Coach's Challenge is an age-gap, dad's-best-friend hockey romance with a grumpy widower coach, a fearless ER-doctor heroine, and thirteen years of reasons why this shouldn't happen. Perfect for fans of Liz Tomforde, Lauren Blakely and Tessa Bailey.
When a last-minute move across state lines for my medical residency has me scrambling for a place to live, my father calls in a favor from his closest friend. Which is how I end up living in the home of a legendary NHL coach. Zach Emerson is a gruff, silver-templed single dad, thirteen years older than me and exactly my type.
Before I know it, I'm crushing hard on the coach. Every look lingers too long. Every late-night encounter over hot chocolate and game tape feels taut with possibility. Except he's my father's best friend. That's a line I can't cross.
But when Zach finally admits he's been holding back too?

This book was exactly what I thought it would be in a good way! Leaned into the hockey and age-gap aspects without being annoying about it. I really enjoyed their journey and appreciated that it wasn't without hardships. Being from Ohio myself, I also really enjoyed all the local references, those were super fun! Overall, this was a cute age-gap romance to read!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review! Thank you to the Author, the Publisher, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!

🔥 Tropes & Elements - Age gap - Dad's best friend - Single dad and widower - Forced proximity - Hockey romance - Grief and healing
💭 My Thoughts The premise of this one sounded fun, and I was curious to see how the age gap and dad's-best-friend dynamic would play out. Unfortunately, I struggled with the romance more than I expected.
My biggest issue was that Zach felt like so much more than Charlotte's father's best friend. He'd known her since she was a child; they'd spent time together over the years, and Charlotte had even babysat and befriended his daughter. Their relationship felt almost uncle-like to me, which made the romantic tension uncomfortable rather than exciting.
Zach's behavior didn't exactly help with that feeling. He's a genuinely kind and generous guy, but he spends so much time looking after Charlotte in very fatherly ways. Making her coffee and stocking up on her groceries are sweet gestures, but in the context of their history, I had a hard time seeing them as romantic.
Charlotte is also very attracted to him from the beginning. I wanted more of them getting to know each other as adults before the story leaned so heavily into the sexual tension. And while they're both busy and apparently don't get that much time together, their relationship eventually jumps from trying to resist their feelings to being completely in love. I just didn't feel the development needed to make that transition convincing. There were a few other moments that raised my eyebrows, but I'll keep those to myself to avoid spoilers. 👀
What did work for me was the writing and pacing. The book reads easily, the story flows well, and I never had much trouble moving through it. I can see the appeal of the premise, but the relationship itself didn't quite land for me.
Sadly, this one wasn't my cup of tea, even though I think readers who enjoy these particular tropes may have a different experience.

A hockey coach, an age gap, forced proximity and late-night hot chocolate? The romance department has clearly arrived with a shopping list.
Coach’s Challenge has all the ingredients for an entertaining sports romance. Zach is a gruff, protective widower, Charlotte is an ER doctor starting a new chapter in her life, and their mutual attraction is complicated by one rather significant detail: Zach is her father’s best friend.
I liked the potential here, especially the opportunity to explore grief, healing and the possibility of finding love again. The supporting characters also sound lovely, with Frankie getting particular praise from readers. And honestly, a grumpy hockey coach with a soft side is hardly a difficult concept to sell.
My biggest hesitation is the childhood connection. Zach hasn’t simply known Charlotte for a few years; he has been part of her life since she was young. That history makes their transition into a romantic relationship harder to buy into, at least for some readers. The protective, caring behaviour that might feel swoon-worthy in another romance can start reading as paternal when the characters have that much shared history.
I would also have liked more room for the relationship to develop. There’s a difference between undeniable chemistry and the kind of emotional connection that makes you believe two people are genuinely in love. Give me the awkward conversations, the vulnerable moments, the little things that make the feelings feel real. I want to witness the falling, not just receive the announcement that everyone has landed.
Still, this sounds like an easy, sweet read for fans of hockey romance and familiar tropes. The premise has appeal, even if the central dynamic requires a little more suspension of disbelief than I personally might prefer.
Sometimes the problem isn’t the age gap. It’s the fact that your love interest has enough family history with you to qualify for the extended-family Christmas group chat.
I do like a good age-gap hockey romance, especially when you throw in a grumpy, silver-haired coach who happens to be your dad’s best friend!
I really liked the set-up of this one. A last-minute move, a new medical residency, and suddenly finding yourself living under the same roof as a legendary NHL coach. What could possibly go wrong? Especially when Zach Emerson is exactly the kind of man you know you should stay away from, but can’t seem to stop thinking about.
The chemistry, the stolen glances and those late-night hot chocolate moments had all the makings of a slow-burning romance. There’s something about the forbidden element of falling for your father’s best friend that adds an extra layer of tension, and the thirteen-year age gap makes things even more interesting.
I also loved the combination of a grumpy, protective, widowed single dad and a confident, fearless ER doctor who isn’t afraid to go after what she wants. Underneath the romance, there’s also a lovely thread of grief, healing and learning to open your heart again.
If you’re a fan of forced proximity, forbidden feelings, hockey romance and a hero who has a softer side hidden beneath that grumpy exterior, this one definitely deserves a spot on your TBR.
Tropes you’ll find: 🏒 Age gap ❤️ Dad’s best friend 🏒 Grumpy single dad ❤️ Widower hero 🏒 Forced proximity ❤️ Protective hero 🏒 Sports romance ❤️ ER doctor heroine 🏒 French-Canadian MCs ❤️ Grief, healing and found family
A hockey romance with plenty of forbidden tension and feelings that are hard to ignore!
A grumpy NHL coach, his daughter’s longtime friend, and a living situation that makes keeping feelings under control a whole lot harder! ❤️ This father’s-best-friend, forced-proximity romance had plenty to enjoy, and I really liked getting to know Charlotte and Zach.
Charlotte was unapologetically herself from beginning to end, which I really appreciated. She had such a great personality, and I loved that she stayed true to herself throughout the story.
Zach was your typical grumpy, protective dad, and I enjoyed watching him grow beyond his usual focus on his daughter, Frankie, and his NHL team. Seeing him slowly open himself up to more was a great part of the story.
The 13-year age gap and the fact that Zach had known Charlotte since she was a child might not be for everyone, but I thought their relationship developed at a good pace. I also appreciated that the story gave them time to figure out their feelings rather than rushing things.
I loved the small-town Quebec setting and the use of Quebec French throughout the book. It added to the atmosphere and made the characters feel more authentic. I also liked the relationship between Charlotte and Frankie, who had known each other for years.
Alongside the romance, the story touched on grief, healing, and learning to move forward after loss. I liked how these themes added depth to the characters without taking away from the romance.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read with a strong, independent female lead, a grumpy but caring hero, and a romance that takes its time. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review! ❤️

Laura Marquez Diamond officially owns my whole soul after this one. I have a huge soft spot for a good dad’s best friend romance, but Coach’s Challenge completely blew my expectations out of the water.
Zach Emerson is officially sitting at the very top of my book boyfriend list. He is the ultimate gruff, silver-fox NHL coach who thinks his life is set in stone, but watching him completely unravel for his best friend's daughter was everything. The 13-year age gap felt so realistic and mature, and the chemistry? Absolutely electric from the second she moves into his house.
I loved that the heroine is a total badass ER doctor. She doesn't take any of his grumpy nonsense, and she holds her own so well against him. The forced proximity had my stomach doing flips, and the forbidden, secret-dating aspect had my heart in my throat the entire time because the stakes with her dad felt so high and real.
If you need me, I’ll just be sitting here mourning the fact that I finished it so fast. If you love a protective, single-dad hero who falls absolutely first and a smart, fiercely independent heroine, please go read this immediately.
Coach’s Challenge was a fun read with an interesting plot, enjoyable characters, and strong world-building. Laura Marquez Diamond can write, which made some of my frustrations stand out even more.
My biggest issue was that I wish the author trusted her readers more. I understand that the glasses and tattoos are attractive, and that the characters are physically attracted to each other. The book didn’t need to keep reminding me. There were also many moments when it explained scenes instead of letting the characters and their chemistry speak for themselves.
The book felt repetitive and longer than necessary. I finished it, but I skipped parts of the middle because the repetition started to wear on me. That was my main complaint, though, because I still enjoyed much of the story.
I liked the coach’s relationship with his team and the glimpses of his life outside the romance. I’m especially curious about Frankie and would be interested in reading her story, particularly if it involves her and the Rookie
Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to readers looking for a fun romance with strong world-building and engaging characters.
Zach Emerson is a widowed single dad and a top Stanley Cup–winning NHL coach who is trying to figure out where he fits now that his 18-year-old daughter, Frankie, has left for college. After a call from his best friend Marc, Zach agrees to let Marc’s 29-year-old daughter, Charlotte, move in after she transfers her medical residency from Chicago to Ohio. Once she settles in, what transpires is an undeniable love—even if those around them aren't ready to accept it.
I really enjoyed this book! I instantly fell in love with Zach, and the love he had for his daughter was evident on every page. I loved how his relationship with Charlotte was a slow burn, even after they both acknowledged their attraction. I particularly appreciated that Charlotte wasn't described as a stick-thin stereotype, but as someone real and relatable. I adored them together, especially in the scenes with Frankie. On top of that, the spice was off the charts in some of the pages and had me lapping it up!
If you love an age-gap romance that pulls on your heartstrings with plenty of spice added for good measure, this one is for you!
I liked this storyline as no one really talks about huge age gaps. I think the author handled the topic well. I really enjoyed characters. Especially the single father widowed coach of a NHL Stanley cup winner getting ready to deal with empty nesting. Then his best friend and his hockey coach reaches out as his daughter Charlotte needs a place to recover and do her residency in Ohio. He was just asking for his friend to look out for her but with being an empty nest he said she could move in. They actually see each other at a chance meeting at the grocery store. He looks at her like an attractive younger woman until she says it’s me and now he has to put himself in time out sort to speak. It truly is a great story line. Some extremely spicey detailed scenes but not so many you can’t stomach it. It more speaks to how they want each other so much but he tries to restrain himself until he can’t.
ARC Review: This was my first book from Diamond, and I was pleasantly surprised. I love a good age-gap, dad's best friend book, but they are rarely well written. Because of that, I think I went into this book a bit skeptical.
Overall, it's a good book. The MC's have undeniable chemistry and make a really cute couple. I loved how Charlotte (the FMC) is a badass and fearless, and how Zach (the MMC) was just completely blown away by her from their first interaction. The story also mentioning grief, healing and family was great because it made it so it wasn't just about their attraction to each other, which gave it more depth. However, while it didn't feel there was much of an age gap because of maturity, I wasn't a fan of the fact that Zach knew Charlotte since she was a kid and watched her grow up. Apart from that, the only thing I do wish we got was Zach and Marc's (Charlotte's father) talk after Marc finds out about the relationship rather than just seeing them from afar.
“Our society, our culture, and our humanity depend on never crossing certain lines.”,
Think that who the adult Charlotte and Zach are to one another stems from a shared past that has a bit of an ick factor. Knowing he saw her as a child accounts for some of those vibes. He has interacted with her then albeit not on a daily basis but still given his mentor/friendship with her dad it was a bit off putting. All that being said, see why she was attracted to him given he was 'hot' enough to make a charity calendar, possesses a life long habit of keeping fit, and distinct eye color. As to why he was attracted to her, still at a bit of a loss as while there certainly is admiration for her focus on her career and love for her parents, just don't see these two as compatible.
Thank you Storm Publishing for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book had so many fun hockey vibes and overall was enjoying to read . It deals with love after loss and learning to carry for yourself not just others . As with most hockey romance books the spice did not disappoint and the storyline was good with plenty of backstory and relationship between the characters . Charlotte is very fun and unapologetically honest while Zach is very calm and controlled. The age gap didn't feel like there was a big gap in maturity like there can be in some books with a large age gap but I wasn't a fan of him knowing her since a child in an uncle or family friend kind of way . For me I felt like there could of been more drama to the plot , I feel like the taboo of the age gap was the main drama but then seemed resolved fairly quickly and drama free . Overall this was fun and light-hearted to read with some fun characters and some very spicy scenes .
Once again, my brand is definitely hockey romances at this point. This was a really nice one, different from those I've read so far because it involves a coach this time, and his friend's daughter. I really liked the story overall, the banter was amazing, the yearning on point, and the spice was spicing. That being said, I felt like maybe something was missing a little bit? That, and the fact that Charlotte left her previous relationship partly because her partner was too controlling, felt like he knew what was best for her... and it was slightly the same with Zach at first in my opinion, so I expected maybe a little bit more resistance and dialogue in that direction. I really like the story in any case, really appreciated the bonus epilogue and the different relationship explored in this book, so I definitely recommend!

Y’all, give me a grumpy, silver-templed hockey coach, a fearless ER doctor, an age gap, and some forbidden feelings, and I’m already seated!
Coach’s Challenge by Laura Marquez Diamond was such a fun hockey romance to read! I really enjoyed the chemistry between Charlotte and Zach, especially the yearning, the banter, and those moments when you can tell there are feelings neither of them wants to admit just yet. The forced proximity definitely added to the tension, and I loved watching their relationship develop as they tried to navigate their feelings while knowing there were reasons they probably shouldn’t cross that line.
Charlotte was such a fun FMC. I loved that she was fearless, honest, and unapologetically herself. And Zach? That grumpy, protective, single-dad coach had me interested from the start. The contrast between their personalities made their interactions entertaining, and the romance had plenty of swoony moments and spice to keep me turning the pages.
I also appreciated that the story touched on grief, healing, and learning to move forward after loss. There was more to their relationship than just the attraction, and I enjoyed seeing them work through their feelings and the complications surrounding them.
This is a very easy, quick read. Incredibly fast to get through, and it does hook you. The FMC, Charlotte, is so incredibly independent. She’s her own person, and you never get a childish vibe, which can happen very easily in books with this trope.
What didn’t work for me was that I wish they hadn’t been as close when she was growing up, and I wish her father and Zach had had an actual conversation. I also thought that Frankie acted quite weirdly at times, it just didn’t feel genuine. I also wish the whole Chicago situation had been explored in a more thorough conversation than what we had.
Overall, good book! I had fun reading this.
thank you to the publisher, the author and netgalley for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review! <3
tropes: age gap, parent’s bsf, single dad, sports romance, secret relationship
Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the eARC; all opinions are my own!
I love the premise for this book, even if the execution fell slightly flat for me. I like Charlotte and Zach individually, but I wish that they didn't have such a close relationship beforehand. They are a bit too familiar before forced proximity causes them to fall into a relationship for this age gap to work for me. That being said, I'm not a huge connoisseur of age gap romances - I mostly read them as fanfiction, so for those who are regular readers of this trope, this book will definitely be one you enjoy. I really enjoy the way Diamond writes and I would try another book by her!
After transferring hospitals during her residency, Charlotte moves in with family friend Zach, who happens to be the head coach of the local NHL team. Though Charlotte has known Zach her entire life, there is an attraction there. He’s 13 years older than her best friends with her dad. They soon begin a relationship, but they both feel guilt over their circumstances.
Overall, I liked this book. I wish the author had changed it up a little little bit and not made Zack a lifelong family friend. That’s a little creepy. But I liked the hockey aspects and I liked their relationship once I got over the creepiness.
Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
I got into Coach’s Challenge very quickly and was hooked by the writing style from the start. It was such an enjoyable read, with a great balance of humour, chemistry and plenty of spice!
I loved the female lead. She’s strong, confident and engaging, and I really enjoyed her character. It’s an age-gap romance and the banter between the characters was fun.
Overall, a fun, entertaining and lovely romance. This was my first book by this author and look forward to future books.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
My first time reading this author and I enjoyed the age gap romance.
There was the angst of wanting each other and the angst of revealing their relationship to their families. Although the revelation and reactions might have been a bit less dramatic than I would have liked I still enjoyed.
What I really appreciated was the description of our FMC. Strong, tatted and muscular 😍
Many thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read in advance and share my thoughts.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reading and listening copy!!! I truly valued the mature discussions these main characters had with each other. The chemistry was a spark and then very quickly an inferno. 🔥🔥🔥 far too hot to the touch. Let it be known this book has some veryyy adult content.
Cute hockey romance. He’s a NHL coach and her dad’s best friend; she’s 13 years younger and soon to be a doctor. I enjoyed their story, she seemed much more mature and put together than some other age-gap stories but his relationship with her father did give me a bit of anxiety…
