First of all, I don't give four stars easily. But if I could, I'd give this 4,7 stars.
+ Honestly, the little time the narrator spent in the presence of the Lord's character, The wholesome epic description of the final spiritual battle (even through not always orderly and exotic enough)... was awesome. I can't say that many fantasy books led me closer to God. This one did.
- It's far from being perfect in matters of storytelling. There could have been much more done with the concept of characters who are not limited by a fixed and physical body. That the hero spent so little time with Jesus was frustrating, and estranged me from him, to be honest. Michael (the 100% Archangel) and his three coworkers waking to individual consciousness at the same time as Cherubim, and Seraphim; All in the same place as countless other angels they don't know, ...I couln't buy that.
But compared to the dozen rare books that honestly and seriously try to romance the events of the first Rebellion in an inspired and lawful manner, among those I read... this one seems to be the less unholy; the least misleding.
If you liked the modern retellings of Pilgrim's Progress, and the Narnia series, you'll love this book.
However, personally, I think it's a book to set apart from Narnia, because this one has a sense of humility and simplicity that those of Lewis doen't really.

Ellen Gunderson Traylor has done a wonderful job of describing how events may have occurred in Heaven. I enjoyed her vivid description of various angels and their roles. I really look forward to the next installment of her War in Heaven series.
