From "A Note from Patrick E. Craig" located before the Table of Contents. He states. "... I'm not exactly known in Amish circles as someone who writes a typical Amish novel. ... [Zane Grey] books had adventure, mystery, and danger, and for those of you expecting a typical light-hearted romance dressed in Amish clothing, you will certainly find far more than that in this story, so be prepared." And this book has adventure, mystery, danger and romance.

The family is St. Clair and there is an inheritance that can *only* be passed if certain criteria are met. And that has been adhered to for literally centuries.

Then there is the meanest, cruelest, heartless @#$%! woman you never want to meet. She's crafty. And almost as smart as she thinks she is. AND she wants that money. Oh boy, does she want that money. The amount would make a millionaire's eyes pop.

So you know this woman is dangerous. But -- she ain't the only one.

So where do the Amish fit in? Well, there's this St. Clair who marries ... you get it! If you are wanting more of the plot from me -- sorry, I don't want to spoil a bit of this great novel. It's a great read.

I do have a bone to pick with Mr. Craig. On page 358, a woman has just, and I mean JUST, given birth. A man gives her a kiss and "she was kissing him back with all the strength and passion and love that was in her." Well, Mr. Craig, since you've never given birth, we readers will forgive you what you don't know. She did kiss him back but her strengh is pretty much been there and used up. Her love has grown volumes; there is something about giving birth that does that. However -- PASSION!!!! Let me tell you. At that moment, there is NO passion. I've even been in the delivery room when the new mom tells us she has a few choice words to tell that man who got her pregnant. No Mr. C -- passion is NOT something she was feeling.

And just a note about the Epilogue. On page 362, "There's a story here about Jonathan's great-great-great-grandmother. She was an Indian princess..." First, THERE ARE NO [American] INDIAN PRINCESSES! But family lore more often than you can imagine has this exact same thing. I'm also a genealogy nut and more than once, someone would come to our genealogy library and declare the family says that g-g-(g)-grandmother was an Indian princess.

Finally, Mr. Craig has a passage on page 214 that beautifully uses a fence as an example regarding our actions staying pleasing to God. Biblical verses are sprinkled here and there but completely in context with the story action.

Enjoy! This is a five-star book and then some.

This book grabs you from page one and holds on! Patrick E. Craig has done a wonderful job writing this story that is like no other Amish Fiction book I’ve ever read! An Amish heiress? Really? While the Amish pass down their farms/businesses and their houses, I’ve never read of any with a monetary fortune to pass down.

Rachel Hershberger is an eighteen year old Amish girl who is unhappy at home and dreams of becoming a veterinarian. Unbeknownst to her, she is the rightful heir to her English grandfather’s fortune. There are stipulations to the inheritance though. She must have the “key” and she must marry a St Clair descendant to keep the fortune in the family.

Once she learns of her inheritance she leaves her Amish home. Her dream has finally come true, she thought anyway! She marries Gerald St Clair. Gerald’s grandmother Augusta was Rachel’s grandfather’s sister-in-law. Augusta is a greedy, evil woman and would stop at nothing to get her hands on the inheritance.

This story has a full range of emotions and you’ll enjoy it very much. You won’t believe the lengths Augusta is willing to go to for money. There’s Daniel King who truly loves Rachel and goes to great lengths to save her from this evil family she’s married into. I don’t want to give too much away so will leave the rest for you to read.

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say I loved it!!

This book is hands down the most unusual Amish fiction book I have read this year. I was completely drawn into this story of an Amish girl who discovers she is the heir to the St. Clair fortune. I won't go into any more details of the book as I don't want to spoil anything but I can guarantee this book is one that once you pick it up you won't want to put it down.

The characters in this book (and there is quite the range of them) are well developed. They range from the simple Amish people of Paradise to the complex English people of Connecticut and the mysterious associates they know. There is a character for everyone in this book.

The storyline of this book was well planned and well written. The story is easy to get into and keeps your attention throughout. There are twists and turns along the way that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The author did a wonderful job of combining the stories of two very different groups of people and making the story seem real. Amish fiction meets primetime drama with a dash of mystery thrown in. This book kept me reading well past my bedtime!

I would definitely recommend this book to fans of Amish fiction who are looking for something a bit different. This was my first book by this author and it definitely won't be the last. This book is well worth your time and money. It is a deliciously fantastic read!

The Amish Heiress by Patrick E. Craig is a good Amish fiction novel. It is the first book in The Paradise Chronicles. Rachel Hershberger is eighteen and has big dreams. She wants to go to Cornell University and become a veterinarian. She knows her father, Jonathan, will never agree to let her go. Ever since he returned four years ago, he has been very strict (he also has emotional issues and still has not regained his complete memories). Daniel King is Rachel’s friend, but he would like more from her. Rachel is not ready to marry nor does she wish to stay in Paradise, Pennsylvania. She has written to Cornell about her situation, and she is hoping to be accepted. Then she just has to find a way to pay for the schooling.

Rachel is a descendant of the St. Clair family. The St. Clair’s are an old family and they have set up a special trust. Augusta St. Clair, who married into the family, thought she would inherit the trust when she made her claim. Turns out that the only person who can inherit is a direct descendant of the first born son. The trustees are trying to find the daughter of Robert St. Clair who would be next in line if she has the mark of the key (a port wine birthmark over her heart). But then Augusta St. Clair is trying to find her as well, but Augusta has no intention of helping her.

Rachel, after a last argument with her father, contacts Augusta St. Clair. Rachel proves she is the St. Clair heir and leaves with Augusta. Rachel then marries Augusta’s grandson, Gerald quickly (she has to marry a St. Clair in order to inherit). Will Rachel come to regret her rash decisions? Augusta has her own agenda and will do whatever it takes to get what she desires. The Amish Heiress will keep you riveted until the very last page.

I give The Amish Heiress 5 out of 5 stars. It is not what I expected (which I liked). The book is well-written. The reader is drawn into the story and kept entranced until the end. There were some interesting twists and turns along the way. This is the first novel I have read by Patrick E. Craig but it will definitely not be my last.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The review and opinions expressed are my own.

"The Amish Heiress" by Patrick E. Craig is the first book in a new series(The Paradise Chronicles) but it picks up where the three novels in the (Apple Creek Dreams Series ) leave off. You don't have to read the (Apple Creek Dreams Series ) to enjoy"The Amish Heiress" but your reading experience will be enhanced if you do!

I am not going to give you a view of the book as you can read the book description, if you want that! I will just tell you what I experienced while reading "The Amish Heiress". I do have to warn you that if you want the typical Amish novel, then Patrick E. Craig books are not for you . But I say be adventuress and jump in, and I bet you won't be sorry you took the leap!

Here is a Facebook post that I posted right after I finished reading "The Amish Heiress". Oh my! I just finished reading "The Amish Heiress" by Patrick E. Craig and I read all but 4 chapters today, I read them last night and yes, I had to finished it that quick, I had to see what happened, and now that I have finished it, I am disappointed, not because the book was bad but the complete opposite, it was fabulous and I want to read more of the character's lives and thoughts and actions. Patrick E Craig writes so well that the reader is pulled into the story and is actually experiencing what the characters are experiencing.

These books are clean romances without cursing and sex scenes and yes there is violence and gun and deceit and alcohol use, and in these books, the Amish characters are not your normal Amish characters, but I believe that is why these books are so fantastic, because after all the Amish are human like us and they experience the same emotions as we do.

There are so many twists and turns in these books, I was like Oh no and then I was like Yes and then I was crying!

I also like the fact that there were Bible Scriptures in these books, ( not the Bible Book Chapter and verse) but the verse itself was printed out.

After reading these books, I have to say Patrick E. Craig is on my list of Favorite Amish genre authors.

I have given "The Amish Heiress" and all the books in (The Apple Creek Dreams series) five stars.

Even though I felt that Patrick E. Craig's first series was a 5* series~I felt that he knocked The Amish Heiress out of the ball park with the emotions that it evoked and the powerful way that he led us on the wayward journey of a young amish girl who defiantly leaves the home and community that has always offered her protection. Inherent dangers that she could not see, danger coming from many sources. Could Rachel protect herself from the plans designed to harm her? What about her relationship with her Heavenly Father whom she had stepped back from. Where was His protection?

I read the story late into each night until I finished. I wanted to help Rachel and found myself trying to get two steps ahead to guess what would happen but found myself lacking. Patrick E. Craig has crafted a wonderful story of drama, redemption, love. He certainly has done his homework with the nuances of the Lancaster County amish and with the community of Paradise, Pennsylvania, where Rachel Hershberger lived with her family. He shows us the best of people, salt of the earth people; he shows us how evil hearts, scheming ruthless people can and will do anything for a price. Anything.

Come along for the journey of a young amish girl who left behind the young man who had loved her since childhood and found herself in situations more dangerous than her naivete could have ever imagined. You won't be sorry. I would have rated this one higher if I could have.

Author Patrick E. Craig has done it again. He has written another awesome book which is the beginning of a new series called The Paradise Chronicles. The Amish Heiress is the first book in this series. It picks up from his first three books of the Apple Creek Dreams series which I do recommend that you all read first to keep up with the characters and the stories before reading The Amish Heiress. It is not your average Amish fiction books like most of them are, It is full of action and suspense. It was impossible for me to put it down because I wanted to know what happens next. The book is about Rachel Hershberger who wanted to be a veterinarian and the only way she could do that is leave the Amish community and go to college. But soon, Rachel finds out she is a heir to the St. Clair fortune on her deceased grandfather's side who is English. For her to get her fortune, she must marry a St. Clair which she does and that is where the trouble begins. But God has other plans for Rachel.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes reading Amish fiction, it's an Amish fiction with a twist. Looking forward to reading more by Author Patrick E. Craig. He does an excellent job writing about the Amish, English, Faith and God.

The Amish Heiress is an outstanding novel of deception, mystery, intrigue, poor choices, faith and a touch of romance. This isn't mainstream Amish fiction. It's so much more! The author's command of descriptive elements is brilliant! A detailed plot is unpredictable and steeped in intrigue and mystery. The author reveals his love of Zane Grey books, and likens his style to his experiences and reactions having read those popular stories.

Continuing with the descendants in Jerusha Springer's family, and building upon their lives, each story in itself is a revelation and cornerstone to the next generation. Rachel's dreams and desires lead her to aspirations that extend beyond the Amish Ordnung, but youth prevails which places her in a very dangerous position. Desire for something more than her Amish lifestyle dictates, Rachel is swept into a world of wealth and corruption.

Be sure to pick up a copy of this book if you love a fast paced, unpredictable novel of epic proportions! You will be in for an edge-of-your-seat experience!

I just finished reading, The Amish Heiress by Patrick E. Craig. It is his first book in a new series called The Paradise Chronicles. I give The Amish Heiress 5 out of 5 stars! I found the book to be SO GOOD that once I started reading it, I just couldn't put it down.

I would love to share a little about the book without revealing too much. The story begins in Paradise, Pennsylvania where the main character, Rachel Hershberger lives. Rachel is an eighteen year old Amish girl who wants to leave the Amish way of life and Paradise. She doesn't get along with her dad. She really wants to continue her education and become a veterinarian. Going to college isn't encouraged in an Amish community. Most Amish girls her age are courting, getting married, and starting their own families. As Rachel searches for answers in her life, her journey is definitely not a "plain and simple" one as you might come to expect in an Amish novel. Her life is filled with decisions that provide a great read!! There are so many twists and turns in this book you really can't predict what will happen next! I guarantee this will be one book you won't be able to put down.

This book was the first book that I have read by Patrick E. Craig, but I can honestly say it won't be my last. I love his style of writing!

Patrick Craig writes a very intriguing book.

Nope, it’s not like many of the Amish fiction novels I have read, although I’ve discovered that many authors write Amish fiction differently than expected – and Patrick is no exception.

I guess you could say his novels are exceptional.

I was quickly drawn into the story… Rachel Hershberger’s life hasn’t been easy – even for a Amish family – but I guess I’m not giving away too much when I say that she expects her life to get much better when she learns that she’s the heir to a fortune!

The characters are well-developed; the plot is unusual (for the Amish) and there are enough twists and turns to keep you glued to the story until the very end.

But that’s all I’m going to say about it… I’m a real stickler for not revealing too much; I’d much rather you read it for yourself.

…and you should. Really.

It’s a great story – oh, how I’d love to say more, but I dare not (do you see how difficult it is to brag on a great story, without revealing any spoilers!)

The Amish Heiress is awesome! It has both history of both families and mystery as well. I give this book 5 stars because the book is a page turner right from the start!
It's a continuous story from the Apple Creek series. I was so happy to learn that the author decided to continue Jenny,Jonathan and Rachel's story.
when the Apple Creek series ended, I have always wondered what happened to the Herbergers. Now we know.
There are two sayings that stick in my mind. Throughout the story when the Herbergers worried about their trials and tribulations, this verse sticks through me"I will never forsake you nor will I leave you." God always hears our prayers even though He may not answer the way we want Him to but prayers are powerful as this author lets us see through the Herbergers.
Another saying is true for English and the Amish saying is " money is the root of all evil."
I'm so happy for a happy ending to the book. I'm hoping there will book two next year!
Y'all just have to read this book! It's definitely exciting! ! You'll definitely want to buy it!

Some of the themes within the book are common to much Amish fiction--a child who strains against the rules of the community and the strictness of Amish parents, education that only goes to 8th grade, etc. This book is a bit different in that the main character (Rachel) has a way out via an English inheritance--though the Englischers plan to take advantage of what they perceive to be Rachel's backward upbringing to control her money. Rachel, however, plans to use the money to study veterinary medicine and isn't so naive as her English relatives think. Unfortunately, the inheritance has already been pilfered, so the plot is a series of crosses and double-crosses as various characters scheme.

When I first started writing Amish fiction, I had a short story
in mind about a master quilter from Apple Creek, Ohio who
found God, a little lost child, and a new life in the heart of a
snowstorm. When I showed the story to my agent, he encouraged me to turn it into a full-length series of three books. Now, three years later, the last of those books, Jenny’s Choice, has been released and I am still telling the story of the Hershbergers and the Springers. The setting has moved from Apple Creek to Paradise, Pennsylvania, but the characters and the stories are part of an ongoing thread that has captured my heart and kept me busy since 2010.
When I was writing the Apple Creek Dreams series, I was
going to tell the stories of Jerusha Springer, her adopted
daughter, Jenny, and then Jenny’s daughter, Rachel. But I fell in
love with the character of Jenny, and then there were two books
about Jenny where I had only planned on one.
Now I finally get to tell Rachel’s story. It’s a different kind of
story, but then I’m not exactly known in Amish circles as
someone who writes a typical Amish novel. I think that’s
because I read too many Zane Grey books when I was a kid. His
books had adventure, mystery, and danger, and for those of you
expecting a typical light-hearted romance dressed in Amish
clothing, you will certainly find far more than that in this story,
so be prepared. But Grey was also one of the best romance
writers that ever put pen to paper, and in the end, good Amish
fiction has to have romance and plenty of it.
So sit back and enjoy The Amish Heiress, and remember, in
the end, stories should be about love: love between people and
ultimately, they should be about the love our God had for us
when He sent His own son to solve the dilemma of the ages and
bring peace and joy to our hearts. And that is the greatest story
ever told.

MY REVIEW
There is a lot going on in this book and oh what a story! Also, you don't usually have this kind of anger within a family or danger when it is an Amish story, so, if you like danger you will love this book. It seems like the danger is lurking in many corners, oh and the double crossing of the characters, then it all comes to a head. Will Rachel survive, will other vital characters survive? I guess you'll have to read the book and find out. This is well worth the money and time to read, grab the book and enjoy!

I would suggest that you read The Apple Creek Dreams series first, the story will make more sense to you. Patrick does some explaining in spots throughout in regards to the first series but I am really glad I read the other series first.

This book is definitely not your typical Amish book, but I did like it. It's jam packed with LOTS of action! The more I read, the better I liked it, and had to keep reading to find out what happened. I couldn't predict the ending, as I tried to several times, and the action would shift in another direction. I really liked the note from the author at the beginning. It set the tone and the background for the story. From that, I know I would like to read the Apple Dream series, which I've bought, but not read. If you like lots of drama and action, this book is for you. Even thought it's almost 400 pages, I read it in 2 days in a couple of reading sessions. I just had to know what was going to happen next. The author also mixed in the love of God and the plan of salvation in this book, which was GREAT! He planned out this book so well. I do plan to reread it soon and dwell more on the plot and characters.

Patrick Craig knows how to grab a reader with the opening page. The Amish Heiress is not your typical Amish romance. This book is filled with suspense, desire, heartache, rejection, romance and ultimately faith in God. Rachel Hershberger's life is being torn apart with her wanting to further her education that is outside of the Amish Ordnung. When Rachel discovers she is the heiress to the St. Clair's fortune what will she do? Craig has written so many twists and turns in this book along with flashbacks to events in The Apple Creek Dream series that connect readers to what has transpired in the lives of these complex characters.

Purchase a copy today and enjoy this incredible read. Readers will not be able to stop reading till the end. I look forward to more incredible books by Patrick Craig.

Deb’s Dozen: Machiavellian Matron vs. Amish Maiden and the Estate of the St. Clairs

One does not normally equate Machiavellian and Amish in the same story, but Patrick E. Craig in the Amish Heiress, the first book in the Paradise Chronicles, does just that. I must admit I’ve grown weary of Amish romances. They’re usually predictable to the nth degree. But then the romance genre insists on formula. Craig doesn’t break the rules, but he sure does stretch them. I was drawn into this story in spite of myself—and ended up loving his treatment of the genre.

Rachel Hershberger lives in Paradise, PA. She’s not happy with her Amish life because her father, lost to the family for many years, makes life difficult for her. Rachel desires most to leave—her home, her upbringing, and her faith. Her best friend, Daniel, tries his best to dissuade her, but she determines to do so anyway.

Fate intervenes. Augusta St. Clair, who must be a distant relative of Machiavelli, has been enjoying the money and prestige of the St. Clair fortune she gained access to through marriage. Pregnant by one St. Clair brother, who spurns her, she turns to the other brother and marries him, convincing him he fathered the baby. Subsequently, he dies, leaving her with her son … and the fortune. To keep the fortune, her grandson, Robert, must marry a woman who has the key, a key-shaped birthmark above her heart that indicates she her St. Clair heritage.

Hence Augusta starts a search for that woman, possibly the child of her son she callously turned away years ago. And likewise, Rachel starts a search for a way to escape, to rid herself of her Amish trappings and get out from under her father’s untenable discipline. You’ll love the story. Craig fits all the pieces together deliciously. Augusta reminds me of misers, rubbing their hands together anticipating more gold. Rachel reminds me of Cinderella, dreaming of a day when she can escape her presumed drudgery. Five stars—and for me to give that score to an Amish romance means the Amish Heiress is extra special.

Patrick E. Craig says he’s a lifelong author and musician. He has been a pastor, worship leader, and seminar speaker. Craig writes both nonfiction and fiction, including middle-grade books and Amish romances. He and his wife, Judy, live in Idaho.

The author gave me a copy of the Amish Heiress, but I was in no way obligated to write a review.

This series, The Paradise Chronicles, works together well with the Apple Creek Series. How the author interweaves the events of past books into this one, makes for a wonderful book. You don't need to read all the other books in sequence, because characters from past books are introduced carefully in this book, letting you know how they played a part previously to find where the characters currently are in their lives. But you won't want to miss the others because they are so good.

Rachel Herschberger is looking for a future that is not what her father wants for her. As she becomes the possible heir of an English ancestor, she finds herself aspiring to do those things her father has so warned her not to pursue. She is a woman who knows what she wants and sets out after it, but is it the right choice for her?

Great book. Read the other books and you will be very immersed in the story that spans several generations and comes together in a well-crafted book.

I received an ebook copy from the author. All thoughts are my own.

Although set at least partially in an Amish community, this is more a romantic suspense than a strictly Amish romance. Rachel Hershberger wants to be a veterinarian, but that requires that she seek more education than graduation after her 8th grade is completed. Nor can she afford such education, which would require that she leave her home in the Amish community of Paradise, PA.

Then she learns that she is an heir to a massive fortune, but only if she marries the grandson of a woman who is evil personified. She dares to take the chance, only to realize she's made a terrible, possibly a fatal, mistake.

When the man she's always loved, Daniel King, works to rescue her, the fact that she's being poisoned with arsenic while pregnant (a bit far-fetched that the unborn baby would survive) makes getting her to a hospital even more critical. Will they make it? Will she? What happens to the man she didn't love, but married anyway? And will the Amish community accept her back after she's been banned?

My first book from this author and I have been well pleased. Racheal and Gearld were not a match made in heaven but the story was brought together with satisfactory results. Daniel as so devoted his character was selfless. I wish more books like this was produced as audiobook.

I enjoyed this book so much. It was full of life lessons. It proved that with faith in God all things are possible. We just need to believe. There are evils in this world, but God always prevails. I recommend this series.

This is an awesome book. Not the usual Amish book at all. Great mystery romance. I couldn’t put it down. It was a wonderful way to end 2020 and start 2021. Well done!

What one does for love is astounding. This book is a depiction of how family can destroy one another or heal one another.

Amish fiction fans who enjoy suspense and intrigue will appreciate Patrick Craig’s latest novel in his Amish romance series. A young naïve heroine seeking freedom and a future abandons her family, her community, her culture—and the boy who loves her. By the time she realizes she’s been duped by greedy, manipulative individuals, she’s too deeply ensnared to escape. Not only is her life in danger, other lives are also threatened. I learned a lot about the Amish lifestyle in Amish Heiress, and I applaud the author’s emphasis on the simple truths of Christianity rather than Ordnung rules and regulations.

Oh My Gosh! Since this was my first read from Patrick E. Craig and I was not familiar with his writing style at first I doubted I would get up to speed with reading this WONDERFUL book. Patrick develops each character and each story line and brings them all together Beautifully!!! The story of Rachael, Jenny, Daniel, Gerald, Jonathon and all of the St. Clair's is a wonderful Amish adventure not to be missed. Even the Connecticut policemen were real to me as I read this book. I do not want to give away any of the story line -- it is a breathtaking Amish Mystery, Romance this is a must read for any Amish fiction fan. Thank you Patrick for allowing me this pleasure.
