Edna writes, but isn’t allowed to publish. She lives on her own, but isn’t truly free. She has a dog she loves, but is considered property herself. Life can be complicated for a PePr – a Perfect Partner, designed to be exactly what an individual human needs in their life. That’s especially true when that PePr falls in love.

Posthumous is a novella set in the Perfect Partners, Incorporated universe. They don’t need to be read in any particular order.

Ann lives by the sea under the benevolent rule of her canine overlord and an incredibly foul-mouthed cat. A scientist and Navy officer by profession, the writing bug somehow got inside her during her travels. She's now stuck with it and can't stop writing.

She writes fully immersive works of science fiction and apocalyptic fiction. Ann is also a voracious reader, and adores a well-done audiobook. If she's not writing, then she's reading or listening.

This beautifully written story tells of the result of a perfect match between a PePr and a human. The years of their lovely relationship is full of love and joy, until Edna is eventually, inevitably, left alone with grief and sadness. Her contribution to Ethan's legacy is both a tribute to him and a gift to the population, human or not. I enjoyed every page of Edna's wonderful story, and I was glad to see Lulu included in it.

For those who may not have met Lulu yet, she appears in Ann Christy's story "Lulu Ad Infinitum" in the anthology Dark Beyond The Stars.

I know Ann is planning more stories about Perfect Partners, and I hope there will be more of LuLu as well. I plan to read all of it.

Human Nature, Defined
Ann Christy has managed to so perfectly define Human Nature in this novella as to make me smile in wonder; knowing she is that she is a retired career Naval Officer I ask myself if she has also had training in psychology. She has done the world a Great Service by following her dream of being a science fiction author, of retiring from the Navy to write full-time, and of allowing us, her readers, to glimpse pieces of that FABULOUS MIND and Heart of hers.

This edition is very much unlike the other two I have thus-far read, "PePer, Inc" http://www.amazon.com/PePr-Inc-Perfec... , the first in the series, and "Dogcatcher" http://www.amazon.com/Dogcatcher-Perf... , the last thus far. As mentioned on her Amazon web site and in each book's description, it is not necessary to read each book in order and based on my personal experiences I do not believe it detracts from them not to do so.

I fell smoothly and totally in Love with Edna, the PePer persona, as this lovely tale is written through her experiences. It was difficult, at times, to remember that this dear, gentle and kind soul was in fact a robot, of sorts (I apologize for lack of recalling the exact term used to describe a PePer), and not a true, real woman who loved so completely, so fully, so totally her one true love, Ethan, and her faithful companion dog, Charlie. I gently reveled in her development from what in human terms would have been a very intelligent yet shy and unassuming female to being able to make friends in her neighborhood while always keeping her most lady-like qualities intact.

I saw her dear Ethan in terms of a man who had been lonely most of his life due to his being unable to connect to most humans in ways similar to how people of hugely high intelligence have a hard time connecting; perhaps he even had some Asperger's like qualities to his soul - Brilliantly intelligent mingled with child-like qualities, yet unable to easily make human connections. His at first being skeptical of being able to form a relationship with Edna I saw as something he would have exhibited even towards females not made of computers and science. Her efforts to break through his walls I saw as an understanding human female who recognized the fear of a man whom she had fallen in love with would act.

Their love of their canine 'child', whom Ethan had presented to Edna as a pup and the bonding of Charlie as a CHILD in both of their hearts is not at all unlike many childless (by choice, or otherwise) or even people with children in their family would feel towards their fur babies. (I know we, here, certainly love ours just as strongly as if they were our 'true' children.)

It must be obvious by now - I am totally smitten by this love story... Me, who does NOT read "Romances". Wow. No one is more surprised by this development than I am. I have now discovered that I am quite pleased to read romantic stories set in the world of science fiction, I have been surprised by many authors having included great love stories in this genre.

This beautiful and gorgeous story has given me many things to THINK about concerning Human Nature. From a book dealing with a Non-human, no less. I am thoroughly impressed. Ann Christy has written another of the type of book that I LONG to be able to express... and done so in a genre I have decided to attempt to write stories, books and novellas in. She has shown us Human Nature, not in it's worst, but in it's finest hours, and while I hope to combine both, I see it won't always be necessary to do so to write a very compelling and thoughtful book. She has managed to Teach us, her faithful readers, to think, think THINK - about how the differences between us do not have to set us apart from one another, but can be gracefully embraced while remaining 'true to one's self'.

As an aside, I would be very neglectful if I failed to mention if you have read this entire review, enjoy Ann Christy's works and have not yet read "Yankari: A Talking Earth Tale" http://www.amazon.com/Yankari-Talking... , then you OWE it to yourself to do so, ASAP. It is a Beautiful and wonderful story, unlike any you shall experience in a long while. I absolutely guarantee it shall stay with your soul for many years to come. It certainly has become a part of mine.

I LOVE this book. The bittersweet tone is perfect and I was especially moved by the relationship between Edna and her dog, Charlie in their final scene. Ann Christy is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Review originally posted on Amazon.:

This is a beautifully, haunting story which lingers well after "the End." I found myself incredibly invested in the characters and emotionally drawn in. As humans our memories are flawed and can easily be changed each time you recall them. Edna is able to recall memories perfectly... Almost as if they were captured on film, but with inner commentary perfectly intact. This novella had me thinking about moments in my own life that I wished I could recall perfectly. I could easily see the Perfect Partners, Inc. universe adapted to film or a TV series. I hope someday it will be and can't wait to read more stories from this universe.

This was a wonderful, captivating, emotional, happy/sad, incredible story. It was written with so much emotion and personality, I felt everything the main character felt.

Ann is an outstanding writer, she knows how to get the job done above and beyond your highest expectations.

Few science fiction books of any length are as emotionally raw and powerful as this PePr novella. I am literally still crying...

Another brilliant PePr book

**** Review contains slight spoilers ****
It's not often a book makes me cry and even less often that the character who makes that happen isn't even human!
I loved the 1st PePr book and I love this one even more.
The main character may be 'just' a machine but she is so much more than that!
I loved this book and can't wait to read the next from the PePr world.
I found the last chapter a little disjointed from the rest of the story, however having thought about it, I now really enjoy the resolution it enables the story to have.

I read this series all out of order for some reason. It didn't seem to matter. This is a great series and I would recommend them to anyone. They are mostly afternoon reads, which is something that is attractive to me. I like to read to my patients and love anthologies, short stories and other quick genre that I can read to them. I love having a wide range of books and this series is really popular with some of my patients.

Androids!

This is perhaps the best sci-fi book I've ever read that discusses the issues of when is a robot not a robot but rather a human.
