Every town keeps its secrets warm. Grey Narrows left one out in the cold.
At the top of the world, past the last road south, Grey Narrows should have died when the company packed up and left. It refused. It had the lake, the old mine shafts, the long dark — and its own quiet way of the arithmetic of who counts and who doesn't, who belongs and who can be let go.
It has done that arithmetic before. Once, it was sure of itself, and it was cruel, and it moved on, the way towns do. But towns forget. A mother doesn't. A town, in the end, is only as strong as the story it tells about itself.
At the edge of town, people go out into the storm and come back wrong, if they come back at all. And walking in out of the white is an impossible calm where there should be terror, warm where there should be nothing, watching the town the way the town once watched its own. A blindspot in the winter storm.
GREY is Book One of The Grey Duology, a novel of the Blindspot World. The story concludes in Womb.
