It was so funny that he'd come to New Orleans thinking that he could get back at her. Now he only wanted to get her back.

The perfect gentleman return in this sexy second chance romance and what a twisty ride it was! With the third installment of this thrilling series, more mysteries are being unveiled but with every question we get an answer to, it only forms countless more.
She brought out the caveman in him. He wanted to mark her, to let everyone else know this one woman is his.

This was an interesting change of pace for me. I envisioned Dax totally different from the previous book. While we don't know much about him, we do know that he's still hung up on the only woman that he's ever loved. It's been years since they spoke and there's enough betrayal and hurt brewing between them to guarantee no second chances, but sometimes fate has other plans.

Dax Spencer may be a too sexy for his own good Naval officer, but he's always known what he wanted; the tough as nails NCIS agent Holland Kirk. Their lives are interwoven together with mutual friends, but Holland always keeps Dax at arm's length. She's always envisioned herself with someone less...intense, someone that will allow her to be as driven in her career as she is. And she knows that if she gives in to Dax, his job as a Naval officer will not let her do that...no matter how much he tempts her. But it's not long before the chemistry between them burns too hot to deny, and Dax is nothing if not determined to win her heart.

Unfortunately their short lived affair ends in heartbreak when Holland betrays him and in a drunken bender, Dax married her best friend only to later divorce. It's been years since they spoke, but with new evidence that has now come to light about his father's death, Dax is determined to solve the mystery once and for all. And the one person that holds the answers he needs is the one woman that completely annihilated him when he gave her everything.

The story is told in two parts; past and present, and I really enjoyed that the authors split it that way as opposed to doing it with flashbacks. It truly allows the reader to get immersed in the budding romance between Dax and Holland. The first half is a bit slow building and at times almost teeth-rottingly sweet (at least for my particular tastes). Dax may come off as a playboy in the previous books, but he's definitely not one. I was very curious how he would redeem himself with the whole marriage to the best friend thing, and I'm happy to say he did that flawlessly.

The second half is a bit more angsty with the added element of second-chance romance at play, which I happen to love!
You're the woman for me. I've never forgotten you, not once since the moment we met.

There's a lot that happens in Big Easy Temptation, but even with the continuous story arc, the authors do a great job in allowing this to also be enjoyed as a standalone. Though I highly recommend reading in order to truly appreciate the complexity of the mystery surrounding everything.

I loved Holland and I really loved Dax. There was some odd phrases that I found myself rolling my eyes at, like "...she would welcome him as he planted his seed", but altogether I highly enjoyed this book. I found this to be slower paced than the predecessors, but I was still heavily involved in the story. The first half took me a bit to get through but luckily it really picked up in the second half.
He unwound her polite facade, obliterated her protective walls, an reduced her to a trembling bundle of need.

I also seriously loved getting those glimpse of Mad. Every time I finish a book in this series I keep hoping that his death is a conspiracy and he's really alive hiding somewhere. It just hurts my heart to think that he's really gone because you know I love me my irreverent manwhores.

All in all this was another fantastic installment in a great series. With Jordan and Gus's book next, I can't wait to see how the rest of the mystery unfolds.

If you like a second chance romance with a dash of mystery and suspense, a dirty talking hero that only has eyes for one woman, and a heroine that's as tough as she is smart, then you've found your next read.
I want to kiss and lick and taste every inch of you, Holland. Do you know how long I've waited to be here? Years. Fuck, sweetheart, even before I met you, I dreamed about you. I've always known you're the one woman who could make me feel, make me want forever."

Big Easy Temptation
is the third in The Perfect Gentlemen series, and it seems I’m a little more invested with each book! Shayla Black and Lexi Blake have created an addictive and intense series, and I just loved this installment! This is very much a second chance romance, one of my favorite kinds. The first half takes up back to the past where Dax and Holland fall hopelessly for each other. Their love is not the kind a person finds twice. Holland is the one for Dax, has been since the day he set eyes on her, and she feels the same for him, but things go horribly wrong, when a bigger conspiracy comes into play.

Now, present day, there’s so much hurt from betrayal is between Holland and Dax. The passage of three years hasn’t dulled the intensity of their feelings, even if hurt and anger is primarily between them when they meet up again. They’re thrown together again when Dax returns to reopen his father’s suicide scandal with new evidence.

This series opened with the murder of one of the “Perfect Gentlemen”, Mad Crawford, in the first book and the conspiracy behind his death and how it’s connected to Zack, the current President, and one of the “Gentlemen”, is a continuing story arc throughout the series with each book taking us a little further into the mystery. But at the center of each book is a romance for one of the “Perfect Gentlemen” and this installment was Dax’s turn to find his way back to his one and only true love. Boy, Dax really screwed up three years ago! That’s not to say that I couldn’t understand how he did what he did, but some first class groveling was in order! I was hurt and pissed for Holland’s sake even though she had a hand in how thing played out, but she sacrificed everything for Dax! No worries because when we return to the present things are almost immediately cleared up and Dax realized what he did and how he felt was a major F-up on his part! Now Dax is determined to win Holland back and never let her go again.

I’m not into super angsty romances, but this didn’t go over the top for me. Yes, my heart hurt for both of them, but this just made me yearn for them to work out even more! I loved the intensity of their emotions and passion for each other! Their intimate time together was desperate and so very HOT!

The danger from their investigation puts them Holland and Dax in harm’s way and so there is much more going on than just the romance. They have the back up of the Gentlemen, and I was thrilled to see Connor and Lara again, along with crazy-conspiracy-theory-Freddy, as well. The mystery behind Dax’s father’s suicide is cleared up by the end, but the continuing mystery is still unfolding.

The end reunites all the “Gentlement” and I wanted to smack Zack for what he’s doing to “protect” Liz! I can’t wait for Augustine, “Gus” to find out and kick him where it counts! But I think I’ll have to wait for Zack and Liz’s story because I think Roman and Augustine are up next. I can’t wait!

Naval officer Dax Spencer is still reeling from his recent discovery related to his father’s death, calling into question everything that was assumed about it being a supposed suicide and the reasons behind it. Now he’s headed back to New Orleans, the center of the original investigation and to NCIS Agent Holland Kirk who led it, betrayed him and broke his heart.

I liked how the story was structured, beginning with Dax and Holland’s first meetings, their reunion years later when she helped him reopen his father’s investigation and the reason for their permanent separation. Their backstory is extremely important to the present day events and it was well crafted. I got the depth of their feelings for each other and why her betrayal cut so deep. I also gained understanding about his short-lived Las Vegas marriage and all that it implied. Dax’s return to New Orleans marked the first time he’s seen Holland since their breakup and he stirred the proverbial hornets nest with others involved in the first investigation.

I enjoyed everything about this story, including the romance. Dax is so likable, as is Holland, and they both have strong personalities, fully committed to their careers. But it’s still the continuing mystery arc that’s enthralled me with the series and this story. Things get really dicey as Dax and Holland get closer to the truth regarding Admiral Spencer’s supposed suicide and more. It’s exciting and Kaleo Griffith delivered a great performance in his narration, handling a host of characters and fine storytelling. I’m now anxious to move on to the next book.

4 Mr. Officer Dax Stars

Big Easy Temptation is a standalone and is part of The Perfect Gentlemen series. I’ve been reading this series from the beginning, each book builds upon each other, so if you haven’t started this series I would suggest you start with the first one, but you do not have to read the prior books.

This is Dax and Holland’s story.

Out of all the books in the series, Big Easy Temptation was written a little different. The book is structured in two parts and the first half of the book we get a glimpse of how Holland and Dax meet, we also get a glimpse of the gang, prior to Mad’s death. I have always been interested in Mad’s character (and I secretly want a book on him) so this was an interesting treat.

Also this book is a bit more mysterious and reads more crime thriller (in my opinion).

Dax and Holland have this unstoppable attraction for each other but the timing has never been right. Dax wants to be with Holland and has told her several times how much he wants it. Dax and Holland shared a kiss and that was it, but it was enough to leave an impression.

Now, Holland is working on her career and Dax needs a favor. Holland is strong, smart and loyal. Her career is her number one priority and as much as she wants to be with Dax, she doesn’t want to be a doormat wife. I understood her needs, but I wanted her to just give it all up and be with Dax.

Dax’s father commits suicide and Dax is determined to prove everyone wrong, no matter the cost. This is the focal point of the book and the mysterious aspect of it. Holland is assigned the case and Dax works with Holland to pursue the truth. He also pursues Holland at the same time.

I liked the mysterious element of the book and there’s a slight angst and tension between Holland and Dax, since we know something happens (it’s implied and foreshadowed in the book).

The second part of the book shifts and I really like this part. I really enjoyed reading Dax and I loved his determination for the truth and working out his issues towards Holland. The book has a lot of elements going on and you get the gang sprinkled throughout the read. Overall, a thrilling and mysterious read that keeps you on your toes.

What I liked: The Plot!!!
What I didn't like: The extreme feelings!
What I liked: The conspiracy.
What I didn't like: The "romance"
What I liked: The characters.
What I didn't like: All the mushiness.

The plot is awesome and this series hooked me because of it although I wish they'd tone down the love story. I admit, I am not a typical romance reader. I want a good love story, but don't need so much "romance" all the time. The whole "no one else can ever make me feel this" and "I have never felt this way with anyone else and never will" is a bit over the top in my opinion. Add to that the repetitiveness of continually telling the reader about their "intense connection" throughout the whole book and it's just too much. I just don't care for authors going over the top with so many feelings and emotions.

I feel like a good author shouldn't have to write about the electricity between them so often. I prefer when its understood and felt through their bond without having to be mentioned. But, that's just me and as I mentioned, I am not the typical female reader. This being said, I really did like the story, a lot actually! I am totally loving the plot and how the story as a whole has been developing from book 1. I am really looking forward to the rest of the books in this series. I just hope the authors tone down the "romance" factor just a bit.

My friend Jenny Jo told me to read this series because she knew I would like it. Action and sexiness all in one ….hell YES, sign me up. I do tend to like the sappy love stuff providing there is enough other going on to support it BUT I think this might even be a little too sappy for me. I KNOW……shocking for anyone that knows me at all. She is right when she says the plot is good and trying to figure out who is behind the whole conspiracy thing is really interesting and the characters are great. The problem is every feeling they have is over the top, like “No one has ever made me feel this way before”. And maybe if it was just once or so during the book it would be okay but it is many times. Jenny said it is better when as a reader you FEEL the connection not constantly reading that you should be feeling the connection.

I am enjoying all the action & mystery so on to the next book!!!

DNF @ 35%

I wanted to like this one so bad. Unfortunately, it was too slow for my liking. Add to it the lack of chemistry between Dax and Holland made the decision to DNF this an easier one.

Reviewed for herding cats & burning soup.

Aaaaaaaaahhhh Dax! Gimme gimme! Big Easy Temptation... one hella sexy and intense read. Steamy and suspenseful. Plus a second chance romance? Gah! Yes, please! Blake and Black know how to write one seriously pulse pounding, can't-put-it-down romance. Loved it!

So the gist of it is that Dax and his friends have found themselves smack in the middle of a conspiracy and new info has him questioning an old family scandal that led to his father's suicide years earlier. Something just doesn't add up and needing help he lands on the door step of a woman he loved years earlier and who betrayed him and his family in the worst way while they were dealing with their family tragedy.

So the set up for this one is done in two sections.
1] Three years ago as Dax and Holland were falling in love (gah it's good!) and then things going all to hell
2] and then Present Day as he's shown up back in her life and they're dealing with seeing each other again, mending fences and trying to solve his father's case.

It's full of yummy sexy romantic goodness, heartbreak, thrilling suspense. All those fabulous things I look for in a romantic escape. So these two. Dax is a Naval officer and Holland an NCIS agent so that was pretty neat seeing them in such fields. I liked both of them as well. Holland is pretty badass and fierce (though I did hate her for just a little while over some things but we got past it lol) and Dax is just sexy and heartwrenching. Man I felt for him as he faced his family's darkest secrets. The man has determination and honor and is just a great guy (he can throw a mean barb though, whew!). I loved them together and ached for them when they were apart.

The suspense in this series is excellent. I wouldn't call it romantic suspense really but the mystery/conspiracy is exciting and keeps you guessing as this group of friends tries to figure out a danger threatening the President (one of the grop members). Mobs, murders, cover ups. It's fascinating and horrible. Each book is a full HEA but the conspiracy itself unravels a bit at a time with each book so best to read these in order for best experience I think.

The one issue I had is something I've mentioned before that bothers me. The hero said something assy which thoroughly pissed off the heroine and...she struck him. Followed by him thinking how he'd deserved it and then another woman saying "she should have punched you. Maybe she could have broken your jaw. An open handed slap reminds me of all those bitchy housewives on TV and that handprint shows. Real women punch. Or kick. You deserve a good kick in the gnads." Really? Meh. I hate seeing that in romance. That took half a star off this one.

All in all, though, other than that one quibble Big Easy Temptation hit all my good spots and left me eager for more from this group of friends. Addictive and simply captivating. Black & Blake are a smashing team and deliver time and time again.

If you haven't read this book yet, run to the nearest retailer and grab yourself a copy because this book is brimming with explosive passion, destructive secrets and gut-twisting emotions, and will take you on the ride of your life! As the story unfolds, you can see the wave of pain and heartbreak coming, but you know you'll have no choice but to ride it to get to the beauty on the other side!

Dax Spencer thought his father's alleged suicide and the scandal preceding it were the lowest points of his life, until the woman he loved betrayed him and left him, but he got his payback in the cruelest way possible and put her behind him. Or tried to. Now, new information has surfaced that supports his belief that his father was framed and killed as part of a conspiracy bigger than they ever imagined, one that has already taken the lives of their loved ones and has the potential to do great damage to lives and legacies. Dax is determined to clear his father's name and then get to the bottom of this plot, but first he must face to woman who broke his heart years ago.

Caught in a sticky web, Holland Kirk gave up her chance for happiness with Dax to protect him and for that, he paid her back by breaking her trust in the worst way. Now he's back to re-open the investigation into his father's death and she has no choice but to work with him again.

I love Dax and Holland so much. Holland is confident and tough, except when it comes to Dax. Dax is alpha to the core, protective about his loved ones and really sweet, but I especially love that he didn't play games with his feelings for Holland and put himself out there, even after he hurt her so badly. They bring out the worst and best in each other and their tumultuous relationship was heartbreaking, especially because of the manipulation of external forces that led to stupid decisions that cost them their happiness.

I love everything about this book: the characters, the dialogue, the emotions, the bonds among them and the unending mystery. Just when you think that the authors have given you the best they have to offer, they top it with this. There are more questions than answers at the moment and I can't wait for the next book to see how Gus wreaks havoc on the emotions of an unprepared Perfect Gentleman!

And now, it’s Dax’s turn. If I wasn’t already in love with him—one, because of his name and two, because he is a Perfect Gentleman—I would be after about five percent of this book! Holy smokes!! He could charm me right out of my panties.

Accent—check.
Dropdead good looks—check.
A bit mysterious—check.
Powerful—check.
The WHOLE package—check, check!

I don’t think there is anything else I would want in a man. The chemistry between Holland Kirk and Dax Spencer is off the charts and burns white hot. From the streets of NOLA to the history of the two, and all the twists and turns that occurred in their relationship, we are headed full steam ahead towards disaster… or are we?

This winding road, which brings us one step closer to solving the puzzle of a much larger conspiracy involving all the men—Zach, Gabe, Connor and Dax—kept me turning pages at an insanely rapid rate. I was on a quest to figure out the whodunnit’s and the why’s of the mystery, but the extreme, integral relationships of all the characters kept me on my toes.

I’m so in love with the characters, the plot, the ever-evolving story line, I sit on the precipice of a cliff, constantly waiting for what happens next. As the words flow effortlessly, I’m able to visualize the scenes on a movie real in my brain. So, who will be your Dax? ~ Heather, 5 Page-Turning stars

~~~
Three years ago, in the wake of his father’s scandalous affair and subsequent death, Dax Spencer found comfort in the arms of Holland Kirk. Holland and Dax had a quick, steamy affair that ended when Holland’s betrayal came to light. After cutting all ties, Dax is thrust back into Holland's life when more details of the conspiracy surrounding the deaths of some of the Perfect Gentlemen’s loved ones come to light.
Holland is an NCIS agent stationed in New Orleans, and all current clues point Dax in that direction. Dax doesn't realize Holland's been keeping a secret from him for all this time—one that could prove deadly. As Dax and Holland get reacquainted, they can't deny their feelings, but as more details of the conspiracy are revealed, will Dax and Holland survive long enough to truly reunite?
Man, oh man, I love this series. I cannot get enough to of Dax, Zack, Connor, Roman and Gabe! And I adore strong-minded, determined female leads—Holland is amazing, and so is Dax. I love the two of them together and was heartbroken when circumstances split them apart. I found myself silently cheering for them to work it all out—I had to keep turning the pages to find out where things between them ended up, because it could have gone either way. Now I'm dying to read Roman and Gus’ story! ~ Missy, 4.5 stars
*This review will contain spoilers for prior books in the series so read at your own risk!*
The Perfect Gentlemen have turned me into a heroine hater. With each successive book, I think I have found my favorite member of the group... but that's a lie. I want them all. I'm being a selfish catty bitchface because no female heroine is going to be good enough for one of these men... unless she is me, of course. First we had Gabriel Bond, the corporate mogul. Then came Conner Sparks, secret agggeent man. Now we get the story of Dax Spencer, the handsome Naval Captain. Up next is Roman Calder, protector of POTUS. And then, we certainly can't forget Zach Hayes, leader of the free world! But there is one Perfect Gentlemen missing - Maddox. Mad cannot be dead! I mean, come on, his penis has its own Twitter account! There is just too much awesomeness and hilarity for him to be gone. I don't think Lexi and Shayla are cruel enough for him to really be dead, but they are being very close-mouthed about it. What say you? Do you think he's at work behind the scenes? Is he Deep Throat? Much like Freddy, I have my own theories!
So I am actually enjoying the suspense/mystery/conspiracy of this series as much as (maybe even a little more) than the romance. Gasp! I can't believe I said that... but it's because I've been a heroine hater from the beginning, so I'm just inserting myself into the role and the heroines can go play somewhere else. In the last book, we uncovered much more about the conspiracy against Zach by the Russian Bratva. We found (and lost) Natalia Kulikov. And now we have this key piece of evidence - a deadpool. A hit list so to speak that has some very important names on it... namely, Constance Hayes, Joy Hayes and Admiral Spencer (Dax's father).
Dax never believed his father committed suicide, so he is taking off to New Orleans (my city- yay!) with this new information to confront the woman who broke his heart, and briefly looked into his Dad's death. Dax was another yummy hero, worthy of the Perfect Gentlemen. Handsome and brawny, he fills out his Naval officer uniform quite nicely. While he was portrayed as a manwhore in Seduction in Session, he did not come across that way in this book. He came off a little more tragic, dealing with the death of his dad, a huge scandal, and then a horrible betrayal by the woman he loved. He's one of those heroes that you want to get your hands on and fix... and fill up that hole in his heart.
Holland Kirk is a special agent with Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) in New Orleans. She was also friends with Joy Hayes, Zach's deceased wife, which is how she met Dax and the rest of the Perfect Gentlemen. While Holland has always had an attraction to Dax, she is wary of the reputation of the PGs. But not only that, she doesn't want to end up like her mother, who was a military wife always pining away for her husband. I kept looking for a reason not to like Holland because well, we already talked about me being a heroine hater. In all honesty, she was not an annoying heroine. She was fairly kickass in her role as NCIS agent and, when she wasn't betraying Dax, she was pretty even-keeled. Of course I hated her betrayal and the things she says to Dax... but I could not totally hate her even when that was happening.
I am usually not a big fan of the second chance romance because, well, the DRAMA. But Shayla and Lexi did it right in this story... they split into two parts - past and present. So we actually get the buildup of the first relationship when Dax and Bambi Holland fell in love. This always helps me get invested in the story and relationship because I like to start at the beginning. That way, when the couple does reconnect, I can deal better with the drama. That being said, Shayla and Lexi did not drag out the drama here, which made me very happy. So I enjoyed the relationship ups and downs, even knowing that I would be a much better match for Dax than Holland. I may even let her have him as long as I can keep Conner.
Because half of the story takes place in the past, we also get to see a little more of Maddox Crawford, playboy extraordinaire. Man, I love Mad. I really hope he isn't dead.
Sexy...Addictive...Explosive...SENSATIONAL! This writing duo can DO NO WRONG! Shayla Black and Lexi Blake are two bright stars in my literary world! I count on them to build me up and to make my day brighter with their wonderful romance, suspense, and undeniable intrigue. They have never steered me wrong and I'm guaranteed a wonderful escape from reality when it comes to their work, separately and as co-writers. BIG EASY TEMPTATION has to be my FAVORITE of The Perfect Gentlemen series! From the beginning, I had a huge crush on Dax Spencer and I was thrilled to start his happily ever after. The woman these ladies picked for this gorgeous perfect gentlemen, is Holland Kirk. She is no weeping willow. She is strong, independent, and tells it like it is. The chemistry that they shared was intense and beautiful. Even years apart, couldn't extinguish the passion they have when they are together. These two strong-willed individuals clash and come together over and over and it just makes the flame burn brighter.
Betrayal, death, and tragedy will not keep these two away from each other . But an enemy threatens to tear apart everything they worked so hard to accomplish. There is no skimping on the sex, thrills, and suspense in book #3 of Black and Blake's stunning Perfect Gentlemen series. Whether it is the blush on my cheeks from the dirty talk, or the pit in my stomach from the heartbreak, the journey of Dax and Holland is not an easy one, but it's one that will captivate and amaze you. You will NOT be able to put this down once you start. There is adventure, passion, and angst around every corner! These incredibly talented ladies gives us an AWESOME romance with tons of heart and tons of passion. There is even a nice little surprise at that end that made me smile! Do yourself a favor and immerse yourself into the world of The Perfect Gentlemen. You will be so glad you did!
4 "Betrayal or Salvation" Stars for the story and narration!
If you're looking for romantic suspense with a good dose of spice, then The Perfect Gentleman Series may just be exactly what you're looking for. Though this was my first experience with this series, I had no trouble following the underlying suspense arc which does unfold over multiple books due to the attention with which Shayla Black and Lexi Ryan take to explain what had previously occurred; and the romance is fully contained in this book.
Kaleo Griffith does his usual great job with delivering the perfect pacing for a romantic suspense title. Moreover his voice is perfectly suited to playing the various "perfect gentlemen" who feature in this series. My only issue is that several of them sounded somewhat similar making it difficult to tell them apart without listening for dialogue tags--but as these dialogue scenes are not that frequent this was only a minor detractor. The two main characters, in turn, were easily distinguishable as he uses a slightly higher pitch for his females which made listening to the two main characters' dialogues seamless.
All in all, I enjoyed Big Easy Temptation, and I now look forward to starting with book one to delve deeper into the suspense arc and to enjoy more of the romantic escapades of these alpha, political and sexy "perfect gentlemen" heroes.
Big Easy Temptation by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake
Perfect Gentlemen, #3
Release Date: May 3, 2016
Rate: 5 Stars
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of Big Easy Temptation in advance for an honest review.
I have loved this series so much but let me say that Big Easy Temptation is my favorite in the series so far! I thought that I was torn between Connor and Dax but not after reading this book. This couple by far has had the best chemistry and story-line for me. They managed to spread it out over 10 years, and give such an amazing build to what happened in their relationship to lead them to where they are at now. The suspense and the thread of the mystery from the first book, intensifies in this book. I love the whole addition of the conspiracy theories.
“He knew what he wanted and it wasn’t some sweet thing who would look at him like he was the king of the world because every now and then he remembered to bring her flowers or help with the dishes. No, he wanted a woman who would chew his ass out when he forgot. He wanted a woman who demanded respect, who earned it with her smarts and quick wit and passion.
He wanted Holland.”
<><> Some Backstory <><>
^^ ~ Twenty two years ago, six guys went to Creighton Academy and became known as “The Perfect Gentlemen” (don’t let the name fool you). They were the closest of friends while at the academy and twenty years later they are all very rich, powerful and still remain extremely loyal to each other.
In the previous books, one of the six (Maddox) dies in a plane crash. Gabe, Connor, Dax, Roman and Zack all question the circumstances. Things just aren’t adding up and it appears there may be a lot more to the story than anyone suspects, including ties to the Russian mob and a plot involving the President (who is one of the Perfect Gentlemen).
<><> Book Three Story Overview <><>
At the end of book two, a list was found with names and dollar amounts - a kill list. Not only was Dax’s father’s name on the list, but the Presidents’s wife and mother. Zack has requested Dax’s help.
~~ Zack: “Dax, if we can find out why they killed your father, maybe we can figure out who killed my mother and Joy. And what their master plan might be.”
With a clear mission from the President, Dax heads to New Orleans to talk to the NCIS agent who had investigated his father’s death - his former lover, Holland Kirk.
Things between Holland and Dax came to a screeching halt when Dax accused Holland of betraying him…
~~ “She’d betrayed him in the cruelest fashion possible by closing her investigation after giving it as much thought as someone opening an umbrella on a rainy day. In the blink of an eye, she’d made a judgment call that gave the press free license to vilify his father. Hell, she’d even had him believing his father was guilty at one point. She’d torn down his family to further her career. Oh, he’d paid her back. Now nothing lay between them but anger and regret.”
Of course Holland had her reasons for closing the case but she didn’t share them with Dax.
This time, DAX is determined to get a proper investigation.
~~ “Armed with new evidence, Dax intended to personally make sure Holland opened the investigation again—and gave the facts the due process they deserved.”
The history between these two goes back years.
Dax has been in love with Holland for a long time and not a day goes by where he doesn’t think of her and regret what happened between them.
Holland is extremely attracted to Dax, but fears a life with him would end up the same as her parents - where she follows her Navy husband around and always waits for him to come home. That’s not the life she wants.
When their brief relationship ended three years ago, it nearly broke both of them. They love each other, but their actions hurt both of them.
With a mystery to solve and some strong feelings to deal with, this partnership definitely has a bumpy ride to their HEA.
~~ “You were my dream girl back then. When I thought you betrayed me, you became my nightmare. But I was focused on you. Loving you, hating you, it didn’t change the fact that you were and always will be everything to me.”
<><> Characters <><>
Hero: Daxton Spencer
~ Age: late 30’s or 40
~ Occupation: Naval Captain
~ It’s a given - Spencer sons join the Navy. There has been a Spencer in every war fought since the Revolution, so it was a no brainer Dax would follow that path.
Dax’s father was an Admiral in the navy and his mother was a New Orleans socialite. Three years ago his father was “caught” in a compromising position that ruined his father’s reputation and Admiral Spencer committed suicide. Dax has struggled with the reality of the events surrounding his father’s death.
Dax has made a name for himself in the Navy (aka Captain Awesome).
* The following words/phrases were used to describe Dax: good judge of character, good at avoiding detection, restless, bitter, hard worker, honest, loyal, a good man, makes family a priority, likes to bend the rules, smart, a good leader, war hero, considered one of the Navy’s finest
~ “Do you know what I like about the Navy? I’m not royalty there. No one gives a crap that my family has money. No one cares what my last name is. I work hard and I’ll continue to do so.”
Heroine: Holland Kirk
~ Age: probably mid 30’s
~ Occupation: NCIS agent in New Orleans
~ Holland’s father was a Naval officer stationed in San Diego under Dax’s own dad. She had first hand knowledge of the military life and she knew it wasn’t what she wanted.
When Holland’s mother died, she went to live with her aunt and uncle. She’d only seen her dad when he came home on leave, so her aunt and uncle had a strong influence on her life. Her uncle was a cop, so Holland followed her uncle’s path, which was law enforcement.
* The following words/phrases were used to describe Holland: likes the mental challenge of solving a crime, competent, not a leap first kind of girls, likes to mull things over and think through all possibilities, intriguing, a rule enforcer, good investigator, smart, seeks justice, elusive, empty, tired, vibrant, strong, stubborn, good under fire
~ “My grandmother left me her apartment. I couldn’t possibly sell it. Who doesn’t want to live over a real New Orleans voodoo store?”
<><> A Few Thoughts <><>
^^ ~ I felt bad for Holland knowing she had to give up someone she truly loved. I could feel her heartbreak.
^^ ~ This is split into two parts. The first part happens three years ago and establishes the relationship between Holland and Dax. Part two starts around 50% and is current.
I’m glad it was done this way because it gave me the chance to get to know Holland and Dax together and what they meant to each other. As I moved into Part two, I was completely invested in their HEA.
^^ ~ Holland’s a rule enforcer. Dax likes to bend the rules. They come from opposite ends of the spectrum which created a good dynamic
^^ ~ When it came to crunch time, Connor actually wanted Holland to have his back rather than Dax. I love that he didn’t care about gender - just who was more skilled.
^^ ~ like the other books, a person in the inner circle proves to be involved with the bad guys. It was obvious to me from the start.
^^ ~ Deep Throat wasn’t around in this book. I missed him. I was really hoping he would turn out to be a certain someone - but maybe not
^^ ~ I enjoy the way the supporting characters continue to be an integral part of the current story. Lara’s reaction to meeting Holland :)
~ “Holland!” Petite Lara came at her with a smile and pulled Holland into an embrace, her head resting on Holland’s shoulder. “It’s so good to meet you. You’re like the missing piece of the family.”
<><> Quotes <><>
“I called him a lowlife cocksucker who deserved to have his entrails eaten by a gator. I might have been in a bad mood at the time.”
Dax: “I don’t want to just get married. I want to be in love. Everyone looks at marriage like it’s the prize to be had. It should be the inevitable outcome of the real prize.”
Holland: “Being in love?”
Dax: “Loving a woman so much that I know I won’t ever want another one the way I want her. Knowing she completes me in some inexplicable way and I do the same for her. Marriage, children, the house in the suburbs, they don’t mean a damn thing without that foundation.”
“I don’t see the connection.”
“That’s the funny thing about connections, isn’t it? You don’t always see them at first.”
Maddox: “My dick is like the Energizer Bunny. Except more manly. And bigger. And without ears. The point is, I got stamina. And technique.”
“My aunt always told me the swamp was for gators, tourists who wanted to get eaten by gators, and criminals who knew no one wanted to hang out with gators.”
“I’ll love you as long as this soul exists.”
UPDATED with additional read dates.
Still one of the best series I’ve ever read. I'll never get tired of listening to this series.
“I don’t want to just get married. I want to be in love…. Loving a woman so much that I know I won’t ever want another one the way I want her..... Marriage, children, the house in the suburbs, they don’t mean a damn thing without that foundation.”
Daxton Spencer (38-ish, Naval captain, big bro to Gus, jackass) knew that Holland Kirk (37-ish, NCIS) was the only woman for him the first time he kissed her, at Zack and Joy’s wedding. Holland had no interest in seeking a relationship with him at the time, so they parted ways… Fast forward several years later….
Part 1 - THEN: Dax is in New Orleans, and he wants Holland's help to prove his dad was innocent of the crimes he was accused of, and that he didn’t commit suicide. While they investigate, they fall madly in love. Things are going good until Holland is forced to make a tough choice… to save Dax’s life, she has to break his heart.
“I wanted to be your husband…. I wanted to have children with you, to raise a family and have a life with you. What a fucking fool I was…. And you know what? I won’t ever forgive you. Not for a second.”
Dax is so hurt by her “betrayal” that he flies to Vegas and does something SERIOUSLY stupid (I wanted to strangle him and I don’t think I could forgive him. I put it in spoilers).
Part 2 – PRESENT DAY: Dax and the Perfect Gentlemen have just learned that Dax’s dad was on the Russian hit list. Now they’re sending him back to New Orleans to find out what really happened to his dad. It’s been three years since he last saw Holland, but now he needs her help once again…. And when he learns the truth about Holland’s betrayal…
I took something from us that should have been sacred and tossed it in the trash…… You were faithful in a way I wasn’t, and all I can do is beg your forgiveness and promise that our marriage will be forever.”
Holland has no interest in getting tangled up with Dax again, so being the strong woman she is, she tells him to fuck off. Of course he doesn’t do that. It takes some seriously manipulation on Dax’s part to get Holland to agree to help him out, once again. That’s when they start to figure out some truths, unravel some mysteries, and create new questions. It's so much fun!!
"What happened is in the past. It doesn’t define us. I only know how damn much I need you now. I can’t breathe I want you so much…..I need you, Holland. My life has been a wreck without you in it."
SEX: Dear God!!! Their first time at 31% was so fucking hot. Thank goodness for it because we don’t get any more until the 78% mark, and yes, that time is hot as fuck also. He gives good oral in both instances. I will say, the time between their first time and the next time is barely noticeable because there’s so much action happening. FYI, they use condoms up until the end. Blah.
COMMUNICATION: I hate the “leaving to save your life” trope, but honestly, I love this story and these characters so IDGAF in this situation.
DAX: That stupid fucker. He says and does some stupid fucking shit and it’s AWFUL. I honestly don’t know if I could have forgiven him, even if he was my soul mate. This is a SPOILER so make sure you really want to know. . When Dax shows back up in her life, he says some seriously MEAN shit to Holland. Like WTF dude. I wanted to cut his dick off, I was so mad at him!!!! Just be ready. Dax is the one you’ll find it hard to love. Plus, I don’t think Holland makes him grovel nearly enough. Bastard should have willingly set himself on fire to prove he was sorry. At least in my opinion. Anyway – he gives a good reason for why he did certain things, but still…..
AUDIO: This one is narrated by Kaleo Griffith and his voice alone makes me have a mini “O”. I wish his female voice was better, but it’s worth suffering through. I’ve also read the book and it just doesn’t have the same impact.
BOOK ORDER: It was confusing during the audio, so I wanted to help you out. Things jump in the following order: Prologue - Everyone is at Zack and Joy’s wedding. At this point, Dax and Holland have met and this is when he first makes a move on her and she eventually rejects him. Present - This takes place at the very end of Connor’s book when they discover that Joy was assassinated and find the “kill list”. Dax says he has to go back to New Orleans to find out what really happened to his dad. Then his mind flashes back to when he and Holland first kissed. Past again - When Holland and Dax fell in love, when investigating his dad’s death the first time around. This is the first 50% of the book. Present Day again - Picks up back at the end of Book 2 with Dax leaving DC (3 years after Dax and Holland broke up) and heading back New Orleans again. This is the last 50% of the book.
While I usually hate flashbacks and second chance romances, it was needed in this case.
PGs: Connor and Lara are here, plus a guest appearance by Gus, Roman, Maddox, and Freddy!! Yay!!! Tin foil and booby traps! You also get to know more about Dax's family. His mother is really funny and his sister, Augustine aka Gus, is a damn shark and I absolutely love her.
As I've said before, I really love this series and every single character.
“Women like Holland don’t change, not for money or sex or fame. So you need to get on your knees and beg like a good man should.”
“Do you think I wouldn’t try that? She won’t listen to a word I say whether I’m on my knees or not.”
His sister scoffed and he could practically see her rolling her eyes. “I wasn’t talking about words, silly. I was talking about oral sex. You need to get down there and not let up until she’s had so many orgasms she’s too exhausted to fight you anymore. Trust me. This is a tried-and-true technique.”
I have to admit that I am deeply invested in these Prefect Gentlemen characters and I care deeply what happens to Dax and Holland. I don't normally get this deeply involved with characters, but I am with these two. For the first half of the book, Then, my heart was breaking for Dax knowing what is going to happen. For the second half . . . I wish it was as good as the first half. The interactions between Dax and Holland in the Now half, how they got together and resolved their differences, just didn't grab me. The action climax was good, but I just wanted more. I guess that is to be expected when the focus of the book is on the romance and not on the suspense. I was looking for . . . more.
3.5 STARS!
So, what happened?
The book was good, in a slowly kind of way, because it was not until the last 50% that it really picked up for me, so I got a little bored, and it frustrated the hell out of me because I LOVE these men, and I really was expecting more from Dax :(.
I missed the witty banter the authors have got me used to between the main characters, also, the lack of mystery and conspiracy that make this series so interesting for me, was a little disappointing. I just got a glimpse of that in the last chapters, so yeah, I'm a little gutted.
I have not lost faith in this series. I'm pretty sure Gus will give me a hell of a good time in the next book, she is the character that made this book for me. Sorry Dax, I still love you but your book... not so much.
Anyway, I will be here waiting for Gus. See you soon my Perfect Gentlemen.
Big Easy Temptation
3.5 Stars
Series note: This is book #3 in The Perfect Gentlemen and continues immediately from where the previous book ended. As such, the series must be read in order.
The story is presented in three different time periods: Dax and Holland's initial meeting nine years prior to the events of Seduction in Session, followed by their investigation into the death of Dax's father three years earlier, and finally a return to the present and the revelations concerning the ongoing story arc.
When done well, flashbacks can contribute significantly to character and plot development. However, in this case, it is a mixed bag. While the details concerning Dax's father are interesting and necessary for advancing the storyline, the romance in these sections is problematic primarily due to Dax and Holland's inevitable separation and the fact that the reader is constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.
That said, Dax and Holland have the sweetest romance of the three so far. It is obvious that they care deeply for one another, and the hurt and betrayal that keep them apart are heart-breaking. Their reconciliation in the present is one of the best aspects of the book despite one or two asshat moments on Dax's part and Holland's tendency toward being too forgiving.
With regard to the conspiracy, there are some excellent twists and turns and some great actions scenes. Nevertheless, there are still more questions than answers and I look forward to finally learning the truth behind it all.
Dax's sister, Augusta Spencer, and the 4th Perfect Gentleman, Roman Calder, are the focus of the next book, and I look forward to the feisty Gus finally putting Roman and his machinations in their place.
~ 4 Second Chance Stars ~
Big Easy Temptation is the third book in the Perfect Gentleman Series by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake. These books are interconnected standalones. Each book is about a new couple but the storyline is a continuing story. I don't believe these books could be read out of order. I truly believe you would be very confused and lost if this series isn't started with the first book (Scandal Never Sleeps).
As with the previous books, I can’t talk too much about the mystery storyline. Anything I say pertaining to the continuing plot would be a spoiler. I will say this….this book does answer some of the questions that the other books raise. Things start to make sense after reading this book. NO the mystery isn’t completely solved in this book, but one aspect was. You will be left with more questions after reading this book, that I am sure will be answered in the next book. As with the other books, the authors set up the next book nicely in the last chapter. I think Roman’s book will be an interesting one. I feel a lot of angst coming!!!
Besides this book being an amazing romantic suspense story, this third book is actually also a second chance romance between Holland and Dax. This book is broken into 2 parts. Part 1 is Dax and Holland in the past and their relationship. Part 2 is told in the present time and takes off exactly where the second book ended. I will say that my only real complaint with this book was, I felt that it focused too much on the past between Holland and Dax. I didn’t think half of the book needed to be taken up to explain everything. To me it took away from the mystery of the story and kind of slowed the pace down too much. With that said I still enjoyed this book, but just not as much as the first book in the series.
The mystery line of the plot is my favorite part of this series. These authors have me on the edge of my seat, just waiting to see how this will all work out in the end. I want all the answers to my questions!!!! The love story of each of the books is also good, but it wouldn’t upset me if it wasn’t as big of a part as the suspense aspect.
These authors do know how to create a steamy book though. The sex scenes in this book and the others are off the charts. I also love that they didn’t overload the book with sex. These books are a great mix of romance, mystery, suspense and sex. Their writing styles mesh so well everything is just seamless!!
Again if you are a fan of the romantic suspense type love story, or just someone looking for something new and different to read, then I would definitely recommend this book/ series. This is also a great book for anyone who is a fan of the second chance romance. But don’t forget….READ these books in order!!! If you love a storyline with a lot of twists and turns, then this is a series you don’t want to miss. You won’t see anything coming….these authors will keep you guessing ;)
In the wake of his father’s death, NCIS agent Holland Kirk betrayed him, so Naval officer Dax Spencer has tried to put her behind him but in unraveling a web of lies, the clues send him back to New Orleans where Holland waits in this commanding romance.
Holland is protecting a deadly secret and holding a torch for the only man she’s ever loved and the readers can’t help but get caught up in this powerful and gripping tale as the passion flares hot and wild between Dax and Holland once again. With the sizzling chemistry between these two the readers can’t help but feel as if they belong together but this relationship is in quite a bit of trouble which grips readers by the heart with the potent emotional turmoil that flows from the pages. These strong characters are captivating and easily engage readers which adds to the allure of the fast paced, smooth flowing plot full of suspense, excitement and romance.
This is one relationship that really speaks to readers because of the very long and hard road that it takes, which keeps anticipation building while something sinister lurks around every corner and keeps the adrenaline pumping excitement flowing which if you have kept up with the series so far you know that this intriguing conspiracy just keeps getting more compelling and deadly with lots of twists and turns that keep readers guessing, especially as it seems that the more the Perfect Gentlemen uncover, the more they realize just how deep the rabbit hole goes.
As usual the scenes are well written and full of great details that really made it easy for me to become caught up in all the intrigue and romance, so it didn’t surprise me one bit when I realized that I forgot all about the real world (much to my family’s annoyance) and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
This book sounds like I would love it! It's an NCIS agent and a Navy Captain, and they've known each other for years, but now with his father's apparent suicide and the scandal that led up to it, they're back in touch. Seriously, I've been wanting an NCIS type romance forever! And that's why I'm so bummed this isn't working for me. I did finish it, but by about 50% in, I started skimming. I can't put my finger on why I don't love it. It's just...okay I guess. I don't care for the heroine, Holland. I think she's boring. I don't like how the hero and heroine admit they could be married to each other but Holland was too scared to give in.
I do like how the hero was willing to leave his job for her though, and I think that's a nice change. I also loved how realistic the military and procedural parts were. These authors did their homework!
I've had this book sitting in my TBR pile for longer than I want to admit.
BUT
Honestly, I'm really glad I waited to read it because I was able to read this book and Smoke and Sin (#4) sequentially, which now has me waiting on the edge of my seat-completely biting my nails to find out the mystery in the final book, At the Pleasure of the President, which is releasing soon!!
GAH!!!
These ladies know how to write a fantastic series arc and steamy love story which has only built to its pinnacle. I'm so looking forward to the fifth and final book.
In Big Easy Temptation, we learn the story behind Dax and the mystery involving the death of his father. This brings him to the one woman who got away, Holland Kirk.
These two have a blazing chemistry from the get go which doesn't go away after years and blazing mistakes between the two of them.
As death closes in and choices must be made it isn't easy to walk away, or is it?
This is a weird three star rating because I really was into this for the first half to 2/3 of the book, but then the end was a real letdown. This needed far more groveling, far more addressing the Courtney thing, and far less of Holland bearing the brunt of everything that happened. Just a real downer of a resolution for a couple that had the potential to be my faves. Holland deserves the world, and really, there was no reason that Dax couldn't give it to her. This book didn't do right by them, it left me feeling pretty meh after what had been a great buildup. If you're gonna do the hero gets wasted, runs off to Vegas and marries heroine's best friend literally 24 hours after they break up thing, then I'm sorry, the hero has to do way more work on the back end to make the reunion work.
Big Easy Temptation is the third book in The Perfect Gentlemen series written by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake. Just when I thought this writing duo had successfully perfected the art of collaboration, I read BET and realize the best was yet to come. WOW! It was all so electric - the action, the mystery, the secrecy, the emotions, the jaw-dropping twists, and the tension and chemistry between the characters. It stands to reason this second-chance story would seize me from page one and not let go.
Daxton Spencer is a handsome, sexy as sin Naval officer who has worked hard to make a name for himself while moving up the ranks the honest way, despite his family and friend connections. Like the five other Perfect Gentlemen, working hard also means he plays hard. The fact he has a bit of a reputation is why NCIS agent Holland Kirk does not take his advances seriously nor is she keen on giving someone like him any trust in regards to relationships. Holland is a total bad-ass when it comes to her job. She’s confident, qualified, and more than capable. I loved her from the moment she’s introduced. She plays the tough girl who doesn’t entertain anything feminine, that is until Dax brings out emotions and vulnerabilities she’s never allowed herself to feel before. While starting an affair with a Navy playboy who ships out for months at a time is not something she ever plans to let happen, their undeniable chemistry is hard to ignore, even for her. Dax is relentless and pulls out all the seducing stops to prove Holland should give them a chance. His pursuits are filled with passion and dirty talk that will curl your toes and melt your panties.
We know from previous books Dax had a Vegas wedding that did not last long, and also that he beats himself up for it on a regular basis. What we didn’t know was why and how it all came to be. I love it when I can totally be taken off guard and shocked by characters’ backstories. The tumultuous ten-year journey of Dax and Holland is painstakingly revealed in a detailed flashback that shook me to my core. Knowing betrayal and heartbreak are words often associated with second-chance-at-love story arcs, I still was not prepared for the magnitude of emotions brought on by these character’s decisions. I loved Dax and Holland equally, and even though I understood the reasoning behind their choices, it did nothing to soften the blow of the pain they caused each other. The compelling writing had me completely immersed in the story. The hurt was palpable and I actually ached and mourned their loss.
In some cases, no amount of time can dim the hurt when that hurt is caused by the person you love. Years later, new information to help clear his father’s name sends Dax back to New Orleans and……. Holland. As expected, their reunion is anything but smooth. As they try to keep it professional, outsmart and outrun the bad guys, jumping each other’s bones should not be on the menu. When something is meant to be, it just is and there’s no denying it. As complicated as their situation seemed, I was pulling for them HARD! I have NEVER wanted a couple to forgive and reconcile more than these two. After everything they’d been through, they deserved a happy life.
By the end, things are really beginning to heat up, and while we’ve been given a few more pieces of the big puzzle, more questions arise that need to be answered before we can ever think about solving this on-going mystery. I am 100% invested, not only in the story but also the characters. Visiting the previous couples and having them intermingle and all become close friends has been an added bonus.
This is a must read, so prepare yourself for an emotionally thrilling and sexy ride set in the native home to mystery and intrigue - The Big Easy.
The Perfect Gentlemen series by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake is completely captivating. These five men – these “Perfect Gentlemen” – and the women who round them out are some of the most compelling characters I’ve met in suspenseful romance. They are so very far from perfect, and yet they wear the hero moniker well. None of the three books out so far in this series has disappointed, and in fact, the further down the rabbit hole we get, the better the books.
Big Easy Temptation lent an especially emotional aspect to the story’s building blocks. We’re still trying to find out who killed the sixth member of the group – Maddox – and how that all ties in to the current president and Perfect Gentleman, Zack. In this third book, though, we see the lengths a son will go to in order to clear his family name. More than that, though, we see how far a woman in love will go in order to protect her man.
In Big Easy Temptation, many more layers to the overarching conspiracy are revealed. Some questions are answered. Many others are asked in their place. But, the part of the puzzle that’s worked on in this book has a personal tie to Dax, the Perfect Gentleman who is the Naval officer. Dax’s father was disgraced, when a scandal was revealed and he committed suicide in its wake. Heartbroken and determined to get to the bottom of a situation that makes no sense to him, Dax turns to a woman he can’t get out of his mind for help – NCIS prosecutor Holland Kirk.
Nearly half of this book occurs in the past – three years in the past, to be exact. We know in the beginning that Dax and Holland fell in love. We know they were working on clearing his dad’s name together. And we know that they bitterly broke up and that Dax has neither forgiven her or forgotten her. And, now he needs her help again. So, we spend most of the first half of the book rehashing their backstory so that the story in the present makes more sense.
At first I just wanted to get to the NOW, so I didn’t want to be bothered by so much THEN. But, after a chapter or two, I was very glad that the authors did things this way. That backstory is absolutely vital to what’s happening in the present. And, it added so much feeling and understanding as to why Holland and Dax broke up and why they both are still so torn up about it after so much time has passed.
I loved Dax from the moment I met him in book 1. I loved him so much more in this book. He has so much love for his mother and his sister. He doesn’t want to clear his father’s name to pave an easier way for him in his career – he wants to do it so that his loved ones can breathe easier and be content with their memories. He’s compassionate and protective and so loving toward the women in his life.
But Holland- just, WOW. I don’t think I’ve ever met a stronger female character. She fell in love and made a hard choice – the hardest choice ever. But, for her, it was the only choice in order to protect the people SHE loved. And then she lived with that for a very long time. I love that she didn’t make Dax’s road to redemption easy – he had A LOT to apologize for. I also love that she didn’t wait too long before she admitted that there was no way she would turn him away for good.
As has been the case with every other Perfect Gentleman novel, Big Easy Temptation was action-packed and full of many nail-biting moments. The closer we get to Zack’s story and the final book in the series, the more dangerous things seem to get. The wait in between books is such delicious torture, but one I will gladly endure since I want answers as much as these characters do.
Big Easy Temptation is my new series favorite! I loved it! It's one of those books you end up staying up all night reading because you can't put it down and that's exactly what I did. Big Easy Temptation is the third book in Shayla Black and Lexi Blake's Perfect Gentlemen series and I recommend reading the first two books before picking up this one. While they can be read as standalones each book is about a different gentleman in a group of powerful men that met in boarding school. I love all of Shayla Black and Lexi Blake's Perfect Gentlemen in this series but Dax *fans face* is the perfect man. He's ultimate alpha male hero material. Holland Kirk and Dax Spencer's story is a second chance romance full of hot romance and page turning suspense. I recommend this book for romantic suspense lovers that want a hot love story with the thrills of a great suspense story. I can't wait to read the rest of the Perfect Gentlemen's stories. This series is on my favorites list and I can't wait to see what happens next in the next release.
Safety Level: Safe with exceptions. Hero and heroine were together three years before. Hero and heroine were with other people during their separation, including heroine's former best friend, whom the hero married as a means to inflict hurt after the heroine hurt him. No sex scenes with other men or women within the book.
Cliffhanger: No on the romance. Yes on the general series arc.
Ending: HEA
I am in love with this book. While Gabriel Bond is still my favorite hero, so far, this book is just as amazing as any of the books in the series. Dax is a compelling hero. He wasn't the smooth operative like Connor or the dashing executive like Gabriel. What he had was a pull that's difficult to explain. It was just easy to be drawn to him. Maybe it's the accent, his Southern upbringing, or the fact that he was always sure about what he wants.
Holland, on the other hand, was a great heroine. Their love story isn't one that safety lovers will enjoy. Their romance spanned a decade before they finally got their HEA. Usually, I prefer the safe side, but this story shows just how much can change over time, that sometimes, the right love with the right people happens at the wrong time, and it's not anyone's fault. It just wasn't meant to be at that time.
Ms. Black and Ms. Blake definitely know their craft. The scenes are hot, suspenseful, and thrilling. I just couldn't stop myself, I had to read it from cover to cover as fast as I possibly could. I couldn't put it down because it felt like I would be missing a huge part of the puzzle. I just wanted to find out how the information they get to gather in this book would be helpful to that huge puzzle over Mad's death and Zach's connection to what the Russians are planning.
I see that Calder's book is next, and let me just say, GIVE ME THAT BOOK NOW!!!! Seriously, I've been waiting to find out exactly what kind of woman would bring Calder to his knees, he, who seems to always be in control, who fixes things and messes, who always works in the background, who can be vicious when it came to protecting his friends. All I can say is that knowing who is heroine is going to be just made me even more excited for his book.
And once again, I am still hoping against all hopes that Mad is alive after all.
