My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: http://witandsin.blogspot.com/2016/05...

Return to the lovely small town of Cricket Creek, Kentucky with Wish upon a Wedding . LuAnn McLane’s tenth Cricket Creek novel doesn’t lack charm, but it also doesn’t meet its full potential.

Sophia and Avery make an adorable couple. They both obviously like one another, but between Sophia not wanting to open herself up and face potential rejection and Avery having been burned by love once before, the two have been constantly dancing around each other. A pretend relationship that should put a stop to Avery’s sister’s attempts to get Avery back with his ex is the much-needed push for Sophia and Avery to realize their attraction is mutual. Fake relationships becoming real is a fun romance trope I always enjoy, and I was looking forward to seeing how it worked out in this book. Unfortunately, I felt like Ms. McLane fell into the trap of telling instead of showing. To me, there was very little on-page development for Sophia and Avery, and this was such a pity, for they had good chemistry and their love story could have been excellent.

All of the Cricket Creek novels that I’ve read have featured a secondary romance, and Wish upon a Wedding is no exception. Avery’s uncle, Easton, and Sophia’s friend, Carrie Ann, are an endearing couple with a far more realized storyline than the supposed primary couple of the tale. Despite the book’s blurb, Carrie Ann and Easton seemed like the main couple of this book, and theirs was a delightful love story with the message that it’s never too late to face your fears, take a risk, and find your own happily ever after.

Wish upon a Wedding is a case of missed opportunity, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad book. I still liked it as fluffy entertainment, but this really wasn’t the strong installment of the Cricket Creek series. I really wanted to love Wish upon a Wedding , but I was a bit frustrated we only skimmed the surface of Avery and Sophia’s relationship. Even with this disappointment, I’m still looking forward to the next Cricket Creek novel.

This book was sweet. As with the 9 other books in the Cricket Creek series there is a secondary romance developing with an older couple. I have just two small complaints that kept me from giving a 5 star rating. First, I wish there was more story with our main H/h; sadly the secondary story felt as if it could have been the main. And second, Ashley the b*tch of the story should have gotten her comeuppance. She got away with too damn much. I am looking forward to the next in the series coming in December.

If the Cricket Creek books were a food, they'd be a potato chip. There is nothing nutritionally redeeming about them and in fact you are aware that there are things about them that are actively bad for you. You know you probably shouldn't like them as much as you do, and yet when you reach the bottom of the bag, you're like, "what? Did I really eat them all? But I want more!"

These books are pure guilty pleasure fare and they don't take place in anything remotely resembling the real world. There is absolutely no diversity of any kind; Cricket Creek is the whitest, most able-bodied, straightest and most nominally Christian town anywhere in the world. Every female character sounds the same and every male character sounds the same, except for one transplant from England who speaks in hilariously stilted British slang. The dialogue can border on groan-worthy and I always have to flip past the explicit parts. If I were rating these books based purely on quality they would never clear a two-star rating.

And yet I can't help but be sad that the next book in the series is the last one that's available right now, because frankly, there aren't many romance authors out there writing with LuAnn McLane's comic chops. Her knack for making physical comedy come alive on the page is what keeps me reading; it's like a rom-com in book format, and sometimes, that's exactly what the doctor ordered.

I have chosen to read this book because I wanted to read about Avery and Sophia’s relationship. Despite it being the main story, I ended up reading more about his Uncle Easton and Carrie Ann who was supposed to be the secondary story. I felt like Avery and Sophia’s story was not bought out to the full potential. It was not a bad book, but I honestly want more of Sophia and Avery..

I continue to enjoy this series - makes me wish I could move to Cricket Creek. Wonderful characters with rich emotional lives. I would enjoy a little more conflict/suspense/intensity of some kind to spice things up a little more.

OMG this series gets better and better with each book I read. Sophia and Avery started out as fake dating then fell in love along the way. Avery's uncle Easton finally admitted his feelings for Carrie Ann and they are getting married. Will Avery and Sophia live happily ever after??

Sometimes, bad reviews are the most fun to write. Other times, it just makes me, well, sad. And this is one of those times. This was a book that just didn't work for me on any level. I felt that the potential was there, but it just never materialized.

I should start with a quick disclaimer. I didn't realize when I agreed to read this book that it was the 10th in a series. Because of that, I felt like the action had started long before the first page and that I was missing out on some character development. If I had read the earlier the books, this might not have been an issue. So, even though the lack of character development irked me, it is the one thing I'm willing to give a pass.

I did have moderately high expectations for this book, simply because the set up was intriguing. There are two things going on. One is a the "two people pretend to fall in love for show, only to fall in love in reality. It sounds dorky, but it is pretty common in romance novels and it does tend to work for me. The other part of it is a good old fashioned love triangle--I hate to admit it, but I'm a sucker for those. The problem is that the book really isn't either of these things. The characters are already in love with each other at the beginning, which eliminates pretty much all romantic tension. The love triangle, such as it is, is more a case of a jealous third party.

There are actually two love stories here, which is...odd. I couldn't quite figure out where McLane was going with that, but it came off as if she had two stories, neither of which were strong enough on their own to support a book, so she put the two of them together. Instead of creating one complete book, it just felt unfinished and I wasn't able to get emotionally involved in either story.

I was problems with McLane's writing. For one thing, she spends far more time telling than showing. I get it--there are times when you just have to tell, but those should be few and far between. Here, it is the bulk of the narrative. All that does is keep a wall between the reader and the story, which prevents the reader from forming any sort of emotional attachments to the characters. There were also long passages to catch up the readers on what apparently happened in the first 9 books of the series--which did nothing more than to take up space because most of the characters did not even play a part in this book.

The characters were another problem for me--they were all so, well, perfect. I don't think any of them had any flaws, except Ashley (the third corner in the triangle), who was all flaws. No one had any depth at all and none were believable.

This problem was amplified by the dialogue. None of the characters had an individual voice! So, if I picked up the book in the midst of a section of dialogue, I'd have no idea what characters were speaking. The male characters, Avery and Easton, were not even very male. I don't want to say they were exactly feminine, but they definitely came across more like female characters than male. I can't even tell you how many passages there were of these two men dissecting their feelings. Don't get me wrong, men talking about feelings is a good thing--but what is presented here is just plain unrealistic.

Finally, I felt the text needed a few more run-throughs with editors and copy editors. I wouldn't say that it was littered with grammatical errors, but there were enough for it to be noticeable. There was also just some messy issues that should never have made it to print. One example (it was near the end of the book, so it is fresh in my mind) took place when two characters were chatting in a hot tub. At one point, the jets come on...which is find. We then have a few paragraphs of dialogue which, again, had its own issue...and then we're told again that the jets come on--which just happened a few paragraphs before. This is the sort of thing that should be corrected before the book makes it to print.

I really wish this book had worked for me. The premise had great promise, but I think the story may have been doomed from the start.

Wish Upon a Wedding

Synopsis:

A little lie leads to delicious complications in the latest Cricket Creek romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Written in the Stars.

Review:

Forget wondering if a certain individual will move back to Cricket Creek, Kentucky. After reading Wish Upon a Wedding, I want to move to Cricket Creek. Ms McLane has created a delightful small town containing a wide range of interestingly named businesses, including From this Moment, Walking on Sunshine, Wine and Diner, Flower Power, Sully’s Tavern, and Broomstick Brewery. Who wouldn’t love to live in a town with such interesting shops and restaurants.

The town also contains an area called Wedding Row, and one of the main characters of the story, Sophia Gordon, is presented an opportunity to open a business in partnership with her hairdresser, sassy Carrie Ann Spencer, owner of the hair salon, A Cut Above. This new business is the brainchild of Carrie Ann and would be another wonderfully named wedding beauty salon, White Lace and Promises.

This story is much more than a simple ‘will they or won’t they’ love story about the sweet, big city girl Sophia falling for a the ‘handsome-as-sin’ Avery Dean, a local repair man with a ‘whiskey-smooth’ voice. Hello Avery! This is also a story of late-in-life love developing between two older people whose past family life experiences have prevented them from developing long term relationships in past. I loved and was drawn to the struggles Carrie Ann and her love interest, Easton Fisher, experienced and enjoyed following them on their journey as they come to realize that past family circumstances should not prevent them from falling in love and committing to a long term. The ride is bumpy be and enjoyable one to follow along with.

The author deftly weaves both couples stories together and keeps the reader interested. I was very keen to discover how Sophia and Avery would be able to get past the infidelity Avery experienced in his previous relationship, as well as uncomfortable encounters they had with Avery’s ex-fiancee. I was also rooting for Carrie Ann and Easton to be able to put the past behind them and find true love.

I am looking forward to more stories from Cricket Creek as I feel there are plenty left to tell and I’d love to continue reading them.

3.5 Stars

I’ve been reading this series since the beginning, and I can honestly say that while it was wonderful to revisit the charming town of Cricket Creek, Kentucky, and all of its inhabitants, this book didn’t pack the usual punch that Ms. McLane is accustomed to delivering.

I enjoyed the pairing of Sophia and Avery. They had good chemistry and were fun, exciting characters. However, the story as to how their romance evolved was lackluster and disappointing. The in-depth details of their affair seemed to be placed on the back burner without the normal light being shed on the main couple’s journey to happily ever after. It was as if I were being told a tale by someone who has heard the story passed down…not being given the chance to truly live their romance.

Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed reading the book. It’s still Cricket Creek. It’s still Luann McLane. It is still full of potential characters and the usual antics. And I am completely understanding of the fact that sometimes it takes a not so fabulous story to lead you in to one that completely blows your socks off. That’s what I’m hoping happens here. I’m tickled that Avery and Sophia found their happy ending after tip-toeing around the inevitable. I just wish it had been written in a much better fashion.

Here’s hoping book number eleven will blow my socks off!

OK read, didn't like the story lines as much as in the rest of the series, maybe because it kept alternating between two couples who were so similar she could have just had one set.

Mix the tried-and-true premise of the fake wedding date with sweet, Southern charm, and you’ve got Wish Upon a Wedding by Luann McLane. Unbeknownst to me, this is book 10 in McLane’s Cricket Creek series. I will definitely be checking out the previous books!

Not being invested in the series or the characters, I found the beginning of the book a little slow, however, once I got a feel for the characters, I was engaged in the story. McLane has created a charming small town and filled it with quintessential Southerners. I liked almost all the characters. I say almost, because Ashley, the conniving ex-girlfriend, is one of those characters you just love to hate. She uses saccharine-sweet Southern double entendres and not-so-subtle bullying to push Sophia out of the picture. You can probably guess that Ashley is the primary antagonist in the story. Thankfully, smart, thoughtful Sophia is not a total pushover. She and Avery have genuine chemistry, and you just know they are meant to be together! I particularly enjoyed Carrie Ann and Easton; individually they’re great characters, and together they’re a sweet couple. Their later-in-life romance is a treat.

“You sure know how to kiss a woman, Easton Fisher.”
“No, not any woman…only you”
--Carrie Ann & Easton

There is a large cast of secondary characters that have probably been introduced in prior books. I didn’t have a solid feel for all of them, but there is a strong sense of a cohesive community and family. There are a couple scenes that embody that feeling. I loved the heart-to-heart conversation between Max and Avery at the bachelor-party weekend. Even though it is meant to be Max’s wild weekend, his sentimental advice to his best friend Avery is all about deserving true love and happiness.

“You deserve happiness. So start thinking about your own life, for once.” --Max

Avery gets a lot of advice that weekend—even his usually grumpy father gets in on setting things right when he “coincidentally” comes to Avery’s rescue with a ride home.

“How’d you get so smart?”
“Years of bein’ stupid. I got all those years of doin’ things wrong out of the way…” --Avery & his dad

Wish Upon a Wedding is filled with sweet Southern charm, sexy fun, and a few heart-tugging, emotional moments. The leisurely pace mirrors that of the South on a hot summer day—there’s no rush to get somewhere, and you’ll enjoy every moment of the journey. Grab yourself a glass of sweet tea and settle in with this sweet romance.

A 3.5 star read for me.

My Review:

Cricket Creek kind of reminds me of Macombers series. You follow the characters of the town and each of them has a story and as a reader you get to explore the town and their lives and how they all kind of mingle or take place on their own but each of them is fairly different despite using the predictable formulas these kind of stories follow. I like the characters and I like getting to be in the world that the author creates.

Wish Upon a Wedding by LuAnn McLane is the 10th book in her wonderful Cricket Creek series. I am a big fan of this series by McLane. In each and every book, she manages to give us another sweet romance; a great couple, and spending time with those we have grown to love in Cricket Creek.

Sophia Gordon is due to leave Cricket Creek to return to NY, but after enjoying the small town atmosphere, seeing her family settle there, and the friends she found has caused her to have second thoughts. Avery Dean is our hero, who recently broke up with his fiancée, who had cheated on him. To get his sister Zoe off his back, he and Sophia, who have become friends, devise a plan to pretend to be dating, so his ex leaves him alone. Best laid plans; as usual do not always work out.

Sophia was a great heroine, always fun and likable, except when talking to Avery’s ex, Ashley. Sophia will decide to stay in Cricket Creek, as she will go into business with her friend Carrie Ann, opening a salon, White Laces and Promises, on Wedding Row. Carrie Ann also has a new romance quickly building with Avery’s uncle Easton. Slowly, both Avery and Sophia begin realize that their pretend relationship has become real. With Zoe and Max’s upcoming wedding, Ashley is part of the wedding party, as is Avery, and the misguided attempts by Zoe (who doesn’t know the real reason about his breakup with Ashley), will make things uncomfortable. Will Sophia be able to stop the attempts by Ashley to win Avery back? Will Avery get past his fears of being hurt again?

This was a double sweet story of two wonderful romances. The extra added fun of seeing our previous couples in Cricket Creek always makes this a pleasure to read. I loved both Avery and Sophia, as they made a fun, likable, sweet and sexy couple. The older couple, Carrie Ann and Easton was also very well done. Once again, I had fun in Cricket Creek, and think it’s time you meet these wonderful people, in case you haven’t done so yet. Looking forward to visiting Cricket Creek again soon. If you love sweet small town romances, you can never go wrong reading anything by LuAnn McLane.

This is my first book by McLane and also book number ten in this series and honestly it started out a bit on the slow side for me. I'm not sure if i feel that way because I haven't read the previous books or not but I will definitely want to start this series from the beginning one of these days.

Once the book started to pick up I got more a feel for the characters and really began to like the town of Cricket Creek. Again since I didn't read the previous books I got the feeling that Avery and Sophia knew each other in previous one to Wish Upon a Wedding. Sophia is only in town a short while to help out her family and her and Avery have become friends. Avery is trying to move on from his ex but with his sisters wedding coming up and her trying to get them back together he needs a date. When their fake relationship takes a turn to real it's not a surprise to them since they both have a thing for one another.

As I continued to read I really started to like Avery and Sophia more then I thought I would. They were both great individuals and really got along quite well. I did like how Sophia wasn't a push over when it came to dealing with Ashley who is Avery's ex.

This story also had a side love story between Carrie Ann and Easton. Normally I don't enjoy side love stories because I feel the two main characters need all the pages but this one didn't bother me. They are an older couple who started a late in life romance but they had really great chemistry. And their story really ties in with Avery and Sophia's.

The one thing I couldn't keep up with were all the side characters. Because this is book ten I expected as much but I still couldn't keep everyone straight at times.

One of my favorite parts is when Sophia gets stuck in the washing machine and Avery comes to her rescue. It was a honestly a cute and funny part.

I didn't totally fall in love with this book but I did enjoy it until the very end. I was completely over the moon how this couples HEA turned out.

Ex-wives, Avery Dean knows all about them, His ex-wife seems to always be around. Avery's sister is always making attempts to get the two of them back together. Now, of all things, Avery's ex is going to be maid of honor at his sister's wedding. He will have to endure hours of his matchmaking sister and his ex wife. He is to be the best man. Wow! Will Avery every shed the ex? Isn't being down enough? It has to be rubbed in. Avery Dean is a good looking hunk of man who is a handyman. What will happen when heart broken Avery Dean sees a new comer in Cricket Creek, Kentucky? Sophia Gordon has been visiting Cricket Creek and has fallen in love with the town, denying, or trying to deny her attraction to Avery Dean. Will Avery and Sophia meet up? Will the ex get back with Avery? The author, Luann McLane brings another lovely, with a touch of adoring sex, story of life in Cricket Creek. You will become attached in a way, to Avery Dean and Sophia. The author gives you two characters that you really want to win and have their dreams come true, but will they? I like the way she put in a lot of humor into the book. It kept it on a light note. Nice for a change. Don't let this pass you by. After reading this Cricket Creek book, I'm looking forward to reading more of the author's books.

Wish Upon A Wedding By Luann McLane is another wonderful story in her Cricket Creek series.

Local handyman Avery Dean just can’t seem to get away from his ex. It doesn’t help matters that she is the maid of honor in his sisters wedding. But Avery loves his sister so he will keep a smile on his face and muddle through it. Avery comes up with the perfect plan to convince everyone he has moved on by pretending to date newcomer Sophia Gordon.

Sophia Gordon originally was only going to stay in town to help out her family. The small town charm is really growing on her. Plus she is wildly attracted to Avery Dean. When he suggest a pretend relationship, what could possible go wrong?

Spending so much time together during the pre wedding festivities as Sophia and Avery giving into their mutual attraction. Will Avery be able to convince Sophia to make Cricket Creek her permanent home?

I just love this series, its so fun and sexy and delightful. I love how there is a secondary romance with a bit more mature characters. Avery and Sophia are a dream come true couple. Looking forward for the next book.

I liked the book overall, especially the secondary romance between Easton and Carrie Ann. The main issue I had was that there was little comeuppance for the villain. Yes, she was called out on her actions a few times, but I was expecting there to be this big confrontation at the end, which never happened. Also, it was kind of annoying having some of the previous characters from the other books introduced by the plot of their book. Example: Instead of just simply saying that someone was the bartender or the florist, we had to get information like who they were married to and how they got together. There was one character in particular who constantly got referred to despite not even making an appearance. I understand that this book is meant to be a standalone as well as enjoyable for those who have read the previous books, but sometimes it just feels like overkill.

However, despite those problems, I'm still eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series. I just wish I didn't have to wait until December to read it, lol

I want to move to Cricket creek I loved this story so much. It was so nice to have Sophia and Carrie Ann stories at the same time. Sophia works at A Cut Above a hair salon in Cricket creek until she goes back to her old job in New York, she doesn't want to leave but she can't survive doing just simple styles. Carrie Ann her boss sees how much she likes Avery so she suggests they open up a bridal salon so Sophia agrees to stay. She and Avery decide to pretend date so his ex girlfriend Ashley will leave him alone. They begin to have feelings for each other but his ex puts a wrench in that so Sophia tells him to decide what he wants. In the meantime Carrie and and Avery's uncle Easton have been pussyfooting around each other for years and finally decide to go for it and date. This story is full of love and hope and some happy endings and I throughly enjoyed it

I wasn't expecting much out of this, since I don't do typical romance books. I needed it for a challenge, however, so I decided to give it a shot.

I really enjoyed it, overall. Sophia's short girl problems are my life, so I could really relate. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read through the series first, so I had an idea of the characters, but I obviously didn't here. The first book is on my to-read list now, though. :)

I loved Sophia she had so much playfulness about her, “down the hallway and to the right,” she said in a breathless voice that he found sexy as hell. “This is fun. I want you to carry me around everywhere.” I liked this book, Avery was a good man.
