Adrift #2

Sundown

Rate this book
Having survived the massacre aboard the doomed cruise ship Oceanus, all Dan Bellamy wants is peace; a chance to go home and attempt to put his life - and his mind - back together. He's not going to get it. Dragged back to the UK by the remaining members of the Rennick family, Dan finds himself once more pitched into a nightmare. Vampires are rising, gathering in force for an assault on London which could blow the secret of their existence wide open, and Dan's captors are convinced that he alone holds the key to defeating them. Dan knows he has some strange connection with the creatures. Trouble is, as chaos erupts on the streets and the bodies begin to pile up around Dan, it looks like the vampires know it, too...

An outstanding sequel!

I contacted the author and I received a copy of this book in exchange of a honest review.

This is the second novel in the “Adrift” trilogy.

THE WORLD GOT LARGER

In the first book, Adrift, the story is developed in a luxury passenger cruise, and you really feel trapped there…

…now the story is expanded to London, a whole city,…

…and yet, you really feel trapped there too!

Not matter that you have a whole city where to run, since darkness is everywhere, and the true offspring of it are everywhere too.

Stay in the light.

But that simple advice won’t be easy to follow since the stakes are bigger, and the menace got larger.

So, now the safety of a passenger list isn’t in risk, but a whole city, where the population hasn’t a chance…

…or maybe they do have ONE chance…

…Dan Bellamy.

EVERYBODY WANTS DAN

Dan Bellamy isn’t normal, he knows that but hardly he could imagine how really special was…

…and now everybody is after him!

And in this story, isn’t so simple as a “good” side and an “evil” side, oh no!

There are a lot of sides, different sides, but neither is any “really good”…

…even you can take for granted Dan, since he has suffered a lot, and remained “good” isn’t in his priorities anymore.

Also, Dan is starting to get the hang of his “special skills” but hardly is all that is…

…Dan’s personal world is getting larger too.

CHAOS UNDER CONTROL

In other works by K.R. Griffiths, the author, I have mentioned his technique to control chaos, or in better words, his mastery to use in the precise way the “chaos theory”, where you can’t control what will happen,...

...but he can control when the chaos will get loose, and trust me that he knows to pick his moments with surgical precisión and in that way, you can’t predict what will happen,...

...even when you think that you already finished with the book!

And remember…

Stay in the light!

They live in the dark, underground for centuries, sleepin in hibernation only to send three out to hunt...they are vampires, but not you sparkle vampires that whine or are afraid of there shadow or afraid of blood, not these vampires...they won't seduce you with cheap romance or mind rape you (but they do have the mind tricks to make you kill 8 ne another)...no these vampires are highly humanoid with talons on both there feel...but they are not afraid of anything but one man...but I won't give anymore away...

But I will say this: read Adrift first then read this one because if you jump to the second one you won't understand what's happening...if your sick and tired of sparkle vampires then this is for you but if you hate gore and suspense then go by twilight...because this book is full of both...these vampires would rip apart Edward and his group...I give this 5 sharp teeth put of 5

I have long been a big fan of K.R. Griffiths and he delivered another awesome read. I did get this book as a gift in exchange for a review which I am more than happy to provide. This is the second book in the Adrift series and I would strongly suggest, if you have not read book 1 already, that you do so immediately. Not that you would not enjoy this book without it, but you want to go on this journey with our reluctant hero Dan for sure. I loved all the characters, and the suspense had me at the edge of my seat, if it weren't for the fact that I needed to work, cook and occasionally sleep I would have read the book in one sitting. I could not wait to find out how it all would end and I eagerly await what will happen from here. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Wow, I absolutely loved this follow-up to Adrift. Equally as exciting and equally as un-put-down-able! The 3rd book in the series is due out Sept 2016. Click, click, click.....

A good follow up, story continues nicely from book one.
Plenty of action, a bit gore, some good people interaction in the story, but Definitely getting incredulously daft towards the end.

SUNDOWN is the second book in at least a trilogy that started with ADRIFT. When I started ADRIFT, there was no clue in the Amazon page or book blurb that it was not a single standalone novel. There were many plot holes in ADRIFT, and it was pretty clear that the end was not the end. I forgot about it and so am late to the party with SUNDOWN (ADRIFT2:SUNDOWN).

The same things that I liked about ADRIFT are also present in SUNDOWN. Great plot, very original and scary take on vampires (STILL not fully explained) and fast-paced, hard-to-put-down prose. Two of the characters from ADRIFT return, one, Herb, the scion of an ancient family tasked with keeping a truce with the vampires and the other, Dan, the unlikely (and presumably only) possessor of the same psychic power as the vampires and thus the only one who can actually fight them face to face.

I am not a great fan of never ending novels, or even trilogies that could have been written and released as one long novel. This seems to be the way that most indie writers are going these days (But not my new fave, Ike Hamill - check him out for great horror) so I can either give up in the indies or get used to it. For now, I'll go along. We have moved from the giant, new cruise ship, the Oceanus, that was destroyed in ADRIFT to central London and the Shard, a (real) high rise for millionaires, where most of the action takes place. We learn a bit more about the vampires (only a bit) and the ancient families that have vowed to protect them and feed them occasionally. This has now failed disastrously in the UK, and the vamps have got their talons and teeth in a giant uproar called a "Rising".

There has to be at least one more (i'm betting more) to finally explain everything and either end humanity or the vamps. I'll spring for the couple of bucks for it because now I'm really curious to get the whole story.

Recommended (but beware that this is part 2 - you have to read ADRIFT first - and there is no guarantee that it will end with the next one).

Part 2 Of A Must Read Trilogy

Anyone who knows me, or reads my reviews, knows I very rarely give a 5 star rating. I've read many great books that I've rated as 4 star, not because they were lacking in any way but personally I choose to save 5 stars for those books, or series, that in my opinion are those rare gems of creativity that take the reader to a whole other level of experience. A level where it's virtually impossible to put the book down, when you do put it down your mind wanders back eager to pick up the tale where you last left off, characters that are created so well they grow into their own unique, vivid reality , and a story line that should be laughable it's so far fetched but instead it not only makes sense, it comes across as both plausible and authentic. This book and the other 2 in this trilogy hit every ideal of a great read. If you like apocalyptic type stories or horror then this is a must read trilogy!

I really liked Adrift #1. Very spooky, with some kick butt vampires. Horror galore! Very suspenseful. Adrift 2: Sundown started slow and I was beginning to get worried that the story would not be as good as #1. But then.....it got better, WAY better! I loved this book! Movie PLEASE! These are some pretty gross vampires. Love the action in this story. This is my 3rd book by K.R. Griffiths. (to include Panic) and I really enjoyed them all. Looking forward to the 2nd book in the Wildfire series (Shock) and maybe even more so for the 3rd Adrift book. But a caution to the author: don't kill the dog!

Non stop, spine tingling action.

I am loving this series. This next instalment is one hell of a rollar coaster ride. From start to finish you are thrown into the chilling action. Book 2 takes off from where book 1 left off and continues to snowball along from one event to the next adding enough new characters to enhance the story. I love the narrative and the evolution of the story plot. It's well thought out and brilliantly executed...heh heh...no pun intended, well maybe just a little intended. For those loving action, horror and suspense, you really should read this series, you won't be disappointed. Congratulations to the author on another wonderful novel. I can't wait to read the next book and see how the story continues to unfold.

Somewhat disappointing sequel

In a reality where vampires are showing Britain that the old legends were far tamer than the horrendous truth of the creatures' nature, the few souls left to try to defeat the ancient enemy are ill prepared for the battle they face. I found myself understanding and liking the canine member of the group far more than its humans who were either greatly exaggerated or ultimately unimportant. Not sure if I will continue to follow the story of the author elects to continue it.

Always dubious of sequels. This, the second instalment of this series had much to live up to after the awesome Adrift 1. It's just as good if not better.
Now it's London's turn to suffer the havoc from the subterranean vampires with action that doesn't let-up. The author has also cleverly managed to introduce a couple of new characters that add more tension and while remaining with the same robust plot. Trust me, you'll keep those pages turning well into the night.

Excellent, exciting, exceptional read!

I bought the first book, expecting it to be about a boat adrift in the sea as a result of some natural disaster. Boy was I surprised! Happy, happy surprise. I wasn't sure what genre I was reading. So exciting. This author has won me over to a genre within horror that I usually avoid. Loved the story loved the characters, loved everything about. This continues on with this second book. Now I can't wait to get the third!

My oh my....

I stayed up all night reading this one. Horror AND an intriguing storyline. I enjoyed the first book, which rolled seamlessly into book 2. I may as well go for the gold and dig into book 3 rrrright now.

The action is picking up!

A fast paced, action packed story.
This is an original twist on the old vampire story and it feels you in and holds you in it's grip until the very last page ... and beyond, to the third book in the trilogy.
Well worth reading!

The story sustains itself nicely in the second part.
The story does not rely on gore as do some stories in this genre.
An entertaining and refreshingly original yarn about vampires.

Dan is a “hermetic”, who can kill a vamp. For most of the book, the sole (and very handy) ability the hermetic has is his invulnerability to the vampires’ mind control tricks. Then he usually just used a cleaver like anyone else would. Dan does evince some abilities later in the book that make him more impressive. That said, there seems to be a big ol’ plot hole here. Sure, Dan can resist the mind control abilities, but he’s killing the vamps in a way that anyone who isn’t mind-controlled could. So why on earth don’t people use long-range weapons that don’t require looking into your killer’s eyes? Frag grenades. Rocket launchers. Dynamite. Assault rifles. Judging by the results of some character actions it would seem that vamps are immune to harm from large numbers of bullets being fired at them, which makes no sense coming from a creature that can be killed with a kitchen cleaver. The vamps are immune to fire, but plenty of attacks don’t rely on fire. Dan should not be the only person who can kill a vamp.

Mildly spoileriffic: at some point napalm is employed. This seems odd for a couple of reasons. One, wouldn’t a missile be easier? It’s hard to believe their first choice would be napalm. Two, you can’t tell me these special wealthy families watching over vampire nests for millennia haven’t made inroads into the government. In which case there should very much be someone there who can push them to use weaponry that will actually work.

I love the fact that vamps can’t even remotely pass as humans. No sparkles here. They’re all about appetite and playing with their food.

Dan’s role in things becomes much more interesting, but I’ll have to leave you to see that for yourself.

I still want to know what happens next, so book three, here I come.

I was so looking forward to this book after reading Adrift and the wait was worth every second. I don't ever want to go out in the dark again, which is difficult as I work nights, and on my family trips to London and traveling on the underground will be done with my heart racing until we get off! Mr. Griffiths has an uncanny ability to capture every second of fear in his writing and make you feel as if you are there. The description of slow scraping of talons on glass still somehow makes my ears hurt.
The first chapter in this book opens at an archaeological dig in Northern Kentucky U.S.A. in 1999 and the discovery of an alien type creature that has been killed by a man. The story then switches to Dan Bellamy and Herb Rennick exactly where we left them in Adrift.
The tides have changed, the rules have been broken and consequences will have to be faced. The vampires, not your run of the mill creatures you may have read about before, are rising from the depth of earth and causing death. They enjoy seeing pain, they like to play with their food and London is a perfect play ground for their entertainment.
I really liked the introduction of Conny who works for the British Transport Police and her dog Remy, a German Shepherd who's speciality is crowd control. They make a dynamic duo in the story.
If you enjoy a rollercoaster read this is a definite must read. It has all the heart stopping moments, you will hold you breath, look over your shoulder and jump at every noise. Already waiting to click on the next episode of this brilliant book.
Congratulations Mr. Griffiths, this is awesome

I'm starting to become a big fan of this guy's books. While I liked the "stuck on a cruise ship with monsters" premise of the first book immensely, I was still entertained in this much wider world of the sequel. Would I have liked it as much if I had not already read the first book and had a connection to Dan, in particular? Not sure. So, if this is your first go-around, maybe read Adrift first to get your bearings. Also, I should add that it's gory. Doesn't bother me. But if you're only interested in psychological horror, maybe skip this one. Lastly, loved the addition of the lady cop with her dog and sick son. Great set of characters to have in an apocalyptic scenario -- creating a dynamic I've not seen before.

Enjoyed the first book not knowing a second was coming. Enjoyed the first, liked this one. The narrative seems to be one long chase scene over the course of one evening, one very long evening. This sequel never really grabbed me. It's bloody and gruesome as it should be dealing with the subject matter, but it is too much. There is just blood on every page. There is always a mess to get through. The poor 'hero' of the story is under used and I suspect he is being saved for more in part 3 which would be fine if this book has been a bit better. A stumble after a strong start.

It is still a great, modern riff on the term 'vampire' and well worth the time. Bring on the third!
