This was a good read. The plot was interesting, unpredictable, and had some great characters. I got confused sometimes with point of view switching, but eventually I settled in to each scene. There is some graphic violence and sexual acts, so be warned. It's not something I'd want to read if I was alone at home on a stormy night!
A woman falls in love with a pro wrestler and small warning signs appear that she should run away as fast as she can. Why is it that everyone from friends, family and neighbors can see this coming but the person in the relationship cannot?
The Protector is a look at domestic violence and what terror it can bring even if we have protectors. The story is part trailer park soap opera, and part ghost story, as women from the past seem to haunt Aleta (the main character), but are really there to warn her.
After experiencing this world of doublewides, spontaneous love affairs and quick violence, I found the boyfriend Ricky, to be a very formidable enemy. He has the relentlessness of Jason Voorhees and the T-1000 from Terminator 2. He simply won’t let go of the woman he loves. As he gets closer and closer to her, we sense a need that goes beyond love. He’s one of them more disgusting characters I’ve met in a book and I won’t forget him any time soon.
