wearing black body suits. Where the suits end their skin is coloured black to match. Over their heads are realistic horse masks, complete with bridles. One has a slightly lighter mane. They have body harnesses around their chests and waists, which loop underneath between their legs. You can also just see the first man’s pony tail. They wear black boots to just below the knee, which are hooves at the shoe.

Living in New Zealand I'm a multi-published author of m/m romance and erotica. My preferred genres are paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy and steampunk. When not writing I can be found indulging in my other passions of cookery and wine appreciation.
A fantasy-based realm with centaurs and two men destined to rule fractured and warring clans. It's an interesting mix of Aztec ideology with ancient Greek elements. The Aztec bit should give you a clue that there is blood involved. Not graphic or horrific, but there is court intrigue and betrayal on the menu.
Ok, so I might be a little biased as I wrote the prompt and basically this story was written for me, but I still loved it. Thank you Pelaam for writing this.
In the start of the story we are dropped into what feels like an already ongoing story. That is not such a bad thing if we get bit of back story later to help out but one was not provided here. We have two men who are fated mates, but how are they fated mates? How was this decided or discovered or known? When they meet there is instant attraction which is fine but later that night or even the next day they are in deep love? They don't know each other or anything about each other. I think a few days pass or even a week or so in the story but it isn't described well so I am unsure but if it is there is not way to tell. Also the fact that there are centaurs is interesting but not really explained. Is everyone a centaur or only some people? Also if you are a centaur and in a hurry why stay human and ride a centaur if you could just transform and run to where ever yourself? Needs a little more world building fleshed out, more back story or explanation of past events I felt like I started in the middle of the story or in book 2 of a series. Last that got to me was the names of the characters, I know this is a fantasy world but so many of the names were similar and I wouldn't even begin to know how to pronounce them let alone think of how they would sound and it was distracting. A good effort and a nice idea though.
This started out so promisingly, but I lost interest before the end. It is simplistic and repetitive. How many times can you say secret tunnels? There is barely any romance or sex. Instead we have politics and plots. The characters are centaurs but nothing is done with this fact. I also thought there were too many commas and I sometimes did not know who was speaking.
The prompt is a good one: two men prophesied at birth to lead the clan in the future. Maybe I'm expecting too much: an introduction started as strangers (perhaps enemies) to lovers, love built on respect on each other and world building in fantasy setting.
Instead, they loved each other from the start, with no earlier correspondence. I don't even know if they're told since they're little about the other. It doesn't ring true for me: for a stranger you'll have expectations, since they never met.
Other characters also don't ring true: there are so many names they start to blur and they don't seem to have personality: either they're protagonist (whom will be kind, generous, loyal and other good qualities) or they're antagonist (whom will be backstabbing bastard, power hungry and full of envy). They ring hollow.
I don't understand the world building: Gyllir is a prince? How about Kappi? In the prompt, it's mentioned that they're clan leaders but it doesn't show how its hierarchy or structure: is it a kingdom with Gyllir on the top and Kappi's clan beneath? Is full of scattered clans? If you're clan leader... I don't even remember the name of the clan or what is the difference between the clan? How the power divides between the sovereign & the religion?
As for centaur form... there isn't anything beyond they could change into centaurus form and besides for , it doesn't do anything.
I like that this isn't your typical shifter story.
Gyillar has been arranged since birth to marry Kappi, a fellow centaur. Together they are to bring peace between their clans and people. Gyillar is a bit nervous, needless to say, but luckily, Kappi is not just great to look upon, but he seems like a generally awesome person. Sadly, not everyone is keen on their up and coming marriage, which is fast approaching. Even the king, Gyillar’s father is aware and fears for his life. He makes them promise no matter what, to become married and bound together.
The head priest is evil. His head is full of power and he worships a vengeful, bloodthirsty God.
I liked the story and was happy that despite things not going smoothly, at least Gyillar and Kappi are meant to be. They are in love.
There was so much going on in the first half that I struggled to get into the story. However the second half really took off! The fight scenes were excellently written and I thoroughly enjoyed the denouement of the story. I recommend giving Prophecy a try -- it is a quick read, and the culture that Pelaam describes is interesting.
Interesting melange of historical ideology and fantasy. For me there was a lack, in that the prophecy bonding these two men was never disclosed. What exactly were the signs at their births that indicated they were to fulfil the prophecy?
