The ending is the best part. It overcame all of the "IF...THENs"* that had me decided on not continuing the series until then. Pages 41 (of 48) drops a shocker that highly piqued curiosity then comes a cliffhanger type "how's he gonna..." which assured my continued participation- but still only if it's at the right price.
*Like "IF she could... THEN how couldn't she...?" or "IF he's a billionaire THEN how does nobody recognize him" or "IF they got the keys for leg restraints THEN why couldn't the handcuffs be removed?" You get the point but those are just the one's on the top of my head- I could go on if I leafed back...
In the second issue of Golden City, we follow the misadventures of Harrison Banks. In the last issue, he was arrested for "murdering" the Jackal, a smuggler in cahoots with Mifa and her band of orphans. Harrison's secretary sold him out to the mysterious evil corporation we don't know the name of yet, and they have replaced him with a doppelganger. Mugged as a criminal, the Police was about to transfer him to prison, when Mifa intervenes and saves him. At the same time, a professional assassin is also involved in this, and her goal is to quickly assassinate Harrison before word of him goes out. At the same time, the Jackal returns to the orphans and holds them at gunpoint, set on killing Mifa as she was the one to rat him out to Harrison Banks in the first place...
This second issue picks up speed, and unites the beautiful drawings of the first issue (Daniel Pecqueur really loves the blues and hues of the ocean!) with a nice political and industrial intrigue. No motives are known yet, but it seems to be about big money, as Harrison Banks is not only the president of the Golden City, but also incredibly wealthy. The main characters start to emerge, with Mifa being little more than an opportunistic girl for now, and Harrison Banks being a bit too good for my taste. The evil corporation woman seems to have a lot of contacts, while the Jackal seems to be a really resourceful adversary... one who's real face still hasn't been seen. Lets hope this keeps up like this!
Although the action scenes are good and he plot is on track the characters remain flat. The main character doesn't even care about his dead wife for example. Also couldn't a simple blood-test show hes the real person?
