A novelette of 12,000 words, in the universe of Hambly's Dragonsbane (Winterlands) series. John Aversin, Dragonsbane and Thane of the Winterlands, and his partner the witch Jenny Waynest, are hired by a dragon to rescue a princess... who had originally made a deal with the dragon to carry her off and split her father's treasure. But the plan went amiss, and now the Princess needs rescuing from entities that the dragon doesn't want to tangle with.
Ranging from fantasy to historical fiction, Barbara Hambly has a masterful way of spinning a story. Her twisty plots involve memorable characters, lavish descriptions, scads of novel words, and interesting devices. Her work spans the Star Wars universe, antebellum New Orleans, and various fantasy worlds, sometimes linked with our own.
"I always wanted to be a writer but everyone kept telling me it was impossible to break into the field or make money. I've proven them wrong on both counts." -Barbara Hambly
John Aversin, Dragonsbane, and witch Jenny Waynest are asked to rescue a princess from a dragon in this novelette. But appearances are deceiving. I loved John’s interactions with the dragon, and what John asks as a reward for the rescue.
This is probably one of my favorites so far. Hambly makes a story where the characters have a great impact on my enjoyment while the story follows an expected arc. Very cool.
This is an excellent short story. I love the way Barbara Hambly makes here characters seem so alive and entertaining. It's part of a series that I've recently discovered, and I had to look for all of the books, plus the stories she has on her website. The characters struggle against the evils and problems within their own lives. They suffer losses, but manage to prevail in the end.
