Meet Kara and Kortni, two Russian stepsisters about to enter the war as fighter pilots. But when Kara's secret powers are revealed, it may be time for the coming of a Supergirl.
This was a lot of fun! I think Zatanna and Batwoman save the boring Wonder Woman/Supergirl/Stargirl plots. (I can't help but bristle at how Wonder Woman is so gaga over Steve Trevor - even though I get that's how the classic started out.) There's a lot of potential here, and it's SO MUCH FUN to see all the DC ladies pop up in their cute costumes!
This series continues to improve and I'm grateful for that. The Kate Kane stuff in the beginning feels more natural. The Zatanna thing is "weird... meh". The last two or three pages with Wonder Woman and Mera are also quite interesting.
Bombshells doesn't have me excited enough to keep reading monthly issues indefinitely. I will be reading the trade paperback though. I feel like it's progressing too slowly with all the switching between characters.
More of a 3.5 star rating; I feel a bit bad since those girls seemed like they really enjoyed the idea of fighting the Nazis and then to get called traitors...I’m excited and curious about the next issue.
So I'm reviewing the third print comic, not the one in the illustration, cause I feel bad enough adding one comic as a book, let alone three! But that said I am still LOVING this story. The women writers have created interesting characters and even though we are only getting snippets of a story at a time it's still really interesting and gorgeous to read. This collection saw Kate going off to join the army and leaving gotham, and some cute Batgirl fangirls. Some very strange and messed up things happening in Berlin with the Joker's granddaughter which I really liked, and then a rather disappointing wonder woman snippet. Wonder Woman I think needs to do more than look after Steve Austin and destroy things. Still apart from that I really enjoyed the comic. I was a bit concerned that at the back it was listed as 3 of 3. But checking the DC website it looks like there will be more issues coming. YAY!
The art is fucking GORGEOUS!!! I really enjoy pinup art and the 1940's fashion, so this was such a delight to read <3
I also forgot all about Kate Kane and Maggie Sawyer, which was a pleasant reminder. It'll be interesting to read about a lesbian couple in the 40's, if they're going for that.
I'll be following this new title :) my only complaint is that in this first issue, we only really get to "meet the characters". When the plot actually starts to happen, IT ENDS!!!! But despite that, it's a really great issue.
The review at Panels was accurate. These three first issues of DC Comics : Bombshells are fun, well written and beautifully drawn. Issue 3 introduces Supergirl and her sister. In Russia, as women pilots. These Night Witches did exist. It's really a beautifully drawn comic. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I recently read something that I felt was forced, that they tried to fit as many characters into one comic as they possibly could and they were lost in the shuffle. This one, however, decides to introduce the characters, giving them each small parts in the story for the first three issues, the "enlisted" part of the issues so you can get to know them and when they do team up you'll have some care into who they are.
While I know this universe was mostly built for the cheesecake, (well, girl, cheesecake) I am thoroughly enjoying it. Also, the amazons are awesome in this book.
