A very, very nice mystery/romance with a touch of paranormal!

I really enjoyed the ambience and the demi-monde surrounding! Also the glimpse of the crude world of brothels.

Nothing that makes you gag, but still you'll cringe while reading what happened to all those poor woman that were forced in that life. No to say that all were forced, but still it was a bleak life...

The heroine is very unusual madam, but also a very capable and compassionate woman. She doesn't deny what is happening around here and doesn't do stupid things. But what I liked the best, even if it was very unusuall for women of the time, is that she doesn't deny her passions in any way or form! Very refreshing!

The hero is also an interesting character. Very conflicted and very insecure in a subtle way. But he's also honest with himself and able to recognize his errors. ... even if after some time.. :)

A touch of paranormal is also inetesting, since both have some "gifts". It is not overdone, but is nicely integrated in the ambience of the story.

Voodoo, ghosts and murder... Need I say more?

A Haunting Desire is a compelling paranormal, historical, romantic-suspense set in New Orleans in 1902. Julie Mulhern's sensuous, almost lyrical prose draws you into a world of shadows and suspense, where ghosts whisper clues and death waits around every corner. It opens with the lines: "Go to Marie Leveau's tomb. Find the woman who can tell you about voodoo. She has what you need." The pace is steady and suspenseful.

Someone is killing men in Storyville, the red light district.

Trula Bourdeaux runs the classiest whore house in town. A strong and worldly woman with a heart, she takes good care of the people who work in her establishment, but she doesn't let any man touch her body or her heart. Growing up in a long line of courtesans she believes there are rules that cannot be broken. She quotes her grandmother, "Ladies had the luxury of loving. Courtesans did not. A courtesan who fell in love was a fool."

As the violent murders draw closer to her house, she must find the murderer. Unfortunately her best chance of success involves teaming up with the drop-dead-handsome Yankee , Zeke Barnes, who's "whiskey rough" voice is "dark and tempting and forbidden." Not to mention the rest of him. He creates a hurricane of feelings within her she doesn't want to deal with. Not now. Not ever.

Zeke Barnes is the man who reaches and captures Trula's heart. He's been sent to New Orleans, because he specializes in cases involving the occult. Trula's beauty, strength and character draw him like a magnet and he can't resist her.

Neither believe they can have a future as a couple, but their love and their passion tell a different tale. The intensity of their steamy romance takes them both by surprise.

Together they set out, with the help of a few ghosts, to unravel the mystery of the murders.
Mulhern's rich language, vivid imagery and complex characters flavor a well plotted story perfectly. A great read.

My Two Favorite lines:

"Until he caught the murderer, he couldn't leave, couldn't escape this ghost infested, mosquito-ridden swamp masquerading as a city."
"There was something prowling in the approaching night, something dark and hungry."

If you like mysteries set in New Orleans like I do, you'll love Julie Mulhern's, Haunting Desire.

Sensational book that transported me to historical New Orleans--the sultry, exotic atmosphere as well as the back alley horror. A unique story line I have not encountered before, so it left me guessing and scrambling to turn the page. LOVED the voo doo and evil spirits. This is a real winner!

Come take a trip back in time to one of the most magical places there is, where magic is everyday. This author takes you to New Orleans where murder indeed is afoot and the killer seems to be not of this world. Zeke does just that investigates the unusual and he has been sent here were only a select few know the true nature of what he investigates. Landing in the middle it would seem thanks to her business Trula is too part of the investigation but will become a investigator herself. Talk about getting caught up thanks to the story and the characters this author will know how to use her magic to whisk you away to these streets to witness the passion behind the murders. You will not be able to stop until you find out all the answers with also seeing if Zeke can get the one most important thing right when it comes to love. This will certainly quench any ones hunger for suspense and romance but with the satisfaction being complete with all that will be revealed all the way until when you have turned the last page.

I really like the setting (New Orleans at the turn of the century) with a paranormal element (ghosts and voodoo). I also really like Trula. She made the most of her situation and didn't let it change her. She was kind and empathetic. She easily could have just focused on herself, but didn't. She is a madam and runs a brothel. Someone/something is killing men in the district.
Zeke was harder to like. He works for the government and specializes in the paranormal. I didn't like his treatment of Trula at first. This will be shocking to to read; but his ability to communicate sucked too (you were surprised, right?). He lost his wife and is haunted by the ghostly companion of a child who caused the accident that killed his parents (he helps).
I would have liked more with the relationship with Trula's new found brother and father (do they work on their relationship and get to know each other?). The murder mystery was also interesting, but a little bit of a let down too. The men were will murdered were not good people and would not be punished for what they did (because who cares what happens to prostitutes).
The next book sounds interesting; it's about Christine (a hatmaker who has her dead father's ghost watching over her). Christine was kind to Trula and treated her as a friend. I might eventually pick it up.

I absolutely loved this book, the setting, the time period, the legends/mythology, all of it. I think that residents/natives/fans of New Orleans will enjoy it as well. For those who are not as familiar with New Orleans and its history, you may not feel as connected to the story. But you should be. We have such an interesting history here, that its worth some research to learn about Storyville, voodoo, Marie Laveau, etc.

The book is set in the early 20th century in Storyville, which was historically the city's red light district. Our heroine is Trula Boudreaux, a madam of the most prestigious brothel in Storyville. While Trula is considerd the most beautiful woman in the city, she is also a tortured heroine from a long line of courtesans who was forced into the life as a girl. I really liked Trula, she had a huge heart and tried to do the right thing and be a good person. She took in strays of all kinds and made life better for those less fortunate. And even though she was a madam, she protected her girls and treated them well. Unfortunately their livelihood is being threatened by a long string of gruesome murders happening in the district. This is how our hero comes into the picture, Zeke Barnes, an investigator of the occult.

Zeke is the tall dark and handsome stranger who inspires lust in Trula for the very first time. He is just as drawn to Trula as she is to him. I did not have as strong of a connection to Zeke - I felt like we didn't know much about him except for what we learned about Bess. Zeke was extremely conflicted about his feelings and future, which lead to him treating Trula as a lesser person sometimes. I hated that he was blind to the effect his careless statements had on her. He also needed to do a little more to redeem himself in my eyes as well.

The mystery that played second fiddle to the romance was interesting and factored in the city's voodoo legends. This aspect of New Orleans history is so interesting that I would have liked to see a little more focus on the voodoo and ghosts, but it was still intriguing and kept me guessing. I didn't guess the killer's identity until almost the very end. The author did a great job bringing the demi-monde to life in Storyville, and the touches of voodoo that were present were spot on from what I have learned while living in New Orleans. I was actually surprised that the author was not a Nola native herself!

If you have read my reviews before, then you know that New Orleans is one of my favorite settings for a book. That wins brownie points with me straight from the start. Added to the mix is: a mystery, some Voodoo, and a little romance.

A Haunting Desire is a ripper-esque tale. Except it takes place in New Orleans instead of London, and the victims are men who buy the company of women in the Red Light District. Trula is a madam who has sworn off men after her grandmother sold her to a sixty-five-year-old “protector” when she was fifteen. However, Zeke, the government official sent to solve the murders, is determined to break down the walls Trula has put around herself.

I really enjoyed the writing style, it was wonderfully descriptive. The pace was steady throughout the book. I had to put it down quite a few times because real life kept interrupting, but I didn't have any trouble getting into it again.

The story has a little dash of the paranormal with all the ghosts hovering around. Baron Samedi, Papa Legba, and Marinette also make an appearance. Even with all this going on, I still felt as if something was missing. Maybe I needed more background on the main characters, I'm not sure. However, it was still a good read and anyone who reads historical or paranormal romance will like this book.

They say you always want what you can't have and that's certainly true for Zeke and Trula. He's a federal special investigator sent to New Orleans to find a dangerous killer. She's a stunningly beautiful and wholly unattainable madam of one of the red light district's most popular houses. They are instantly drawn together but both Trula and Zeke fight their growing attraction. And yet, we readers are in the know: we see how Zeke and Trula can heal themselves and each other if they would only give in to love.

A Haunting Desire is another work of historical fiction from Julie Mulhern. But, for this story, she takes us quite further back than the 1970's. New Orleans in 1902 is a seedy scene charged with sexuality and danger - especially given the killer roaming the streets. I loved the atmosphere and the story. It was hard to put the book down when I needed to! Zeke and Trula are endearing and real - even if they are equally stubborn and hard-headed. I waited as they danced around one another, tempting and taunting, and gasped at how they still managed to hurt one another so deeply in the name of saving themselves.

But A Haunting Desire is more than a historical romance. Julie Mulhern weaves in a puzzling murder mystery and moving family drama. I couldn't be more of a fan of this book or this author.

I am in LOVE with this book. There is someone... or something... killing men in New Orleans. Zeke Barnes is sent to town to help solve the mystery, but no one is talking. He meets the most beautiful lady and can't keep his mind off of her. And he's pretty sure she knows what is going on with the murders. He's not put off, nor does he seem to mind that she is a madame of a well-known whore house.

I'm not sure I've read anything else from this period, and if I have, it sure didn't stick with me as this story will. I felt like I stepped into a time machine and could see and hear the streets of New Orleans. I loved the voodoo, the ghosts, the mystery. Zeke is a bit of a puzzle that I just wanted to solve. When he reveals things, you fall in love with him. Trula is a wonderfully strong woman with a heart of gold. I was completely entranced. This author has gained a new stalker.

Haunting Desire is a suspenseful novel. A murderer is prowling the streets and no one knows how to catch him. He is targeting men near whore houses. That is bad for business hence madam Trula takes it upon herself to solve this mystery of brutal killings. But will she able to catch culprit or just get hurt in the process?
Through out the novel I tried to guess who this killer could be and the answer was completely unexpected. This book is full of intrigue, romance and tragedy as well. I loved all the characters, their background stories made them all the more interesting. Book is well written, it was a real treat.
P.S. I received a complementary copy of this book.

An usual Historical Romance/Mystery with Paranormal element. a Gothic type read, to me, but very enjoyable. Fast paced, action filled, but not for the faint of heart. Well written, with vivid descriptions, engaging characters and a unique storyline. A very enjoyable read to be sure. I look forward to the next adventure.

"Trula opened an eye, judged the afternoon, and found it lacking. Her lid fluttered shut." This is Julie Mulhern's writing right here. She just nails it--and makes you smile. Her book plunged me into a wholly unfamiliar and fascinating world. Her writing style is highly evocative, steeped in mood, and lush with elegant prose.

I had so much fun reading this novel. I was intrigued as soon as I saw the tour announcement from Me, My Shelf and I, and knew I wanted to take part. When I was growing up, in my teen years (which were quite some time ago, I’ll admit), I DEVOURED historical romance. I believe I’ve read every book Kathleen Woodiwiss has written, along with a slew of others. I was excited to delve into that genre again with this book. The nice thing is, A Haunting Desire also has a mystery at its heart, with a strong paranormal element as well. Plus, it’s set in one of my favorite periods to read about - the early 1900s - and it’s set in New Orleans, one of my favorite cities to read about. So, yeah, I was really excited to read this.

I loved the mystery at the heart of this story - I mean, the murders were kind of gruesome (but the details were not dwelled on, so don’t let that scare you away), but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t actually feel some sympathy for the villain - that is, in terms of why the murders are being committed. I loved the paranormal element, which is always unique when it comes to reading about New Orleans. New Orleans is like a world unto its own, with the addition of voodoo priests and priestesses, loas, gorgeous above-ground cemeteries full of ghosts, and a thriving paranormal world. If you’ve read and enjoyed books like Sara Gran’s Claire DeWitt mysteries, Joy Castro’s Hell or High Water (which I strongly recommend), or Kelly Keaton’s YA Gods & Monsters series, I think you’ll love this book too. (Similarly, if you loved this book, check those out!)

I also really loved the characters, even secondary or tertiary characters. Every character we encountered was, in my opinion, well-drawn, be they main characters or policemen who are only on a few pages. The author has a talent for being able to give life and personality (even a nasty one) to a character in just a few short lines of description and conversation. I’m thinking, especially, of policeman Peake - what a gross man he was! He didn’t have a very large role, but I guarantee you will know from the moment you meet him what kind of man he is, based on the way he acts, his facial expressions and comments, and descriptions of how he looks. I especially loved Trula, our heroine; I admired her greatly, and I thought she was truly a strong female character. Not just one who *seemed* strong but would then be overshadowed by or become a simpering idiot in the presence of a man - she WAS a strong woman who was able to take care of herself, her “girls,” and her “family.” I loved that about her. At the same time, I adored Zeke and wanted them to be together so badly! The push and pull, the tension between them and wondering if they would finally realize how they felt about each other, was great. And the intimate scenes were exquisite, wow!

A Haunting Desire is extremely well-written and I had no idea while reading that it was the author’s very first novel! The dialogue is snappy and Trula and Zeke’s back-and-forth conversations were sheer perfection. Kudos to the author for doing such a great job with dialogue and characters, which I think must be two of the hardest things to write. Kudos also for being able to balance the mystery, paranormal, and romance elements all together; I never felt that one really overshadowed any other. It was all just intricately balanced and woven into a wonderful story. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of historical romance, paranormal romance, and/or mystery! This is an excellent example of all of these genres combining into one.

Thanks so much to Entangled Pub and Me, My Shelf and I for allowing me take part in this blog tour!

A Haunting Desire is a hard story not to like. As time goes on however, it becomes more evident that there are more than a few "faux pas" in play here, which are working against an otherwise very well crafted tale.

On The Plus Side

Storyville and its nuances are very well depicted here. One can envision the the opulence of the great 'bawdy houses," see the smiles of the coquettish girls, and smell the Parisian perfume of the stately madams. This is a book that has managed to capture not only a place, but a moment in time with a stunningly vivid accuracy.

The entire cast of characters in this drama are people within their own right. No matter how small the role, each player adds his or her own brushstroke to the richness of the tableau being presented.

This is particularly true of leading lady, Trula Boudreaux. Whether she is watching over "her girls" or reading Zeke the riot act for bleeding on her rug. She is a joy to watch.

The Minuses

Zeke Barns is a detective an the trail of a murderer. At least that's what he keeps telling everybody. For most of the book however, the only person that he seems to really be interested in keeping track of is Trula. So much so, in fact, that he often proves quite the nuisance.

The pacing of this story is very slow as it applies to the mystery and murder side of things. Choosing to focus more on the back and forth of Trula and Zeke's hot/cold romance than any real sleuthing. This would not be such an issue if the mystery was not a main component of this book. If it were simply a Historical Romance; the expectation of an engaging investigation and faster overall plot pace, would not be an issue.

In short...

This is a book for people who like vibrant characters, romance, and the quirk, charm, and crazy of old New Orleans. This is a book that can be easily read in one sitting, and it is also a standalone.

Got an ARC from Net Galley.

Thanks Entangled.

I really like this cover. I think it is perfect for this book. Also as a bonus it doesn't have the guy and girl in some silly pose while he's flexing his perky nipples. This book takes place in New Orleans in the year 1902. There's a killer on the loose so Zeke comes to town when he's requested because of his special gift. Yes he sees dead people.

I did like this book but I wish there was more interactions with the ghosts. This is a paranormal historical romance but it was kinda light on the paranormal. It seemed odd that so many people in town were able to see ghosts and it wasn't even questioned. What are the odds of a guy finding a girl that can also see ghosts?

Zeke came to town because of the murders and ended up meeting Trula who happens to be a madam. The focus was more on hooking than the actual murders. Sure it was heartbreaking what happened to those girls but I would have liked to read a bit more about the murders. They just seemed to fade into the background and didn't really get the attention I felt they deserved. I was surprised by who the killer turned out to be because it was someone that I didn't even consider. It was shocking. I also liked that it wasn't all about the sexy scenes. Sure there were a few but they didn't overpower the book which happens in some books. Overall I did enjoy this book and will check out more books by Julie.

My first Julie Mulhern novel, I love a twisted mystery along with some romance. Ms. Mulhern brings it. I will admit that I got a bit confused with the terminology she used - very period driven, southern gothic confused me and jumbled the beginning around for me, but please give it a chance. It is a lovely mystery true to old New Orleans! The setting drives the story - mystery, romance, voodoo, ghosts.

New Orleans has it's own version of Jack the Ripper running rampant in the red light district. Trula - is the madam of one of the better brothels, she came into the life after being sold to a man for jewels by her Grandmother, at the young age of fifteen.

Zeke, works for the government and he has been sent to find the killer, very similar to one that he was investigating in Haiti, in which he lost his wife. So, both Trula and Zeke have some ghosts to slay (both real and imagined).

It is obvious that the research was done - we get a glimpse of Papa Legba and Marinette, along with the reference to Marie Lavaue. Both Zeke and Trula see ghosts. So, that being said - the story is definitely worth the time, it's very well written and the characters are strong and they mystery will keep you turning pages, so if you are looking for a great paranormal/historical romance this one is a keeper.

I don't read a lot of historical, but with this book having paranormal elements AND being set in New Orleans, I was intrigued. I was definitely not disappointed.

A Haunting Desire is set in 1902 New Orleans. It is a southern gothic type mystery with a touch of paranormal and romance. I liked how the romance didn't overpower the novel. There was just enough to keep it interesting, but it was more about mystery than romance. I also enjoyed the ghosts and references to voodoo, and the references to Marie Laveau (if you know New Orleans history, you should know that name!)

The two main characters, Zeke and Trula were well written and compliment each other nicely. The murderer was a surprise, which was great! I do love trying to figure out the mystery, but I'm just as pleased when the author stumps me as I am when I figure it out myself.

This was a good switch up from what I normally read, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Since I love New Orleans and Julie Mulhern novels I thought this book would be a hands-down winner. Not so, I just couldn't get into it. There wasn't a whole lot of action other than the pages full of sexual tension between the most beautiful woman in the world (who happens to have perfect pink lips) and the sexy yankee detective. I felt like I was reading the same content over and over. I wanted to love this title, but I just couldn't get through it.
