I genuinely cannot explain how many times this book made me laugh. The banter, the absolute chaos, the cats, the way these two interact? I was having the BEST time. This book had me laughing one minute and getting emotionally invested the next, and honestly, that combination is chef’s kiss.
The writing was excellent, and I thought the pacing was really well done. The story kept me engaged, and even when things were being thrown at me that had me wondering where we were going with them, they never felt pointless. I’ll admit, there were moments when I was worried I wasn't going to get answers to some of the questions the story planted in my head. Thankfully, everything came together in the end, and I was SO happy those details were addressed instead of just being left hanging.
Now, the romance. The best way I can describe it is that it was somewhat of a slow burn, but they also fell hard and fast. Does that even make sense? Because it does in my head, and I am standing by it. 😂 Their connection builds in a way that lets you understand them individually while watching them fall for each other, and I was completely sold.
Jubilee really got to me. She is a woman who is just trying to survive, and I think there is something so relatable about that. We all hide pieces of ourselves to protect ourselves, whether it’s our pain, our fears, or the parts of us we aren't sure the world will accept. Jubilee has learned to do that, but underneath it all, she has a whole lot of rage, too. And honestly? Sometimes that rage is exactly what helps her keep going. I loved seeing all those sides of her come through.
And Gage. Oh, Gage. Here is a man carrying pain from his past, blaming himself for things that continue to shape who he is and what he does. He has built his life around that guilt, and you can see how much it drives him. But what really got me was the way he sees Jubilee. He recognizes the person behind the defenses, the chaos, and the things she does to protect herself. He sees HER, and that meant something to me.
The fact that these two bond over the first victim, considering how their very first encounter happens, was such a perfect setup for this story. It was unexpected, chaotic, and exactly the kind of introduction that made me want to see where things would go. Add in Gage's need for order, Jubilee's talent for disrupting every ounce of it, their wicked banter, and SIX cats? I was sold.
This book gave me humor, spice, heart, characters with real emotional baggage, and a romance that had me rooting for them. It balanced the darker elements with so much personality that I never felt like the story lost what made it special.
And now I have one very important problem: I WANT MORE OF THIS COUPLE. I am not ready to leave Jubilee and Gage behind. I need more of their chaos, more of their banter, and more of these two figuring out life together.
Five stars from me! This was such a fun, well-written read, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark romcoms with morally complicated characters, unhinged humor, and a romance that sneaks up on your heart while you're busy laughing.
