Lieutenant Tamryn Pavlenko wants to make a name for herself in the GalCon Fleet, so naturally she requests an assignment on the infamous Frost Station Alpha, where pirate attacks are a way of life. The remote research outpost holds secrets that many are willing to kill for, and Tamryn is prepared to protect it from brigands, mobsters, and mercenaries—or whatever the galaxy throws at her.
The brochure, however, failed to mention the genetically engineered super humans who were supposed to have all been killed in a war that ended more than a century ago. It seems they’re not only alive, but they want the station. Oh, and one of them decides he wants Tamryn too.
This powerful warrior might be sexy and intriguing, but he was bred to kill, and she can’t let herself forget that he’s the enemy.

This was everything I desire in a sexy sci-fi. Well, actually there could have been more sexy times, but I FULLY expect that to happen in later installments so I'm waiving that requirement this time. The hints of sexiness gave me hope, see? HOPE THAT THERE WOULD BE WILD SPACE-LOVIN' IN MY FUTURE!
Flat out, a well-written sci-fi romance excites me beyond belief. Ruby Lionsdrake has done that in spades. We have a remote outpost, the possibility of space pirates (SPACE PIRATES!), a strong woman who's looking to make a name for herself, and a group of super humans who look to have been put in a terrible situation by those in charge.
BLISS!
I am so on board for the future installments of this series. SO ON BOARD. (but not literally, because I'd be one of the first to die in a space ship attack, I'm sure.)
I'll give an actual review after this serial wraps up (in September), but I feel a bit..squick about the fact she's his prisoner and almost from the first moment his thought has been "I want to have sex with her". Like literally all of Makk's thoughts are either:
a) I want to screw her b) I wonder if I can make her like me? c) fantasizing about screwing her
As a slight spoiler its not until the THIRD PART he even gets around to explaining to her why his people felt a need to attack this super secret but every pirate in the 'verse attacks it every chance they can base.
Which let comment on the fact that this base is supposed to be civilian and protected by the military because the secrets may be useful to the military. As I understand it this base is used as the "you've made the wrong High End Officer upset" command post. All the screw ups who haven't quite been bad enough to get thrown out of the military wind up here. On this super important, supposedly secret base. That is constantly attacked by pirates and mercenaries. The turn over rate must be INSANE but more importantly THIS BASE ISN'T SECRET.
If the military felt a compelling reason to protect it they should just move it to a base more easily defensible. Not leave it stranded at the ass end of the 'verse where getting help is unlikely and the closest planet is barely inhabitable if you wear a suit of specialness. Someone remarks later that no one thought anyone would come out this far. Except they have (repeatedly on what amounts to a possible rumor) and if the base has the reputation to send the fuck-ups to it already, that sounds like its had enough time for the military to figure out a better way to protect it.
Unless the military didn't really WANT to protect it and this is all a clever subterfuge to guard the planet JUST IN CASE some of Makk's super soldier buddies survived from 150 years (which they have no possible way of knowing). Possible, since this will be six parts (I guess roughly 24 chapters?) long, but seems overly complicated since Makk's people take out everyone except a few soldiers, Tamryn (a new officer with zilch experience doing anything but circumventing her father's reasonable demands) and all the civilian scientists you can shake a stick at.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
when I read the reviews for this book I wasn't expecting much, but after I read it I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed by the MCs. they we determined in their beliefs and the heroine actually had a brain (that she used BTW). the hero was an alpha without being a total jerk. I really liked Makkon's personality: tough but compassionate too. this book belongs in my favs list.
Frost Station Alpha was published in six parts, with new episodes available each week, and should not be read as a standalone. It is available as a Complete Series (Frost Station Alpha, #1-6). This said the following review is for the complete installment. Genetically optimized human race was nuked when the government saw them as a threat. Some of them survived in cryogenic chambers to wake up 150 years later and find themselves starving on a destroyed moon, thus some men go on a bloody mission to blackmail the government for help. They kill all soldiers and kidnap the scientists as well as a communications officer on a nearby space station. While this story definitely does not speak for a very nice group of people, and I have morally a hard time to excuse the decision to kill so many innocent people, the action and romance where just great. Well done!
This is a review of the novel as a whole because it was released in short sections.
I absolutely loved that the heroine didn’t let her attraction to the other lead character, her adversary in a violent conflict that didn’t sugarcoat anything, over-ride her internal motivations (mostly).
The author created a nuanced conflict that let the reader emphasize with both sides and didn’t make it overly easy for the heroine to forget that her counterpart participated in killing her comrades, but showed the gradual process of realizing the attack was a bid for self-preservation.
Lieutenant Tamryn Pavlenko doesn’t want her famous family influence to make her life too easy so she takes a job on Frost Station Alpha. It’s the kind of place where rebellious officers are sent as punishment. Within three weeks of her arrival the station is attacked by people she has never seen before. All their tech is out of a museum and she’s starting to think they are genetically engineered super humans; a process that was outlawed more than a century ago. But her most pressing problem is that she’s caught the eye of their leader. Hunt Leader Makkon Starson has been asleep for a hundred and fifty years. But he’s awake now. *** It’s part one of a serial so it’s only 78 pages but there are a lot of things that don’t make sense to me right now. If the scientists and the artifacts on the station are so important, why the heck are they in the middle of nowhere; a place where they get constant pirate attacks? There is an attraction between the two main characters and I know it’s romance genre but it squicks me. He’s got all the power. She can’t give real consent. Maybe some of my questions will be answered in the next part. Onward… 3 stars
This is part one of the serialized book Frost Station Alpha. I am delighted that this book has an actual plot beyond the sexual exploits of the characters. The plot revolves around a space research station and it's attack. The book is well written and the characters are complex and engaging.
