လင်္ကာဒီပချစ်သူ is a retelling of the titular story from the perspective of the villain of the story, Ravana, who serves as the protagonist of the book. He is bestowed upon him the name befitting of a king when he became the conqueror of 10 mountains. The appellation, Datha-giri. In a documentary about the author, he has stated that he has been fascinated with the character Datha-giri for the longest of time. For him, Datha-giri is the most dynamic and layered character in the whole Ramayana play, while the main protagonist Rama comes off to him as mentally-weak, dull or flat. The author noticed that the characters around Datha-giri, like Gambi and Bibi-thana while sharing the same complexity as the villain have yet to be explored and given depth. He saw Datha-giri as a war king maddened and emboldened by this inexplicable thing call love, narrowing his perspective which lead to his demise. So in လင်္ကာဒီပချစ်သူ he remade the story, drawing elements from history, adding realism to humanize the characters and adding his own fictional touch to the tale. Because we see things from his perspective, from his point of view, we hear the things his ears pick up, we interact with the numerous characters in his life, growing attached to them, and we feel the things he felt. Furthermore, I have to acknowledge the writer’s gift for writing as I was seamlessly immersed into this dynasty only to get thrown back out when the story ended. In particular, I loved the beautiful metaphors and the brutal and entrancing war scenes. The Rama play for me has a special place in my heart because it used to be a favorite bedtime story of my late grandmother. When there were times I couldn’t sleep on my own, I would crawl into her bed and let her tell me stories, one of which had been the Rama play which fascinated me at a young age. Although as a youngster I wanted to a hero like Rama, as a young adult I sympathize with the villain a lot more, as laughed, cried and felt together with him. After reading the book, I can take away the important lesson that, from a different perspective even a villain of a legend, can still be empathized.
လင်္ကာဒီပချစ်သူ is not just a story, a work of fiction originated from myth. I, for one think it’s historical. A saga inspired from real events taken place more than 7000 years ago. A fable about two tribes and their conflict over land, power, and the possession of an exquisite maiden. In Hindu religion, Ravana is portrayed as the demon king of Lanka, while Rama is portrayed as a incarnation or past life of the God Vishuu. The same can be said for interpretations of the tale in various cultures and religions, the story is told symbolizing Rama is the force of good and Ravana as the force of evil. As I am not a historian, I cannot prove to the audience whether each event in Ramayana is of the absolute truth or not, my belief for the events of Ramayana taken place years past stands tall. I believe it is extremely likely that in any point in history that a person could fall in the love with another, and we have all learned from history and literature that love could make a person do the craziest and most bizarre things, things one would never dream off. လင်္ကာဒီပချစ်သူ, stands tall as my favorite Burmese novel and it will always have a special place in my heart.

A retelling of Ramayana, a famous legend shared across many Asian countries from the perspective of the antagonist.

My beef with this book is all about the fluff that the author decided to put into it. Instead of focusing his efforts to bring readers to a place where they can relate to the antagonist, the author filled up pages and pages with fluff simply flexing his literary muscle.

Just felt like I had just wasted many hours reading this and felt much older for the struggles to get through this book.
