John F. MacArthur, Jr. was a United States Calvinistic evangelical writer and minister, noted for his radio program entitled Grace to You and as the editor of the Gold Medallion Book Award-winning MacArthur Study Bible. MacArthur was a fifth-generation pastor, a popular author and conference speaker, and served as pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California beginning in 1969, as well as President of The Master’s College (and the related Master’s Seminary) in Santa Clarita, California.
John MacArthur doesn’t disappoint! Comparing scripture with scripture and gives valuable application to equip the believer when life’s trials come. Respond with endurance, patience, and joy.
Another excellent book by John MacArthur! In this book he covers the purpose of our trials, how to triumph over them and who is responsible for our temptations. He discusses the difference between a trial and a temptation. There are questions at the end of each chapter so it can be used in a Bible study group. But my favorite part of the book is his excellent treatment of the sovereignty of God and how it relates to man's responsibility.
Great Bible study on some verses in James. A good reminder of Gods sovereignty in our trials. I enjoyed doing this study with 2 friends, the questions at the end of each chapter prompted good conversations. Listening to John Macarthur’s corresponding sermon with each chapter was helpful.
This booklet is very short and very MacArthur. There is not much that comes out of it. That is things you would not hear from him a lot. The format is different with a few steady questions and less it’s learned at the end of each chapter. But it does remind us that our trials revere our trust and enables us to help others. They caused us to respond with our view of the sovereignty of God and secondary doctrines such as eternal security. It is a reminder to keep the eternal benefit in mind. Our faith should lead to action and that there is nothing we can do to save ourselves.
"A satisfied fish takes no bait. So if you're filling yourself with the divine resources available to every believer, you'll find that temptations baited hook holds little attraction. Fill up on divine gifts. As eighteenth-century hymnwriter Robert Robinson wrote in 'Come, Thou Fount,' God's streams of mercy never cease. Nothing can eclipse His goodness or stop His benevolence. Don't substitute the devil's bait and thereby birth deadly sin."
