Okay, I will say, this book is awesome! It has everything, fantasy, magic, an extremely hot guy, kitchen appliances, where you simply speak…”off” or “on”… and it also happens; there is an extremely protective, kick butt cat guardian:)
Now, I will start from the beginning. Meeka, is a young woman whose life isn’t what she would like; both her parents have a drinking problems, and for years she has been torn between caring for them, and wanting to escape the ensuring drama that always happens in their midst.
After the last communication with her parents, where it seemed, yet again her parents wanted something from her….not extending love as parents should, but needing something, using her…Meeka, basically tells them to leave her life until they can be true parents. So upset, she and her companion, her pet cat,the one who had always conforted her… were out canoeing, when a storm arose and things go out of control and Meeka subsquently blacks out; Meeka and her companion Catz, ends up in Enchantment, a place where the animals spoke, and a gorgeous half human/half dragon male called Kerrigan guarded.
Kerrigan was raised in Enchantment, he came from a race that traveled through worlds to restore balance and act as protectors. His natural parents, although loved him greatly, had left him in Enchantment to be raised and when grown protect the citizens of Enchantment in the future.
Kerrigan and Meeka’s destiny are interwined, although they relunctantly accepts this. Meeka discovers that she is actually a great sorceress and that her cat companion is actually a shapeshifter from a different race called Lemrens…. who are sent when persons with special abilities are discovered, to aide and guide these individuals(and protect when needed); until they are ready and able to walk in their destinies.
So Meeka, learns who she really is ,and she and Kerrigan are thrown together to protect Enchantment and to keep Thalius(a member of the Enchantment couselors, a governing body of Enchantment) from taking Meeka’s powers for his own use.
The story is well written, descriptive and flows. I was sucked in right from the start, once Kerrigan saw Meeka I was enthralled. The author did such a great job with description, I was truly able to see Kerrigans struggle against his feelings for this woman, he was one that did not admit to having feelings of attachment to anyone; yes, the heat and tension of the main character’s atttraction for one another was superbly despicted!
The action that ensued kept me on the edge of my seat and the outcome was fulfilling… but I cannot wait for the next Lawna Mackie creation!
Oh, and also…I LOVED Catz, being a huge cat person….thank-you Ms. Mackie I always had the sneaking suspicion that my cats were not all they seemed…now there is proof!:)
Run, grab your digital devices and get this book! You will not be disappointed
What can you say about Lawna Mackie? She is brilliant when she writes books, she knows how to pull her readers into the story and take them to faraway places. Lawna knows just what readers want in her stories, and she delivers without fail in all of her books and Enchantment is no different.
Meeka is a young woman whose parents are always drunk unless they need her to do something for them then they are nice to her. After a rather huge blow up incident Meeka finds herself along with her trusty companion Catz in a river trying to forget about the incident, however when a storm comes upon the pair in the Meeka tries to navigate to a beaver dam until the storm passes them over, when she looks back up to the dam she sees a dark head bobbing in the water then a wide tail slaps the water scaring Meeka a bit. Trying to get out of the river Meeka losses her paddle to the river, then she hears a massive splash close to the canoe and she finds herself face to face with a large Beaver which results in her falling into the river then her world goes black.
Kerrigan, son of Paddy and Todd Beaver, is working on his house when the alarm that lets the beavers know that something is close to the entrance of Enchantment goes off. Thought to be unable to sustain passing thru the veil between Upper world and Enchantment unless you are a beaver Kerrigan believes that the creature has dies. When he goes to his parents’ house he finds Todd with his hands tangles in his fur. “We have a problem.” When said parent to child those four words are never good. Todd had saved the “creatures” from dying when Catz begged him to save Meeka’s life, something that Todd has never done in the past; his job is to make sure that no Upper world beings find their way into Enchantment. Kerrigan not being able to believe that his father had in fact cocooned the pair losses his temper a bit until Paddy comes in and tells the pair to quiet down that their guests need to rest, Kerrigan goes to his old room and takes a look at the pair at the behest of his mother.
When Meeka does wake up there are things that she can't believe, such as the fact that Catz can actually talk and she can understand her, there is a world where beavers talk, where magic is all around her, there is a world where gargoyles can move around freely and she has many gifts that some people in Enchantment want to use for bad even if Meeka doesn’t have a bad bone in her body. The attraction between both Meeka and Kerrigan is something that no one can deny, no matter how much Kerrigan tries. When Meeka is kidnapped along with Paddy, Kerrigan threatens to destroy Enchantment unless the two are returned unharmed. The love and affection that Kerrigan and Meeka have for each other will take your breath away. It is something that many people in the world only dream of.
This story is one that will always be a favorite. This book has everything that a reader wants in a story, adventure, action, mystery, love, romance, devotion as well as the ever relentless bad guy who thinks that he is above everything else. If you are looking for a truly wonderful Paranormal Romance novel then Enchantment is for you. I can’t wait to read more and I hope that in time we will get to see more of Meeka, Kerrigan, Todd, Paddy, Catz and Threeo.
I was given this free copy in exchange for my honest review.
I tried really hard to like this book, despite the very first line that screams, "This book is not edited." I get that not everyone puts their trust into the right people.
But... it's just in really bad shape and with all I have waiting to be read, there are better ways to spend my time.
I'd give this another look if it were professionally edited and re-released. Authors has some ideas that could work, if she had a professional team.
Enchantment, by author Lawna Mackie, delivers us to a world of magic and romance where the reader never knows what they might encounter on the next page. It’s the story of Meeka and Kerrigan, two magical people who destiny is determined to bring together despite being from different worlds. The hearts of both are carefully guarded and it will take their willingness to allow change, and love, into their lives before they can have their happily ever after.
The story starts with Meeka finding herself on the parallel dimension of Enchantment after an Earthly boat accident. She’s saved by Todd Beaver, who breaks Enchantment’s rules to bring her through the gateway between their worlds. Along for the ride is Meeka’s cat, Catz, who isn’t quite what she seems. Trouble greets Meeka almost right away as Todd’s adopted son Kerrigan finds himself faced with the obligation to send Meeka back from where she came, despite her certain death on the trip back. What follows is a world-wind tale of magic, fantastical creatures, gargoyle warriors, villains determined to rule the world at any cost, and smoking hot chemistry between the two leads.
Meeka and Kerrigan’s chemistry jumps off the page and actually bursts with magic. Both characters are quite likable. Kerrigan, Enchantment’s Enforcer and protector, is an alpha male to the core and easy on the eyes (just check out the gorgeous book cover). Part dragon, he is literally containing the beast inside. Meeka reflects her name, modest and introverted after growing up with neglectful parents. Arriving on Enchantment draws out the woman, sorceress, and warrior inside, proving that she is the woman for Kerrigan. The secondary characters run the gamut of interesting creatures: Todd and Paddy Beaver, Kerrigan’s adoptive parents and Enchantment’s Secret Keepers, Catz, the Lemren shape-shifter sent to protect Meeka, Stryker, a gargoyle warrior who can take human form and Kerrigan’s second in command, and the two villains, Thalius and Jager, certainly two of the most vile villains ever encountered. This is a book that has it all: romance, suspense, mysterious parentage, and magic.
Yet, fantasy writing requires quite a few demands from its author. There’s world building and the introduction of new creatures, plot and character development, all done while making the story believable. Ms. Mackie almost does it, but in the end Enchantment falls short. Her writing style, though at times beautifully descriptive, is plagued by dialogue formatting issues, which interrupts the flow of what would otherwise be an easy read. While Kerrigan and Meeka are amazing together, there is very little to support their growth from strangers to lovers. And somewhere along the way it seems as though Enchantment forgot what type of book it wanted to be.
There are many children’s fantasy elements to this story. We meet Kerrigan’s pet, Threeo, a hipodogwl who is a combination hippo, dog, and owl. Threeo, like all creatures of Enchantment, can speak English, but does so in a childlike manner. Enchantment has seven moons and seven suns and each day the sky is a different color. For entertainment, the citizens of Enchantment go “funny fishing” where they use berries as bait and catch fish who reward you with kisses. Magic is used literally for everything, from magical shower brushes that clean you, to clothes that tie themselves on you, and beds that flow down a river and return to their starting point. All of these are delightful elements, but seem out-of-place in an adult novel.
And make no mistake, this is an adult novel. Both villains take part in graphic, otherworldly, sexual encounters. As mentioned earlier, the chemistry between Meeka and Kerrigan is off the charts and there are some lovely scenes between the two, but what begins as a sensual love scene is interrupted by coarse sex language. I found these to be contradictory to both the sensuality and childlike elements found throughout the book.
Finally, despite Enchantment being a dimension parallel to Earth bursting with magic, Ms. Mackie doesn’t quite commit to leaving Earth behind. The language used by the citizens of Enchantment is as American as apple pie, the citizens wear jeans and t-shirts, and the showers, kitchen, and food are as similar as what you’d find anywhere in America.
