B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
Holy cow what a tangent author B.J. Daniels has taken readers in the fourth brilliant installment of the MONTANA HAMILTONS romantic suspense series, HARD RAIN...
This time it's Harper Hamilton's time to meet her match. Finally home from her studies and traveling abroad, Harper races off on her horse, letting loose some of the recent frustrations that have inundated the Hamilton family since the return of her long believed to be dead mother, Sarah. Neighboring rancher Brody McTavish has had it bad for Harper for years and now that she is back in town, something has got to give. When he spots Harper presumably on a runaway horse, he rushes to her rescue only to find she's perfectly in control and more woman than he might be able to handle. After a very telling kiss the pair is distracted by Harper's perturbed horse and when they investigate the cause, the find a mummified corpse which has been unearthed by recent rain and mudslides.
Before Brody and Harper have a chance at starting up a mutually coveted relationship, the discovery of this body is sure to tear them apart. Brody has a good idea who the body is, and when his family finds out, all hell could loose between the McTavishes and the Hamiltons. Now a new murder case is afoot and knocking on the Hamilton's doors with decades old rumors coming to light. Harper is determined to make sure her family is protected and she will stop at nothing to find out who really is behind the crime. At the same time, she wants Brody to take a chance on a future, but the past keeps on getting in the way.
While all this is going on, the head of the Hamilton family, Buckmaster is going through his own troubles. With the death of his second wife, he comes to terms with first wife, Sarah being the love of his life, and he wants her back, even if it could possibly wreck his chances at the presidential race he has been aiming for. Sarah's twenty two year memory loss still leaves a multitude of questions from every member of the Hamilton family, including daughter, Kat, who still believes Sarah's memory loss and her return may have nefarious consequences.
HARD RAIN by the exceedingly clever B.J. Daniels is just superb. Having read each and every single word of this series so far, I feel personally invested in the Hamiltons and those who surround them. This story is an intricately woven tale with wind blowing mystery and a romance finally come to fruition after years of waiting. The characters are strong willed and have such depth. Brody is a honorable, hard-working man just waiting on his chance with the girl of his dreams, and Harper has been his dream for a long time. Younger than Brody but equally passionate and honorable, Harper has those same feelings Brody harbors for her, but they also are fiercely protective of their families. Watching how these two come to terms with all the road-blocks thrown at them is such a draw. Also, the more clues that are uncovered as to Sarah's past leave this reader on the fence as to whether to like or dislike her, but in all honestly, I am leaning towards her being a bad egg, and I hope for poor Buckmaster, who is so thoroughly in love with her that I am wrong. Or do I want to be wrong? Hmmmm... let's wait and see where B.J. Daniels takes us next!
Finally! Harper’s story. I’ve been dying to get to know her better throughout the series. Her outgoing attitude and mixed feelings with respect to the events surrounding her family was a lot of fun. The way that she comes to life was so approachable that she seemed oh so very real to me. I loved Brody as well. His conflicting concern for so many people vies with his need to do what’s right. He was so strong and loveable, and the perfect counterpoint for Harper’s impulsiveness.
Getting to know more about the family`s past put a lot of things throughout the series into perspective. It also opened up a great many questions leading into the next novel in the series. This balance gave me chills more than once. The way that little facts pop out at different times gave me a few ‘aha’ moments while also drawing me further and further into the mystery that spans this series.
This is all backed up with Daniels’ fantastic writing. She drew me into the tale, allowing me to participate in it, rather than simply reading it. The suspense throughout this novel was both apparent and subtle. The undercurrent gave me chills at times while I was trying to unravel it all. At the same time, the picturesque and vividly explicit descriptions allowed me to picture each moment of it.
Once again, Daniels has created a novel that I had a blast reading. Romance and suspense combine in perfect proportion, ending with the perfect lead-in to the next novel in the series.
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.
Fantastic book. The trials and tribulations for the Hamilton family just keep piling up. Harper has been away for most of the time since her mother's return from the dead, finishing school and doing some traveling. Now she's back on the ranch, and in an expression of her frustration over what is happening in her life she goes for a ride, galloping across the fields and screeching. What she didn't know was that Brody was nearby, and thinking that she's in trouble comes riding to her rescue. She lets him know that in no uncertain terms, but once they get past that dust-up, it becomes apparent that there is something flaring between them.
Harper has had a crush on Brody since she was nine years old, and has been waiting for the chance to do something about it. She's tired of feeling like she's invisible around him, and makes it clear that she's interested. Brody is stunned to say the least. He's been interested in Harper since she was sixteen, but she was way too young for him. Now, not only is she older, but it turns out she is just as into him. However, there is one obstacle, and that is the enmity between their two families. It is about to get worse, when they stumble on the remains of a human body. Those remains are of Brody's cousin, Maggie, who had disappeared thirty-five years earlier, and Harper's grandfather was believed to be responsible. Both Brody and Harper are determined to uncover the truth. Harper can't believe her grandfather would murder anyone. Brody isn't so sure, but he won't let Harper put herself in danger.
I liked both Harper and Brody. Both are strong-willed and won't let anyone discourage them from doing what they think is right. Harper tends to be a little on the naive side, I think, as she puts herself into some dangerous situations. Both of them are honorable, and want the truth, no matter what it turns out to be. I also loved the development of their relationship. Because of the resistance of their families, they have to fight harder to be together. Brody's determination to maintain his relationship with her, as well as pursue the truth about Maggie's murder, puts him at odds with his father and uncle. I hurt for him, and loved the way he stood up to them. Harper gets lectures from various members of her family, but it's the one from her mother that strikes closest to home. Can she take her happiness at the expense of his relationship with his family? I did like the end and seeing how both are determined to make it work for them.
The suspense of the story was excellent. Interspersed throughout were flashbacks to Maggie, JD, his wife Grace, and Harper's parents, Buck and Sarah. Each scene brings out a bit more of the events that led up to Maggie's death. In the current time, Brody and Harper, as well as Sheriff Curry, are trying to figure out who is responsible. Unfortunately for them, the suspect list gets longer instead of shorter. Every time I thought I had it figured out, someone else would come along and look more promising. A couple of attacks on Brody and Harper showed that someone believed that they were getting too close to the truth. The final confrontation was intense, with a twist I hadn't seen coming. I liked the way that Brody and Harper were able to stay pretty calm while it was happening and work together to bring the killer down. Loved Brody's ingenuity in bringing in help.
Also running through the book is the ongoing mystery of where Sarah has been for the last twenty-two years and what has brought her back. Russell is still working on a way to prove his theory, and uncovers some new information. Buck is happy to have Sarah back, but can't help having some questions of his own. Some of the things that came out in the flashbacks add to the feeling that there is something fishy going on. Even Russell is still working to figure out where she has been, though he has a more personal reason going on. An unexpected arrival at the end adds to Sarah's distress and complicates things even more. I'm really looking forward to the next two books and finally getting the truth.
Awesome! I just love this series. I've been reading all these so far. Harper Hamilton and Brody McTavish are trying to deny the attraction between them since there is bad blood between the families. The author teases us with tidbits of what happened years ago when Sarah Hamilton disappeared. I can't wait to get the full scoop.
I had to give five stars on this one!! Hard Rain caught my attention right away because of the new format that Mrs Daniels uses for the story line! The old and the new! By interspersing the last generation of Hamilton and McTavish story line with the present generation's story line, you almost get two for the price of one! But it tends to lend to the plot of the book by having the two stories parallel one another. When Brody McTavish and Harper Hamilton discover the remains of Brody's cousin, Maggie, they are thrown together to try and discover what really happened and who murdered her. Would it be Harper's grandfather? Or one of the many guys that Brody's cousin was accused of seeing? The many twists and turns in the story line is a great tool in Mrs Daniels writing. One time you think you know who the culprit is and the next chapter you are back to square one. I was happy to see that my favorite sheriff Frank and his wife Nettie were still solving crimes together in this book. I will miss them when this series is over. But it can't end until we find out about the mysterious Sarah, Harper's mother, and what she was up to those twenty-two years she was missing! Another great read by the amazing B J Daniels!
Harper can be a little forceful where her man is concerned at times, "she shook her head. “It has always been you, Brody.” She grabbed the front of his shirt. The snaps sang as she jerked it open and pressed her palms to his chest." I enjoyed this book, I liked the mystery it had.
Hard Rain by B.J.Daniels has it all, the beauty of the Montana mountains, a family secret that gets unearthed in a rain storm. Family feuds between the McTavish's and Hamilton's. A lost love and a new love. A rape, an old murder and a new one, a cover up and politicians running for president. need I say more? If that isn't enough to make you read this book then nothing can.
The mystery of what happened to Maggie McTavish. J.D. was running for president and very married but was in love with Maggie when she came up missing. The town has speculated for years wondering if he had something to do with her disappearance.
When Harper Hamilton and Brody McTavish find a body on Hamilton property it brings all of the past and speculation back again. Could Harper's grandfather J.D. had something to do with it or did someone else? Now Harper's father is running for president can his campaign weather the past coming back up again? Will Harper and Brody be able to be together with all the bad blood between the families? Then we have Sarah, Buckmaster's wife. Not saying she has done anything but I just don't trust that lady. She sure seems guilty of something. I really like the way Ms. Daniels pulls you into the story and makes all the characters come to life This is the first book that I have read by her and will not be the last. I now have to go back and read all the rest. :-) I highly recommend this book!

This is book #4 in what looks like a 6 book series about the Hamilton Sisters. This is Harper's book. Harper is a twin, she and Cassidy are also the youngest girls, and we haven't seen much of her in the previous books. Harper and her sister have been away for the whole dust up of the return of her mother. The whole family dynamic changes with Harper's search for answers to a decades old murder that she and Brodie McTavish uncover on the Hamilton ranch.
Brodie is 8 years older than Harper and has been in love with her forever. He has been patiently waiting for her to grow up before he declares himself. As a child, Brodie is the friend of her older sisters she dreamed of to carry her away in her romantic girlish fantasies. Now that she is older and back home to stay, she intends to make her fantasy reality. But there are obstacles to this HEA. The body they discover is Brodie's cousin who disappeared 35 years ago amid a scandal involving Harper's grandfather.
In addition to the mystery of who murdered Brodie's cousin, the ongoing mystery of Harper's mother also reveals some more clues as to what happened to her.
Oh my gosh what an exciting read. This is book 4 of the Montana Hamilton series and it still keeps you completely enthralled just like the other book in this series. Harper has just come back to Montana from Europe where she was getting her education. When she went for a horseback ride to celebrate an amazing day she never realized that she would run into Brody, the one man she has ever loved, or that she would find the one thing that could keep her and Brody apart forever. Brody has always liked and then loved Harper he just had to wait for her to grow up a little bit because of their age difference. Now when he finally has a chance with the one girl he has loved for what seems like forever a painful history between the McTavish and the Hamiltons comes up to ruin their one chance at happiness. This was a great romantic suspense filled novel that keeps you pulled in from the very beginning. I can't wait for the next novel from B.J Daniels. ~ A book obsessed chicks review team selection
Fourth in a series. I am enjoying this journey. The Hamilton family is full of hard working siblings. This story belongs to Harper. She is back from school and trying to find her place. She runs into her childhood crush from a neighboring ranch. The families are not exactly fast friends. To make matters worse, when she finally gets to spend time with Brody, a dead body pushes them apart again. After a lot of sleuthing together and apart, Harper and Brody fall for each other and risk family, life, and heart to stay with each other. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next to see how the next Hamilton finds their match. This is highly recommended.
I can't believe that this series just keeps getting better and better. I've loved all the books that I've read in this series and the next one won't be out soon enough for me. They are just so good that I couldn't put them down and this one was awesome. There's so much going on in each book and the twists are nail biting and heart wrenching. Brody McTavish and Harper Hamilton are star crossed lovers. The animosity between the two families is old history that has just been thrust into Brody and Harpers laps, and its about to threaten everything they hold dear.
This was February's "Serial Read" through the Barnes & Noble Nook app.
Harper Hamilton has had a crush on Brody McTavish since she was nine and he was hanging out with her older sisters. When she was sixteen, Brody decided he would marry Harper someday, when she grew up. So when Brody sees Harper galloping by on her horse, screaming at the top of her lungs, he does what any self-respecting cowboy would do--he rescues her. Only she doesn't need rescuing.
When they go to get Harper's horse, they discover a body. Brody realizes it's his cousin, Maggie, who disappeared some thirty years ago, before he was born. Recent rains have dislodged the earth, but it's obvious she was buried on Hamilton land. That Harper's grandfather, J.D. Hamilton, was suspected of having an affair with then 18-year-old Maggie before she disappeared adds to the bad blood between the McTavish family and the Hamilton family. And now Brody and Harper are caught up in it.
The sheriff, Frank Curry, begins investigating Maggie's murder, as do Harper and Brody. The town is small--everyone knows everyone; news and gossip travel fast. Maggie left a trail of broken hearts in high school and some of her former classmates still carry their resentment--and their secrets. Maggie's father, Flannigan McTavish, wants her buried and resents his nephew and Harper poking around. Sheriff Curry wants to confirm the truth that everybody seems to know. But the path to the truth isn't a straight line, becoming more complicated when it seems that someone is willing to kill.
A subplot concerns Harper's mother, Sarah Johnson, who disappeared twenty-two years earlier, only to have reappeared recently with no memory of where she has been or what has happened. Harper's father, Senator Buckmaster Hamilton, is a U.S. Senator from Montana, who has thrown his hat into the presidential primaries. His second wife, whom he married after Sarah was declared dead, has recently died in an auto accident. But Sarah is his first love and he wants to remarry her.
Ms. Daniels skillfully weaves several viewpoints into each chapter, including flashbacks to J.D. and Maggie, as well as Harper, Brody, Sarah, and Buckmaster. Because this is the fourth in the series, some previous events concerning Harper's older sisters are alluded to. I haven't read the earlier books, but this was not much of a problem. There's a lot of sexual tension between Harper and Brody and J.D. and Maggie, but no graphic sex.
My biggest hurdle with this book was the names of the characters. I mean, really--Buckmaster? Flannigan McTavish? Finn McTavish? (And the McTavish brothers are immigrants from Ireland.) Brody McTavish? Harper Hamilton? (One of her sisters is Bo and a brother-in-law is Jace.) I don't have a problem with unusual names IF there is a reason for them. These names seemed arbitrary. I had to keep from laughing whenever I came across them.
Names aside, I could easily get hooked on this series and will keep B.J. Daniels in mind, especially when looking for a "vacation" book!
Seriously? I. LOVE. THIS. SERIES. What B.J. Daniels gives us in her Montana Hamiltions Series is sheer genius ! Hard Rain is book four and I have loved every minute of this brilliant, wonderful, tense series.
Harper Hamilton has been away from home, traveling the world and managed to avoid a lot of the family drama that has been going on. But she's home now and smack dab in the middle of it. She seriously needs a break so manages to sneak off and have a wild ride (literally) unfortunately (ok, fortunately) Brody McTavish thinks she's a rider who has lost control of her horse and saves her.. Seriously, A Hamilton needs saving on a horse?? But Brody has always been the boy/man Harper has dreamed of so this is not a bad chance meeting.
Brody McTavish has remained home and begun a life of his own, he's part owner of the family ranch and has big dreams. When he "saves" Harper he sees a chance of getting the girl of his dreams as well. He has always wanted her and now it seems is their time. Of course life is never, ever that simple and a chance discovery of proves that skeletons can be found in places other than closets. Now their chance for love is twisting and turning into family drama.. just what the Hamilitons need.
What B.J. Daniels does better than anyone else is create these complex characters with depth and integrity then tossing them into insanity. Watching them find their way out is always a treat. Brody and Harper are such well written individuals that it is impressive. They are strong willed and have strong family ties. When those ties clash, they have to choose a path and part of that decision is if they are going to travel that path together or separately.
Of course their is so much more going on. Buckmaster Hamiliton has his own issues to decide. Now that he's acknowledged that Sarah is the love of his life, can he take her with him all the way to the White House? Or should he stop the campaign?
And Sarah? I am still in awe as to how this character just keeps evolving. Just what has she been doing for 22 years and when will she remember? But more importantly just who was she to begin with? There are so many intriguing possibilities to her.
Yep, B.J. Daniels remains queen of Western Suspense!

This review is based on the ARC of Hard Rain, provided by netgalley and is scheduled to be released on March 22, 2016
I am having a really hard time rating this one. Parts of the story were really good, parts of the story were OK and parts of the story is a rehash of what was in books 1-3.
The romance of Brody and Harper is OK, but it really is only a subplot to the main arc of the book. Their story received very little page time and it's almost surprising that its the book's description. They have a Hatfield and McCoy or Romeo and Juliet problem as both their families oppose their being together. The story is very much a standard romance trope and didn't hold anything special. I was actually very underwhelmed with their story.
The main story is the mystery of Maggie, Brody's cousin. Did she really have a love affair with Harper's grandfather 35 years ago and who murdered her and buried her on Hamilton land? The book jumps between the past and present. In the past we see the blossoming love between Maggie and JD Hamilton, the impact of this love on his wife and their marriage and we discover the tragic events leading to her death. In the present we have the Sheriff as well as Brody and Harper trying to determine who murdered Maggie. This part of the book is actually pretty good and interesting. There were a few eye rolling events. There were a few times when Brody and Harper find evidence that is just too contrived. A suspect can't find his old yearbook, but Brody and Harper can break into his auto dealership and find it. A photo gets stuck in a drawer but they find it. A few other events felt too contrived as well.
Another subplot that continues in this book is the continuing ARC of what happened to Sarah Hamilton for the last 22 years and who is she really. Nothing really new on this front and a lot of it felt like the same repetition from prior books. In fact the first part of the book felt like it was just rehashing events from prior books. Some sentences even seemed to be duplicated from prior books. This ARC is taking so long to progress that I've almost given up on this series.
First of all, if you are expecting a Carolyn Brown laugh until you cry. Western Romance, park your expectations at the door. This is pure and simple Intrigue with a little romance sprinkled in that takes place in Montana. This is NOT a bad thing! Just know going in that other than riding a horse two or three times, the word ranch throw in occasionally, and maybe 50 pages devoted to romance, you will be on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what's going on and who the murderer is (plus a few finer details that I won't mention as I don't want to spoil anything).
I picked up this book while looking for something to cleanse my palette of YA books I'd been reading recently and unfortunately did not notice that this was book 4 in a 6 book series. This was absolutely no problem as it could stand on its own. However, it hooked me so well that now I must have the rest of the books in the series. I do have book 6 but will just have to contain myself until the earlier books arrive. One of the many advantages to reading a series that is complete is being able to order all the rest of the books used from PaperBackSwap or Amazon and binge read them all.
I loved both of the main characters in the story. Brody has been waiting for years for Harper to grow up enough to pursue and Harper has weighted every guy she has ever met against Brody. So the time is finally here and what happens but they stumble over a body on the ranch while looking for her runaway horse. (see ranch and horse-western). Anyway, this body is part of the ongoing mystery of Harper's missing Mom who has recently returned after 24 years with no memory of what has gone on for the last 2 decades. Combine this with the body they have stumbled over and their decision to investigate since both of their families are involved makes for some tense action in this small Montana town. While the murder is resolved by the end of the book, there are many unanswered questions that make this a series well worth diving into.
B.J. has done it again! Hard Rain kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning sentence to the last paragraph! Even though it's 355 pages, I groaned when it ended! I wanted more! The characters are so intertwined and the suspense has me staying up so late, I don't get any sleep! In this book, we follow the 35 year old murder of Maggie McTavish when her cousin, Brody, and one of the Hamilton girls, Harper, are out riding horses and happen to find the body which has been exposed by a recent rainstorm. This sets off Hamilton family secrets, scandals in the community and even though the murder happened 35 years ago, there are still plenty of people for the sheriff to talk to! Maggie had been rumored to have had an affair with JD Hamilton who was Harper's grandfather - a senator and twice her age, but the Hamilton family refuses to believe this. B.J. did something different in this book which I thoroughly enjoyed. Each chapter she went back and "flashbacked" to parts of the actual meetings between Maggie and JD Hamilton 35 years ago. It gave the story so much more authenticity! I always love how B.J. uses secondary characters in her storylines. This book was no different. Brody and Harper decide to also investigate the murder on their own, which doesn't make the sheriff happy AND it puts them in danger. I cannot WAIT until we find out what actually happened to Harper's mother, Sarah! She has been gone for 22 years but has recently returned, saying she has amnesia! We continue to get more information in this book! I definitely recommend this book!!!
Brody McTavish and Harper Hamilton have been fascinated with each other for years but neither had the nerve to pursue it. Now they’re thrown together by a macabre discovery- a washed up body that unearths an old mystery that could threaten Brody, Harper, their families, and even the whole town. Caught up in a Romeo and Juliet, Hatfields and McCoys kind of dilemma, the two set out to discover the truth of this decades old crime and hopefully salvage their chance for a future. I have to say this is one of the most addicting series I have ever read. BJ Daniels is a master storyteller. Her twists and turns have twists and turns. She has a knack for ending every chapter with just enough to tantalize you to keep reading further. It is impossible to put down. I got nothing else accomplished and chewed every fingernail reading this one. This is #4 in the Montana Hamiltons series. While it could be read as a stand -alone, I recommend starting the series from the beginning because it’s just that amazing. This whole series moves at a relentless pace, and is full of surprises and superbly drawn characters. Read one BJ Daniels book and you’ll be coming back for more.
Hard Rain by B.J. Daniels – This time it is Harper Hamilton and Bodie McTavish who have to work hard for their HEA. As they do we get to know more about the Hamilton family back story. That back story includes scenes from Sarah Hamilton’s past. Sarah is still a mystery. What is her past? Is she good for the Hamilton family or is she a danger? We will have to wait for the next book in the Hamilton Family series to find out. While the book can stand alone it is much better if you have read the previous books in the series.
B. J. Daniels crafts a story better than anyone I know..This book is no let down from the others in the series.Book 4 is just as intriguing and as much of a page turner as all the other books in the story! I love how she weaves us between the past and present throughout the story. A must read that is hard to put down til you have finished the last page. And even the last page makes you wish you had the next one in the series to read!!!!
Omg! B.J. Daniels has done it again with Hard Rain! Brody and Harper become targets of a deranged killer when they try to solve a 35 year old mystery. between family feuds, a big juicy mystery, murder, danger, and true love this book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I can't wait for the next book in the series! I neeeeeed to know what Sarah is hiding!

Sooner or later, every family secret comes to light… When Brody McTavish sees Harper Hamilton's runaway horse galloping across the pastures, he does what any good cowboy would do—gives chase and rescues her. Unfortunately for him, the woman he's secretly loved for years didn't need saving, and she's just reached her limit with people treating her as hopeless. But they soon have bigger problems when they make a gruesome discovery—human remains revealed by a recent rainstorm. Remains that will dredge up old Hamilton family mysteries…and bring about a scandal that could threaten all Harper's loved ones.
With her father running for president, every move Harper makes is under scrutiny. But despite the risks, she's determined to uncover the truth about her family's role in a long-ago murder. If she can trust him enough, Brody will be more than an ally. He could be the only thing standing between Harper and an enemy intent on keeping the past buried forever.
B. J. Daniels' love of the Montana countryside is once more evident in "Hard Rain". As she takes an old cold case from 35 years ago and makes it feel as though it a news snippet from the nightly news. It is not uncommon to hear of bodies washing up following a flood or heavy rain. You will feel your are following a true case with the talent Ms. Daniels puts into the story.
This is the fourth in the series and I would recommend to read the series from the beginning to completely understand where the characters come together and their back histories. Fall in love with the Hamiltons and come back often to visit often.
Ok for this whole review to even make sense, we have to take the way back machine to when doing something bad in your family could actually bar you from becoming President of the United States.
All in all this was a harmless romance with a pretty silly whodunit mystery involved. Basically this dude named Brody falls for a girl who we are told over and over again is his neighbor and much younger than him. Like at least young enough that he remembers when she was a kid and I think he said he was going to college the next year, so significant enough age gap to say ewww. Years pass, Brody sees the girl riding past on her horse, wildly, assumes that she has lost control (despite the fact that he knew she could ride horses fine) and pulls the horse to a stop, they kind of tumble and somehow or other land on a long dead body. Pretty soon there is a lot of suspicion and speculation as to not only who the body belonged to but who killed the woman. We know it's a woman because of some identifying clothing etc.
Turns out that the girls grandfather had an affair with a young woman who was related to Brody and well, she shouldn't date Brody apparently. Also her father is trying to become president but if this little secret gets out there is this whole shit storm that would stop him from becoming president. Therefore she shouldn't date Brody. Also everyone tells Brody not to date the girl because her grandfather was a horrible, horrible person.
Everyone seems to give every reason in the book that she shouldn't date Brody except no one ever mentions the age difference as a problem. Also there was some real random thing about the mother and some cult that was never resolved. But since this was a fourth in the series I suppose I can ignore that.
More troubling to me is that this is the third free nook book in a row with violent rape in it. I mean I know that stuff happens all the time in real life but do we have to read a new fictional account of it every month? But anyway that's not directly related to the story.
In the long run, of course Brody says screw it, dates the girl, evil people are punished and good people are rewarded, yay! But we have to read the next in the series to know about the cult I guess? Or something.
Let me put it this way, if you love stuff like Dynasty and other melodramatic romances with cowboys and murder, this is totally up your alley. My alley is somewhere else.

First off, the mystery far outweighs the romance of this book for me. The way it weaved such a complicated web is what kept me coming back to the book every day. And though I had my guesses throughout the book on who was the killer of Maggie McTavish, I was surprised to find out who it really was in the end. As for the 'forbidden' romance between the two main characters, I didn't care for the way their [near] intimate scenes were written. It was too cliché and a tad unrealistic, like a sappy romance novel that's trying too hard. Though I do understand what the author was trying to accomplish, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. But as the mystery unravels, there are far less of these scenes, which just made the book more interesting for me.
Overall, I'd say the book is very intense and full of suspense, mixed in with all of the drama that comes hand in hand with vindictive, manipulative & jealous wives and girlfriends. Maggie seemed to be hated by these women, just for being who she is — possessing a carefree, wild personality and natural good looks who's in touch with her emotions in a deeply intense way.
It also ends with a cliffhanger, which I guess I should have expected, seeing as this is the 4th book in a series of six. It definitely ends in a way that makes me want to read the entire series, just to find out what Harper's mother's true intentions are, regarding the rest of her family.
I read this book as a standalone and had no trouble following along.
This story introduces us to multiple povs. It is primarily a family saga. But this story is about the investigation. The sheriff in this town was extremely competent and a likable character. My first thoughts about the hero are mixed. I'm not sure I can call him an alpha male because he's not quite that, but he's certainly a man's man and I found myself rolling my eyes at his simple thought process. It's a fair assessment by some reviews that the romance in this story isn't very strong. But only in the sense that it's a B plot and not the main focus. The storyline between our main couple is very much Romeo and Juliet with feuding families trying to warn them away from each other. Personally, the mystery is so good that it overshadows the romance in a way that will ensure that you don't miss it. By chapter 8, I had my guess as to who killed Maggie. I was wrong. The real killer ends up a total surprise. I definitely found all the secrets intriguing. This book is not perfect, but I had fun reading it. Would recommend.
Interested in a more detailed, spoiler review, check out my blog: Book Review: Hard Rain
Hard Rain, why does B.J go with that title? it was because everything just blast off when a heavy rain wash off a grave and expose every piece of dirty secrets of peoples on the town.. This book is just another masterpiece written by this author. It was written cleverly the mystery, crime, romance and thrill in this book is in another level. I remember I even took a piece of paper and do the investigation myself.! I am really overwhelmed with the level of mystery the one which who the heck really killed Maggie. What I also like about this book is the female characters are smart and also the personality of every characters are interesting. I'm little disappointed without knowing who really Sarah is at the end. I was written in the nextbook I think. I can't get enough with B.J Daniels i hope o could read a lot of books from this author.
P.S I recommend it for everyone! I really liked it.

Read this as part of Barnes and Nobles monthly serial read. Man sees woman of apparently run away horse and "saves" her. Turns out she was just riding wild but was in total control. And she turns out to be the youngest daughter of the ranch next door whom he has been in love with since he was a teen. Now that she is home from university.....but the mummified remains of his cousin who disappeared 35 years ago interrupts what could be the beginnings of a beautiful romance and brings out an feud between their families. Our lovers must first solve her murder before they can be together. A pretty good read. This is number 3 in the series and is a stand alone story, not requiring information from the previous books. However, the ending invites one into the next in the series which isn't it until August 2017.
Brody McTavish sees what he thinks is a runaway horse with Harper Hamilton on it. In the process of saving her, her horse runs off and when the catch up they not only find the horse but a dead body. Everyone tries to keep the info quiet because Harpers's dad is running for President and the mystery of Sarah's past is still big news. As Brody and Harper dig into who the dead person is and why they were buried on Hamilton land, someone is trying to keep them from finding the killer. Turns out the dead person is Brody's missing cousin, Maggie and she was involved with Harpers Grandfather. Who killed Maggie and why is the big question, but will Brody and Harper admit to the love they have had for each other Another great read and continuation in the Montana Hamiltons
Book 4 in the Montana Hamilton was another page turner. Each of the Hamilton girls is having an investigation that leads her to he man meant for her. This time Harper joins Brody McTavish in the search for a murderer from before either of them were born. Brody's cousin Maggie disappeared years ago and her body was discovered on Hamilton land. She was rumored to have been the mistress of Harper's grandfather and the two combined forces to discover who really did it. In the background is the continuing story of Sarah and Buck.
If you have read the first 3 books in this series you will love Harper's chance at finding love just like I did! Her world comes crashing out of control when she runs into Brody McTavish when she's out for a ride, from then everything they've known is questioned as they try to figure out who killed Brody's cousin Maggie. Of Course in staying with the first 3 books in the series Hard Rain also continues the story line of Sarah the Hamilton girls birth mother who disappeared and had been gone for 22 years, I can't wait to continue the series with into dust.
