The Art of Deception: A Novella

Rate this book
Mark finally had everything he could dream of – the perfect woman, friends and family who loved him, and a career-changing story at the newspaper about the mayor’s mistress and his seedy backroom deals. Little did Mark know that his big break was about to take a sinister turn when his girlfriend was kidnapped right before his story was to be published. Unbeknownst to Mark, the mayor was a member of a secret society that had been running the city for decades and would stop at no lengths to protect both its members and itself.

In a thrilling world where no one is what they seem, and every character is at the mercy of the all-powerful organization known only as “The Society”, will our hero be able to untangle the web of deception and save the love of his life in time? Through dangerous twists and turns in this new world obsessed with power, wealth, and secrecy, Mark must rely on his friends, and his own sheer determination, to take back the woman he loves from the evil grips of The Society. Part love story, part mystery and part thriller, The Art of Deception will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you begging for the sequel.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. You can view the original review on Genuine Jenn

This is the first published novella by the author and I feel she did a great job with it. I would like to have seen it as a novel instead of a novella as I feel it has a great story line and could have been taken deeper into it. With that being said the characters are all very strong and well developed for a novella. If you love mystery/who dun it type this is a great story. It is a fast paced story with tons of twists and turns that will keep you hooked until the very end. The characters were all intertwined together having you wonder who knows who and who will be next on the list for the Society.

I give this novella a 4 out of 5 stars and I look forward to reading more work from this author.

"The Art of Deception" has all the elements it needs to be a great read but ultimately ends up falling well short.
It's as if the author did a rough draft for a novel, put it to one side, and came back later to flesh it out a bit.
What we get is the skeleton to hang the book on but the meat is almost entirely missing.
Some of the time it reads as if each paragraph should have a bullet point before it.
The plot - crooked politician, shady secret society, ambitious young reporter - is not novel but, given the proper treatment, could have made for a much better book.

Mark’s life spirals out of control when he discovers some dark secrets of a reputed mayor. He feels this story will make his career as a journalist. But his girlfriend is abducted and Mark is left in jeopardy. The Mayor belongs to a secret society which springs into action right after they become aware of Mark’s unpublished article. Then the horrors unfold.
This novella will keep you on the edge. It is very realistic and it’s much more than an average thriller. It doesn’t merely entertain the reader—it absolutely shocks the reader. I was very engrossed in the story and while I read it, nothing else seemed to distract me. There is everything that you find in a thriller—nail biting suspense and action-packed episodes. But there are some elements of romance and emotions that make the story even better. I was kind of disappointed when I reached the last chapter. I thought something is lacking but then I noticed there’s an epilogue and it totally changed my point of view. The story is as promising as it looks when you read the first few pages. I really liked the author’s style of narration and she brings to life some very intriguing characters. This is certainly the best thriller I read this month and I’m going to recommend this to every thriller and suspense fanatic. But hey, even if you aren’t a big fan of thrillers, I’m sure you are going to like this book. Five starts and nothing less for this!

The Art of Deception is certainly a thriller! The story grabbed me in the first couple of pages and was hard to put down. It is a novella so it could easily be read in one sitting. Also, it stays right to the story, since it is less than 100 pages. I too think it could be novel with more development. It is a good back story. Good vs evil in a modern day setting. I will let you read it for yourself to see who wins.(I received a free copy in exchange for a review)
