Let me just start this off by saying that this book had me in tears by the end of it. I loved this book, a lot and I absolutely hated that it was the last one in the series!

There was a lot of action in this book, more so than the first two, and so it begins with Harrowers appearing and attacking Tink and Audrey, and all hell breaks loose since it's the first attack in months since the whole fiasco with Gideon and Iris and Susannah in the last book. A lot of things happen, and there really isn't a lot of room for explanation of the things that had happened, it basically picks up from the last book, so if you go into this book without reading the first two in a while, be prepared to be confused. Of course, after a few chapters you'll start remembering and then you'll become so engrossed in the story you won't want to put it down.

It was nice to revisit the same characters again, I liked the fact that Leon and Audrey a little more screen time in this book but of course they spent it fighting most of the time. When do they ever not argue? But still there were a lot of sweet moments and funny parts that had me loving this book even more.

Another important character in the book was Gideon/Verrick. Without going into too much detail, thus potentially spoiling things, I admit I was horrified and I shed a few tears when it happened to Gideon. I thought it was unfair what happened to him, and it had my heart breaking in two by the end of it, the final showdown between Audrey and Verrick. I admit that I didn't want a super sugarcoated happy ending because that would have been unrealistic and in a battle as big as this was, there was bound to be people dying for the greater good. In the end, I was glad that Gideon came back to himself but not fully satisfied that he didn't come back at all like he said:
"Maybe we'll meet again"

But either way, it satisfied the ending, everything was meant to happen like this but it still left a few answered questions. Like, would Audrey ever get her powers back? And what about Leon? Was the Guardian in him still called to protect her or did it vanish with her last bout with Verrick? And what about her relationship with her unsealed father? Where did things go after Verrick was defeated?

Despite all the questions, I still liked the book quite a lot and I would definitely reread this series over and over again. I had my share of laughs, tears, and well round of emotions throughout the series, especially Leon finally opening up about his past and his parents to Audrey, and that ending with Audrey reading his cards to him just about brought me to tears for him, but I knew everything was going to be okay. Now, I wouldn't mind reading a novella about them, or a different series in the same universe, preferably in Leon's POV so we can finally see how much he cares about Audrey and you know other stuff about being a Guardian and all that, but for now I'm content with the ending, and hope for more books in the future by this author!

Only ebook edition. Crap. Just crap.

Update (5/23/2015)

Fire Fall is the last installment to the Dark Star trilogy. Now, I'm greatly disappointed that this book is only in ebook format. Because I prefer to read this book hardcopy. The previous two novels are in hardcover, and they have very pretty covers. Anyway, I'm so excited to read the conclusion to Audrey Whitticomb's story. There is definitely something dramatic going on, and from the beginning, I'm sucked into the story.

The world building is good. The author (and the book) easily reminds me of what Audrey's world is like. Harrowers are powerful demons, and the Kin fights them to protect the innocent (but at what cost?). Audrey's mother is a superhero who wears a hoodie with a star on her back. Oh, and she also fights demons (she is Kin). Leon can teleport, and he is a great guardian/boyfriend. Audrey has her amplification powers, and she can see some parts of her creepy and dark future. She also has an insane cousin. Did I miss anything?

I have to say that is a pretty decent recap.

Audrey is still fighting Harrowers. She is kicking butts, and she isn't one to lay down and let people stomp all over her. As usual, she remains the best. There isn't a lot of emotional moments, though I do like the dialogue she shares with Leon. There is a lot of drama there, and I most certainly love their interactions. Anyway, Audrey unfortunately doesn't have as much character development as the previous books, but she does have her great moments.

Leon is the awesome boyfriend. Audrey and Leon are definitely in the relationship state of "I don't know if this is going to work out or not." Bethany Frenette can easily pull off those parts and make it seem like there is (emotional) danger for the golden couple.

The ending is very, very satisfying. Although there is some death, somehow there is a lot of hope. A lot of hope. I think most readers will like the ending. Yes, it is a mostly "Happily Ever After." There are some sad parts, but I think it is worth reading Fire Fall (and this trilogy).

Overall, Fire Fall is an amazing ending to the Dark Star trilogy. It brings a lot of drama and tension while managing to keep its somewhat upbeat attitude. Audrey is amazing, and Leon is even more awesome. The moments of "is this right or wrong?" is perhaps one of the best parts of the book. The trilogy, in conclusion, is worth a read.

Rating: Four out of Five

Welp. It's over.
And now I'm just sad.

I could get all technical about the writing, about the telling instead of showing, about the info-dumps, about the sometimes slow pacing, but I just can't.

Because this series is just so heartfelt and such a joy to read. Because the characters are wonderful and brave and flawed but good and their relationships are those of people who actually support and love one another even when they're being little shits or making mistakes or fighting demons.

There's nothing spectacularly original or unique or thematic here.
But that is more than okay. Because what there is is a simplicity and honesty I wish I found in more YA books.

Seriously one of my favorite series and it deserves so much more love. One day I'm going to write a proper review in an attempt to accurately convey just how great these books are.

Audrey is a stubborn and funny narrator who came into her own among her "super" peers. There were some plot twists that happened that I didn't expect but I liked. Frenette didn't make it easy for her characters to get to the end and there was plenty of action. Some of the character deaths were less meaningful because some of them were only named after their deaths. I liked the world she created and I would have liked to see more of it, especially the other guardians (but that would have slowed the plot down).
All in all, it was a satisfying conclusion to a severely underrated series. I would definitely recommend this series to my older students.

📚 Tercer libro de la saga Dark Star.
Contiene SPOILERS!!!!

There have been only a handful of series I was pained to complete. The most well known in recent history was Skulduggery Pleasant, which resulted in an entire post sharing the stages of saying goodbye to series, and once again, I find myself going through those stages with Dark Star - heartbreak, obsession, admission and guilt have all passed me by, and now, with Fire Fall, I can remember what it was that drew me into this fabulous world with wonderful characters, relationships that just mean so much and a plot that, though short, was amazing. I could not be happier with how Frenette ended this series, and I'm so going to miss it.

One of the most wonderful things about this entire series has been it's characters, and Fire Fall made having to say goodbye to these characters almost worth it through it's relationships, growth, development and oh so realistic emotions. These characters, they are people you know, they are friends and family, they have so much depth, so many different layers, they have mood swings and have arguments and have flour fights and fall asleep in their cereal and you cannot help but love them all the same. The relationships that Frenette has written in this series are just beautiful, and I'll say what I said in Dark Star, and in Burn Bright - Audrey and Lucy's Mother/Daughter relationship is the most beautiful, the most fabulous, the most hilarious, most relatable and most in-depth relationship I have ever read, and that is not a statement I make lightly. They look out for one another, care so passionately for one another, leave notes on the fridge to remind each other to eat, share romantic struggles and hurdles and know how to have a right giggle, and yet, throughout it all, Lucy is the best mother, whether she's running around saving the world, or having double-date nights with her daughter - she is the mother whom, if I didn't already have a fabulous one myself, I'd be adopting her.

Audrey also has the best relationships with her friends, Tink and Gideon. Sure, Audrey made a few (pretty major) mistakes in Fire Fall, but I could 100% relate to the decisions she made and why. Could you really murder one of your best friends for a chance at saving the world? I can't be so sure, and that's what made Audrey's complicated relationships and her love for them so real. her loyalty and protectiveness over Gideon was beautiful, and her friendship with Tink was jut fabulous. Everybody needs a sassy best friend who shows you up in all black, flirts with all the boys and kicks ass in a shocking pair of heels, and I've got to say, alongside Audrey, Tink has some of the best development throughout Dark Star - from zero to hero, Tink rocked her scenes and showed herself to be one of the best characters in this novel, and I love her so dearly. It's physically impossible to not mention Leon and Audrey's relationship either - and sure, they had their struggles, and those too have been realistic and their development and background so painful, especially finally getting some more on Leon and his parents and - just let me hold you Leon, but there romance is just so damn adorable and so damn sexy and hotttttttt and there's nothing I love more than those two cherubs smushing their faces into each other. Their passion, their protectiveness, their care and attentiveness, their trust and their overwhelming desire to be there for each other is so absolutely one of the best things in this series, and they could very well by my favourite romance of all time. That's right, of all time people, beat that!

It was so wonderful to finally see the plots of Dark Star and Burn Bright come together in Fire Fall too. Each novel felt as though it developed and created two halves of a story, and Fire Fall brought these two halves together and smashed my expectations out of the water. The creep factor went up ten-fold, the paranormal aspects where just as awesome has they have been previously, and impressively, the world building in this book went up a notch too - something the series has previously struggled with before. The action, the dramatic nature of the scenes, the slow development and reveal of all things horrifying and super duper amazing - I don't think I've cried as passionately as I did when I finished Fire Fall, both for it's heart-breaking ending and actually finally saying goodbye, there's literally nothing about this novel I could fault, and that makes me insanely proud.

This series is without a doubt one of my all-time favourites. Urban Fantasy is a genre so overwhelmed by Cassandra Clare and other demon-related series, but Dark Star is a diamond in the rough, and man, I wish more people knew about it's sheer brilliance. With characters that are so real and so easy to love, with a world and premise that just sounds awesome and is executed brilliantly, and relationships that just melt your heart and make your howl with laughter - how can you not want to read this series? Fire Fall is definitely a tough novel to get your hands and is only available limitedly in ebook, but please, do not let this put you off trying a fabulous series. I could not recommend this series more - it's fabulous, it's amazing, it's a paranormal lovers dream come true, and it's absolutely, 100%, perfect for you.

The only question that I have is:
CAN WE GET A NOVELLA about Audrey and Leon??
Please please please, with cherry rainbow sprinkles and whatever you like on top?? Pretty please with an adorable puppy dog face??

So, firstly I'll start by saying that these books are one of my top favorite series and I'm pretty sure they will stay there....
I absolutely enjoyed the books and this one was bittersweet because I'm sad that it's ending but I'm soo glad we get a conclusion because I really wanted to know what would happen and I'm so upset that this book didn't get published in hardcover because this is a GREAT series and deserves to be published. I'll keep my fingers crossed though....

1) The first thing that I'll talk about is Character's POV
I absolutely adored Audrey and I really saw development in her character and I saw her grow and develop through the series and I saw depth in her character. I saw that she's vulnerable and has her fears which made her more real and you could see that she was a teenager and well she acted like a teenager. (That means the good and the bad)I liked that the author didn't create a perfect, unbeatable superhero but gave them flaws and made them look and feel real which is one of the things that make a superhero in my book. I can relate to Audrey and their are some decisions I would have made so yeah I thought this was AWESOME.

2)The next and most swoon worthy thing is LEON Oooh Leon, how I love thy. I saw Leon and understood him more and obviously you saw their relationship grow and develop more. BTW the makeout scenes were HOT!! I saw more of him and we saw who he really was instead of just Audrey guardian and boyfriend. The things he would do for her and vise versa leave you speechless. Audrey you must share Leon♥♥ He's perfectly imperfect which makes him perfect for me :)
P.s: I love the name Leon, for some reason. Just do.

3) The plot
The whole book was interesting and the plot was very unique. It attracted me and sucked me in. Yes, I read this book way past midnight and I had school the other day... took me about 7 or 8 hours to read this book. No joke.
One thing I LOVE about this series is that it's unique and I haven't read many books about superhero's and it's safe to say that this series was my first one. I'll also admit that I never thought that I'd read paranormal books because they are wayyy out of my comfort zone which are cute fluffy Contemporaries or Romance, Fiction or Fantasy.
I can't say much more without giving away spoilers but the book made me happy...

4) The friendship and the trust
I love how much trust the people have in each other and how much they are willing to sacrifice for the people they love. It so heartwarming and touching that you will feel emotional because in real life you'll only meet few people with such qualities. I'm not saying that their aren't, just saying everyone you meet won't be like that at least in cough...high school...cough but their are some amazing people :)

5) Do I really need a 5th reason for why I love this book?
I just do, OKAY? Okay. It's the epitome of unique (in a good way) And can we just discuss the cover. Like, BEAUTIFUL. Major credit to why I picked up this series in the first place.
(Scratches head and says: "yeah, I judge books by their covers."
Hangs head in shame. Guilty as charged. I know I shouldn't but I really do. But come on the COVER WAS PERFECT AND SO WAS THE BOOK!!!!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

One of my favorite quote/chapter
"You're a brat" he said
"You're a suck-up" I countered
"You're a smartass..."

I love their relationship ♥♥♥

TREMENDA SAGA! ♥

I enjoyed the series, and liked the conclusion. I thought the characters and story built with each addition. Other's don't seem to quite agree, but oh well.

Gideon-
So everything comes down to this. Gideon realizes who he really is and gets dragged into the struggle. I know other people don't like how his story ended. So, we know he's Vinnick, and now he remembers. But he isn't the big bad here. He really doesn't do a lot. In fact, in the end he refuses to hurt his friends, and when given the choice he's the real hero. He saves everyone and banishes the baddies. It's not a happily ever after, but ultimately I feel like it's the best that could be expected. he actually got to decide his own fate, more than any other Harrower could.

Audrey-
I love how she's written. In the entire series I can only think of one time her appearance is commented on by another person- and that is when Leon thinks she looks good dressed up to go out to eat. That is so refreshing! A main character who's chief virtue is not her stunning features?! Ultimately it is kinda Audrey that saves the day, but you don't spend three books reading about how she's the chosen one. She has frizzy hair and wears sweats, my kind of girl.

Leon and Audrey-
I love them together. They argue, of course. But they make up. I loved when Leon tells her he's mad, but of course he loves her. It's never in question really. He's extremely protective, but he's not allowed to be a bossy brute like in most books. They protect each other, and isn't that a better model?

I am so glad that I stumbled upon this gem of a series. It's not perfect, but I found it so highly enjoyable. I loved Audrey as a main character. She's sassy and funny and very relatable. She's genuinely flawed, which makes her three-dimensional. I found all of her choices extremely understandable, even when I saw the messes they were going to create, which is much more tolerable than heroines who make stupid decisions for no particular reason. I loved, loved, loved her relationship with Leon. I found the romance very swoony and fun. It moved at exactly the right pace and included some great banter and realistic conflict. I also loved her relationship with her mom. All the secondary characters were well-developed and interesting. The author took some real risks that helped the book to avoid a lot of cliches, and I never knew exactly where things were going, even when I thought I did. I highly recommend this series for anyone looking for a well-plotted fantasy with a strong heroine and cute love interest.
