As a hurricane gathers its power just off Apalachicola’s shore, another storm comes to a head in Lt. Maggie Redmond's home.

Held prisoner by a man bent on avenging the death of a son, Maggie must find a way to save herself and her two children.

No one knows where they are. No one is coming to help. Maggie and her children will have to find a way to survive both the madness inside their home and the madness raging outside.

Two storms that nobody thought were coming just made landfall.

About the Forgotten Coast Series

The first four books of the series, Low Tide, Riptide, What Washes Up, and Landfall, set the stage for the rest of the series. While there are subplots resolved in each book, there is an overarching storyline that is not resolved until Landfall , so readers will enjoy them best if these are read in order.

Subsequent books in the series are both longer (ranging between 200-250 pages) and designed to stand alone, so they may be read in any order.

I live in small town Tennessee, with three children still at home and two grown kids just blocks away.

I am an unrepentant romantic, a caffeine addict and a true dork. I apologize for none of these.

3.5 Stars - kidnap during a hurricane. Somewhat clichéd but quite adequately handled by McKenna.
(Included in Kindle Unlimited)

Due to the never-ending introspection for Maggie during the hurricane, not my favourite genre, I did a lot of skimming in this book.

Wow. Huge bombshell here. Now we know the mystery of Boudreaux's interest in Maggie. This was the central mystery which has kept me plowing through these books. And it's probably enough to keep me going through several more.

A side-mystery:

Notes and quotes, NO SPOILERS:

She gently let out a breath before she answered. “I was thinking that I’d like to hug you goodbye.” He looked at her for a moment, then swallowed and held out one arm. She stepped closer, and tentatively put her arms around his neck. He closed his arm around her waist, and he could smell coconut shampoo in her hair as he lowered his head next to hers. He breathed it in soundlessly, then put his other arm around her and held her. As they stood there, he realized that it was the first time...

General note:

I'm going to review the first five books as if they were one large volume, since the first few books end suddenly and mid-plot, frustratingly. I speculate that publishing 5x 200 page volumes might provide better income for her than a single large volume...

Which leads to a second problem: Endless repetition of character descriptions (including animals), and plot updates in each new volume (which you can skim over) but... These books cannot really be read separately, they must be read in order (at least books 1-5).

The Good
Firstly, McKenna shines at character development and description. There is a commanding feminine demeanour throughout these books, perhaps the best I've ever seen.

In fact, I would say characters and emotions are the lead attraction of these books for me now, well ahead of the mystery/plots (which get better). The pacing is always good, and the prose also improves substantially over time. The dialogue is good, and the characters speak with (mostly) distinct voices.

There is a sub-plot which, to me, drives everything:
The strange and powerful attraction between Maggie and Bennett Boudreaux.

Boudreaux is the town "kingpin", ascribed with various crimes including murder, but his charm and eloquence make him impressive and attractive. The mystery of what binds Maggie and Boudreaux is resolved in three surprising parts throughout the first 5-6 books, and each scene and dialogue between Maggie and Boudreaux is superb.

Nevertheless, I'm enjoying this series more and more, especially as the quality of prose and plotting improves.

If you pick up this series (must start with book #1), please be patient and read through the first four or five books before making a decision on the overall series.

4th in the series that I'll read until the finish. Each book about an area of Florida I just visited, otherwise I don't know that I would have bothered. I love reading local authors work though of places I visit.

I am enjoying reading this series but......

I liked the first three books better than this one but I am also annoyed at them. If the first three had been combined with this one into one book I would have given the one book at least four stars. I hate it when books end abruptly and don't resolve the story lines, which is what the first three did. Since all four are available on Kindle Unlimited it didn't bother me as much, but it did annoy me to have to read facts in each book that were learned in the previous books. There could easily have been 20 - 40 pages that could have been eliminated overall, maybe more. The story lines are interesting, though, and I like reading about an area I am familiar with, so I do recommend the books if you have Unlimited.

This is the fourth book in Dawn Lee McKenna's surprise best-selling "Forgotten Coast" series, which turns the charming, slow-paced beach town of Apalachicola into a charming, crime-ridden beach town. This one's a wild one that brings us back full circle to a couple of mysteries that started off with the first book and resolves them.

The author puts her heroine, Lt. Maggie Redmond, into jeopardy straightaway in the opening pages: A hurricane is battering the town, Maggie and her family have been taken prisoner, she's managed to free herself and grab a shotgun and when she walks out the front door she sees the charming but mysterious crime boss Bennett Boudreaux at the foot of her steps.

Then the story spins back to just before the storm, with Maggie stopping by the town's florist shop and first encountering the man who will wind up capturing her and her son and daughter, preventing them from leaving town before the storm hits.

Before this book is over, McKenna finally tells her readers why Boudreaux has taken such an interest in Maggie. She also reveals what really happened with the shooting that kicked off the whole series in the first place. And Maggie, Boudreaux and her boss/love interest, the sheriff, each get moments in the spotlight as their subtle dance continues.

I do wish Maggie's captor had more substance to him in the plot (his end, when it comes, is remarklably swift). Overall this is more a story of survival under remarkable circumstances than a tale of suspense or mystery.

I may check out No. 5 in the series. We'll see.

Another great page turner from Dawn Lee McKenna. This ties up what was going on in the previous three books and explains a lot about the actions of the various characters in the book. I will definitely be reading more of this series.

Landfall is a hit

The characters in this series are dynamic and believable. The humor dry and laugh out loud. The action is exciting and suspenseful from start to finish. If you enjoy the romantic suspense genre, you should read this series. I can't wait for the next one!

Great series

Every book is 5 stars. The characters, plots, and little twists and turns make you want to not put the book down. These are the best books I have read in a long time. I hope there are more than the 4.

Landfall: The Forgotten Coast Florida Suspense Novel Book 4 is by Dawn Lee McKenna. This book is the best yet. It really keeps you glued to the pages as you watch Maggie Redmond fight the elements as well as a man who is out to kill her.
Maggie and her kids are getting packed to go to Orlando where they will meet up with her parents who are coming back from a cruise. The kids will stay with them while Maggie spends her time waiting at the hospital for word of Wyatt Hamilton’s surgery. First, they had to batten down the house and chickens before the storm Faye hit. As Maggie finally caught her rooster, Stoopid, she turned and saw a man at the top of the stairs to the house holding a gun to her son, Kyle’s, head. He had already knocked Skye out and now had Kyle and herself. He tried to take Maggie out of the house after tying up the kids; but his car wouldn’t start. He made a mysterious phone call and they waited for someone to appear. Maggie frantically thinks of how she can get the upper hand and get herself and her children out of this mess. With the storm hitting, it will be difficult. When she finally attacks the man, he puts his hands on her neck and squeezes. The last thing Maggie sees is Bennett Boudreaux’s face over the man’s shoulder. Hatred filled his eyes.
Will Maggie and her kids get out of this mess? Who is wanting to kill her and why? Will Wyatt be able to get back from Orlando and help her? Will the storm Faye will after all?

This is an outstanding series of books and I, somehow read book five out of sequence, not too disappointed though. I live in Cedar Key, Fl. and find it rather interesting that my little hometowns mentioned in this great family oriented novel. Great story and enjoyable experience with the author's exceptional writing abilities and his uncanny ability to always maintain my undivided attention.

Not too hard to award five stars to this masterpiece, as Ms. McKenna does an excellent job with her descriptive adventures throughout the entire book. Too, there were plenty of entertaining family-friendly episodes throughout the entire story.

Great selection of characters and storylines throughout the complete adventure of the storm, with a little romance and humor to maintain the reader's attention.

Most definitely recommend this book, as well as the entire series to all you lovers of a truly family-friendly event. No time to recover from one exciting event to another episode of heartwarming family-friendly living feature. Do not miss reading this series, or you will be the definite loser.😤

This was the weakest of the four books for me, but I'm still hooked on the series because we are left with a HUGE cliffhanger and I just HAVE to know what happens next!

A hurricane is brewing off the coast of Florida, and everyone has been told to evacuate. Wyatt, recovering from his injuries received at the end of book three, is out of town waiting for surgery. He's desperately trying to get a hold of Maggie, and a nagging feeling at the pit of his stomach when he's unable to motivates him to jump in the car and head back to Apalachicola's shore. Turns out that Maggie and her two children, Kyle and Sky, are being held hostage by a man wielding a gun. After beating Maggie senseless, he ties his hostages up and Maggie begins to lose hope.

There is a lot of text about the storm and subsequent flood but I found it difficult to follow along and visualize. The gist of this story is that Patrick Boudreaux hired the masked gunman to rid of Maggie, and when Bennett finds out, he rushes to her aid. He becomes gravely injured, and he's bleeding out when the reader finds out (not Maggie) that Bennett is apparently Maggie's FATHER which left me with so many questions! I can't wait to read on and see how this unfolds.

Phew!
Finished this box set of four novellas. Which means I've enjoyed them.
The storytelling, well developed characters, setting and plot lines are engaging. But as I've mentioned in my reviews of the earlier titles in this set, I've found the structure frustrating and annoying.
As a retired book editor, I can see how this set could have been woven into one doorstopper of a fabulous novel with far more suspense and much less of the tiresome repetition which has been necessary to allow each novella to stand alone.
James Lee Burke is a master of this craft and I love the unsubtle adulation given him in this series.
I'm just a little disappointed that this author (or perhaps her publishers?) hasn't been able to get a little closer to his level of brilliance. Then again, who can? Perhaps I'm being too picky.
This set is a good read for a rainy weekend.
Would I read more titles in the series? Not sure.

I am truly enjoying all of this series and find Dawn Lee McKenna's work to be well done. This is my favorite of the Forgotten Coast Series so far perhaps because of the description of the hurricane and certainly because the mystery of the strange attraction between Maggie and Mr. Boudreaux is finally coming to light. As a life long resident of the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast and a frequent visitor to the Apalach, St. George Island area, I have lived through many hurricanes and can identify with the horrifying descriptions in LANDFALL. (#HurricaneIvan) It's a surprise to me that I have become fond of Mr. Boudreaux and I was relieved at the outcome of this story. Thank you Ms McKenna for your commitment to this series. I am enjoying it and find it to be a great way to pass the hot, humid days of a NW Florida summer.

Ok this was...unreadable. I read at it but mostly skimmed chapters because I figured out where she was going and once again I was annoyed. The whole story lacked imagination. So why three stars? The kidnapper at the beginning was unexpected so an extra star for that. It was a surprise.

The twist with Boudreaux was anticipated but I wasn’t 100% sure so a half star for that.

The first star is because I think even the worst book deserves recognition because the courage to write a book and publish it always deserves at least one star because books don’t write themselves and usually there is some good writing to be found among the cliches. 2.5 stars but I rounded up to 3.

Yes I will read the next book because now I am kind of invested in the characters even though I am still not a Maggie fan.

This book was a little different from the others in that it mostly took place in a few hours during a hurricane. Everything that could go wrong for poor Maggie, does go wrong. She is held captive by a crazy man who won't tell her why he is holding her and her children. Wyatt is far away in Orlando getting ready to have hip surgery, Mom and Dad are returning from a cruise in Jacksonville. Maggie is supposed to pick them up, but never arrives. They call Wyatt who cancels his surgery to go "save" Maggie. But, for the most part strong Maggie has to save herself. I was on the edge of my seat and read the entire thing in one sitting. So happy my battery didn't die on my Kindle. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Best one yet! There are a few inconsistencies, like how did she know a particular relationship was what it was and not any number of equally reasonable alternatives? - but forgiven - and I may have missed it. ;-)
As I've said before: The books in this series build on each other and REALLY should be read in order - starting with book 1. Really enjoying getting to know the main characters better each book. Each book does end at a 'rest point', but leaves way too many threads untied. Think they MIGHT be better as fewer longer books, but maybe not... Solid 4 stars, -0.5 for ambiguous book break issues.
That said, this story does seem to come to a much more complete 'conclusion' than the previous three and makes a good stopping point in the narrative. (I will move on to book 5 anyway!)

Landfall (The Forgotten Coast Florida #4)

Maggie's life is about to change for the worst. Wyatt's on his way to Lauderdale for hip surgery, her parents are expecting her to pick them up in Jacksonville, and a hurricane is in the gulf. Then, all hell breaks loose. The hurricane is coming up the Florida coast, Maggie and the kids close up the house, and then, she's attacked, her and the kids tied up, and the race to live and make sure that the same is true with Kyle and Sky becomes Maggie's only priority. How it all works out, just keep turning the pages until the end. Let me know if you find the hidden truth at the end. Great story and can't wait to see what happens next.

WOW!

Considering the characters, this is exactly what might be expected. Some suspicions are confirmed, the usual speed only slows as the characters wade through the deep water of a hurricane, and in the end, it appears everyone is still happy. Whatever that is.
Who me these characters do have what can only be called amazing adventures, the adventures make perfect sense in the context of the books. And aren't even unbelievable. Even though they are. In some ways, these books remind me of the short-lived television series "Burned" where people are scrambling to do the right thing, which generally involved a lot of mayhem and trying to survive while doing in the bad guys.

I can't stop reading this series

Each book has a separate, but distinct story, but the continuing underlying theme has really drawn me in. This story becomes almost terrifying because, not only is a hurricane threatening to make landfall, there's another sinister attempt on Maggie's life. Is he finally going to do her in? Or is it a surprise coming? Tense throughout, but, thankfully, a little comic relief in the form of 'Stoopid', Maggie's wacky rooster. "In his oddly broken crow, he advised her with his usual urgency that she had returned, or that all was well, or that all was not. His reports tended to be vague, but vital." LOL

“Landfall" is the fourth in author McKenna’s “Forgotten Coast” (currently 10-book) series, set in a small town in Florida’s panhandle, featuring her protagonist police Detective Maggie Redmond. The main plot is about a violent hurricane that severely floods the area and poses Maggie and her family mortal danger when an apparent avenger invades her house. Maggie’s continued involvement with town “villain” Bennett Boudreaux, as well as her escalating mutual romantic interest in her boss, Sherriff Wyatt Hamilton, is an ongoing part of the tale. As many reviewers have already stated, this book is the fourth in a series and they really should be read in order. That being said, I found this book to be the best of the series.

The book grabbed my attention from the first page and had me hooked right through to the end. In fact, I finished it in under 24 hours. It also had a very unexpected twist that classified some of the missing pieces in the back story. As per Goodreads' guidelines, I rarely give a book a 5 star rating. This book deserves it.

4 ½ *REALLY/FREE PRIME READ
THIS IS THE 4TH BOOK IN THIS SERIES THEY ARE ALL STAND-ALONES. AS USUAL IN A STAND-ALONE SERIES EACH BOOK HAS SO MUCH OF THE SAME BACKGROUND INFO TO MAKE IT UNDERSTANDABLE TO A FIRST TIME READER. THAT’S MY PROBLEM BECAUSE THE EXACT SAME WORDS ARE USED TO DESCRIBE EACH BACKSTORY. OMG. THAT GETS REAL OLD WHEN READING THEM BACK-TO-BACK. THAT LETS ME KNOW IF THE SERIES WERE COMPACTED THE 4 BOOKS COULD BE JUST ONE. I JUST SKIP OVER THOSE PARTS, WOULD HAVE GIVEN THIS 5*stars BUT I KNOCKED OF A HALF A POINT FOR THE REPEATING PARTS. ;D

I loved all 4 books in this series. If you start with Book 1, you will definitely want to have the rest ready! Each one leaves you hanging for the next book to finish the story.
My favorite character was Ms. Evangeline, Boudreau's former nanny. I loved the banter between them. She is hilarious!
I felt there could have been another book to continue the revelation that happened at the end, but I guess it was best left right there. I still wonder if Maggie was ever told the secret, and exactly what did happen years ago?

Predictable "answers" that didn't satisfy. The first 4 books should have been one book. You could have made it work by cutting out most of the ending of this book. Maggie goes outside to find Boudreaux. Almost has him. Washed away. Find him again. Washed away. Etc. And if Maggie can't figure out why Boudreaux is interested is her, she is not much of a detective. I figured it out in the second book.

As a hurricane heads to police officer Maggie Redmond's home in coastal Apalachicola, Florida, an intruder arrives, changing the course of Maggie and her two children's planned escape from the oncoming storm.

This was another very good, intense installment to this series. You can feel all of Maggie's emotions throughout the terrifying situation she finds herself in. We also learn some surprising information about Maggie that she is not yet aware of herself...

Ultimate sacrifice

Bennett Boudreaux proves what he's willing to risk to save Maggie's life. Wyatt is worried and confused about Maggie's relationship with Mr. Boudreaux but so is she. Sky and Kyle really come through for their Mom. I'm unsure if Maggie is better off knowing the truth of not.

Very well written -- so much so that the intensity of the plot bothered me. It was gripping from page one to the end with no break in the action. The constant suspense was too much for me. As interested as I am in these characters and as much as I appreciate the outstanding writing, I am going to have to wait a while to recover before I read another in this series.

I just finished the fourth book in the series and truly these were written as one story and should have been one book. I am disappointed that I was tricked into paying for four books when it should have been one. The story was good and wrapped up well. You come to know and understand the characters well and it truly pulled me in and kept me purchasing the next book so its a good story.

I don't know if I would like this series as much if I had not spent some time in Apalachicola (where it takes place) but I do indeed like it. I could have quit after the 3rd book as things got somewhat wrapped up and there was no real cliff hanger to push me to book 4 in the series but I continued on none the less and i'm glad I did. Really enjoyed this one.
