Rock N Soul

Rate this book
I’m Tyler Lindsey, and until recently, I had an okay apartment, an okay girlfriend, and an okay job as a bellboy at a respectable Boston hotel. Then rock star Chris Raiden died right before I brought his room service—stiffing me on the tip, by the way—and my life went to hell. My fifteen minutes of fame was more like five seconds, and my girlfriend left me in disgust.

But even worse—Chris is haunting me. Not the room where he died, like a normal ghost. No, somehow he’s stuck to me and is insisting on taking care of a bunch of unfinished business in California. So now I have to traipse across the country with the world’s most narcissistic ghost.

But . . . I keep having these weird thoughts. Thoughts about how much I like the way he makes me laugh. Thoughts where I kind of want to kiss the emo-narcissist, even though he’s a ghost and an asshole and I can’t touch him anyway. And even if I could, what will happen when he finishes his business and nothing’s keeping him here anymore?

Holy crap, you guys, I LOVED this book.

And, yes, it totally took me by surprise.

First of all, Lauren Sattersby is a newbie author, which automatically made my expectations pretty low. Secondly, rock star books are not really my thing, and they can be pretty hit or miss for me.

But, seriously, I'm in mourning that Lauren Sattersby has no backlist for me to devour because I am so crushing on her author-style right now!!

This book was right up my alley for a lot of reasons.

It is slooooooow burn-y. Like really, really slow, which I actually love. It is a HUGE pet peeve of mine when a book doesn't take its time to develop the sexual chemistry and romance. I like the MCs to be friends or just meeting when the book starts, then slowly the attraction builds. That is exactly how this book was for me. Sure, some may say that these guys take too long to get to any action, but for me, the pacing was just spot on.

We get a gay virgin. This book isn't a GFY, but Tyler isn't experienced in the way of gay lovin' so we get to go on his smutty, smutty journey of gay exploration with him. *rubs hands gleefully*

Two bisexual men. Yum. Gah, I love me some bi guys.

Not only does the book have so much going for it in terms of tropes, but the writing was just so spot on. I was obsessed with this book all day. OBSESSED. I literally couldn't stop reading, and I was even reading while just sitting in the car because I didn't want to put it down to drive!

This book had it all for me. It was funny, it was touching, and it was HOT. Sure, that ending was clumsy and didn't totally make sense, but ghost books are always a bitch to end well. I pardon it for that one sin.

I adored every second of this book. If you like long, well-developed, super slow-burn romances, then you HAVE to try this one. It's a keeper.

I'm not going to give this book one star. That wouldn't be fair. The writing's snappy and the idea anything if not creative.

But after the first 100 pages of innane banter and discussions about ex-girlfriends and more banter, I was Done (yes, with a capital D).

Less reminiscing about the hotness of women, more man-on-man action, please.

This wasn't slow burn as much as slow torture by boredom.

But I carried on.

Then I got to the end and let out a scream worthy of Edvard Munch.

It turns out that I

Silly me for not taking the blurb literally.

Oh. My. Goodness!

This was SUCH an amazing book! Right when I read the blurb, I wanted to get to the end because I was curious about how they will end up together. So I just put on my scanning glasses and went to work! ;-)

I loved Tyler. I loved Chris. But what I loved the most was their sarcasm. It made for such an enjoyable read. The continuous back and forth lasted till the end, and I read it all with a smile (and the random occasions of laughing out loud).

The plot intrigued me to no end. I mean, MM romance between a living and a dead guy? Really? Is that even possible? But after reading the book, I can safely say that yes, it is clearly possible and is extremely enjoyable. The icing on the cake was that I couldn't find ANY typo. ANY!! How amazing is that? I can't comment on punctuation, because I was too engrossed in the story to keep an eye on that. But I think even that was great. So it made a perfect read for me.

But the rocky road then smoothed out, and I got to enjoy their relationship. I liked the role Gemma played. I was able to tolerate Eric, too, especially after that thing with Carmen. That was completely cruel and, hence, hilarious.

The ending, when it came, was such a cherished climax. I was laughing at myself because just like Tyler, I hadn't read the signs right. I kept on thinking that maybe Chris will somehow magically come back as a living person after some divine intervention. But I'm happy that that wasn't the ending. The actual ending seemed even more special. I would have loved it to be more detailed. I wanted them both to share some love and conversation, but I am not going to let that make me take off a star from my rating. It was good enough that I am willing to let it go.

This book has put the author on my radar. I'm going to wait patiently for her next book, and maybe if I am desperate enough, I will try to find her other pen name to see if she has done the same magic with her other stories, too.

A recommendation to all those who love a happy ending but with a touch of snark and sass. ;-)

JFC. I hav a weakness for M/M with ghosts. It's the only paranormal read I like. But I'm super picky and don't read them often bc they have to be done JUST so. I was nervous bc she's new and the book is long (400 pages in print / 5400ish kindle locations).

Omfg, tho. I. LOVED. This. It had so much heart. And Chris & Tyler are just so so much fun together with the snarking. And when their first time happens (like 70% tho so settle in for the slow burn) it was PERF because it was hot AF and all ghost-y AND they knew their feelings for each other so it was beautiful and sweet at the same time, but it also made me stress so hard as to HOW they'd work this out.

The feels in this one. The ache for Tyler bc he's fallen for a dead guy, and aching so much for Chris because he ended his life so fucking young and in such a dumb, senseless way... And that he knows it thru the book. It's just ... *sigh*

I haven't read a ghost book I enjoyed this much since Kim Fielding's Motel. Pool. And that's one of my absolute faves. This one tho, just bumped into a close second, as well as one of my top dozen or so fav M/Ms ever. It hit every effing right note for me, and I can NOT wait to see what Lauren has up her sleeves next bc if this was her debut she's gonna be someone to watch.

Huh.

Maybe I'll just start by saying that this is my first book by the author and I really like her voice. The book started out strong and the 1st person POV of our MC Tyler had me laughing and snickering and snarkying alongside him. I was hopeful.

Enter in Chris, the rock star, the dead rock star, the dead but not passing to the afterlife rock star, the ghost rock star. I also liked Chris. I found myself really enjoying the banter between the 2 of them. For 20 pages, 30 pages, less so at 40 pages, really not as much by 50 pages. It just went...on and on and on. And the story did not move with it.

Honestly, when the plot finally did start to progress, I was...fatigued, disengaged, and slightly annoyed. So, though I kept going, I didn't really want to keep going.

And the end...ummmm...really? I don't know...sweet...but...really?

I think this book would have been better with 100 less pages and maybe an epilogue or something?

It was fine. But it coulda been more with less, methinks.

This is a lovely story and well written but after a while it dragged a bit for me.

Tyler works as a bellboy in a Boston hotel. He has a girlfriend and gets by on his tips but he is drifting through life. Things begin to change when he finds Chris Raiden, a rock star, dead in his hotel room from an overdose.

A few days later Tyler realises that Chris Raiden is not only dead, he is also a ghost and is following Tyler around. As Tyler and Chris get to know each other and get used to their strange attachment to each other they begin to discover things about each other and they realise that they have to work together to see if they can help Chris to move on to what ever it is ghosts move onto.

But they begin to realise that there are other hidden things between them such as their bisexuality and growing attraction for each other. Together they decide to take a trip to LA so that Chris can resolve some of the difficult relationships of his past and so that Tyler can do something different and re awaken a hunger and enthusiasm for life within himself. With a bit of clouded guidance from some tarot cards they find themselves taking steps into the unknown together and developing a strong camaraderie and friendship but is there anything else for them beyond friendship and attraction, and can the living and the dead ever have a meaningful love together?

Overall it is a good story and interesting enough but it just didn't draw me in. It took both characters quite some time to get to the point where they could be honest about their bisexuality and I was bored by the discussions about previous girlfriends, and their attraction to girls. I think the first half of the story dragged for me and I was relieved to get to the end.

Having said this it is an ok story but it just doesn't have that spark for me. A good story and nice read, but not a great one.

This was a slow burn romance, and when I say slow burn, I mean snail-like or pedestrian. I was so fed up with it at one point, I just wanted to dnf, but I persevered and yes, I may have skimmed some of it, but I got there in the end.

Tyler is a bell boy which I think in English is a porter in a Boston hotel, Chris is the junkie hard rocker who dies on Tyler's watch in the hotel and then finds himself 'attached' to or possibly even haunting Tyler until they find a way to send him on to heaven/hell/wherever. I 'see' lots of use of tarot cards in their futures hehe, and I have to admit that that watery stuff did appear in my eyes on a couple of occasions.

Not a bad first effort from the author. 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars.

Brilliant.

This was surprisingly awesome. Not because I don't like the author's work, not at all, I just wasn't sure this would work for me, mostly because I'm just not all too crazy about "I fell in love with a ghost" kind of stories.

We first meet Tyler during a late night shift at the hotel, working his little bellboy ass off for Chris Raiden, the obnoxious rockstar who ordered a ridiculous late night snack. The story opens with Tyler running around the city in the middle of the night, searching for red seedless grapes. Relieved that he would keep his job, Tyler returns from his grape hunt, but instead of a big tip he finds Chris, the world famous rockstar, spread out on the floor and rather dead.

I immediately fell for Tyler. He’s very likable and actually quite endearing. He also got a bit of an attitude, which I totally dig. What did it for me was his voice; he’s just one of those guys, you know? A bit snarky but sweet. Not afraid of showing he’s afraid of something or speaking his mind. Speaks before he thinks, in general, which easily gets himself into trouble.

Then he meets Chris’s ghost two months later. They bicker and drive each other a little mad, but they’re adorable and entertaining. Their dialogue kills the entire thing, in a good way. A very good way. It’s funny and close to the line of being obnoxious but not crossing it. The line. I mean, I truly enjoyed the humor, I really did, and I’m quite picky with my humor =D Tyler and Chris were a lot of fun!

And. Oh, Chris. He’s got to be the most annoyingly charming ghost, ever.

I guess I was a bit surprised at the sweetness he was capable of. I expected Chris to be the pain in the ass, but it was Tyler who was more of a handful =D Chris is truly a good guy. He was hurting a lot and it was nice to see him finding closure.

I loved their chemistry from the start when they barely tolerated one another, then when they became friends and more. They are perfect for each other.

The story is quite predictable and simple but Chris and Tyler hit it off so good and they are both charming in their own way, it was a pleasure to follow their journey. Truly their dialogue was EVERYTHING. I don’t think I ever read a book with THAT much dialogue and it was wonderful.

Their romance was very slow-burn, but when they got their shit together I had already forgotten Chris was a ghost, which yes, was a bonus for me. It was well done indeed.

I'm not sure whether ghost!smex is a thing I can ever be truly be comfortable with, but when it's done right, like here, I actually enjoy it to a point. A great deal of me still thinks it's super odd though....

Awesome book indeed! I love Ghost MM books and Rock Star/Music MM books SO this book was perfect!
I loved both characters and their journey of forgiveness and love. And also So funny together!

The end ... even now i'm not quite sure what i was waiting for .. for sure my heart couldn't have handled anything less than a happy ending but maybe not one with a still a ghosty Christopher...

A book full of love that keep growing between Tyler and Chris day after day. I laughed with them but a cried also for them (a lot!) ... i ached for Tyler (falling for a ghost, poor guy) and for Chris too (died so young and in such a tragic way - the part with his sister and his best friend....so heartbreaking).

This book was a surprise, i didn't see it coming so thanks to Kade's review i discovered this interesting writer. So this is Lauren's first book? Please keep writing!!!!

Wonderful story!

“I would have loved you for the rest of my life.”

Working in a hotel, you are bound to find a lot of interesting things while cleaning up a guest’s room. Spare change, lost shorts, used…well, used you know what and let’s just leave it at that. What you don’t expect is to pick up is a ghostly hitchhiker. Especially the ghostly hitchhiker of a rock star you found dead in the room months earlier. (Although, if you were going to pick up a phantom stalker, it is probably gonna be the one you found dying on the hotel carpet, so be careful what corpse you walk in on, you don’t want to be stuck with a boring one!)

But despite not expecting it, Tyler Lindsey is now stuck with the ghost of the famous (junkie) rock star Chris Raiden. Heaven save him. Chis is annoying and persistent and too damn incorporeal to punch into silence (or to change the damn channels on Tyler’s tv). He is also, even more annoyingly, growing on Tyler. Slowly. Like a fungus, or over-dramatized soap operas about singing rodeo stars (or something).

Now to get rid of Chris, Tyler will have to cross the country to help his ghostly bestie to finish up a few last bits of unfinished business. And if he could do it all before he falls deeply and irrevocably in love with a man who he can never have in the most basic of ways…that’d be just great. Perfect. Awesome even.
“Stop that.”

“Stop what?” Chris asked, his eyes wide and ridiculously innocent.

“You know what, you crotch-nugget. The smiling. The grinning. The general aura of sexy rock star. It’s unfair and I have to go out in public now.” I crossed my arms.

Chris raised an eyebrow. “Did you just call me a crotch-nugget?”

“Fuck you,” I said again.

He laughed. “You keep me on my toes. That counts for something.”

What an amazing blend of humor, angst, and romance.

Despite the fact that Chris should have been just about everything I hate in a character he was not. He was sarcastic and a bit self absorbed and a bit of an ass. Strangely enough, that is why I liked him. He probably would have made an awful human being (at least at the beginning) but he sure does make one hell of a ghost.

And Tyler–-he who should probably just admit he is fan and let the fanboy be his guide–-is such a nice mix of snark and caring. If anyone can ever sympathize with a life that seemed to have gone off the rails for no good reason, it’d be me. Tyler doesn’t hate his job, but no one (or very very few people) make it a life’s ambition to be a bell-boy. For one, the tips can be kinda awful; for another, weird people tend to hit on you at random intervals. Yet when Chris pops into his life (literally) he starts to see what he is missing. Granted, some of what he is now missing is a full night’s sleep without a ghost yelling at him to get the Supernatural back up and running on the internet stream, but there are other things. Like fun. And someone in his life who is not a full on crazy bitch.

I like to think that if I ever was a ghost I would be like Chris, and if I was ever to run into a ghost I would be like Tyler (granted that said ghost was not also at that moment trying to drown me in a bathtub or rip my heart out thru my chest).

One of the great things about this book was the fact that these two guys (or one ghost and one guy) synced so well together. There were times when I almost had to restrain myself from flipping to the last few pages to see what was going to happen in the end. I needed to know that these two got something out of all this angst and pining. But I restrained myself (with much much difficulty) because working my way up to the end of their story was worth the wait.

And the few tears. Just like two. I wasn’t at all completely lost over that goodbye. Not at all. That’d be silly.

There isn’t a whole lot to this story plot wise but the characters, man the characters are just awesome. All of them. And I loved that these guys were both bi-–and how few fucks they really gave about it. It was just who they were. The romance between them is what is important. And it is a romance even if it took a while for them to realize.

This definitely scores all the marks from me. I had a blast reading it, and even though it is like 400+ pages the time practically flew by. It was damn hard to put down as well. Can’t recommend it enough. So much fun.

This book was simply amazing! One of the best paranormal books I've read that didn't involve shifters or vamps. It triggered all my emotions and that's the best way to read a book. I was laughing at times and reaching for the tissue at other times. And I just couldn't put the book down, dreading the end of the story and the end of the road for these two guys just as much as they were.

So Tyler is an average guy working as a bellboy. He is sent to deliver a meal to rock star Chris and finds him dead in his room from drug overdose. Some time later, Tyler finds the guy's ring and tries it on. Suddenly he's got a ghost attached to his being. Chris can't get more than twenty feet away. And of course, no one can see or him him except Tyler. What else can you do? Tyler and Chris embark on a journey to help Chris resolve his unfinished business so he can move on. But they didn't plan on falling in love.

Tyler really had issues with how Chris died, like he couldn't get over the drug use and constantly threw it back in Chris's face. So it was good to see Chris share that part of himself that he struggled with that made him turn to the drugs. We got to see that he wasn't some loser junkie, but someone struggling with his emotions and trying to deal with it the only way he felt he could. These guys were fun though and had me laughing a lot with their crazy banter and razzing each other.

And yeah, it squicked me out a bit their first time, because yeah, Chris is a ghost and he wasn't 100% solid, but the story was so well done, that I was easily able to overlook that weirdness.

Oh, how my heart broke for Tyler when they went to see Eric and he told Chris how it bothered him that Chris could touch Eric but not Tyler. OMG! I had to grab the tissues. And when they were saying their good-byes. It totally broke my heart.

"Just promise you'll be somewhere I can find you."

I think if Chris would have come back as someone else, it would have ruined the whole story for me. I love that he came back as himself.

This story was told completely from Tyler's POV in first person, but I didn't feel I was missing out on anything by not having Chris's POV. Tyler's POV provided enough of an outsider's perspective of Chris.

I'd love to see another book with what happens now and how they settle into life with one of them being a ghost.

This book is not a hurricane. It's not going to blow you away with violent intent. What it is though is soul stirring & maybe that is more real than any violence. It's a gentle breeze, butterfly kisses along your spine. It's a ghost story,it's a journey towards forgiveness,it's about a link between death & life. It's about love between ghost & man.

Yeah!..Give me the Beat Boys to free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock 'n soul and drift away
When my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
When I'm feeling blue
The guitar is coming through to soothe me...
Thanks for the joy that your giving me
I want you to know I believe in your song

Where to start? This book was outstanding. There you go, sweet, simple, and to the point. Fine, I’m starting from the beginning. We met Tyler Lindsey when he was out in a midnight food run for a hotel guest in which he worked as a bellboy– rockstar Christopher Raiden. The search set the chain of events that would bring the main characters together. Plus, it gave us the first inside on Tyler’s snarky personality and sense of humor. He had me in his pocket by the five percent mark. Sometimes, the first person POV’s can be hard to get used to, but Lauren figured out how to get the reader to be in Tyler’s shoes instead of looking awkwardly from the outside. And, pretty much, we stayed with him until the end of the book.

Finding Chris’s body, losing his good enough girlfriend, and being stuck in a low paying job were nothing in comparison to the roller coaster of events waiting to change Tyler’s life. Since their first conversation, Tyler and Chris had great chemistry, not only as a couple (later on) but as friends. They were both witty, sarcastic, and authentic. They said what they thought, without filters or apologies.

The majority of the story was about Tyler and Chris getting to know each other. Most times, doing or talking about day-to-day events and mundane topics. Which constituted their dating period, even when the characters were not aware. Their relationship was a slow-burn, and even when we didn’t get Chris’s POV, we learned and experienced his thoughts, feelings, and fears through Tyler. My only complaint would be about the way Tyler’s bisexuality came out of left field. It’s very present in the blur, but not dealt with until the last possible minute. Talking about sexuality. By the time they became a couple, they were ready to maul each other. Fortunately, their times together were more about their connection than anything else– still hot, but sweet, and emotional as well.

They tried to find solutions to their dilemma and a way to get Chris to move on, but nothing seemed to work. And the concept of solving unfinished business was the path they traveled. We got to see them interact with secondary characters, but none of them was relevant or interesting enough to want to know more about them. Except Chad, whom, hopefully, would be a bigger player in future stories.

The journey to California, and later to see Chris’s sister brought them closer and to the point the reader wanted to cheer for their HEA. Relaying Chris’s words to others was an intrinsical part of the story, and the author managed to make it interesting and more importantly, she kept repetitiveness to the minimum. The story was filled with dialogue and Tyler’s internal musings without dragging or making the reader want to skip to the next paragraph.

I hadn’t laughed or cried so much in a while. Tyler and Chris had a wicked sense of humor, but each independently from each other. They read as two distinct characters, and there was no confusion within their personalities. But, the last twenty percent of the story was a cry fest for me. The author made me believe in their story, their relationship, and how much they deserved the opportunity to be together after Chris had finished saying his good-byes–-an amazing endeavor for a new author. The last part was heart-crushing, but in the end, we get a hopeful HEA. Plus, the possibility of more.

Definitely, the first entry into my favorite books of 2016.

Tyler is adrift as a bellboy in a hotel when he runs into Chris – an emo rock-star who demands some grapes. After running around trying to find them he returns to find Chris dead of an overdose. After finding and wearing Chris’ ring, he finds that he – HIMSELF – is haunted by Chris.

Chris has unfinished business – don’t we all! – and demands that Tyler help him accomplish this.

Though the two start out as mostly enemies – Tyler’s girl leaves him when she accuses him of “letting” Chris (her idol) die – and Chris is narcissitic enough not to understand why Tyler isn’t more happy to help him – they end up developing a deep relationship that helps them both find more meaning in – ironically – life.

Eventually the story comes to it’s climax as Chris finishes his business on earth and things look like they’ll need to change again, the only question is how.

**
First, let me say that for a debut novel – or any freakin’ novel – this was amazingly well written. I was absolutely intrigued by the blurb and found the end result to be full of ALL the emotions: laughter, tears, anger, frustration, happiness, and love.

I loved the MCs and found their personal growth to be very touching.

I’m not a huge “ghost” fan – it’s hard to reconcile the whole “dead” thing with “happy ever after”, but I’ve read some books that did this very well (ie Motel. Pool by Kim Fielding) and the blurb hooked me.

In the end there were way more things that worked for me than not.

Things that worked for me: The writing is excellent. Very well developed characters. Intriguing plot line. “Believable” conversion of ghost into lover (and HEA). Great dialog. Hot smexy scenes. Loads of feels. Tons of funny/punny moments.

Only a few things that didn’t work for me: While I appreciated the slow burn, it was already a painful book to read – the guy is dead and we know it and without an absolutely huge magic wand or creepy zombie thing , he will remain dead – so I didn’t need MORE pain – so I didn’t like seeing the hurt on Chris’ face with the trials as Tyler got involved with other men and women. Limiting this would also help to shorten it a bit as it is fairly long and I’m not sure it needs to be this long. For example, there is a bit at the beginning that began to drag where the two are “learning” about each other but reluctant to share their sexuality and dancing around the subject that I think could have been shortened.

Those little niggles took this from a VERY SOLID 5 star read to a 4.5 star for me, but it’s really a great book and I do highly recommend it.

My Review:
Wow...my first MUST-READ of 2016! This book was so good...and so unexpected.

But be warned...neither of these guys are good hero material when the book begins. In fact, that first chapter or so, I was really wondering if I would be able to keep reading. Tyler has a girlfriend who treats him AWFUL, but he sticks with her because she's a hot lay. Yeah...UGH! Serious...ugh. Then Chris is a drugged out, diva rockstar who overdoses and dies. See...I told you. When the book begins I didn't want either one of these guys to find their happy. They definitely weren't what I would consider good hero material.

But then the story went on and I fell in love with them as they both grew and evolved and cried as I realized there was no way this book could end happily. Um, did you catch that one of them is a ghost? Yeah, pretty much impossible. BUT...wow, Lauren Sattersby manages a perfect ending that made me so happy.

But before that they have to learn how to live together. Because Chris can't get more then 20 feet away from Tyler...ever. So they are together 24/7...and no one else can see or sense Chris, which causes a lot of difficulties for Tyler. There's just something a little bit crazy about having whole conversations with people that aren't really there. But then they begin to bond over things like Supernatural. :)

There were so many scenes that had me laughing out loud throughout the book and then by the end, I was literally sobbing with tears running down my cheeks. The story is beautiful and I truly loved it. This also appears to be Lauren Sattersby's first novel. Can I just say, "Wow!" She has an incredible writing future in front of her because I am a definite new fan.

If the story appeals, go buy it. It's just as good (or actually even better) than the story description makes it sound. Definitely an early contender for my top ten list for the year.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review, but I am preordering a print copy of it for my keeper shelf. Because I can guarantee you that this will be a book that I will re-read over and over again.

I think one word that can really sum up this book is 'sweet'. It has an original plot, likable characters and it's hard to put down (even when it's almost 4am and you should really go to sleep). You'll sometimes find yourself thinking "how can this happen", "this is so weird", "how is this going to work", but you get past that pretty quickly because the way it's written and explained is amazing, at least I did.
This book is definitely the break I needed from all the sad, deep, complex ones I've been reading. My opinion might be a bit biased because I've always loved the idea of ghosts, but yes, I recommend this book.
(PS: it does have explicit adult content, so if you're not into that just, watch out)

Loved the dialogue between these two and the unique premise for the story. The interactions with secondary characters were heartbreaking and heartwarming in parts but I loved how each interaction pushed Tyler and Chris along their path together. I wasn't sure about some bits (bar and Eric) while reading. In the middle, it seemed like the story wandered a bit but all's well that ends well and the HEA here was sweet. I will definitely look for more from this author in the future.

Tyler is a bell boy who when taking a room service order to a famous rock stars' hotel room is confronted by his dead body.
A few weeks later Tyler is going back to the room for another reason and is met by the ghost of the celebrity, Chris.
An interesting tale with Tyler being stuck with Chris and the 2 go around making amends before Chris can move forward.
I laughed and yes, I sobbed during the final chapters.
This is a new author to me and I will certainly be reading more.

A really solid paranormal romance although it was a bit too long and the ending felt rushed but over all it's a 2 thumbs up!

Let me get something off my chest. I don't like stories with ghosts. But I couldn't resist reading this after seeing all the interesting reviews. And as I was ugly crying somewhere about 90% in, I knew that I'd have to eat my words about ghost stories (or at least this one.)

Neither MC is particularly angelic. Tyler works as a bellboy because he gave up on a college education due to a family emergency and just never went back. He stays with a mildly psychotic girlfriend just because she's hot. One night he discovers the dead body of rock star Chris who shot up a fatal amount of heroin. As you can tell, Chris is definitely no angel. Several months later Tyler revisits the penthouse room where Chris died and realizes that he suddenly has a ghost attached to him who only he can see and hear. Thus begins the story of the odd couple. Chris, despite coming from humble beginnings, is now used to the privileged rock star life. (After all, the story starts out with Tyler running around town trying to find seedless red grapes in the middle of winter.) Living with Tyler in a studio apartment is quite a change of pace. Despite not knowing why the two of them are tethered together, they figure that Chris needs to say some goodbyes to the people in his life. Problem is that two of them live in LA (Tyler is in Boston) and he doesn't have the means to just fly across country. So in the meantime, the two of them get to know one another, and therein lies the beauty of this slow burn romance. Especially as neither comes right out and states his bisexuality early in the story.

I fell in love with these characters. Chris, who died tragically young, was unhappy in life and finds happiness after death. And Tyler, who's living a half-life until Chris comes along, begins to live again during the course of the story. The ending, though improbable, was perfectly in keeping with the rest of the story and it only dimmed my enjoyment of the overall story slightly. Highly recommended to those who love ghost stories, and those who love reformed rock stars and snarky bellboys.

The first five reviews I’ve read of this book heaping praises for the author and the story is not just some sort of ploy to ask the audience to buy the book. I mean, yes it would definitely encourage them good ol’ folks to check out the book but let me give it to you straight – THIS BOOK IS JUST ALL KINDS OF AWESOME!!!! I can’t even…

The story starts with Tyler Lindsey, a regular guy who works as a bellboy and has a wicked-awful girlfriend. His life took a turn when he discovered famous rock star Chris Raiden dead after he od’d on heroin. After a couple of months, Chris’s ghost materialized that seems to be stuck with Tyler.

Rock N Soul is a wonderfully easy read. Everything about Tyler and Chris – their situation, their banter and the uber-awesome chemistry between them just totally struck a chord with me. They are so likable from the get-go so it’s easy to just eat up their story. Tyler is so freaking regular that you’d relate to him right away regardless of the ghost haunting. And that’s what I loved so much about him. He’s an easy character – practical, blunt and just an all-around guy.

Chris on the other hand is charming to the bones! There’s something childlike about his character. Perhaps, it’s because he’s a spoiled superstar but beyond all the glamour, glitter, the drugs and all – he’s just someone who needs someone to love him. And with those characteristics, you can’t help but root him!

As for the story, it’s actually pretty simple but the dialogues made it so fascinating it’s like re-watching your favorite film where you know everything about it, scenes that were about to unfold but at the end of it, you are still very much satisfied. Rock N Soul is that kind of film…err book.

The conclusion I won’t tell of course but right after the last page, I’m all ready for a sequel. It’s that kind of awesome!

‘Tis a 5-star rocking book to start your year!

I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This novel was a heck of a lot of fun. Tyler is a guy stuck in a rut, not sure where he's going in life and not able to muster enough energy to pull himself up and follow his goals. Chris is a drop-dead gorgeous (see what I did there?) rock star who oh-so-inconveniently dies on Tyler's shift at a Boston hotel... and then proceeds to haunt Tyler until he can say his goodbyes.

This novel is sure to lift your spirits. Tyler is sarcastic, Chris is "a huge dweeb" masquerading as a sexy rock star, and the ghost puns had me laughing so hard that I almost gave myself a boo-boo. (Sorry. Not sorry.)
“That’s the spirit,” I said, then smirked. “Get it? Spirit? Because you’re a ghost.”

Romances with ghosts are usually not my thing because they always seem so futile unless some miracle happens for the couple to end up together in the end. The ending of this story left me a bit unsure if I really liked it or not, but the journey to get there was really entertaining. I definitely enjoyed the writing style of the author. The characters were well developed with a lot of snarky banter and humor but they also had to do a lot of personal growth as they fell in love. The slow burn romance was written well and believable since Chris was a ghost. The ending though...I'm glad that it was happy, but it still made me sad.

3,5 Stars

The thing about a ghost-human love story is that even though I enjoyed reading this book (really liked it) I can only think of these stories as HFN. What about the future? What will happen later? How is this story sustainable? These are the types of questions I keep thinking about - and I have a lot of trouble with this. Regardless, I think the author did very well with how these two got together.

I look forward to her upcoming books.

Cute story. I'm still not sure I believe in the longevity of the couple, though I do believe in the romance. I feel like the ending isn't really resolved. It's like the author had no idea how to let them end up together, and just said "Oh well they do. The end." I wish the logistics had been explained a little more. I want to know how they function in the real world. But aside from that, the story is good. The plot is a little bit meaningless. But the journey was fun.

Tyler is stuck with the ghost of Chris Raiden ( mega famous musician ) who wants the two of them to go and right all his wrongs so he can move on , and of corse they fall for each other and of course I'm not saying how it ends

I finished this story, but really, it's boring. Seriously, eyerollingly, boring. It's not that either Chris or Tyler are dull people, but they aren't truly all that interesting either. Nothing happens in the plot, there's no mystery to hold the attention, no tension beyond some petty jealousy (zzzzz), and we don't even get a traditional haunting either. I got to the 70%+ mark and checked the ending just see if anything will come of them being together.

I nearly DNF'd this book thanks to Chris's proclivities regarding porn. Really? Did we really need that scene in the book? NOPE. It's gross and really, really, nasty (and, yeah, I know, it's relatively mild compared to some) to have the characters discussing such things. I persevered out of sheer bloody mindedness, however, but as far as good reading? Not really.

More a 3.5
This story started well, the development followed some expected paths but it was going very well, several emotional moments in there too.
The end, though, left a lot to be desired. It felt incomplete and unsuitable, a bit too out there, even though one of the main characters is a ghost, so the choices "out of the rules" shouldn't be so surprising, but the end was not one I think is adequate.

PROS:
- What Tyler did to his cousin, Chad, he try to reach out for him
- Tyler friendship with Gemma
- Tyler is quite likeable guy

CONS:
- Too long
Yes, the dialogues were entertaining but it's too much, I felt tired after sometimes and just skipped it. This book was 400 more pages and it felt longish with unnecessary dialogues and scenes.

- The Ending
I didn't consider that ending as happy ending, there's no happy ending between human-ghost relationship, really. It's hopeless, futureless, impossible. The human will grow and change, while the ghost is eternal.
