This is the book for M.M. Meleen’s second tarot deck that she has designed herself. And in many ways it was a more successful project than her previous Rosetta Deck. This time, she has created bigger illustrations that have been shrunk down. This allowed her to put in more details. Also, how the cards relate to each other has been emphasised. Especially with the Pip and Court cards that include visual elements from the trump cards that influence them in the design itself. This makes these cards especially suited for the study of Tarot. The book itself is full of further small revelations about the interconnectedness of the cards. It heavily quotes Aleister Crowley, who’s Thoth Deck has heavily influenced the design and structure of the Tabula Mundi Tarot. This is not to say that the Tabula Mundi is a Thoth clone. Far from it! But it does follow Crowley’s school of magick, and is heavily influenced by Thelema. Still M.M. Meleen manages to put her own spin. Adding modern touches such as making the Magus a cosmic DJ, and having the Chariot surfing a wave. This is especially evident in the Pips, which try to convey the meaning of the cards in a more conceptual, narrative manner, much like the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot Pips. The full book goes beyond the “little white book” included with the deck in that it shows the research and theory behind her designs for each card. She points out the astrological and Qabalistic influences at play, and accompanies them with mythical anecdotes that illustrate the ideas at play. There is also a lot of comparisons with the Thoth, RWS and her previous Rosetta Tarot designs to show similarities and differences in conveying the same ideas. The Tabuli Mundi Tarot is a “serious” Tarot deck designed with magickal working in mind. And the book is highly recommended to get the most out of this deck if you are lucky enough to own a copy!
